Family Rules!!

Making "rules" fun may seem like an oxymoron, but this project has given our Family Rules a positive spin. Every rule created is in a positive form, which I feel helps raise positive kids and having them displayed in such a beautiful way is not only a great accessory to the decor but also an amazing reminder of how we should act on a daily basis....not just for the kids but for mom and dad too!!


Our Family Rules!

For quite awhile I have been itching to create this project. I first spotted it over at Pleated Poppy where I believe the original project began. There are a ton of versions out there and if you really like this project and would like to give it a try, I encourage you to check out the links that can be found at Pebbles & Poppys as well for inspiration. I will give an overview of the project but for more detailed instructions go here.

The supplies needed are:

Canvas-mine was 24x36
Craft Paint(to paint the edges of the canvas)-I mixed brown and black to make the perfect chocolate brown
Mod Podge
Sponge Brushes(to apply paint and mod podge)-I used about 5-6 brushes for the whole project
Scrapbook Paper in various colours and patterns(you will need to pieces for each row)-I found the lighter the colours and smaller the patterns the easier it was to read
Marker(for writing the rules)-mine was a dual end so I had a fine tip as well as a larger tip
Scalloped Scissors or tearing ruler
Standard Ruler(or you can eye ball it)

Here is a quick overview of the instructions:

Paint the canvas edges

Write your "Rules" and cut your paper into strips

begin lining up your papers and title

podge the canvas and then add paper adding a coat of podge on top of each strip of paper

let dry completely and then add 2-3 more coats of podge, drying about 1/2 hour between each coat

Hang completed project on the wall

Interestingly enough, after we hung the "Family Rules" on the wall, my husband had this brilliant idea to paint the wall. It needed to be painted anyway, as there were holes from a baby gate that had hung there at the top of the stairs, however we had none of the original wall colour left, so my husband came up with the idea to paint the wall the same colour as our bathroom, so it would now be a feature wall. I have to say, the choice was fabulous and the canvas looks so much better on the bluey coloured wall.

Titus 2'sday: Dare to Love....regardless!!

Have you every really read Titus 2...not just verses 3-5, which pertain to women?? Let me share some of this chapter with you!!

¹ You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. ² Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
³ Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. ⁴ Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, ⁵ to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
⁶ Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. ⁷ In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness ⁸ and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Interestingly enough, surrounding the verses on how women are to live according to God, there are verses on how the men are to live, according to Him, as well. I am not going to go on a man bashing rant....that is not what this is about at all. As a matter a fact, it is totally the opposite. I know for a long time it was hard for me to wrap my head around living according to Titus 2, but God got a hold of me and has slowly changed my view of how I, as a wife and mother, am to live. See, the challenging part about these verses isn't to follow through ONLY if my husband (and children) are living accordingly but rather to live these verses daily REGARDLESS. I am, as a wife and mom, to love them, be self-controlled (tough one sometimes) and pure, be busy at home, to be kind and to be subject to my husband....yes submit to my husband, even if I don't think he deserves it....why? because this is what God has called me to do!! Can you say "Epic Fail"? Yup that's me...I have a hard time not holding grudges, stepping out of the way, so my husband can be the head of the house, being self controlled or even kind but this is God's idea of marriage and how marriage should work. It is perfect and although I am not perfect, I need to strive for a better marriage, to be a better spouse, a better mom, a better friend, a better woman!! So, with all that in mind, I am now in the process of working on the very first part of verse 4 and I am doing the "Love Dare", from the movie "FireProof", working on loving my husband more. Our marriage is great but this book is teaching me how to love my husband deeper and showing him that love with respect as well as helping me work on things like being more giving, willing and selfless...no matter what his mood is, no matter what kind of day either one of us is having. This is a tough thing for a strong willed, independent, head strong and sometimes selfish woman to do and thank goodness I have God on my side helping me through this, breaking down my walls of selfishness and using my strong will for the positive!! We may never have a perfect marriage, but I will strive for the best marriage possible, through Him and with Him!!

Refocusing!

I began this blog just over a year ago...excited about sharing my journey towards a Titus 2 life, a life that I knew I was being led to follow. I was focused on living a strong God-centered life and growing in Him as served my family. Don't get me wrong, I am still on this path, but somewhere over the last year I lost focus. I wasn't sure why at first...maybe the move to the new house, my new career, spending more time with family and friends, longer days which meant less sleep....but NO! this wasn't it at all. I have found that in the last few months, I am actually spending less time with God! I have a special spot in my home, my Prayer Closet, a bench by the window, where I spend my first 1/2 hour or so of my mornings with a coffee and read: a book, devotion, or the Bible and pray! A GIFT [God, Imagination (I prefer Inspiration), Focus, Thanksgiving] quoted by FlyLady. It truly is the best way to start the day...but I have not been doing that lately and I feel a difference. I feel less focus during the day, I have less patience, less energy, all around my day does not run as smooth. I have come to realize, something I always knew but have not always applied, that to have a God-centered day/life, I need to begin it with Him, EVERY DAY!!

Our church has a great Motto for this year....based on a verse in Colossians....

ELEVATE!

....the meaning of this word is simple:

To move (something) to a higher place or position from a lower one; lift
To increase the amplitude, intensity, or volume of.
To promote to a higher rank.
To raise to a higher moral, cultural, or intellectual level.
To lift the spirits of; elate.

so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
Colossians 1:10

Boy, that makes it pretty clear!! To grow in the knowledge of God, I need to spend time with Him which in turn will show me how to live a life worthy and pleasing to Him. With that said, I am going to begin this challenge of elevating my spiritual life.....DAILY! Will you join me?

Work or Play!?!?!

I wanted to share with you the reason why I don't blog very often anymore. I am now a WAHMommy and I absolutely love it!! I love spending my days at home with my children as well as providing a "Home Away From Home" for other children. It was quite a feat to get the basement finished in time for the opening of Ms. Kerri's Home ChildCare but with the dedication of my wonderful husband and the help of many friends and family who actually had experience in the many trades needed, we accomplished what I think is a fantastic environment to ~~work~~ play!! Our complete basement is the home of the child care facility during the week and on weekends is well used by our kids and sometimes a few extras....just because we love having friends over!!

The basement had great space and for the most part just needed some personality added....which I think we accomplished! The hands of our friends and family aided in completing an unfinished laundry/storage room into a finished kitchenette and laundry as well as paint and a complete playground in the backyard. Here are a few of the pictures.

I have to say, it really is a great environment to spend the day!! The colour is fun, cheerful and inviting!! It is a lot of fun being able to PLAY for a living!!! House To Home Transformation

As promised!!! In August, I mentioned that we were going to be concentrating on our basement, the home for Ms. Kerri's Home ChildCare, which is exactly what we did...however we did do a little work on the main floor to personalize the space. I do have to say that the previous home owners had similar taste in style, so there wasn't too much to do. Our living room stayed exactly the same colour and for the most part, we even set up our furniture in a similar fashion.

The kitchen and bathroom were the only two rooms that we painted on the main floor and I have to say this was a dramatic change. I am not afraid of colour and these rooms show it!! The previous owners loved green...or at least this is how it appears. The kitchen from a sage green in the kitchen to a deep red...

...with red highlights...BUT...

The kitchen was very pretty in green...

...the heart of the home!!

...and the bathroom went from a softer sage green to a deep aqua blue colour. We changed the mirror from the standard bathroom mirror to this cream coloured framed mirror that was my husband's grandpa's. I think it adds the perfect touch!!

We have been settled in for a few months now and have really enjoyed entertaining both in the warmer months and even the cooler ones, especially Christmas time. Not only has entertaining around the holidays become easier with the extra space but the decorating has been fun too!! Here is my final picture...from our first of many Christmas'...and yes! the decorations and wrapping paper all match my decor!!! It really was quite fun to decorate, not that it looked like this for long...LOL!!

How Time Flies! and What Next?

I cannot believe that it has been almost 5 months since my last blog. Where did the time go? I really didn't mean to take that much time away. I can say that I have been very busy with Ms. Kerri's Home ChildCare and I am loving every minute of it!! It is so wonderful to be able to be home with my younger children, just as I was able to be when my older ones were little and to be able to create a "Home Away From Home" for other children as well. If you would like to take a closer look at what I have been up to, you can check out my website for Ms. Kerri's here. I will also do a few blogs in the little bit, to update you on the transformation of the home....which is where I left off in August, with my last blog. As for the direction of this blog....I am not quite sure what God has planned for that. I am praying about it and we will see where it goes. I would like to continue with some of the memes I was working on last year and then incorporate a little more "me". I think last year I really played it safe in terms of sharing just how God was working in me and through me and I know He has big plans...there is a line in a song from Brandon Heath which says, "He's not finished with me yet!" and boy, is that the truth and thank goodness too!! I love the saying, "God loves me just the way I am, but He loves me too much to leave me that way!" With that being said, I am looking forward to this upcoming year and sharing it with all of you!!

A new journey begins...

It has begun....the process of making a house a home (and business). The painting and construction is under way and we will be busy for the next two weeks. We have decided to make the basement our priority, however I do have some painting on the main floor to do as well. I will be painting our kitchen red....I know what some of you are thinking...."is she nuts?" Well let me tell you...I have always wanted a red kitchen and many years ago I attempted it, but it never stuck. This time around, I have the full support of my husband and the dishes to match. It will be a deep red that supposedly entices the appetite, which I am hoping improves my desire to cook. I already love to eat and I am a good cook when I choose to, but I am hoping this colour will help me to increase the desire to be in the kitchen. It can't hurt anyway. The other rooms we need to paint on the main floor are the bathroom and maybe one wall in Bubba's and Boo's room (that is still debatable). Eventually we would like to paint out all of the doors and trim too, but like I said, the basement is our priority!!

As for the basement, we are finishing the laundry room, which will entail building out two walls, so studs, drywall, taping and painting. Also flooring, and ceiling tile. We also need to run 220 wire so we can hook up a stove as well. The layout is done and we will be adding cupboards, counter tops and shelves. The goal is to have a fully functional kitchenette/laundry room which will be used for my home child care centre. The entire basement will house this new endeavor and I am so excited about it!! I am the lucky one who gets to paint out the "Play Room", which I am so looking forward to doing. I have picked out predominately three colours for a mural which will span across three walls. I will post finished pictures when I am done....maybe even before and during pics too!!

Before I head off to go and "get dirty"...I just want to say thanks to all of you who have been praying for us. Many of you know how long a journey this has been and how God has been "testing" our patience and trust in Him....but He is always faithful and good, when God closes a door, He always opens a window...in His time!! Also, thank you to all of you who have stepped up to help us with this move, either by donating supplies, craftsmanship and/or time. God bless you all....be back soon!!

Yes, moving day! It is fast approaching!! Today is exactly 1 month from the day we get the keys to our new home!! We are so excited about this move and all the changes it means for our family. There is so much to do and what seems like so little time....so I will be taking some time away while my family and I get everything prepared for the move and my new business endeavor. God has blessed us in so many ways and we are looking forward to the plans He has for us!! I will be back as soon as I can!! God Bless you all!!

Thankful Thursday

It's been a few weeks since posting a Thankful Thursday....not because I am not thankful but because I have been extremely busy with everything going on in our family right now. We have been truly blessed and have much to be thankful for. Here is a short list of some of the things I am thankful for (not necessarily in order of importance).

Friends...who often pray for us and are always willing to give a lending hand when needed.
Family...who are always so loving and giving, no matter how close or far away they are.
Children....who make me smile, laugh and love a little deeper.
Career change....allowing me to be able to be home for my family.
Husband...who is supportive of me and this new endeavor.
God...who has given us these blessings and people in my life!!!

Tuesday Tunes: Give Me Your Eyes

I am joining Chrissy today in her love for music. After reading her blog this morning, I was challenged with how I "look" to others. Most everyone I know and hang around are aware that I am a Christian, but do they "see" that on a daily basis....I'm not sure and because I doubt the answer is yes, I can probably guess that more than likely the answer is NO! Chrissy's song choice today was one that talked about being the Body of Christ..."if we are the body, why is His love not showing them there is a way?" A fantastic Casting Crowns song that challenges us to be His hands and feet....to show love to all, not just the people we choose. Following that theme, I have chose a Brandon Heath song to share with you! This song was given to me from God as an answer to prayer a couple of years ago. I was involved in a youth centre our church had opened and was asked to participate in a higher capacity, to become one of the leaders...a little out of my comfort zone. As a matter a fact, I was about to give my notice when I was asked to step up and so with much prayer, this song was my answer....listen carefully to the words. Motivational Monday: The Promise Ribbon!

Faithful Bloggers is hosting its first ever writing project. The topic is chosen for those who choose to participate. Psalm 23 was the chosen topic and those that join in are to select a verse and write a post explaining what that verse means to them. It can be as long or as short as you want. It can be a personal testimony, a devotional, or Bible study in nature. It can be a photo that you believe describes the verse.

As I ponder this passage, I am drawn to the last verse. What a promise from God....that goodness and love will be with me always, even in the tough times, the down times and of course the times of praise and celebration and when my life here on earth is done, I will dwell with Him....FOREVER!! This promise reminds me of the promise to Noah and the symbol of the rainbow. I took this picture from my backyard patio door which overlooks a large park. The rainbow always makes me think of the love of God and all His promises.

Thankful Thursday

It always amazing me how God works!! As many of you know, Ryan and I were looking at buying a home back in March/April. We really wanted to move to a town about 20 minutes from where we live now. Ryan's mom, sister and nieces and grandparents all live there and we really love the small town feel. We had two different houses we liked and were unable to purchase either . One due to timing and the other due to some difficulties with the financing. Although we had a 'pre-approved' mortgage set up, the final decision was made against us. We were told, "although you have great credit, you haven't been establishing it long enough...come back in 6-9 months" and so we were prepared to wait until next spring.

I always enjoyed searching through the paper and internet at houses in the area that may be in our price range, and searched regularly until March/April. One Saturday morning about 2 weeks ago now, I picked up the real estate section, something I hadn't done for a month or two and something caught my eye. It was a well worded ad that offered an affordable mortgage, with an open house the next day. Ryan and I went to look....not really sure why, but it led us to another open house just around the corner from us, held by the same real estate agents. I have been planning on opening a home child care centre in my home and have had the plans in motion for where we are now. But this home has a great basement with it's own entrance, bathroom and extra bedroom. and a place to build a small kitchenette...perfect for childcare!!

This was it....and we weren't really sure how it was going to come together. Some would say this is all a coincidence....we say it is the hand of God!! Although we knew there may be some financing issues, the real estate agent asked us to give it a shot, worst case scenario, we still have to wait another 6 months or so. So we prayed about it, filled in all of our paper work and within one week, we were approved, inspection done and passed with flying colours and we closed the deal last night!! We are now home owners and take possession on Friday, August 13th. Ms. Kerri's Home ChildCare will open shortly after in September!! God is Good....all the time and for that, I am thankful!!

Back in April, At The Well had their "Spring Giveaway" and I was one of the lucky winners!! Part of my gift was a gift certificate from [ReDeemed], hand crafted by Noel Giger. I chose a custom designed serving tray with the theme of 'trust', something that God has been working on with me this year!! I was also given a bonus pendant and chain which has music notes on it....perfect, as I absolutely love music!! I am so happy with the finished product and I urge anyone that is looking for a unique, hand crafted gift for a special someone, to check out Noel's website. You won't be disappointed, Noel is a very talented artist.

Noel, my serving tray is everything I asked for and so much more. I absolutely love it and will be finding a perfect place for it in my home!!! Thank you so much!! The pendant is beautiful as well and I will be wearing it often!!

Thankful Thursday

Even when things are not ~~perfect~~ running as smoothly as I would like, there is always something to be thankful for. This past couple of weeks has been a tough one around this house but there are still things to be thankful for. Here is my list this week:

I am thankful that "Buddy" is feeling better after coming down with tonsilitis.
I am thankful that I was able to purchase a cheap car for my hubby that he loves.
I am thankful that I have been able to enjoy the last 2 days, home with my family.
I am thankful for "Doll" who came over yesterday to look after the little ones so I could go to worship practice.
I am thankful that things are coming together for my upcoming career change-home childcare-so I can be home with my family all the time!!
I am thankful that we were able to spend the weekend with my brother and his wife....it really was a great time to catch up.
I am thankful that "The Lord's Messengers" music ministry touched so many lives and that I was able to be a part of it and share my testimony.
I am thankful for the power of prayer.
I am thankful for the love of family and friends.
I am thankful for laughter and tears....emotions that bind and bond us together.

Motivational Monday: Jeremiah 29:11

I am pretty sure that I have shared this verse before, but it is such a strong reminder of how God is constantly working in our lives...even when things don't always look so good in our eyes. This past couple of weeks my family and I have been dealing with a ton of 'stuff'. Some of this 'stuff' has brought me to tears, pulled at my heart strings, left a rock in the pit of my stomach, sent me to my knees in prayer, left me feeling helpless and weak in the situation because I can not control it or fix it, but amongst all of this there has been some great 'stuff' going on as well. The not so good 'stuff' is still there but I know that God has a plan and will be there with me as I go through it, making me stronger. ..."For when I am weak, then I am strong." I just love it when God has a plan....sometimes we struggle with the little picture of things because we don't see His big picture, but we need to step out in faith, knowing that He will not harm us...that doesn't mean we won't go through hardships and struggles, but we will always have Him on our side as we are strengthened by the 'stuff'. God bless you all as you are strengthened by the 'stuff' in your lives!!

Tuesday Tunes: What Do I Know of Holy?

What a great day to return to blogging...I am able to join up with Chrissy for Tuesday Tunes!! This is one of my favorite memes to participate in, because music is such a big part of my life. Music to me is a chance to express emotions and thoughts...who I am and what I am going through. I chose a song this week that speaks of who God is and how much I still don't know. I can't believe how quickly this last week has gone by!! I am thankful for each and every day I have, but here are the reasons why!!

I am thankful to have such wonderful children, even when there are trying times, I am thankful that I have each one of them.
I am thankful for a wonderful husband who helps take care of this home....working opposite shifts is tough but this little gesture from him makes it a lot easier.
I am thankful for friends, who cheer me up when I am having a rough day!
I am thankful that I have the day off today and can spend it outdoors with the little ones.
I am thankful for the sunshine that sparks cheerfulness and laughter.
I am thankful for sunscreen that allows my porcelain children to play outdoors during this wonderful weather.
I am thankful for being able to spend time with my brother and sister in law on the weekend, it was so good to catch up.
I am thankful for the time during the car drive to reconnect with my hubby, although it started out a little rough that morning, it was a wonderful day!
I am thankful for having the chance to sleep in a little this morning, it is always nice to get an extra 1/2 hour!!
I am thankful that I will be able to spend the evening at home to participate in bed time prayers!
