Get Ready...Get Set...Take the Advocare Challenge!

The 24-Day Challenge™ is a comprehensive supplementation and nutrition program.

There's many different reasons why we set out to do a healthy challenge, isn't there? I think so. Maybe it's to jump start your weight loss, or to get fit and energized, or to simply get on track for a healthier YOU, all these "whys" are important and deserve validation. I've decided to do the Advocare 24-Day Challenge starting tomorrow (5/20/13) to get "back" to where I was about 3 years ago when I decided to live a healthier life. Just in time for our Seattle trip on 6/19!!

A friend of mine and her husband started their new business with Advocare and knew I did reviews on my blog. Jessica asked me if I would consider doing this awesome challenge and blog about my experience and my results. Of course I would, I said. I could even stand to lose a few pounds. She and I knew my motivator wouldn't necessarily be to lose weight, but rather to boost my already intact healthy lifestyle that I'm trying so hard to maintain.

This is me (5/18/13) at almost 140 lbs. That good lookin' guy is my cousin!!

My ultimate goal in doing this challenge is to get myself back to feeling great, and perhaps I'll lose a few inches around my waist! I'm in that Peri-menopausal state and have gain a few pounds around my middle. Well those few pounds have caused me to not be able to wear most of my clothes in my closet. So I am looking forward to getting back to where I was about a year ago so I can fit into ALL THOSE CUTE CLOTHES I BOUGHT! So here we go. No matter where you are in your "healthiness", I hope you'll follow along with me as I go through this 24-day challenge and maybe you too will want to try out the Advocare Challenge!

I'll be posting throughout the 24 days on my blog here, but my two main posts will be on day 11 and on day 25 (the results). I am so excited to be doing this as I've not ever done a challenge like this before, so this is new to me and new to you. I would love to hear from you if you've ever done the Advocare 24-Day Challenge and what your results were. Please leave your comments of encouragement too...I'll need them!

My first 10 days will consist of the Spark drink, the Herbal Cleanse, and OmegaPlex. Along with eating healthy and exercising this should be a great experience.

My second phase (days 11-24) will be to take MNS, Meal Replacement Shakes (I chose the vegetarian shakes), and OmegaPlex.

In a couple of days, I will post some healthy meals that I either got from Advocare or have in my recipe box.

Oh my Oh my...look what I found!!! I'm crazy about gardening and want to include Brody in all I do ...but more excited to find some "not your basic craft" ideas for him.

I was perusing Facebook this morning and ran across this FB Page. I must share!. Toddler Time Tips has started a website and are still working on it. Feel free to view it and please befriend them on Facebook...especially if you have toddlers running around and want to find cute and over the top crafts for them to do. Grandparents - this is for you too!!

They do a garden every year and the kids actually haul the dirt and get it ready. They planted tomatoes and flowers in this years' garden. They are responsible for pulling the weeds and watering each day.

LOVE IT!!! If I lived near them, I would want Brody to go there for sure!!!

My Review:
I've had the distinct pleasure of working with Mia Mariu a couple of times in the recent past, and have enjoyed testing their color products. Super excited to now test out their anti-aging skin care line and share my results with you. My skin seems to be changing rapidly these days and my face could use some tender loving pampering!! Thank you Mai Mariu for coming to my rescue!

After over 2 weeks of using these three products, I can honest give an accurate review. First off, my face is bright & cheery and my eyes feel as though they can weather this nasty allergy season now...bring it on mother nature! I found the scent to the cleanser to be quite subtle and very pleasing. As with the eye treatment, it doesn't take much to get the job done. A very little goes a long way here. I like the fact that I can use it both day and night. The serum is my saving grace. I'm one of those people that LOVED the sun and grew up on weekends at our lake house. My sister and I were the queens of water skiing and we loved the sun. But, however we both are paying the price of that now...it's call sun spots and lots of them...So I'm looking for a miracle here. I'm continuing to see favorable results.

Another thing I notice was that my face never broke out when changing over to these products. That has happened to me before when I have started a new skin care regimen. All three anti-aging products in review are suitable for all skin types, (including sensitive skin), are oil-free and are non-irritating. My face has an overall feel of nourishment and is very soft and hydrating...and that's important to me.

Along with their color products, Mai Mariu also offers vitamins and dietary supplements, as well as their signature eau de parfum, Adorame. I bet that smells wonderful!

# 1 Flaxseed

Flaxseed is bursting with Omega-3 fatty acids that little guys need to grow their brains to their full potential. Buy it ground and sprinkle it over their cereal or add 1/4 cup to their favorite baked-good recipe. They'll get better nutrition without even knowing it.

# 2 Sweet Potatoes

These orange tubers are high in Vitamin A which helps kids develop healthy vision and eyes. And they're delicious roasted, mashed, baked or covered in marshmallows and brown sugar.

# 3 Yogurt

Containers that say "active culture" on the side feature living probiotics that keep kids' digestive tracts working under optimal conditions. And it has more calcium per serving than milk. Plain is best, but you can pique their interest with lots of colorful fruit and honey.

# 4 Hummus

Rod Stewart's New Album "TIME"

Rod Stewart has spent four decades being a rock star, three being a parent, and has a new album's worth of rollicking stories to tell. Time is his first album of new material in almost 20 years (and his hairstyle hasn't changed one bit!).

Here's what Stewart has to say about his new album - "Suddenly ideas for lyrics were piling up in my head," he says. "Next thing I knew, I had a song called 'It's Over' about divorce and separation. And now I was getting up in the middle of the night and scrambling for a pen to write things down, which has never happened to me. I finished seven or eight songs very quickly and I still wasn't done, and it became apparent that I would eventually have a whole album of material to record."

"Rod" (that's what we called him way back when) was a HUGE part of my growing up years. He was my favorite singer when I was 16 years old. His music was played at every party and in every car. We danced ourselves silly with all his music. "Hot Legs" was very popular, as was "Tonight's The Night". I've got many many memories and stories to tell about that era!! It's great to see that he still has it in him.

So, with that said, I'm super excited that he has come out with a new album. My favorite on this album is the first song titled "She Makes Me Happy". It's upbeat and easy to sing along to. That's what I like about "Rod's" music...easy to sing to. You can actually understand him...which says a lot for this day and age music!!

Time, released May 7th, 2013, marks Stewart's long-awaited return to his songwriting roots and features 12 tracks, 11 of which he wrote and produced.

Rod sings about his past ordeals and regrets in this album, and somehow makes them all sounds wonderful!!

Best Places to Visit on Your Southern California Vacation

Southern California is a great place to visit in the summer. It’s hot and sunny, but ocean breezes and dry heat epitomize summer. Michael Buble's New Release - "To Be Loved"

Everyone's favorite Canadian crooner is back again, finding his harmony while making his way through the American songbook (and looking oh-so dapper in a suit)! What a wonderful rendition Michael Buble did with this classic song "To Love Somebody." I am bit old fashion, so to hear this song again and differently makes my heart flutter. It's definitely my favorite song on the album. It's nice to listen to different types of music every now and then and Buble does a very nice job with his own original songs on this album.

These are good times for the singer, who is about to become a first-time dad. He sounds like a man in love with life. "I wrote Close Your Eyes about my wife and about the power of all the women in my life—my sisters, my mom, my grandma and all women in general. Let’s face it, where would we be without them? My mom and dad have been together for many years. Through their ups and downs, they have, and will grow old together.

We are so proud of our mother. She's warm, friendly, loves to sew and is so practical. She taught me how to sew (well, tried to), she gave me my decorating skills, my garden skills...I even have her cooking skills...which is NONE!! Hehehe.

When she would get mad at one of us, she would start out saying: "Tracye, Kim, Darrell.......". She would just go down the line and call us every name but our own...funny! I do that now with Brody and my grand kids.

Relay For Life Fundraiser Special Event

"Enchanted Bloom"

Colors to Cocktails Sip & Paint Art Studio, LLC, Owner/Instructor Yamilette Rodriguez put on a fabulous and worthwhile event on April 26, 2013 at her studio. Twenty-four participants enjoyed painting their "Enchanted Bloom" masterpieces, including me! Yamilette was looking for a blogger to attend and participate in the event, and to blog about their experience. She found me on the Business2Blogger site which we are both a member of. I gladly applied because I love to create things and I'm actually from that area. So this was a win win and I am glad she chose me.

Not only is this cause very dear to her heart, Yamilette herself participates in the actual Relay for Life event each year. She walks for close friends that have either passed away from cancer or who are battling it now. Yamilette gladly gave 50% of the studio fee to the Relay For Life (American Cancer Society).

Regina Eaton, Team Captain for Regina's Warriors Mid-Cities Relay for Life Team, teamed up and had a fun and successful night out with her friends and others while raising funds for this worthwhile cause.

The studio has many customers who support Yamilette's new business located in Bedford, TX and who keep coming back month after month to create their masterpieces. It's a fun stress-free atmosphere and all the events are taught by an artist with their step-by-step instructions. All professional, yet not at all like a class room. You are there to enjoy yourself, sip and paint! This special fundraiser event was just that...fun and laid back. Emily, our instructor, coaxed us along as we all painting our "Enchanted Bloom" masterpieces with our hand and mind. No two alike!!

The evening begin with a very nice set-up for 26 paid participants. This was an opened event, so anyone was able to sign up. We had a canvas on easel, paints (not shown), paint brushes, water cup and apron. It seemed like everyone there was eager to get started. A lot of newbies too!

Participants who were celebrating a birthday. I just happened to know Amy (second to right). It was great seeing her there. What a great way to celebrate a special occasion with your friends.

These Garden Hands

I have my mom's hands. She loves to garden. I love to garden. She's much better at it than I am. She and my dad have a beautiful home on the lake where she spends much of her time outdoors, and if not out in the yard, she is sewing or quilting. I love her.

Off went my fake nails. I'd rather garden in bare hands thank you. I can't believe I still get those nails. I don't like them, but they do look very nice and my husband likes the french nail look. Oh well.

These hands have been in dirt, poo poo and dishwater today. They sure are getting old. Fifty two in a half years old, they are. I have old looking hands - I get that from my father's side. But I'm proud of them - they allow me to do a lot of things...like my mom - gardening is stress-free to us. We both love colorful flowers and planting them makes us happy.

I love my front yard. We live on the corner of a busy small downtown street. When I'm outside working, nearby walkers comment on how our yard looks so pretty. I'm very grateful. My husband or Benito keeps the grass mowed. I love the sound of a mower and the smell of fresh cut grass, don't you?

These garden hands of mine wants to do so much more, but the ole back won't let them. I can only bend up and down so much in one day. I hate that. I hurt my back about 10 years ago and it just seems to get worse each year. Brody wears me out too!

Thank God for my husband. He helps with Brody and cooks all of our meals. Man, I'm lucky. Cooking is not my favorite thing to do...I'd rather be gardening ~~~

I'm still waiting for my beautiful yellow Lantanas to pop up. You know, they aren't considered a perennial, but in Texas they are, and they will come back up. But waiting for them to do so is the pits. I so want to plant something in their place, but I must have patience. They will flourish my flower bed in about a month or so, maybe longer. I don't think I will do this again, I'll want something different in my flower beds next year.

Oh, these garden hands, how tired they are tonight. But...what would I do without them?

Protein Health Bars - Eat Healthy!

I would not hesitate in a moment's notice to try something that comes from Mother Nature...would you? Being healthy and full of energy has got to be the best feeling in this world... wouldn't you agree? Pure Fitness Nutrition has sent me three of their best selling meal replacement bars to try and to give my honest opinion about each of them. I will be totally honest here.

All three of them are (were - they are gone now...eaten up!) a very generous in size - definitely can be eaten as a meal. I'd say couple one of these bars with a huge glass of water and you've got yourself a nice healthy lunch. They have a great price point. 6-Pack $18.99 ($3.17 ea.) and 12-Pack $29.99 ($2.50 ea.) Not sure what the shipping is on a box as I did not order any...(yet).

Facts about all three bars: All Natural Ingredients, 25g Protein, Gluten-Free, Naturally Sweet, No Trans Fat, No Preservatives, Net Wt. 3.7 oz.

Dark Chocolate Cranberry - Doubly Delicious! My favorite out of the three. I'm raving about this one. It was very tasty, had a nutty texture, and the chocolate was plentiful...just how I like it. The dark chocolate was not tart at all...very satisfying. This bar contains raw oats, whey isolate, dried cranberries (not too many - just right), almonds, chia seeds (which are fabulous for you), cinnamon, agave nectar, natural honey, (no real sugar here), natural peanut butter, sea salt (111mg), cocoa powder, and xanthan gum. Calories 391.

Peanut Butter Jelly Crunch - This bar was not my favorite, as a matter of fact, it wasn't good. I was disappointed in this one because the name of it had me thinking it was going to be awesome, but for me, it wasn't. There was no peanut butter taste...actually there was no taste at all...too bland. Unfortunately this bar did not come with a nutritional label, so I can not give out the specific ingredients used.

Banana Chocolate Nut - This one was very tasty. Tasted more peanut butter that the one above. Had ample amounts of chocolate chips and was really great tasting! This bar includes great ingredients too - raw oats, whey isolate, chia seeds, chopped walnuts, chocolate chips, dried banana, hemp seed milk, agave nectar, natural honey, natural peanut butter, sea salt (80mg), xanthan gum. Calories 365.

My over-all opinion is that these nutritional bars are great with awesome ingredients. Gluten-Free is the best thing - when I saw that I was sold. It's so hard to find foods that are GF and that are good. Hand down, the Dark Chocolate Cranberry is my favorite and I will be buying a full box of these. Great to put in the freezer and very convenient to grab and go!!

Surprise! It’s A Supersize Menopause Meltdown!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned after having both my kids in my 40’s—and as founder of AChildAfter40.com—motherhood after 40 is anything but a supersize helping of endocrinal bliss. In fact, just when your cheeks are fat-full of the chicken-fried-steak-style diet of childrearing—and you’re all set to choke on the next bite—Mother Nature pops up and says “Would you like fries with that?”

And what’s that supposed to mean?

It means that, about the time your 4-year-old throws himself down on the floor of Macy’s in a full-throttle Bam-Bam meltdown—his vocal chords ripping out a Led Zepplin guitar solo—your perimenopausal adrenals begin exploding on top of your kidneys like fireworks on Independence Day.

Then you begin to feel like hell.

Menopause Means Adrenals Work Harder
Why? Because during perimenopause, your adrenal glands start picking up some of the slack for producing progesterone, and supporting estrogen, as your ovaries begin winding down. With encroaching hormonal shifts, your internal tolerance of other people (including children), noise, and other irritating external stimulants is hitting an all-time low. Add the external stress of the unrelenting demands of toddlers and young children and your adrenals end up getting whacked from the inside and out.

Yet, countless mothers over 40 still demur and say: “But I’m not menopausal! I’m in my mid-40’s or early 50’s and I still have my period!”

And I say: “But you are, darling. You are!”

The cessation of menses is only the destination—for most, the journey of perimenopause and menopause is a process that takes about 5 to 10 years, where “the change” occurs in gradations. I’d be lying if I said there weren’t days when I want to get down on the floor and join my kid in the Joy of Meltdown.

A Way Out of Midlife Motherhood Madness
But, within every midlife motherhood moment of madness, lies the seed of a cure. That’s how I ended up writing Midlife Momotov Cocktail–a series of remedies for menopause and motherhood after 40.

I also went to the Over-40 Mom Squad—AChildAfter40.com’s expert moms who’ve walked the talk by having kids after 40—for some advice on handling hellacious hormones (or lack of them).

According to naturopath, Dr. Priscilla Natanson: “The irregular hours and constant work of having a baby or toddler can be stressful on your adrenal glands”. How Can You Control Hormone Fluctuations?
“Keeping your blood sugar balanced will help you deal with stress and will make your menopausal transition more comfortable,” she adds. “High sugar foods will increase the symptoms of menopause and will also cause your blood sugar to crash after the high, dramatically increasing your stress and decreasing your tolerance for noise and kids.” Dr. Natanson suggests eating small, frequent meals with healthy protein, good fats and complex carbs, supplemented with good quality fish oils.

Most importantly, she says, “Taking time for yourself is critical—you can’t be expected to care for everyone else if you don’t have some self care too.”
