Karmayodha (Malayalam: കര്മയോദ്ധ) is a 2012 Malayalam action thriller film co-produced, written and directed by Major Ravi. It features Mohanlal, Murali Sharma, Saikumar, Mukesh, Bineesh Kodiyeri, Rajeev Pillai, Asha Sharath and Aishwarya Devan. The soundtrack was composed by M. G. Sreekumar with lyrics by Dr. Madhu Vasudevan; the background score was provided by Jeffrey Jonathan. Popular dancer and Television actress Asha Sharath is featured as the wife of the character played by Mohanlal in this movie.

Plot

Madhavan Menon ("Mad Maddy") is a ruthless investigating officer working with the Mumbai Police. He is an encounter specialist who makes decisions on the spot, without always waiting for orders from the top. His latest assignment is to investigate the missing of a teenage school girl from Mumbai. He reaches Kerala on being tipped off that the girl could be taken to Kerala. In the meantime, another girl gets kidnapped in Kerala, presumably by the same people or people linked to them. There is also information that some other girls too have been kidnapped. Following the leads, Maddy comes to the conclusion that all the girls have been abducted by a Kerala-based sex trafficking racket headed by a psychic criminal named Khais Khanna. Maddy embarks on a mission to eliminate the racket and save the girls.

The film depicts children being trapped by mafia groups taking advantage of technology like mobile phones, and dwells on the international sex trafficking. The film also depicts the diminishing joint family system in society, suggesting that with the increasing trend towards the nuclear family in society, what is getting uprooted is the bonding between family members and the security that they offer along with love and affection to the future generation.

Production

The film was shot on locations in Mumbai, Cochin, Munnar and Nagercoil. Filming began in August 2012.

The pooja ceremony of the film was held on 7 July 2012 at the BTH Sarovaram Hotel in Cochin, India.^[1]

Notably, Karmayodha is not set in the military backdrop that had characterised all other Mohanlal–Major Ravi films, such as Keerthi Chakra, Kurukshetra and Kandahar.

Marketing

The first-look poster was released in September 2012; the film's first teaser was released on October 3, 2012 and theatrical trailer was released on November 25, 2012.

The soundtrack was composed by M. G. Sreekumar, with lyrics by Dr. Madhu Vasudevan. The album was launched on November 25, 2012 at IMA Hall in Kochi. The event was attended by Mohanlal, Joshiy, Major Ravi, Mukesh, Rajeev Pillai, MG Sreekumar, Pradeep Nair, Pranav Mohanlal, Renji Panicker, Jeffrey Jonathan and other personalities from the film industry, along with the technical crew and cast of the film. The background score for the film was provided by Jeffrey Jonathan. The film notably features Murukan Kattakada's famous poem "Kannada" which has been rendered by the poet himself.

Release

The distribution rights for Karmayodha in Kerala were bought by Red Rose Release. Karmayodha's premier show was held on December 20, 2012 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.^{[citation needed]} The film's worldwide release took place on December 21, 2012.Karmayodha will release in Europe and UAE in December 27,2012.

A few days prior to release, Kerala State Health Department filed a case against Mohanlal for appearing in posters holding a cigar. A summons was issued to Mohanlal by the Judicial First Class Magistrate to appear in person on March 18, 2013. Summons were issued to the film's director Major Ravi, production company Manager and Managers of the three theaters where the film is being screened

Plot of 'Christian Brothers'

'Christian brothers' is the story of Captain Varghese Mappila(Saikumar) and his family. Captain Varghese Mappila is a retired Army Officer. He has four children-Christy(Mohanlal), Joby(Dileep), Stella(Kaniha) and Jessy(Lakshmi Gopalaswami). The brother jody of Mohanlal and Dileep was much appreciated in Joshy's previous multistar film 'Twenty-twenty'. The two brothers, Christy and Joby, were the dream of Varghese Mappilla. But on the contrary, dealing with underworld and crimes,Christy becomes a highly paid informer in the Mumbai region,. Joby is sent to abroad to study Theolohy. But, he also follws the same path as his brother.

Joseph Vadakkan(Suresh Gopi) is a Police Officer, who has some issues with the Christian brothers. Andrews Bandra (Sarath Kumar) is also an informer like Christy.But they are not in one ship. Kavya Madhavan comes as opposite to Dileep and Lakshmi Rai is the heroine casted against Mohanlal. The film also has the presence of Jagathy Sreekumar and Suraj Venjaramood. The makers behind the film adopted a new strategy in 'Christian brothers'. Initially, the whole film will revolve around the main heroes individually. He is the man who has given us immense pleasure in films like Nadodikkattu, Kireedam, His Highness Abdullah, Bharatham, Kilukkam, Manichitrathazhu, Narasimham -- the list just goes on.
He is also no stranger to awards, at the state or the national level. Winner of countless state awards for Best Actor, three-time National Award winner, as well as a Padma Shri awardee, Mohanlal accepts it all with humility.
The year 2003 is a landmark for the Malayalam superstar as he completes 25 years in the film industry on September 4.
He began his film career with some friends. Those very friends are now getting ready to host a special tribute to the star on his silver jubilee in films, in Thiruvananthapuram.

Mohanlal lives with his family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He married Suchitra, daughter of Tamil film producer K. Balaji^[96] on 28 April 1988.^[9] Mohanlal later recalled in an interview that Suchitra used to send him cards because she wanted to marry him. Their horoscopes did not match at first, but later it was found that the astrologer erred. Mohanlal has two children - Pranav and Vismaya. Pranav has acted in a few movies, debuting in Mohanlal's film Onnaman.^[97] Mohanlal did not object when his son expressed a desire to act as "Kids may have many such ambitions. If we can help them realise something, what is the problem?" ^[97]
Mohanlal is a self-described foodie.^[10]^[98] He also enjoys melodious music. Mohanlal is a strong believer in destiny and spirituality. He likes to read Osho, J. Krishnamoorthy, Aurobindo and Ramana Maharshi.^[15] In 2008, Mohanlal underwent 18 months of magician training under Gopinath Muthukad. He had planned to perform a stunt called Burning Illusion in Thiruvananthapuram, however this was cancelled later on allegations that it is a dangerous act.^[99]
In 2008, while shooting for the movie Kurukshetra in which he plays the role of an Army officer, Mohanlal expressed interest to join Territorial Army of India as an officer.^[100] On July 9, 2008, he was formally inducted to the Territorial Army in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by Army Chief Deepak Kapoor. Rules had to be amended to accommodate him as men above the age of 42 are not eligible to join the volunteer force.^[101]^[102]
Mohanlal was awarded an honorary doctorate by Kalady Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in 2010. The citation praised Mohanlal as "an excellent performer after actor Sathyan in Malayalam film world, who essayed a rich variety of roles with equal ease and poise." ^[103]

Film career - Later years (1996-present)

Many movies made in this period built on Mohanlal's image as an invincible, larger-than-life hero. Priyadarshan's Kala Pani, an epic film about the prisoners in Cellular Jail of Port Blair and Lohithadas's Kanmadam (1998) are among the notable commercial successes in the second half of the decade.Mohanlal's first non-Malayalam movie was the Tamil film biopic Iruvar directed by Mani Ratnam in which he starred opposite debutant Aishwarya Rai.^[27] The controversial film,^[28]^[29] in which Mohanlal depicted an actor who turns politician (based on M G Ramachandran), was a critical success and won many awards including Best Film award at the Belgrade International Film Festival and two National Film Awards.^[30]
In 1998, he produced and starred in Harikrishnans alongside Mammootty and Juhi Chawla. The film was a commercial success but was not received well by critics.^[31] The movie had two versions of climaxes which were screened in different regions based on whether Mammootty or Mohanlal was more popular there.^[32] This, however, became controversial when lawsuits were filed claiming that prints exhibited in Hindu-dominated areas showed Mohanlal marrying the heroine, whereas the ones in Muslim-dominated areas showed Mammootty marrying her.^[33]
Mohanlal depicted a Kathakali dancer whose personal life is a tragedy in the 1999 Indo-French period drama Vaanaprastham directed by Shaji Karun. Since Mohanlal was not trained in Kathakali, he took tips from reputed Kathakali dancers to essay the role for which he received his second National Award for Best Actor and fourth Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor.^[10] It was also adjudged the best feature film of the year and won the best editing award at National Film Awards. The film was also selected for the competitive section at the Cannes Film Festival and several other international festivals and won six Kerala State awards.^[1]^[34]^[35]
In 2000, Mohanlal starred in Narasimham playing a rogue with a good heart.^[36] It became one of the highest grossing movies in the history of Malayalam cinema.^[37] In the next two years, Mohanlal was typecasted in similar larger-than-life action hero roles in movies like Ravanaprabhu, Thandavam, Praja, Onnaman and Chathurangam. These movies were widely criticised for their repetitive plots, lewd dialogues, punch lines and male chauvinistic outlook.^[37]^[38]^[39]^[40]^[41]"The Narasimham hangover is terrifically strong and it has, at least for the moment, killed the prospects of good films. I don't see any other reason for the failure of well made female-oriented films like Mazha and Madhuranombarakkattu," wrote The New Indian Express.^[37]The director Priyadarshan commented, "Mohanlal is the complete actor who can excel in both action and comedy. But it is a pity that the actor fell into an image trap after "Narasimham", when he became the one-man entertainer who could dance, fight, and sing!" ^[42] Mohanlal has defended the poor performance of his movies saying that a "movie is a joint effort" where the actor "is just a vehicle to convey what comes as a thought to the writer" and the number of "great story tellers.. have dwindled" in Malayalam cinema.^[15]
In 2002, Mohanlal played the role of D. Sivanandan, a Mumbai police officer,^[10] in his first Bollywood movie, Company, which introduced him to the Hindi-speaking audience in India and for which he won the IIFA Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor.^[43]^[44] The movie dealt with the real life story of two underworld dons who ruled Mumbai played by Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi. Mohanlal's performance was well-received. The Hindu noted that the actor is "at his natural best" and "does not look stifled or anxious as other South Indian stars do when they appear in a Hindi movie for the first time".^[45]
The following year, Mohanlal, trying to change his action hero image,^[46] returned to humour roles with Kilichundan Mampazham, Balettan, Hariharan Pilla Happiyanu and Mr. Brahmachari. Kilichundan Mampazham, promoted as a comeback vehicle for the actor, received good reviews but did not perform well in the box-office.^[47]^[48] Balettan, directed by V M Vinu, was an "average story" which had "nothing new to offer",^[49]^[50] but was a commercial success.^[51] Mohanlal plays the role of Balettan, a bank employee always willing to lend a helping hand, who is forced to hide many secrets after his father's death leading to his family's mistrust.^[49] In 2004, Natturajavu and Mambazhakkalam were his notable commercial successes.^[52]
Still fighting the larger-than-life image, Mohanlal appeared in the 2005 comedy Udayananu Tharam as an aspiring film director. Well-received by the audience and the critics, the movie did well even in places where Malayalam films do not run in regular shows like Vadodara, Rajkot, Pune and Ahmedabad.^[23] In the same year, he appeared in director Blessy's second film Thanmathra, a film that tells the story of an individual suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The film received positive reviews and Mohanlal's performance was praised.^[53] Mohanlal won Kerala State Award for Best Actor for his performance in a difficult role; his character does not speak in the second-half of the movie.^[54] An "aesthetically shot" scene in which the husband, a dark shot of Mohanlal in nude, is distracted by a lizard on the wall while having sex with his wife was deleted after it became controversial in the conservative Kerala society.^[53]^[55]
In 2006, he worked with the director Sathyan Anthikkad, after nearly a decade, in the movie Rasathanthram. Although a commercial success,^[56] the movie received mixed reviews.^[57] Rediff.com enjoyed the movie, though it used "different elements that are tried and tested over the ages" and commented that "Mohanlal, though repeating himself for the umpteenth time, pleases."^[58] Mohanlal also acted in Keertichakra by director Major Ravi, in which he plays the role of an Indian Army officer Major Mahadevan. The movie was shot in Kashmir.^[59] and was a commercial success.^[60] A dubbed version of the movie was released in Tamil as Aran, but Mohanlal disassociated himself with the movie since his voice was not used, stating that "I prefer to speak for my role in the film." ^[61] Mohanlal also acted in the sequels Kurukshetra (2008) and Kandahar (2010).
In 2007, Mohanlal won the Kerala State Award for Best Actor for his performance in the movie Paradesi. Although a commercial failure, the movie garnered positive reviews,^[62] with Sify.com noting that "Mohanlal is mesmerising and reinvents the idiom of acting once more with feeling." ^[63] The same year, he appeared in his second Bollywood movie, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, and in Hallo, which became one of the biggest Malayalam hits of 2007.^[64] In Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, a remake of Sholay, Mohanlal played the role of the protagonist Narasimha, a cop with a vendetta against the criminal Babban Singh played by Amitabh Bachchan. The movie received extremely poor reviews and Mohanlal's performance was also criticized.^[65]^[66]Rediff.com commented that the actor, forced to speak "farcical, formulaic tripe", "gave up the chase for greatness halfway through".^[67]
In 2009, Mohanlal appeared with Kamal Haasan in the Tamil movie Unnaipol Oruvan. His first film in 2010 was Evidam Swargamanu, directed by Roshan Andrews. His other movies in 2010, Janakan, Alexander the Great, and Kandahar, were commercial and critical failures.^[68] Malayala Manorama criticized his choice of roles commenting that Malayalees did not want to see another "The “I Am Still Superman” Mohanlal Movie" in 2011 and that the actor should "either shape up for the roles he is trying to play or stick to roles that suit him".^[68] His first release of 2011 was the multi-starrer Christian Brothers, released on 18 March 2011 in which he acted alongside Suresh Gopi, Dileep and Sarath Kumar and the latest release is Chinatown, a multi-starrer featuring Dileep and Jayaram, which released on April 14, 2011.

Film career - Golden period (1986-1995)

The late 1980s and early 1990’ are widely regarded as the golden age of Malayalam cinema,^[20] with films characterised by detailed screenplays, lucid narration and fresh ideas narrowing the gap between art and commercial films.^[21] Mohanlal and Mammootty (who was also an upcoming actor at the time) "were lucky" to play very different roles in films "made by the great masters" like G. Aravindan, Hariharan, M T Vasudevan Nair, Padmarajan, Bharathan and Lohithadas.^[22] Mohanlal, along with the actor and scriptwriter Sreenivasan who played his sidekick in several movies, showcased the angst of unemployed, educated Malayali youth forced to adapt to hostile environments in many realistic social satires,^[13] some of which were written by Sreenivasan himself.^[23]
1986 was a significant year in Mohanlal's career. He starred in T. P. Balagopalan M.A., directed by Sathyan Anthikad, for which he received his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor.^[24] He portrayed an unemployed young man who shoulders the responsibility of his family. His performance in Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam as a harassed house-owner won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Malayalam) also. Mohanlal was touted as the new Malayalam superstar after the box-office success of Rajavinte Makan in which he played an underworld don^[25] He also starred in the tragedy Thalavattom, an uncredited adaptation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, playing Vinod, a young man who becomes mentally ill upon witnessing his girlfriend's death. Mohanlal appeared in 36 movies in 1986.^[22]
The following year, Mohanlal starred with Sreenivasan and Shobana in the Sathyan Anthikad comedy Nadodikkattu, which became a box-office success. Mohanlal and Sreenivasan reprised their roles as the detectives Dasan and Vijayan respectively in the sequels, Pattanapravesham(1988) and Akkare Akkare Akkare(1990). Thoovanathumbikal, directed by Padmarajan, in which he portrayed a person torn between his twin love interests, broke many stereotypes in Indian films,^[13]^[26] such as the leading man falling in love with a second woman immediately after he is rejected by the first. The romantic comedy, Chithram, released in 1988, played for 365 days in a theatre, becoming the longest running Malayalam movie^{[citation needed]}. Mohanlal won a Kerala State Special Jury Award in 1988 for his acting in the movies Padamudra, Aryan, Vellanakalude Nadu, Ulsavapittennu and Chithram.^[24]
In 1989, his role of Sethu Madhavan, who dreams of becoming a police officer but ends up as a criminal, in the tragedy Kireedam, earned him a Special Jury award.^[18] Mohanlal later recalled that his portrayal of Sethumadhavan's mental agony, commended as a natural performance, was spontaneous and that he "did what Sethumadhavan, my character, would have done in such a situation", adding that acting was "akin to entering another person’s body." ^[22]
In the early 1990s, Mohanlal acted in a number of notable commercial movies, such as His Highness Abdullah, Midhunam and No.20 Madras Mail. His Highness Abdullah was the first movie produced by Mohanlal, under the banner Pranavam Arts. His romantic comedy Kilukkam (1991) with Revathy is regarded as one of the most popular Malayalam films ever.^[5] His role in Bharatham as a Carnatic singer who is burdened by a jealous brother, earned him the National Award for Best Actor in 1991.^[12] Although not trained in classical dance, he portrayed a Bharatanatyam dancer in Kamaladalam(1992). He took help from his choreographer and his co-actors Vineeth and Monisha for enacting the dance scenes.^[22] Rajashilpi, Sadayam, Yodha and Vietnam Colony were the other successful movies of Mohanlal in the same year. The 1993 drama Devaasuram, written by Ranjith and directed by I. V. Sasi, was one of Mohanlal's most successful films and is regarded as a cult classic^[12] In 1994, Mohanlal starred along with Shobhana and Suresh Gopi in Fazil's Manichitrathazhu in the lead role as a psychiatrist. The film was a critical and commercial success, and became the highest grossing Malayalam film at that time^{[citation needed]}. Sphadikam was his major commercial success in 1995. Mohanlal won his third Kerala State Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a young man who becomes a thug, estranged from his father, upon failing to meet the latter's high expectations.

In 1980, Mohanlal was cast in the lead antagonist role in Manjil Virinja Pookkal^[12] - the directorial debut of Fazil - produced by Navodaya Appachan.The movie, in which debutants Shankar and Poornima Jayaram played the lead roles, became a major hit and for Mohanlal, "there was no looking back".^[15] Mohanlal's friends had sent his application in response to an advertisement by Navodaya Studios.^[16] He auditioned for the role in front of a panel that included well-known directors; two of them gave him poor marks but Fazil and Jijo Appachan liked him.^[17] In an interview with Reader's Digest in 2004, Mohanlal said that his looks as a young man might have fit the villain's image.^[10] By 1983, Mohanlal was credited in more than 25 feature films ^[12] most of which had him play negative roles.^[10] Mohanlal played his first lead role in an ensemble cast, as a young man in love with a girl whom he mistakenly believes to be rich, in the 1984 comedy Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, also the debut of friend and noted film-maker Priyadarshan .^[18] It also marked the beginning of Mohanlal-Priyadarshan duo which later made several successful movies; they have worked together in 29 movies till 2011.^[19] In 1985, he recorded a song for the film Onnanam Kunnil.^[18] Uyarangalil, Nokketha Doorathu Kannum Nattu, Boeing Boeing and Aram + Aram Kinnaram were some of his successful movies in this period.

Mohanlal was born in a Hindu Nair family from Pathanamthitta district, Kerala to mother Shanthakumari and father Vishwanathan Nair on 21 May 1960. He had an elder brother, Pyarelal. His father was a Law Secretary in the Kerala Government. His family was "close-knit with traditional values" and laid emphasis on education.Mohanlal studied at Government Model School, Thycad and graduated with a degree in Commerce from Mahatma Gandhi College,Thiruvananthapuram. As a student, he used to act in plays at school and college. In 1972, Mohanlal was selected as the best actor in his school competing against students from tenth grade while he was in sixth grade.^[Mohanlal acted in his first film Thiranottam in a comic role^[12] while attending college. According to Mohanlal, in college, he was part of a group which was passionate about filmmaking and he acted in Thiranottam at their suggestion and would have become a chef if movies did not happen in his life. The film's producer, Bharath CineGroup was owned by his friends,^[12] including Maniyan Pilla Raju and Priyadarshan.^[He started working in this film on September 4, 1978^{[citation needed]}. The film was completed and censored, but was not released.
