So, we're still here and I'm writing a blog entry so you could be forgiven for thinking I have something particular to say. Not really! Other than the insulation has gone down and seems to be working a treat. The cold chill that used to drift down over your shoulders in the evening whilst sitting on the sofa is no more, and the interior temperature seems to stay higher for longer. So its all good so far.
We'll give it a couple of days and check on the condensation levels, but I'm pretty positive about it all.

The family have all headed back to the UK so its just me and Jason and the peace and quiet left here. Nice :-) I've pretty much finished clearing up the carnage left behind in their wake, and also been printing off lots of recipes for Christmas food, I really enjoy cooking (especially if its something packed full of sugar!) and am looking forward to taking over the kitchen for the next few days.

I've had a few more requests for letters from Father Christmas in the last week or so - last posting dates to everywhere have passed but I still create them up to the end of the week and send them as PDF files for priting at the other end. Gets people out of sticky situations with the kiddies for £2.95 a go, which cant be bad! I'll need to knock up a few more templates for next year though as this years repeat customers are running out of options...

Then of course theres the new website I need to set up for the new and exciting business venture for when we get back - but I think that one will keep me occupied for some time yet before it kicks off.

So thats about all for now. Nice and quiet and just me and Jason for a week or so, with lots of food and drink and log fires. Aaahhhh! :-) Merry Christmas to everyone, and see you over on the main website!Jasons also persuaded me to go back to the website rather than rely too much on the blog. As much as I like the ease of the blog, I have to admit that the website is more visually engaging (when theres photos to look at, at least!). So once we head off after Christmas I'll import this lot onto the site and go back to doing things the old way. Still, it was nice to have the change, and all adds to the education!

Sitting tight for Christmas

Apologies to the regular readers for the lack of posts over the last couple of weeks, but to be honest there's been very little to report. The final missing Eberspacher parts have all now arrived, and despite no changes being made to the system since the last post, she's not displayed any error codes for a couple of weeks now. So we still have a spare controller unit to change as/when/if required. However, the last of the parts only arrived yesterday, so realistically it'd be a bit of a bonkers rush to get the last ferry before Christmas - plus having just looked on the ferry website there's no space for Moglet anyway, so that's that decision taken care of!So we're going to sit tight here and look after the house while mum and dad are in the UK. We've stocked up on the booze, Jasons chopped a pile of logs for the fire, we've got in a big tin of Roses to plough through and I have a splurge of a roast dinner planned for Christmas Day. Things could be a lot worse :-)
Ferries start up first thing in the new year and mum and dad are back here on the 30th, so the plan at the moment (!) is to leave pretty much as soon as they get back here.

In the meantime there's a few little odd jobs around Moglet at the need to be done, but nothing major, we're pretty much ready to go. The temperatures have been getting down to around -5C overnight which is causing condensation build up under the bed, so we bought some insulation sheets a few days ago, and Jasons going to fit those to the floor of the luton section, which should improve things no end. We also found that in hotter conditions the cab heats up like a greenhouse, even with window blinds in place, and the heat radiates up into the camper section all through the evening, so hopefully the insulation will reduce that effect too.

We also have a bit of a last minute guest situation here - my sister decided to take advantage of a cheap Ryanair deal a week or so ago and book seats for her and her 6 year old twin boys to pop over for a week, and they arrived yesterday afternoon. So things are a little noisier than usual! Currently they're playing with two little motorised trucks, building obstacle courses from logs and bits and pieces, seeing what terrain they can get them to go across - sound like budding overlanders to me!

Ups and Downs

Jason spent much of last week playing with the Eberspacher some more, taking apart the fuel lines after reading about the importance of tidy butt joints! Nothing to do with builders bums, it seems like if the pipes aren't neatly spliced next to each other, a small amount of air could be introduced into the supply and therefore the burner, which could cause it to run choppily, or not at all, as its either slightly choked or completely strangulated through lack of diesel.
The fuel line after the diesel pump only has an internal diameter of around 2mm, so the flow of fuel is reasonably small, which means even a teeny little amount of air has a surprisingly large impact on the percentage of fuel making it to the burner, and therefore on the efficiency of the whole unit.

With multiple pipes joined in various places, getting everything off, edges re cut neatly and then jubileed up nice and tight took the best part of a day. But at the end of the day we were once again placed in the happy/scared place of hearing Moglets heater running smoothly. Do we jump for joy, ecstatic at the notion that finally things have been fixed? Or do we shuffle about nervously, waiting and waiting for that moment when for no apparent reason she cuts out again? If I'm honest, there was lots of the latter going on and not much of the former...

But two days later, after about ten stops and starts after leaving her to go cold overnight, she still fires up on command and stays burning nice and smooth until she's turned off. Hurrah!!

We heard back from Graham - seems like the 'military spec' unit is something he'd be able to get his hands on, but may take a little while. So Jasons decided to go down the additional spares route. The reality is the unit we already have has been almost totally refurbished over the last month or so anyway, so replacing it seems a little daft. It's a bit of a simplification, but if you think of the Eberspacher as having 10 moving/replaceable parts, we've already replaced parts 1-7, so Jason ordered numbers 8, 9 and 10 on Thursday last week. Graham wasn't certain what he had on the shelves and what might have to come from Germany so we're still a little hazy on delivery timeframes, but once the missing bits arrive we should be good to go.

In the meantime we've been treated to a bit of a snowfall here at mum and dads and have been helping mum get their house ready for a viewing later on this week. We had a chat and kind of decided that, nice and comfortable and familiar as it would be to curl up in front of the fire at mum and dads for Christmas, there really isn't any reason to hang about once the parts arrive. We'll be booking that ferry (again!) and be off!

Just been out to Moglet - the heater is showing error codes again :-( Arse. Do you think she was listening to our late night chat and decided she liked the sound of a log fire in France for Christmas??

So I've been having a think. Not something I try and do too often, especially before breakfast, but sometimes it can't be avoided. We were hoping to get some numbers from Graham the Eberspacher man before close of business yesterday telling us how much a brand new unit would be (one that's a more 'modern' version of what we already have, with the water and fuel pumps incorporated), and also how much a replacement for what we currently have would be.
The former is apparently classified as military spec, whatever that means - so we've been told to expect it to be more pricey for that reason if nothing else. Replacing the unit we have with a duplicate seems in some ways a little odd as we've already pretty much rebuilt it, and theres no guarantee that whatever the problem is, its within the unit itself.

Either way, Graham didn't hear back from his supplier before hometime yesterday and as at lunchtime today, we still haven't heard. Whatever the costs are and whatever unit we eventually decide on, either way its got to come from Germany (its that pesky 24v thing again). Today is Wednesday 24th November. That means that even if we hear from Graham today and make a decision today and the people in Germany put it in the post today, its not going to arrive with us this week. Based on the last Eberspacher package we received from Germany, around 10 days delivery time is closer to what we should expect.

So that takes us on to around 3rd December before we have a replacement part on the doorstep. Jason then has to either do a straight swap of the unit we already have for the replacement identical version, or he has to find a new home for a new unit, re-plumbing and re-wiring it into wherever it gets bolted. The former will take a couple of hours and the latter could easily take a couple of days. Then assuming everything is ok, we'll be free to leave here by maybe the 6th December. Of course, if anything goes wrong, we will be here longer than that... Add to that the fact the last ferry this side of Christmas we can get on departs Barcelona on 19th December and ideally we'd like 5 days to travel there, that means the latest we can realistically leave here and arrive before Christmas is 14th December. That's only three weeks away and we've already been faffing with the Eberspacher for five weeks :-( Maybe we really will be here for Christmas - if that happens, we're going to get in a couple of bags of logs, an obscene amount of chocolate and eat and drink ourselves silly for a few days, gorging on loads and loads of DVDs too! Mum and dad are back to the UK on the 23rd December so we'll have the house to ourselves, which will be a little odd as there aren't going to be any decorations up. Although I do have a 1ft 6" tree for Moglet we could always put up in the corner!

Keeping chins up though, fingers crossed it'll all be fine and we'll be well into Morocco long before anything like Christmas arrives.

Oh No It Doesnt...

The Eberspacher is still broken :-( It ran for hours and hours after Jason reinstalled it at the weekend, then when it clicked on the next morning if turned off again after 15minutes. Ever since then its been a daily event to take off something and replace it with a new bit to see if it works, and nothing does. Right up to about an hour ago we though we'd cracked it, having fiddled with the fuel feed and then listening to everything running smoothly for half an hour. Then she cuts out and tells us via an error code that the fan is jammed - exactly the same damn error code that we got over a month ago when this whole saga started. And since then she's had a new fan, a new motor, a new flame sensor, a new inlet pipe, a new exhaust... The only options left now are to try replacing the electrical bits, the brain of the unit, or replace the whole unit entirely. We're already down hundreds of pounds and still apparently no closer to a fix, and more spare parts will probably be another couple of hundred. A brand new unit is closer to a grand, but that also buys us peace of mind and confidence in a part of Moglet that we'd really like to have faith in. Thats assuming theres a unit of the model we need thats available...

Oh, and did I mention that the 12v circuit in the cab decided to go pop for no apparent reason over the weekend too? The fuse has been replaced and its all up and running again, but we're still none the wiser as to why a 5amp fuse would blow on a circuit that has less than 3amps running through it fully loaded, even allowing for startup spikes?? I wouldnt mind, but we havent even used anything on the circuit since it was installed and tested, let alone had the chance to overload it!

Feels like we'll still be here for Christmas at this rate :-( Going to go and find some comfort food in the kitchen and see if I can shake off this Eeyore feeling.
