October is one of our favorite months of the year because we have the opportunity to support such an important cause. Last year we begin a campaign to give 5% of all our sales to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to support the research that will one day find a cure for breast cancer. Our campaign was such a huge success last year that we wanted to make it an annually event. We not only want to help bring breast cancer awareness, but also honor those survivors of breast cancer and raise funds for the continued research for those still battling. Doing our part and being a part of something that is bigger than ourselves is so gratifying. Every little bit counts toward a cure to save other lives and end breast cancer forever!

We moms know that giving birth is no easy feat. Although the end result will be a beautiful baby boy or girl, the process is extremely painful, it can take several hours, and you can definitely rip a nail or two. While some expecting mothers may wish that they could pass the birthing responsibilities to their hubby, the gift of life can only be provided by a woman. This is why so many husbands are turning to materialistic offerings to show appreciation for their wives' strong will and efforts during the birthing process.

These offerings, which are dubbed as "push gifts," are exactly what the name suggests—they are gifts given to a mother following the birth of her child. And as explained on Good Morning America the gifts can get rather lavish and expensive, especially with celebrity mothers. For example, singer Mariah Carey received a $12,000 pink diamond and sapphire necklace engraved with her twins' names, Moroccan and Monroe, from husband Nick Cannon; Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe received a $250,000 Neil Lane 10-carat diamond ring from husband Rodger Berman; and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez received not only a $300,000 canary diamond ring from husband Marc Anthony, but also $2.5 million set of custom-made earrings engraved with the initials of the couple’s twins, Max and Emme.

Non-celebrity fathers are known to splurge on posh push gifts too—some gifts have included awarding their wives with new cars, booking first-family vacation trips to exotic places, and of course showering their wives with diamond rings. But can only high-end push gifts truly demonstrate how much a husband "appreciates" his wife for giving birth? No, not at all. Or at least it shouldn't. In fact, it's probably not a good idea that your hubby go splurging on ridiculously lavish and expensive diamond earrings anyway when you have a child on the way—all those baby diapers add up. But while some husbands may argue that your new bundle of joy can be seen as a gift-in itself (which is true) and thus they shouldn't have to get their wives anything extra, that's not to say that a small, meaningful token couldn't be seen as an extremely sweet gesture.

How to Throw an Eco-Friendly Baby Shower

If there’s one reason to treat the planet with consideration, it’s for the generation after us that we already pamper. Loving our planet is synonymous with loving our children, so what better way to celebrate a new life and growing family than with an eco-friendly baby shower? Throwing an eco-friendly baby shower doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. In fact, if you know what you’re getting into, you can actually save more money than if you were to go the traditional paper plates and table glitter route. A green baby shower can be trendy and responsible, and those are ideals we’d love to see in any growing child.

Say no to paper. That includes paper towels, paper napkins, paper plates, and the like. Even recycled ones still go in the trash (since nothing that’s touched oil from food can be recycled again). Instead, stick with cloth napkins and ceramic dishes, silverware, and drinking glasses. Use your own or drop by the thrift store and pick up a set for cheap.
Saying no to paper includes wrapping paper. There are infinitely cuter ways to wrap your gift than with dead trees that will never see the light of day again. Try using a baby blanket, a cloth diaper and reusable diaper pin, or a reusable fabric bag. They all become part of the gift. Also, the Japanese have a tradition of carrying little bags or wrapping gifts in beautifully printed fabric called kinchaku or furoshiki. Try the trend out yourself.
Nix the guestbook. Instead, have guests use a non-toxic fabric pen to sign an organic cotton onesie. You can frame it or the baby can wear it.
Think natural and functional. Decorate with those two key words in mind. Instead of balloons and streamers that will just get thrown out during clean-up, decorate doorways with a clothesline and pin baby clothes, toys, and pictures to it. For place settings, check out the farmers’ market for locally grown wheatgrass and flowers. Ready a plantable card for each guest and have everyone plant theirs in your garden when the party draws to a close. When the baby is a year old, flowers should be blooming!
Serve local, organic food. Stick around the farmers’ market for your food, as well. Check out recipes online for what’s in season and select from the market accordingly. Alternatively, you can ask the farmers themselves for ideas (they generally love to talk about their products). At most farmers’ markets, you’ll find organic produce, organic meats, organic flowers, and even organic wine, so you’ll be set.

We have been flooded with emails in the past month asking when some of our out of stock items will be available again. Because of the down economy, this past year has truly tested small clothing businesses and unfortunately some have been forced to close down. One of our most favorite designers, Dragon Tail Baby, contacted us just before the end of 2010 to advise us that they would no longer be offering their cute baby clothes. Dragon Tail Baby was known for their elegant, yet comfortable and practical baby kimonos. All moms know that choosing the right stroller is essential for transporting baby with ease. The perfect stroller will make a mom’s job easy, while the wrong stroller will only cause frustration and inconvenience. We’ve all seen those moms in the parking lot, kicking and practically beating their stroller to the ground to get the stroller to fold the right way. Here are a few tips on picking the best stroller for you, so that you do not become that mom.

Safety First: Above anything else, a safe baby stroller is a must. Don’t be afraid to take strollers out for a test drive in the store. Are the harnesses supportive and comfortable? Are the harnesses right for your baby – i.e. will your baby start to slip if the ride gets too bumpy? Also, check to see if the structure of the stroller is strong and supportive. Is the stroller easy to tip over? Can the stroller remain standing when you hang your purse and diaper bag on it? Let’s be real here – your bags are heavy, and after a few minutes of lugging around baby, your overstuffed purse, and that diaper bag that has a funky smell coming from it, you are going to want to throw your bags in the stroller or on the stroller’s handles. Therefore, it is very important to find the stroller that can carry extra weight.
