WORK at HOME JOB FACTS: Online Surveys
Trade Your Opinions for Some Quick Cash

In these tough economic times, every penny counts... and completing online surveys is a great way to add extra dollars to your income.

Survey agents are willing to pay you for your opinion and your time to help provide direction for companies- because companies are struggling too, trying to determine how to get the best products to market that consumer's want.

Participating in online surveys is not a "get rich quick" opportunity, but you can put real money in your pocket every month. Surveys pay anywhere from $1 to $200 each, and sometimes more.

Don't scoff at the $1 minimum either, most of the low paying surveys take only a few minutes to complete. Complete ten $1 surveys in twenty minutes and you're averaging a pay rate of $30 an hour- not too shabby.

You can easily cash in on this growing trend as long as you have:

a working computer with an internet connection (dial up connections are okay, but may cause delays when connecting to or completing surveys)
the willingness to earn extra money
the willingness to give honest responses to survey questions, descriptive feedback, and to sometimes tap into your creativity
a ½ hour to an hour a day to check for and complete surveys
If you meet the qualifications, the next step is to consider setting up a separate email accountfor your survey activity.

It's okay to use your main email, but if you create a separate email just for surveys, it will help keep things organized and help keep you in the mindset that each time you open your survey account, you will working and you will be earning.

If you don't have the ability to set up extra email accounts through your regular email service provider, you can easily sign up for free accounts at Google.com or Yahoo.com.

Once you have your survey email address, it's time to find the major players in the survey company arena (meaning companies who pay you the most for your opinion and who pay promptly.)

Another way to find new survey companies is to simple run a Google search for "paid surveys" or "survey companies."

However, when running your own search, watch out for mock survey websites- these are sites that promise you "hundreds" or "thousands" a month for signing up with them. Don't believe the hype, these are mostly scam websites harvesting your information to re-sell elsewhere.

Most importantly when running your own search, remember to never, ever pay someone for a survey list or access to taking surveys. These offers are not legit. Money should flow to you when you participate in surveys, not away from you into someone else's pocket.

It takes a little setup time to establish yourself with survey companies, but it's well worth it. Be persistent and consistent and check your survey company websites for opportunities daily. For a very small time investment, you can earn a nice side income.

A cold by any other name ....

My husband gets three or four colds every winter. These aren't just 'colds' These are 'oh, I'm exhausted, I can't get out of bed, I'm sneezing, coughing, aching, miserable' colds. At first I thought it was just a Guy Thing -- you know, 'woe is me, I'm sick' (while the female in the house continues her daily chores through cramps, colds, fevers, chills, etc.) But I think it really does hit him that bad, or at least he thinks it does.

It's all a matter of perception, isn't it? When I get a sniffle I take DayQuil and Zicam, carry tissues, and get on with my life. To me a cold is just an annoyance. I've felt worse (at least once a month).

When he gets sick, it stops him in his tracks. He's so unaccustomed to dealing with illness that when it happens, he succumbs. This is not to say I'm superwoman or anything. I had food poisoning recently and that stopped me in my tracks, believe me (for a few days!) But something like a cold just isn't worth wasting my few sick days from work. I've got too much to juggle to let a weasly old cold stop me (writing, deadlines, work, my elderly mother & her care, groceries, laundry, conferences ... you know what it's like). If I'm going to drop something, I'm going to drop it because I was Really Sick, not just Sniffly Sick.

I have discovered a universal cure-all for his colds, though. And yes, it's chicken soup. It's really simple:

Buy a roaster chicken at the grocery store (the ones on the rotisserie). Eat what you want of it and put the leftovers in a big pot. Add assorted herbs & goodies (thyme, rosemary, celery, garlic, onions, that leftover parmesan rind, whole peppercorns). I add whatever veggies I have that are getting a tiny bit beyond their prime, too. Bring to a boil then simmer for an hour. Remove chicken carcass and pull off whatever meat remains.

Strain the stock back into the pot, put the meat back in and add mushrooms, a new onion, a new stalk or two of celery, a bit of garlic minced, some carrots and whatever other vegetables you have on hand. Simmer until veggies are tender. Put in some rice or noodles if you'd like. At the last minute put in a few frozen veggies if you've got them, add some seasoning then serve. I toss in a boullion cube, a package of dry onion soup mix, and (yes, believe me) a bit of pickle juice.

It works every time. I think the smell of the stock cooking and the anticipation cures him more than the actual food. And I like it because I don't have to do much: toss it in a pot, let it simmer, strain it, chop up some veggie, let it simmer some more. Serve with some store-bought bread, and you're good to go.

Let's hope this latest cold is his last of the winter. If it isn't, I'll run to the store and buy another chicken -- cheap, quick, and simple to do. Who needs expensive drugs when you've got Chicken Soup?

Talks about publication, the new year, and Tiramisu!

Here we are, facing a new year. In 2006 I signed my first publishing contract, and I now have 8 books out, 4 more scheduled for next year and 5 scheduled for 2010. Whoa. How things change.

And yet they don't change THAT much. I still worry when I submit a book ("will the editor like it?" "will I have a bunch of changes to make before they buy it?"), I'm still grateful when a manuscript is bought, and I'm still amazed that people buy my books and seem to love my stories -- I thought I was the only one who would love a wise-cracking dog who communicates telepathically with a prissy, uptight guy. But people seem to love Cerberus, the dog in my latest book, "Endurance" and Nico, the hero.

I promised myself when I started the Road to Publication that I would (1) have fun doing it, (2) not take myself too seriously and (3) write the kinds of stories I want without feeling compelled to change the age of the h/h (mine are middle-aged) or add a bunch of sex (my books are 'spicy' but not 'hot'). So far, so good. I'm still finding editors to buy them and readers to read them, so I'm going to stick with it for a while longer.

Speaking of Nico: I'm including his recipe for tiramisu. Nico was infected with an immortality virus and has had a chance to study a lot of careers: musician, chef, assassin ... He once attended culinary school with Julia Child and that's where he learned this recipe.

I hope you all have a happy and safe holiday season and are all looking forward to 2009. There's a lot of challenges ahead for the country and its people, but I think we're up to the task. Exciting times lie ahead!

Nico’s Eggless Tiramisu

½ cup brewed coffee, cooled ¼ cup Amaretto liqueur
8 oz mascarpone cheese ¾ cup heavy cream
1 tbsp vanilla 20 ladyfingers
1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
3 tbsp sugar

Combine coffee & amaretto. Divide the cheese in half, stirring coffee mixture into one half. Set aside. Whip cream with vanilla and sugar in a medium bowl until stiff peaks form. Fold whipped cream into remaining cheese.

Line a 7x11 dish with parchment paper and put 10 ladyfingers in the bottom. Spoon half of the coffee mixture over the cookies. Top with half of the whipped-cream mixture. Repeat layers. Sprinkle with cocoa. Refrigerate overnight before serving.

As I write this, the snow is flying outside -- not much but enough to make me appreciate the fire in the fireplace, that's for sure.

On a gloomy day like this, I often snuggle in to write, but today I'm going to venture out to car shop. The frugal part of me balks at this activity, but the practical side of me says I should. My current car isn't that old, but I feel I need an all-wheel drive car in the snowy North. I had one a few years back but traded 'up' for a front-wheel drive car.

Big mistake. I've sweated through three winters, worrying about my commute. So I've decided to learn my lesson, take the trade-in, and get a car that will get me through my winters. I'm somewhat consoled by the fact the trade-in will be good (already got an estimate) so I'm not going to be out of pocket too much.

So here's what I've learned from this experience:

1. Don't be swayed by what dealers tell you. No, a FWD car isn't the same as an AWD car and no, I won't get accustomed to a FWD car easily.

2. Go with your gut instinct. Do you love the car? Does it feel right? Does it fit you?

3. Take the spouse with you to test drive it and DEMAND that he tell you how it feels to him. I took the Spouse with me to test drive the last car, but he didn't give me his opinion until AFTER I've bought it -- too late to inform that 'gee, it's not very comfortable for me in the passenger seat.' Since I do most of the driving in the family in my car, this was an ISSUE. Sigh. This time he has to come with me to give it a try.

4. Be prepared to walk away. The sales people will try to do their jobs -- put you in a car that might be outside your $$ comfort zone. Walk away if needed. Explain gently but firmly that you want to spend $X.XX and really no more. Smile, be polite, and leave if needed. I did that yesterday. I drove the car, loved it, said I'd think about it. I'll call 'em back today and dicker over the phone ('do you have an older model one? I'd really like to shave some money off the price.')

5. Give them contact info that won't interfere with your life. I gave them my cell phone # (I seldom turn on my phone) and my 'spare' email address. Messages can merrily pile up and I won't care.

A new book, a new recipe!

As you know, I like to have a recipe that I use for promo for my books. The books aren't about cooking, but the dish shows up in the book, then I create a recipe card for it and use that as promo for the book.

Well, I got the cart before the horse this time: I've got a recipe, but didn't have the book.

Luckily, I was working on a new book and I found a way to sneak this item in there. Isn't it funny how that happens sometimes? You have something good that sort of falls into your lap, but you're not quite sure how to use it. Then you turn around, and voila: there's the use!

The heroine in this book is a woman who's inherited some Big Money (or she will inherit it if her ex-brother-in-law will drop his lawsuit). I try very hard to keep politics, etc., out of my books, but some of the recent political figures are just too good to pass up -- I couldn't make up characters like that!

So a couple of the characters are based on people in the news today. Depending on how the elections come out this fall, we'll see if my villain scenario is right or wrong .

Give this one a try: it should be interesting since I've never seen a recipe for single-serving chocolate cake. Here's a caveat: I haven't tried this one yet, but I have it on good authority that it's yummy.

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons cake flour(that’s plain flour, not self-rising)
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips(optional)
a small splash of vanilla
1 coffee mug

Directions:
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well
Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).
