At times, a cake designer needs to be a luxury bag maker as well. Yes, when your client requests for a luxury bag cake such as Louis Vuitton (LV) bag cake.

We need to measure, cut and seal as well. The differences are we bake, whisk and sculpt etc. and we use tools like knife, roller, spatula, brushes...... :)

I love being a 'part-time' luxury bag maker in fact. I wish I could do more bags for more wonderful people out there. They must be so special to someone to be gifted a unique birthday cake like this.

It's 2022! This is my first commissioned cake in the brand new year.

It is a cake specially made for the celebration of new priest. How honored am I to be given a chance to make the cake! It's a design given by the client. Credit should be given to the original creator.

Talking about this blog, oh gosh! my last post of the blog was written 7 years ago! What had happened for this past 7 years?

Actually, I slowed down the business, only limited orders was taken and in 2017, I had even stopped the business to focus on my brother's new venture.

Then the pandemic of Covid-19 hit in 2020.

So much challenge ahead.

I decided to come back with a clear and solid plan.

Please treat me as new kid on the block, hahah!

I have so much to learn and keep up with the new trend.

Cute Safari Animals Cake For One Year Old Birthday

I made this safari animals themed cake for little Melanie and it was the second 1st birthday cake we had made for the family. Melanie's sister got our ever popular FF bears cake. Besides bears, safari animals can be equally cute in the right shapes and colors, don't you agree?

I love the color combination of purple and pink. I used to mix blue and red or pink to get purple color but Americolor range of purple, I didn't have to do that and the purple obtained was clean and clear. The trees were made of styrofoam inside, just poke it with satay skewers, they were ready to stand upright.

New Peacocok Wedding Cake

The peacock wedding cake is so popular among Indians. This is our latest peacock cake design. Instead of gumpaste feathers, the client requested for 'real' feathers, she bought the features from Little India, Penang.

The cake was decorated with lotsa sugar beads and stones. I tried to make them shine by brushing a layer of corn syrup on them. The peacock looked more natural as compared to my creation few years back, do you agree?

When I look at my cake, I tend to forget about the flavours of cake that I did. Perhaps I should come out with more interesting new flavours that would make an impact into my brain.

Oh yeah, recently, I have finally included red velvet flavour into our flavour list. Also, we have this traditional pandan flavour added. Within a short period of introduction, the red velvet cake has gained some good comments from our clients. Red velvet plus cream cheese is simply killing to my own tastebuds, I guess you should give it a try too.

Three Ponies Cake

I love ponies. To make these ponies, it took me 2 days, they were much more difficult to make than I had thought of. I was extremely happy with the result though. Every details count, especially their eyes, three of them had three different eye shapes, brows and colors. As we know, the soul of an animal is portrayed from its eyes, once its soul is 'created', it is alive.

I used a mixture of gumpaste and fondant to sculpt them, not the usual CMC added fondant. It helped to strengthen the structures, the ponies wouldn't fall in the process of drying and they would stand firm for a long time.

Modelling of sugar figurines is therapeutic if you're not in a rush to finish it off, that's the reason that I have always wished that I could have plenty of time to execute a cake design. However, in commercial world, it's simply a luxurious dream for me.

Yes, people would ask for something more trendy and fancy these days. The youngsters today have their own thought and preference too, they would tell you exactly what they want.

I didn't get to do 21st birthday cakes often until this year. From fancy floral designs to musical theme, 21st birthday has become a more significant milestone in life.

Adorable White Cat Cake For Valerie

Meow....are you there?

I looked back my cake pictures kept in my computer and found this adorable white cat cake. I remember it was shared on my FB page as soon as it was picked up by Valerie's mum. It was special as it's the 2nd cake ordered for Valerie since her 1st birthday cake -- a baby dragon cake and the cake was designed by her mum, how talented and loving she is.

I tried my best to execute the sweet girlish design which includes a handcrafted white cat (I guess she has a name) then there is basic stringwork with little heart decor surrounding the cake. It looks simple but absolutely lovely!

Valerie is definitely one of the luckiest kids in the world.

Bow And Heart Wedding Cake And Cupcakes Tower

Chinese New Year is around the corner, it's an important occasion for us Chinese. There is a saying, "一年之计在于春" which means a plan of the year should be made in the spring, the beginning of the year in lunar calendar. So, I have better started to plan.

I have been planning to share my caking techniques but due to tight schedule, I could hardly make it happen. Perhaps it's time for me to put this plan in priority this year.

I need to suggest more challenging cakes to my clients too in the hope of improving my skills. The air-brush machine that I bought last year is still kept in the store room, I wish I got the chance of using it on a commissioned cake soon. So, who likes to have air-brushed cake design, on a 3D cake perhaps? Please let me know ya...:)

Every good post needs good pictures. My photography skill has to be improved. I bought a better camera recently, hopefully I will put it into good use and do some styling on my cakes and desserts ?

As promised, today I would like to highlight about snake zodiac. Snake people, ha ha...I mean those born in the year of snake are not evil like what we thought about the Snake who seduced Eve into sin, but they are charming, intellectual and generous with family and friends.

Dumbo Themed Dessert Table For Baby Ian Herng

We made this dessert table for a friend's baby's full moon (or full month, 满月) celebration. It was our first dessert table and the theme was baby Dumbo!

We were excited with our new venture. Designing and preparing a dessert table were something new and challenging for us. Hence, we were extremely careful in planning, matching the colours, desserts and types of containers, not forgetting the labels, picks, banners and poster etc before actually producing all the cake and non-cake materials.

It's a lot of work but we truly enjoyed the process. When every pieces came together, it was like an accomplishment of a project, you felt the joy and happiness!

Welcome to baby Ian Herng's full moon party. We had mini jelly cups and chocolates with personalized wrappers for the small and big kids.

And koo, a nonya dessert made of glutinous rice (skin) and sweetened shredded coconut is a symbol of health and longivity for Chinese, especially the Hokkiens. Hence, we thought it could be blended into the design of a dessert table for baby fullmoon party.

Red egg, another personalized dessert for baby full moon which symbolizes a blessed new life. We thought it was interesting to put the red eggs in a little basket stuffed with shredded colour paper, just like a nest, isn't it?

The spring of love, mineral bottle with personalized label, it will surely quench your thirst for love, hehe......

Safari Animals Children Birthday Cakes And Workshop

We have done jungle animals birthday cakes and now safari animals birthday cake. The client showed us a reference cake on the net and we modified it to have a neater cake and animals of client's delight. We were happy with the result and even decide to conduct ca class on the sculpting of two of the animals, the zebra and the leopard :)

3D Train Cake With Simpson's Family And Animals, Choo...Choo...

I was so excited when I was commissioned this 3D train cake. When I was shown a sample of the cake done by the magnificent Australian cake designer Verusca Walker, I was quite thrilled and questioned myself if I was able to do it.

The main challenge of the cake is to get sharp edges on the square cakes which make up the train cake. As I don't ganache my cakes or I should say I'm not used to ganaching a cake which was popular among Australian cake designers, I was wondering if I could get sharp edges on the cakes? Yup, I use buttercream to crumb coat and 'seriously' cream a cake in my own way before covering it with a thin layer of fondant.

I guess most fondant cake designers are challenge takers. So am I. I just accepted the order and figured out what I gonna do next.

The clients wanted to include The Simpsons figurines besides the circus animals. That's interesting, isn't it? Moreover, they liked to have road signs along the railway. Well, they asked and they got it.

The cake was actually meant for a birthday co-celebration for Cindy and Daemian, where Cindy was the aunt of Daemian, a one year old toddler. Cindy simply loved The Simpsons.

The clients said The Simpsons should lead the animals, so they were placed in front of the train and followed by the animals at the back. I tried to include as many animals as possible, even the penguins from Antarctica, hehe!

After getting sharp edges on square cake with my buttercream technique, I am more confident that buttercream can do wonder on sharp edges.

The client was so kind to send us the group picture of their party. What a united and joyful family! Look at the T-shirt they were wearing, so cute!

Peacock Wedding Cake Frenzy

We made 2 sets of peacock themed wedding cake recently, one to be delivered to UIE Plantation at Pantai

Remis, Perak and the other one locally at Dewan Sri Mariamman, Butterworth. Both of the brides were impressed with our previous peacock cake and decided to commission us to make the same wedding cake for them.

One of them even came all the way from Pantai Remis to make the booking, she ordered her engagement cake from us too.Another bride booked the cake 9 months in advance, the earliest booking we had ever received. We were overwhelmed by their response.

A garden wedding was held at UIE Plantation, it was an eye opener to us. The setting of the venue was truly a fairy tale. We were also impressed with the cake-cutting ceremony which was led by a 'long-legged' robot. It was so creative and interesting!

The above was delivered to Butterworth. It was our second time witnessing the gorgeous decoration done by the same company at the same hall. It was also our second time delivering peacock wedding cake and cupcakes to the same venue.

Why does Indian like peacock? In fact, I was told by my Indian friend that peacock symbolizes grace, pride and beauty. It is a bird of joy, so it's so meaningful to have a peacock themed wedding coupled with peacock cake and cupcakes.

Wish both the couples to have blissful and joyful marriage lives.

2-Tiered Pororo Cake And More

2-tiered children birthday cakes are getting popular. I love to make 2-tiered birthday cakes too.

It offers 3 levels of space for decoration. I can put the figurines on 3 different levels without crowding the space and every figurines can be seen clearly. There are more sense of depth visually and the deco are more lively and attractive. The sizes of the cake tiers could be 6" and 8" for simpler design or 6" and 9" to accomodate more figuriens. Each cake can feed around 35 - 45 pax, so if you have a small party with close family members and friends, it should be just nice.

Whenever my clients ask for a cake with this feeding size, I would usually suggest a 2-tiered cake instead of a single tier 'big' cake to them. Whatever theme you ask for, 2-tiered cake can be easily used as a platform to showcase it. It is so versatile!

Look at our 2-tiered Pororo cake, Baby TV cake and cutie animals castle cake, aren't you agree what I have written here is correct?

Corporate Cupcakes And Cookies - Versatile Treat For Corporate Staff

Cupcakes have been a trend of treat for the past few years. They are easy to be distributed to guests without cutting and messing up the table. Cupcakes are small, cute, neat and well accepted by adults and kids. From birthday party to wedding reception, cupcakes have never failed to impress the guests with their design and set up. By arranging cupcakes on a tower or cupcakes stand, cupcakes can be very presentable.

Recently we have started to receive cupcakes order from factories. Corporate order of cupcakes can be huge and fun. Besides logo of the company, the design can actually base on the theme of an event such as anniversary celebration, staff activity, product launching, award presentation etc. The possiblity is unlimited. As long as the event needs food to feed the staff, cupcakes can make their present.

The petite cakes are so versatile, lively and fun-filled. They would usually be grabbed up as soon as the event manager says,"let's start eating!" :)

You can have the logo, theme or quote printed on edible sugar sheet or edible image as we call it, paste or stick on the cupcakes. Besides cupcake, cookie is another wonderful decorating medium as well. We like to match it with the cupcake as corporate gift to the staff.

Keep Going

Hello, long time no see. I know I have been MIA but never know that it has been 4 months, so sorry! Time really flies, I should improve my time management, that's what my bestie has warned me, *grin*.

In fact, I'm still in the same scene of cake, my everyday life couldn't run away from my job, sugar, flour and eggs, ya, I'm still a part time baker, chasing time till wee hours nightly and wake up with dark eye circles rushing to my full time workplace.

Luckily, mom is still willing to help me though she grumbles about my cakes everyday! *laugh*

Alright, I know I'm crazy but when I receive the compliments from clients and see smiles on the little faces, I will forget about my stress and tiredness.

When there is new enquiry about the same 'complicated' and 'technically difficult' cake, I will say 'yes, why not?'

When a difficult task is taken twice, it becomes easier, thrice, more easier, right? And so, I manage to keep myself going, though not by leaps and bounces, I'm growing......

3D Chanel Cakes For Girl's Birthday

Undoubtedly, 3D fashion themed birthday cakes are girls' favourite. Chanel and LV are 2 most popular brands among all which are regularly replicated in the form of cakes.

Our highlight today is a set of Chanel's dinner bag and box commissioned by Billie. She looked so beautiful posing with her roses and Chanel cakes.

The cakes were quite heavy, the whole box, including its cover and the dinner bag was made of cakes. It must be real cool cutting them. Perhaps I should make myself a designer bag cake one day! :)

Mommy Makes My Birthday Cake

It's holiday season. After making so many cakes in 2012, we at Mom & Daughter Cakes would like to slow down our pace and plan for 2013. We would like thank the support of all our clients, fans and friends for the past 3 years.

From baking cupcakes to birthday cakes and then wedding cakes, it's a journey of learning which is full of

trials and errors. We appreciate the comments, compliments and even critics from our clients, you guys have brought us to where we ar today, thank you.

In 2013, we would like to start sharing some techniques of baking and cake decorating with you. We hope that more moms, mm..not necessary moms, it could be daughters or anyone with a loving heart to pick up basic skills of cake decorating such that they can make unique and personalized cakes with their own hands for their loved ones.

Look at these three cakes for little ones, if you could make them yourself for your kid, how nice, isn't it? "Mommy makes my birthday cake!" Your kid would be so proud of you.

Owl Cake For 1st Birthday

I nearly miss out this owl cake. Not ordinary for a 1st birthday, Aurelia's mom asked for 'something different' for her daughter's 1st birthday cake. She thought of an owl at last after considering various whimsical choices.

Well, I was so excited to read that in her email. The owl must look beautiful, girlish and pinkish. The mom put so much hope on my creation. I told myself I wouldn't disappoint her. From the reference given, I tried to tweak and include other elements in the design. Colours play an important role in bringing out the design. I was cautious on that and hoped that the colours chosen not only matching with the theme but playing the magic.

The end result was pleasing and undoubtedly it is one of my favourite cakes thus far.

Lovely Bears Birthday Cakes For Children

Do you love Forever Friends Bears? I guess the answer is yes for most of the girls and some boys too, hee..

They are not only our forever friends but they are forever young. Recently I've made a few cakes with the Forever Friends Bears theme, they were mostly commissioned for the 1st birthdays.

Besides the main bear, some would like to have extra bears to put around their cakes or sitting on top of cupcakes, I think they are equally cute :) What do you think?

More Indian Wedding Cakes And Our Appreciation

I really like to do Indian themed wedding cakes. They are usually bold, vibrant and colourful. I like their concept of feeding each other, parents and relatives cake as part of the wedding reception, it's a symbol of love and sharing of the sweetest moment in life with their loved ones.

Many have enquired about the peacock themed wedding cakes since I blogged about it. I found the video of the wedding reception taken by Digimax Video Productions, the cake was featured in the video, so as the cake designer, that's me, hahah! Wanna have a look?

I'd like to share 2 beautiful wedding cakes with you that I did back in July. They are challenging, I have to make 50 pcs of roses, arranged in cascading form from top to the bottom of cake besides the lovely couples standing on top.

Another cake is a saree themed cake. It was my first trial doing a fabric effect fondant deco, thankfully everything run smooth. I dusted the roses with gold dust and made a pair of bride and groom in their traditional wedding suits too.

The bride texted me right after the wedding reception:

"Thanks 4 the cake. It tastes good n the design was superb."

It really made my day and I would like to express my appreciation for the opportunity given by Indian friends and clients to be part of their big days. It was really special to me!

Hi, long time no see. Sorry for the long absence. Not that I was lazy but was thinking of presenting something special for our blog or site. Besides showcasing our cakes and cupcakes, I wish I could share some beautiful outdoor pictures with you, just like what you see now, not only cakes but people in the pictures.

Who doesn't know them? I made 2D version of Mickey and Minnie for my cupcakes, both were given to the kid models, a 3 years old boy, Pherng and a 7 years old girl, Lina. They loved them, hehe......

Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore And Piglet 1st Birthday Cake - Fully Cropped

Cake photography is as important as cake designing. Good picture enhances the beauty of a cake and vice versa. A gorgeous cake may appear to be less sensational if the picture quality is poor. Average cake would look below average if it is not captured under proper lighting and set up.

Again, I don't have a good camera to take good picture. Hence, I always need to adjust the brightness and contrast of the picture. This is called basic editting I suppose. My photo editting skill is so limited that I didn't even know how to crop a picture.

I told myself I gotta learn it as I don't always have time to set up a proper background for the cake. Yes, I'm always in a rush!

After nearly 3 years into baking and decorating cakes and cupcakes, finally, I learned it! Hahah......how slow am I. I used a software downloaded from the internet to crop this picture, ya, it's not photoshop, I'm yet to touch photoshop, it looks too sophisticated to me, :p

So, presenting to you my very first fully cropped cake photo, hope you like it, :).

Minnie And Friends 1st Birthday Cake For Hayley

Hayley is 1! We did her full moon cupcakes when she was 1 month last year. How time flies! Justina is the proud mom of Hayley and a very friendly client of MND Cakes. She told me that Hayley had become a small fan of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cartoons, especially Mickey and Minnie.

We decided to make Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy for her 1st birthday cake. I made the baby version of them as Hayley is still small. They would appear like her peers.

I can't stop staring at them after assembling them on the cake. I wish I could keep them for myself, hehe!

Pastel Colours On Children Birthday Cakes

Recently I start to fall in love with the ussage of pastel colours in children birthday cakes. They tend to leave an ever lasting impact on the cake design. You simply can't get bored of it by looking your cake pictures over and over again.

On health basis, pastel colours leave lesser colour pigments in icing too, though edible and FDA approved, these pigments are still considered chemicals, lesser is better, especially to the kids.

Hence, you may see a series of children cakes from us in pastel colours from now onwards.

Trying to do little flowers painting on the sugar fonts too. It adds girliness to the cake for Klaire, a 1 year old girl. Here's the whole cake, the toppers mimics Klaire's favourite soft toys, adding personality to the cake.
