Summer 2011, I had the opportunity , as the 1st prize of an editing contest, to spend a week in Whistler with RedBull Media House.

This edit is a compilation of all the best shots i captured during the week, including Crankworx RedBull Joyride and some behind the scenes shots of Sean Pettit Profile Shoot with Freeride Entertainment (first part of the story, heading to the Rutherford Glacier with Riley Leboe and Mike Henitiuk). All in all, it was a sick week and I'd like to thanks everyone who made it possible!

RED BULL CRASHED ICE SOUS LES FLASHES DES CAMÉRAS

Que vous aimiez chausser des patins, descendre à toute allure sur vos skis ou que vous soyez un fervent adepte de sports extrêmes, de derby de démolition et de spectacle monumental, le Le Red Bull Crashed Ice est fait pour vous! J’ai eu la chance unique d’être invité comme média étudiant au prestigieux événement à Québec, qui se trouve à être aussi la finale de la coupe du monde du Crashed Ice.

En partant là-bas, j’avais comme idée d’écrire probablement sur le voyage étudiant dans lequel j’étais ou bien sur mon expérience en général de l’événement. Rendu à Québec dans la salle des médias, je remarque alors un visage familier, Félix Rioux. Je connais Félix principalement à cause du milieu du freeski. Il est co-fondateur et président du IF3, le Festival International de Films de Freeski, aussi co-fondateur de la boutique de ski et patin D-Structure Proshop, mais en fin de semaine il est photographe pour Red Bull Canada. L’idée de présenter le Crashed Ice en décrivant l’expérience d’un caméraman m’a alors traversé l’esprit puisque je suis aussi un passionné de caméra. Je me suis donc assis avec Félix pour une courte entrevue avant la grande finale du samedi afin qu’il me parle un peu de son expérience.

Photographe depuis 14 ans, cela fait 3 ans que Félix couvre certains événements canadiens organisés par Red Bull. Cette semaine, il revient tout juste d’un Stage de perfectionnement de 6 semaines en Europe : Le Red Bull Photofiles. Il dit qu’il a appris beaucoup sur l’entreprise, sur le type de photographies et de post-production que la compagnie recherche. «C’est une grosse machine», dit le photographe en parlant de Red Bull et de tout ce qui l’entoure. Au cours des deux dernières décennies, Red Bull a amassé un énorme trésor de contenu médiatique de leurs événements, qui se nomme maintenant le Red Bull Content Pool. Un trésor tu dis? Oui, oui! Toutes les photos et vidéos de l’événement se retrouvent sur le site où les médias peuvent naviguer et sélectionner ce qu’ils veulent pour leur article ou autre!

Avec l’aide de deux assistants, ainsi que trois autres photographes professionnels, Félix devait couvrir l’événement en entier, en passant par les portraits d’athlètes aux conférences et la course elle-même. L’événement étant la nuit, cela ajoute une difficulté; placer les flashs dans une foule de 105 000 personnes ce n’est pas un jeu d’enfant, sans parler du déplacement de l’équipement. Félix prévoyait, pour la grande finale, avoir accès à quelques toits afin de prendre des plans plus larges et couvrir plus d’action facilement. Son équipement de choix était le Nikon D3 et D700 avec plusieurs lentilles, dont une 24-70 qu’il préfère pour sa versatilité.

Félix semblait autant apprécier sa première expérience en tant que photographe, que moi en tant que spectateur de cet événement grandiose. Il conclut l’entrevue avec une phrase qui résume très bien la fin de semaine : «(Le Red Bull Crashed Ice) c’est très visuel avec les décorations et les lumières sur les immeubles. C’est un spectacle, pas juste une course!»

Electro Gravity Official Release!

In 2009, Trevor Bodogh contacted me for a new project he called the "Tron Project". Being inspired by the actual Tron movie, he thought it was possible to create a special and unique project featuring his cycling skills and a talented production team. He started searching for good people to make this happen, luckily I was one of them.

But what is this project all about? Trevor describes it as: "The title is Electro Gravity, an Extreme Live Action Bicycle Performance, giving a highly visual and unique performance like never before! The 20 minute live feature includes 1-2 professional riders, stunt riding props, and all the visual stimulation you can handle. Built for Night clubs, conferences and all around entertainment and attraction for events."

Trevor and I discussed about this project over a period of 6 months, and he had a good idea of what the desired outcome should be - This is where I was able to offer more ideas from an editors POV. Trevor planned the event in Niagara, his hometown, and everything was shot by Stedi-Cam operator, Kevin Packer on January 27, 2010 in a massive conference hall. The actual 'light suit' which Trevor wore was wired by Patrick of Joe Saver, lighting provided by ByRequest DJ's, and photo by Calvin Frank.

When Trevor travelled to Montreal to meet me, we sat patiently while gigabyte after gigabyte of information were transferred to my hard drive as the 'Electro Gravity' project started to become a reality. I think it took me a solid two weeks to make the editing, making some renders to show Trevor where I was with it and collaborating with him over skype along the way. The video, witch is titled Electro Gravity, has been online for the past 8 months but we decided to keep it low profile. Today, February 1st, we decided to do the OFFICIAL online release with the final updates! We hope it will inspire you to be creative, with anything you do!

On Wednesday, November 16th, Moment Productions proudly premiered its first short film 'Get Creative' in Montreal. For the occasion, the Salon Officiel was packed with riders, friends and family who came to enjoy the work of the director, Nicolas Guy-Caron, and his team. Prior to the main presentation, 'Serious Business' the third installment of TwoBees Media's webisode series, was presented to the public, and helped create the perfect ambiance before the much anticipated presentation of 'Get Creative'.

Je viens d'avoir mon nouveau stabilisateur. Je l'ai donc essayé dans le park à Bromont l'autre jour avec des amis.

This was my first day out with my new stabilizer, Glidecam pro 2000. I was just getting used to it and wanted to try slow motion with 60fps. Shot in a few runs at Bromont during 1h.

Here's an art critic article about Moment Productions. It truly reflect my thoughts.

Une connaissance dont j'ai fait la rencontre plusieurs fois se lance dans la critique d'art. Il a déjà un bon répertoire d'artistes d'un peu partout à Montréal et New York, en plus il écrit très bien. Voici donc ce qu'il a écrit à propos de Moment Productions.
