Many of us feel helpless especially when worldly environmental disasters occur that are beyond our scope and control. But don’t give up hope. There are some things you can do and every little bit makes a difference in our world. If this latest oil spill has you thinking we need to look for alternatives to oil, get ready to make some changes to do your part to reduce America’s addiction to oil. Whether you go for a big change or keep it simple, every little thing you do sends a message.

1. Grow a Garden. There are several different ways you can grow a garden even if you live in an apartment or have a small backyard. Although it may cost a little to start up, once it gets going the rewards are priceless. Getting your hands dirty in the soil is very therapeutic and growing your own food gives you control of the organic quality. One of the ways you can start a garden is by using those gallon rubbermaid storage containers and filling them with soil Drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage and you have an instant raised bed.

2. Ride your bike. Get a bike and ride as much as possible.

3. Go Local. Support local mom and pop businesses as much as possible. Supporting local businesses helps keep money in your community where it belongs, not shipped overseas. Large big box stores have mucho power and control. Mom and pop shops make our shopping destinations fun and interesting, and without them, weÕd be left with cloned strip malls. Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains.
4. Write a letter to the editor of your newspaper. Usually they have limits on how often you can write a letter. Our local paper is 30 days.

5. Plant something native. Native plants help attract native insects (the good kind!) and will provide the #1 source of protein the birds needs to fly. Native plants will bring beautiful native birds, butterflies, and hummingbirds to your yard. They are also easy to grow because they love where you live and they don’t need extra water and fertilizers. Your exact location is perfect for them!

6. Turn off electricity when not in use. I mean it! Turn off lights, computers and printers at night, and be vigil about it. I can’t stand it if I see a light on somewhere in the house, it must be turned off! The U.S. Department of Energy urges complete shutdown at night of computers.

7. Look into alternative vehicles. Electric cars are expensive but you can find ones that have been transitioned to an electric version on ebay. You can also purchase moderately priced hydrid vehicles.

8. Don’t water during the middle of the day. Watering during the day will cause water to evaporate and therefore take way more water to get the job done. Water ONLY in the morning or later in the evening.

9. Reduce your plastic consumption. Use reusable bags when shopping – even at places other than grocery stores. I rarely if ever buy any plastic children’s toys, even for birthday’s. I find that when I avoid plastic, I find much better items that are longer-lasting and higher quality, and not normally more expensive. It’s more expensive for me to buy a plastic piece of junk that will only last a short time, then sit in the landfill forever.

10. Plant a Tree for energy conservation. Deciduous trees will shade the west, south and east sides of the home in summer, and evergreen trees along the west and north edges of the lot will provide winter windbreaks.

11. Stop Using Plastic. Plastic is a petroleum by-product. Instead of buying plastic bags in your kitchen use those paper bags that you get from the grocery store in your trash can. Majestic Aromas Organics products are currently 95% plastic-free, working towards 100%. Don’t buy plastic kid toys. Wooden, natural toys look prettier in your house and are better made.

12. Air dry your clothes. I love to hang my sheets and comforter especially on the line to dry for that true fresh feel.

13. Turn back the thermostat. Turning it back by at least 2 degrees will help save on your gas bill. In the winter you could wear more layers inside to help stay warm, and in the summer you can use fans.

14. Carpool or Take Public Transportation.

15. Switch to a push mower that is powered only by you.

Products made with Oil you probably didn’t know:
Crayons (use beeswax instead of regular crayons)
Perfumes (made with petrochemicals)
Lipsticks (except natural ones) are made with petroleum oil.

Of primary importance to the M.O.E.R (Making Our Environment Right) ., is ensuring that we, as a global community, can learn to live with, by and for each other. The mission of the M.O.E.R (Making Our Environment Right) is to identify and create economic opportunities, education and social support to individuals and families.

Our objective is to address this pandemic in a constructive and life enhancing way. We will seek alternative approaches to enable young people to make positive life choices. The principal motivation of the M.O.E.R (Making Our Environment Right) ., is to ensure that our global community’s safety and security are a result of respect, cooperation, and an enhanced acceptance that we are one Family.

The credo of the M.O.E.R (Making Our Environment Right) is “Making good communities better” while our focus is Making Our Environment Right. Our objective and challenge with wide broad spectrum of inter-related program initiatives. The challenge requires that we attempt to provide a vehicle with which to deliver essentials services to those areas that will augment the basic quality of life thereby preparing the foundation for the re-development of the individual(s). Further, the M.O.E.R (Making Our Environment Right) seeks to define the problem of community (i.e. youth and families) development in the social/philosophical abstract, in this instance – longevity.

We are determined to assist in the well-being and long life of the affected communities through programmatic efforts that encourage as well as promote a robust and meaningful existence.
An ingredient of a formula that may result in a robust and meaningful life over an extended period is nourishment, clothing, and shelter including the basics of education. These essential ingredients are basic elements of safety necessary for the growth and community security. In consideration of the challenges in “making good communities better”, we limit our focus to the ‘software’ of youth re-development i.e. food, clothing, Historical preservation and education.

The M.O.E.R (Making Our Environment Right) with affiliates in several states in the U.S., has developed a series of program ‘delivery systems’ which are a product of research and networks amongst some of America’s corporate ‘ social advocates’. Those of the business environment that is willing to share their resources and methods in such a ways as to allow us to give to those in need.
