NEW YORK — Someone with a gun opened fire on a street as students were let out of school Friday afternoon, killing one parent who had tried to shield children from harm and injuring an 11-year-old girl and another parent, police and school officials said.

Zurana Horton hovered over students to protect them as shots were fired. She was shot in the face and chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman was hit in an arm and the chest and is in the hospital in critical condition. The 11-year-old girl, a sixth-grader at the Brooklyn school, injured one of her arms and had a graze wound on her cheek.

Police said none of the victims was related. The victims were on a street corner at the back of the elementary school when the gunshots were fired.

It’s unclear how many shots were fired. Seven shell casings from a 9mm semi-automatic pistol were found on the nearby rooftop. Five other shell casings were found on the sidewalk in the front of that building, police said.

Three men were seen fleeing the scene, and police were questioning at least one person. The shooter was being sought, and police offered a $12,000 reward for information in the case, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said.

According to the arrest report, Sarah Lynn Cheek, 34, went to the bar with the 5-year-old child and told the child to, ”Stay here. I’m going to get you a candy bar.” The report says bar patrons saw the child outside the bar alone and called police who arrested Cheek and charged her with child neglect.

Police transported the child back home and made contact with the child’s father who told officers that his 14-year-old daughter was watching the 5-year-old while he was sleeping and that Cheek asked the teen if it was alright to take the child for a walk. The teen agreed and Cheek left with the child.

Erica Ryan pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault and battery on a child causing injury. Although prosecutors requested bail be set at $25,000 the judge set bail at $500 and ordered Ryan to stay away from her boy.

Boston transit police said the 25-year-old Ryan punched her 1-year-old son and called him names for refusing to eat Tuesday on the bus. A “hostile” crowd of fellow passengers surrounded her and wouldn’t let her off the bus until authorities arrived, police said.

After police arrived and separated Ryan from the crowd, she shouted, “No one is going to take my baby!” authorities said. Dried blood was found around the baby’s mouth, police said.

Ryan denied intentionally striking the boy, according to a police report. Her attorney, Adelio De Miranda, didn’t return a phone message Wednesday.

“I was just trying to feed my baby on the crowded bus, then my hand slipped and I hit him in the mouth,” Ryan said, according to the report.

However, three bus passengers told police that Ryan had been verbally abusing the toddler with a series of vulgar expletives.

The boy was treated at a hospital and is now staying with his grandparents.

(Note: Moms…, don’t punch your babies. Judges…, don’t place a 1-year-old into the hands of the people that raised the very monster that was capable of punching her own child. “Hostile” crowd…, great job!)

Officers say the teenager was riding a friend’s bike down the street when her neighbor, 40 year old Kelley Feeley, came out of her apartment and accused the girl of stealing the bike from her daughter. Witnesses told police that she demanded be allowed to inspect bicycle.

When the girl denied that she had stolen the bike and refused to hand it over, Feeley allegedly pulled a gun, pointed it at the girl’s neck, and took the bike from her.

Officers later seized the disputed bicycle from Feeley’s apartment along with several guns.

Feeley is charged with robbery.

Police investigated 26-year-old Ann Marie Kane after Department of Children and Families officials reported three adult-sized bite marks on her son.

According to an arrest report, Kane admitted biting the boy in the past because he was biting his siblings.

DCF has investigated Kane several times in the past. They removed the children from her care during the most recent investigation.

She was being held in the Polk County Florida Jail on Saturday.

(Note: Moms…, please try to refrain from biting your children. There may be better methods of teaching your kids that biting their siblings is not acceptable. If you disagree, bite me.)

The case of the “Hot Sauce Mom” came to light after Beagley sent a videotape of her disciplining the boy (recorded by her daughter, by the way) to the Dr. Phil show. Court documents describe the video as showing Jessica Beagley “forcing (the boy) to swish hot sauce in this mouth while yelling in his face and then forcing him to stand confined in a cold shower while she yelled at him,” reports Reuters.

Upon seeing the video, local prosecutors filed misdemeanor child abuse charges, citing that cold showers and hot sauce are unreasonable methods of punishment. Of course, the judge may not have too much trouble determining what the ideal punishment for her, if found guilty, should be.

The Affordable Care Act will impact nursing law and breastfeeding at work. The Department of Labor is establishing guidelines for the new nursing law, which will including the following provisions:

• Nursing spaces must be made available, and in a place other than a bathroom.
• Women must be allowed to nurse at work for up to one year.
• Employers must provide a reasonable amount of time for actual breastfeeding or pumping.
• Employers do not need to pay women for time spent breastfeeding
• Employers with less than 50 employees may be exempt if they can establish an undue hardship.

Tampa police have arrested the 50-year old mom on Friday on two counts of first-degree murder.

A Tampa police spokesperson told media that Julie Schenecker claims she killed her 13-year-old son Powers “Beau” Schenecke and 16-year-old daughter Calyx Powers Schenecker because “they were mouthy.”

Tampa Police claim they received a call from the concerned mother of Julie Schenecker. Officers arrived on the scene to find Schenecker covered in blood.

Father Parker Schenecker is currently in Qatar serving in the US military.

Update: Reuters is reporting that Julie Schenecker has been sent to hospital for evaluation.

Alexandra V. Tobias pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Wednesday and remains jailed.

The Florida Times-Union reports that she told investigators she was angered because the boy was crying while she was playing the game FarmVille.

The paper also reports that she told investigators she shook the boy, smoked a cigarette to compose herself and then shook him again.

She will be sentenced in December. State guidelines call for 25 to 50 years, but a prosecutor said it could be shorter than that.
