Kuala Lumpur: CIMB-Principal Asset Management Berhad (“CIMB-Principal”) today launched the CIMB Islamic Global Commodities Equity Fund (“the Fund”), a Shariah-compliant fund that provides investors broad investment opportunities in global commodities.

Speaking at the press conference today, J. Campbell Tupling, Chief Executive Officer of CIMB-Principal, said: “The Fund will provide exposure to stocks that will benefit from the strong and rising demand for natural resources and basic materials namely energy, metals, agriculture and renewable energy. The demand for these global commodities is driven by the current “supercycle”, an observable and prolonged trend which has a significant impact on businesses and the economy.”

Tupling continued that current trends include population growth, industrialisation, urbanisation and clean energy, which are triggering a ripple effect on the commodities sector. By 2050, the world’s population is expected to rise from 6.5 billion to 9.1 billion and the E7 emerging economies (the BRIC economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China, plus Indonesia, Mexico and Turkey) are expected to become approximately 50% larger than the current G7 economies (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and US). The urban population in the East Asia/Pacific are also likely to increase by 1.1 billion in the next 20 years.1

“As populations increase and lifestyles change, there is a permanent shift in demand for more food, efficient energy resources and better infrastructure. Therefore, supply needs to find ways to keep up. Consequently, it will also drive the adoption of alternative energy sources to mitigate increasing pollution,” explained Tupling.

Meanwhile, Tan Beng Wah, Chief Executive Officer of CIMB Wealth Advisors Berhad (CWA) said: “The nature of the Fund makes it simpler for investors to diversify their portfolio further as it invests in companies along the entire commodity value chain, ranging from companies that are involved in project financing to production and maintenance.”

The Fund, which will be primarily distributed by CWA (formerly known as CIMB Wealth Advisors), appeals to all investors, especially those who wish to observe Shariah guidelines in their investments. Tupling added that investors can do so with confidence as a Shariah-compliant fund shows no significant difference in performance as compared to a conventional fund over the long-term.

The Fund offers potential capital growth over the medium to long term, investing at least 70% of its net asset value (NAV) in Shariah-compliant equities and Shariah-compliant equity related securities of companies that are primarily engaged in activities related to commodities. However, it may also invest in Shariah-compliant derivatives such as commodity exchange-traded funds and commodity indexes if it presents a more compelling alternative to equities, but subject to a maximum of 28% of the Fund’s NAV.

The CIMB Islamic Global Commodites Equity Fund has an approved fund size of 600 million units, with an initial offer price of RM0.2500 per unit. It is also distributed by CIMB Bank, CIMB Private Banking and CIMB Investment Bank with a minimum initial investment of RM1,000.

1) Investment Strategy, policy and holdings.

Every fund has its own investment profile. Investors should have a clear understanding of the investment strategy taken in each fund that they are considering to ensure it is consistent with their personal investment objective and risk tolerence level. Even the funds within the same category may have significat difference in the investment holdings. For example, the risk exposure in large-cap growth companies is definitely much lower than for penny stock funds.

2) Past performance.

Investors may look into the past performance trend of the fund to gauge its future performance. Do bear in mind that the past performance may not repeated in the future and we should no be overly excited to see one year of good result if the fund is only newly established. A good fund should be the one that has been consistently out-performing it peers, be it during good and bad times.

3) Cost.

Investors must aware that when they buy or sell the funds, there are fees and expenses embedded in every transaction. For example, the expense ratio of a small funds tend to be higher than a large fund while a regional or global fund usually will carry higher cost compared with domestic fund.

4) Fund Management

The Fund management is very important to ensure continuity and consistent performance. If a fund changes management too frequently, it very difficult for us to gauge the performance of the fund as different managers will have different styles wich may effect the performance of the fund.

Example : If the manager tend to have higher portfolio turnover, then the expense rati of the fund may increase even tough the nature of the fund holdings remains the same.

Hopefully by having better understanding of the above, you may able to make meaningfull comparison among unit trust fund that you interested and identified ones that suit you most

Happy Investing

1) Income Funds - usually are characterised as providing consistent income to investors. These Funds invests in income-producing stocks or bonds or combination of both. Bond funds, equity funds and money market funds are included into this category.

2) Growth funds - generally are more aggresive than income funds but have the possibility or earning higher returns by focusing on the objective of long-term capital appreciation rather than income producing or short - term gain. Example small caps funds, commodity funds, index funds and gold funds.

Before you start evaluate these type of funds there are 2 things you must considered :

your investment goal or objective.

risk level that you afford to take.

Certain investors invest for his own purpose, some invest for retirement and if you are already close to it than u should look at income funds that are more predictable. However if you are still younger (like me ) and you maybe married and want to save for your children which will be 10 or 15 more years you may look for growth funds that generate higher return but with higher level of risk.

Once you are clear on what you are looking than you can narrow down your selection to either income or growth category and you can move the next step of identifiying the most suitable funds within selected category.

Happy investings

Kuala Lumpur: CIMB-Principal Asset Management Berhad has obtained approval to increase the size of the CIMB Islamic Money Market Fund to 225 million units from 150 million units. This is the second increase for the fund following its last increase on 12 August 2008. The Shariah-compliant Fund attracted a broad base of investors as it aims to provide monthly distribution to investors. The fund is a convenient parking facility where investors can temporarily place their cash whilst re-assessing their investment strategy and deciding when they would like to actively return to the market.

Chief Executive Officer, J. Campbell Tupling stated: “Since its launch in March 2008, the Fund has been popular with investors. As a tax-friendly alternative to traditional bank deposits, the Fund seeks to provide investors with potentially higher returns without compromising accessibility to their cash, allowing investors to withdraw anytime without penalty.”

The CIMB Islamic Money Market Fund aims to provide investors with liquidity and regular income while maintaining capital stability by investing primarily in money market instruments that conform with Shariah principles. The Fund is distributed by CIMB Wealth Advisors, CIMB Private Banking, CIMB Bank and Standard Chartered Bank.

Kuala Lumpur: CIMB-Principal Asset Management Berhad (“CIMB-Principal”) today launched the CIMB-Principal China Recovery Structured Fund - that takes advantage of China’s road to economic recovery. The Fund aims to provide investors with regular income over the tenure of the Fund and may potentially provide higher returns than the current Fixed Deposit rate.

J. Campbell Tupling, Chief Executive Officer of CIMB-Principal, stated: “Sentiments in China are slowly improving with its USD585 billion stimulus plan. Positive developments are visible in major sectors encompassing infrastructure, housing, innovation, health and education that will enable China to charter a high growth potential. Investors will then have the opportunity to capture the market exposure through this Fund. The Fund will receive potential annual dividend payments linked to the performance of China equities as represented by the Dynamic China Index. We will be able to select and lock-in the investments at the lowest investment entry point to enhance potential gains after a 6-month observation. The Fund’s structure and low investment cost will appeal to investors looking for a regular income stream and prefer not to take much risks given the current global economic outlook.”

The 5-year close-ended Fund will invest at least 95% of the Fund’s Net Asset Value (NAV) into China Recovery Structured Product, while up to 5% of the remaining Fund’s NAV will be invested in liquid assets for liquidity purposes.

Tupling explained that the Fund rides on China’s economic recovery and comes with three key features. Firstly, the Fund offers capital protection if held to maturity. Secondly, it reduces investors’ dilemma of when to enter the market, where the Fund will automatically select the lowest monthly entry level based on the lowest entry point observed in the initial 6 months. Lastly, the Fund gives investors the option to lock-in and cash out annual profit to eliminate point risk at maturity.

“Investors can expect a better outlook for China this year as the consensus view is that China will be one of the first economies to recover. The CIMB-Principal China Recovery Structured Fund is open for investment for 45 days and closes on 3 June 2009,” Tupling added.

The CIMB-Principal China Recovery Structured Fund has an approved fund size of 300 million units, and an initial offer price of RM0.50 per unit. It is distributed by CIMB Bank, CIMB Private Banking, CIMB Investment Bank, and CIMB Wealth Advisors.

Kuala Lumpur: CIMB-Principal Asset Management Berhad (“CIMB-Principal”) recently won the Best Malaysian Equity Fund award by Failaka Advisors. The 4th Annual Failaka Islamic Fund Awards recognised the CIMB Islamic DALI Equity Growth Fund for the Best Malaysian Equity Fund (Three-Year) category based on its performance as at 31 December 2008.

Failaka Advisors is the recognised leader in Islamic fund research, offering institutions and private investors access to a wealth of information on Shariah-compliant investment funds. Established in 1996, Failaka was the first company to monitor the performance of Shariah-compliant funds worldwide. It has then expanded its products and services to include advisory services and an online database and guide for Shariah scholars.

J. Campbell Tupling, CEO of CIMB-Principal said: “It is a great honour for CIMB-Principal to receive this award. The Fund has outperformed its index over a 3-year period by 25.91%. The award goes to show that our fund has performed commendably with good capital preservation over the long term.”

To date, the Fund has proven to be suitable for investors with a medium to long term investment horizon and for those who want to invest in a diversified portfolio that adheres to the Islamic principles. Currently, the Fund is conservatively positioned with an equity allocation of 70%. In addition, the Fund has a bar-bell structure with a layer of defensives stocks which together make up 10% of the portfolio. At the same time, the Fund is also keyed into the current market themes, which is currently overweight in the Construction sector in anticipation of more pump-priming projects.

“We have proven ourselves worthy and trust that investors will continue to stay invested with us despite the challenging economic environment.” Tupling concluded

Caranya bukanlah cara cepat kaya… tetapi, cara pasti kaya. Hendak tahu apakah caranya?

Tetapi, let’s face it… RM14,600 dari simpanan selama 40 tahun bukanlah jumlah yang
besar.

hanya RM14,600, kini menjadi RM352,943.18 selepas 40 tahun.

RM352,943.18 ???

mudah. Katanya, compund interest adalah “the greatest invention of all time”.

(Why not choose CIMB WA )

Sebelum umur mereka mencecah 45 tahun, kekayaan mereka berjumlah RM2,473,138.41 .

Sekiranya anda berlengah memulakan simpanan anda, efek compound interest diperlambatkan.

Perhatikan senario ini. Zahid menyimpan RM200 setiap bulan sejak mula bekerja pada umur 20 tahun.

Asri pula lambat mengambil tindakan.

Mari kita lihat apabila mereka berdua menjangkau umur 38 tahun…

Buat pesanan akhir, tanya diri sendiri.

Salam cemerlang!

by Joyce Goh, The Edge

KUALA LUMPUR: In the midst of a challenging environment, the World Bank remains positive on the outlook of growth for Malaysia.

“We remain very optimistic in general for East Asia and Malaysia specifically. We see a government that is working hard on the issues that it’s being confronted with. We believe the growth can be sustained,” said World Bank vice-president of East Asia and Pacific Region, James Adams.

“It is not just with Malaysia but more generally, the price changes for last year have presented strong economic challenges to governments. All governments are struggling with those issues and we are pretty confident the governments will come to grips with that,” he added.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on East Asia, Adams said the recent changes the Malaysian government had put into place showed that it was committed to coming to grips with the problems it was facing.

“I think the Malaysian government has been an interesting government in terms of macro policy. By international standards it has done a consistently good job. It’s easy to go through a prescription of what the books tell you to do.

“What is hard is for governments reflecting on their particular circumstances to decide how they can implement it effectively, given the political and economic concerns. On those measures, I think Malaysia has done a good job and so we are pretty confident that that record is going to continue,” said Adams.

He said the concern on inflation today was what complicates decisions on policies.

“It makes it hard. When you have price stability, you have more flexibility. I think what we are seeing is, there is no lack of attention on this issue. Everybody sees inflation as a key constraint. The challenge is what policy prescription in a country’s specific situation is best to deal with that,” he pointed out.

“If you are an oil exporter, you are benefiting right now in terms on oil price but you still have to manage the inflation. Every country has to look at its particular circumstances and make decisions on that,” he added.

Nevertheless, Adams reckoned the speed of adjustment to changes in the economic environment had improved. “The speed of adjustment relative to historical times has increased. We know a lot more of what’s going on in the economy and how that can be effectively addressed and that’s the encouraging message that one sees,” he said.

“We see a pragmatic adjustment to the new realities. The speed of adjustment has been aggravated in terms of the special problems the US has been confronted such as the financial and the subprime crises. But we see that evolution is continuing.

“We are quite optimistic that the overall growth rates are going to be sustained. It’s not clear where the US is but it appears to be growing marginally. Most people are predicting 1% growth. I think it’s everybody’s interest that the growth rate increase but that will happen after the financial problems of the subprime crisis are over,” he added.

However, with the slowdown in the US thereby causing a decline in export demand from there, Adams said the decrease in export demand from the US had been offset by the growth in the European nations.

“We continue to see a very strong dynamic East Asia. We do see some shifting going on in terms of the sources of markets. Growth rate in US slowing and the input growth rate is slowing. But the better growth rates of Europe some what compensated for that,” he pointed out.

KUALA LUMPUR 15 Okt.
