Three Summer Birthday Party Ideas!

Summer is rapidly approaching, and if you've got a kiddo with a birthday in the summer months, it can sometimes be a challenge to come up with fresh ideas. For much of the country, summer is meant to be spent outdoors – you have to take advantage when you can, right? Check out these three fun backyard party ideas you can throw this summer.

• Water party. Don’t have a pool in your backyard? No problem. You can still turn your backyard into a waterpark for the day. Just flip on your sprinklers and let the kiddos run rampant in their bathing suits. For even more fun, set up a slip-and-slide – the kids will love it! Also, supervise a water gun battle and watch the party go from great to amazing. Regarding food, get creative and incorporate a beach theme, including fresh fruit, Hawaiian punch, and hot dogs cut to look like an octopus. Send home favor packages that include personalized metal prints, a plastic beach bucket, a shovel, and inflatable beach ball.

• Carnival party. It’s always a party when a carnival’s involved! Create “booths” in your backyard by covering folding tables with tablecloths or sheets. Then make signs with each game’s name on it (e.g., Beanbag Toss, Pin Knockdown). Ask older siblings or parents of the party guests to run the booths and let kids play as many rounds as they’d like. And what would a carnival be without hot dogs, corndogs, and deep-fried Twinkies? Get more carnival party ideas here.

• Mexican fiesta. Nothing says summer heat like a fiesta. Find the perfect colorful birthday cards and invites to send out to your child’s friends and prepare for a blast of a party! Hang red, yellow, and green streamers and use bright tablecloths to create a festive mood. Set up a nacho or taco bar with fun toppings like olives, green onions, salsa, guacamole, cheese, and more. The highlight of the party is – of course – a piñata filled with candy. Let the kids take turns whacking the piñata with a bat and be sure the video camera is taping when it finally busts open and everyone scrambles for a treat!

Whatever theme you choose, take the opportunity that summer affords and throw a party in your own backyard. Your child will forever remember the fun and all the effort you put in will be well worth their smiles.

Hawaiian SPAMBURGER® Hamburger! (Yes I said SPAMBURGER®!)

It really is a classic food. Introduced in 1937, it was even shipped abroad for the troops (more than 100 million pounds!) during WWII! Lately it seems to have been pushed aside. I have to admit, I wasn't a fan myself until Hormel sent me the new Spam Teriyaki! The can displays a SPAM® sushi. That was my original plan. Until I seen this recipe on Spam.com and decided to try it instead!

I'm a sucker for anything with Pineapples and decided this was the best way to try SPAM® again. Plus its easy.. and that's an important factor in my house!

SPAM® Sushi! Who Knew?

What you need..

1 12-ounce can SPAM® Classic (I used Spam Teriyaki!)

1 (8-ounce) can pineapple slices in juice

1/4 cup creamy mustard blend

1 clove garlic, chopped

4 slices green bell pepper, if desired

4 hamburger buns, split

4 leaves lettuce

4 slices Swiss cheese, if desired

Make it..

Prepare grill.

Cut SPAM® into 4 slices.

Grill SPAM® , pineapple and bell pepper, turning once, 5 to 7 minutes or until heated thoroughly.

In bowl, stir together mustard blend and garlic; spread on cut sides of buns. Fill each bun with lettuce, SPAM® , pineapple, bell pepper and cheese.

Easy Steak Enchiladas

This is a great, simple recipe that can be altered to fit anyone's taste! My version is basic because I have extremely picky children lol. I plan to try it again and add onions, peppers, and black olives. Let me know how your version turns out.

What you need..

cooking spray
2 cups cooked & sliced steak
-- I broiled the steak after marinating it in LA VICTORIA® Taco Sauce
2 cups LA VICTORIA® Enchilada Sauce
2 cups of shredded Cheese (Chedder or Mexican Blend)
20 flour or corn Chi Chi's Tortillas

Make it..

Preheat Oven to 350 degrees f
Spray a 9*9 baking dish with cooking spray
Lightly brown Tortillas in a skillet
Spoon approx. 1 cup of LA VICTORIA® Enchilada Sauce in bottom of baking dish
Tightly roll tortillas filling them with steak, cheese, and any other ingredients you want
Place filled tortillas in baking dish
Cover with Remaining sauce
Top with Remaining cheese
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until Bubbly

If you have read any of my book reviews, you probably know that I am a self proclaimed "Book Snob." I'm picky about what books I agree to review because of this. I read A LOT and hold everything I read to a high standard.

When I first received Kinetic I was a little worried. I'm not much on the Supernatural Genre. The summary and awesome cover art grabbed me though and I decided to give it a try.

Not far into this book I realized "Supernatural" doesn't fully describe Kinetic. It could easily fit into Mystery (my Favorite!), Romance, Suspense, and a few more. I was immediately sucked in by the story line.

I don't want to give away the plot or any spoilers.. I Highly Recommend reading it for yourself! I actually read it twice, something I only do with Books that I REALLY enjoy. Ones that read smoothly and really hold my attention. Kinetic is one of those books. =)

Plenty of Twists and Turns with Characters that feel real. And the great news is Its just the beginning of a series! I can't wait to see where S. Katherine Anthony takes the characters next! I just hope the next one comes soon!

As a labor and delivery nurse I am truly passionate about the process of

childbirth. So much so, that I started a website named Birth with Balance

for mothers to share their birth stories in order to heal, teach and empower

one another through first hand experience. At work I love the excitement

of first meeting mothers, helping them navigate their options during labor,

and holding their hand when pushing their little ones into the world. I can’t

help but cry when I see them bond with their child after they have worked

so hard. The intensity and harmony that accompanies childbirth is a place

where both children and stories are born. I created Birth with Balance to tell

each of these unique stories.

I found that after birth the mother’s story is often lost and so are the

decisions she made. The book, What to Expect When You are Expecting

doesn't always cut it or prepare you for the realities of birth! Am I right? So

many of my patients enter the hospital without any real knowledge of what

to expect. Others check in to deliver with a specific plan and cling to this

even when things do not unfold as hoped. Some births are traumatic, and the

let down can be devastating, and others are euphoric. Each powerful story

helps women prepare for birth, reflect and learn from one another.

There are no other forums that focus solely on birth stories, offer a

questionnaire to help women write, or gather stories from around the world.

Birth with Balance is a safe place for mothers to remember, reflect, heal

from a trauma, contribute their wisdom, role model, empower, and offer

alternative birthing options. We aim to build collective knowledge on

childbirth and empower expecting and experienced mothers around the

world.

Easy MEATLOAF made w/ Salsa!

My favorite way to make Meatloaf! I actually think the recipe comes from a Weight Watchers cookbook, but my aunt taught it to me and I have tweaked it a little.

Its so easy & even my Picky boys love it!

I'm going to give you the basic recipe w/ a footnote of the extras I add =)

What you need..

(usually makes around 6 servings but easy to expand)

1 lb. Hamburger meat (I like to use 75/25)

1/2 cup CHI-CHI’S® salsa (I use mild, but go as spicy as you like)

1/2 (or more if you prefer) tube of Saltine crackers - crushed

1/3 (or more if you prefer) cup of Ketchup - plus a little extra for the top

1 egg lightly beaten

salt and/or pepper to taste

Make it..

Preheat oven to 350 f

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl

Transfer to a loaf pan (I usually use a 9*9 cake pan because the kids like theirs flat lol)

Drizzle with Ketchup

Bake 45 minutes to an hour, until the Internal temp is at least 160 f

My add-ins:

I like to chop a small onion and soak a piece of bread in milk (something my granny taught me) and add to the mix.

Home Made Buffalo Wing Sauce

The Super Bowl will be here soon! The Guys in my house LOVE Buffalo Wings & this is the perfect sauce for them. Warning- Its a little on the spicy side. =) You can add or subtract BÚFALO® Chipotle Hot Sauce to your preference just don't omit it completely. It has a wonderful taste and gives the sauce the kick it needs.

What You Need..

1 to 2 tsp BÚFALO® Chipotle Hot Sauce
1/2 c red wine vinegar
1 tbs new mexico Chili powder
1 tbs Dijon mustard
1/2 c unsalted butter (cut in Fourths)
1 to 2 tbs honey
1 tsp salt

Make It..

Put the Vinegar, BÚFALO® Chipotle Hot Sauce, & Chili Powder in a Sauce pan and Bring to a Simmer over medium Heat.

Remove Mixture from Heat. Whisk in the Dijon Mustard, Honey, Salt, & Butter.

Pour on Chicken Wings or Dip Them! Enjoy!

Peanut Butter White Chocolate Fudge ~Only 3 Ingredients!~

I think this is the Easiest Fudge recipe that I have ever seen. Need a Gift for the Holidays? This would be great in a nice little tin, with tissue paper. Or even in Holiday Saran Wrap (I Hate Saran Wrap though lol) I'm making this right now =) so more pictures to come.

What you Need..

1 package (12-ounce) white chocolate chips
1 c. SKIPPY® Creamy Peanut Butter
1 c. coarsely chopped walnuts, toasted, if desired
Melted chocolate (optional)

Make It..

Line 8x8 pan with aluminum foil
Coat well with cooking spray.
In 2-quart microwave-safe bowl, microwave white chocolate chips and peanut butter on high 1 minute or until melted; stir until smooth.
Stir in walnuts.
Spread into pan.
Refrigerate fudge 2 hours or until firm. Cut into 1-inch squares.
Drizzle with melted chocolate (optional).

Makes 64 Servings!

I thought it would be a good idea to give a quick tutorial on how to enter the majority of Giveaways on my site. I have gotten some feedback that a few readers are a little intimidated by rafflecopter.

Some Info:

Any info given will ONLY be used to contact you if you win.
All winners are chosen by random.org.
Most entries are simple "follows" on social media for the sponsors.
You can not win if you Don't Enter!
Every condition is spelled out. There are NO catches.

I don't know about you, but I like instructions that include pictures. So went through the motions with a current giveaway (Snowman Door Hanger Giveaway from Kute Kuntry Kreations) & took some screenshots.

If you find the Giveaway on MNAB's Facebook page, it may be posted with a picture. In the picture's description there will be a link. The links look a little funny because I shorten them. It will still take you to MommyNeedsABreak.org. All you need to do is Click it!

Have you ever seen A Christmas Story? If you haven't then you might not understand this giveaway. Although, I'd put money on the fact that the greater population has seen it. It's become a holiday tradition to watch it at least once a year with the family. It's total innocent comedy.

A group of bloggers and myself ran across this lamp and thought it would make the perfect fun giveaway for the holidays! We made it happen and we're giving it away to one lucky winner.

HOMEMADE EASY APPLE PIE RECIPE

A tasty and easy classic apple pie.

Ingredients..

1 box refrigerated pie crust (softened as directed on box)

1 tablespoon butter

6 cups peeled, thinly sliced apples (about 6 medium apples)

1 cup of sugar (a little more or less depending on your preference)

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

3/4- 1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Preparation..

Preheat oven to 450°F. Place 1 pie crust in a 9" ungreased, glass pie pan. Push crust against side and bottom of pan.

In a large bowl, mix remaining ingredients except butter. Make sure to coat the apple slices as evenly as possible. Spoon mixture into crust-lined pie plate. Chunk butter into several pieces and lay on top of filling.

<optional> I always unroll the top crust and cut out (use different cookie cutters) four 1" slits or shapes. Or you can cut the top crust into lines (I use a pizza cutter) and "lattice" the top crust.

Top with the second crust (anyway you choose.) Mash the edges of the crusts together and flute with a fork. Cut off excess crust.

<optional> I like to take a small egg and beat it with 1- 1 1/2 tablespoons of water, then brush on top crust and edges. Then I sprinkle a little sugar on top of that. It makes the top crust a little more brown and sweeter.

Bake..

Bake for 40-45 minutes. Or until apples are tender and the crust is a golden brown. Cover the edges of the crust with strips of foil after 15 or 20 minutes to prevent excess browning. Let cool 2 hours on cooling rack and serve.

I took the leftover crust and put a food colored, green star on top.

Hormel Pizza Dip Recipe & LunchMeat GIVEAWAY!

It's Football Season Folks! This recipe is perfect for it too. I love pizza, but I get a little sick of it. This is a great, creamy alternative.

What you need..

1 ½ c. pizza sauce

1 (3.5-ounce) pack of HORMEL Pepperoni Minis (these are o good in Salads too!)

1 (8-ounce) pack of cream cheese

⅔ c. ricotta cheese

⅔ c. grated Parmesan cheese

½ tsp dried oregano leaves

1 c. shredded pizza cheese (mozzarella or pizza blend)

Breadsticks

Make it..

Heat pizza sauce on medium-high heat for 5 to 7 minutes, until sauce is thickened. Stir occasionally then set aside.

Pre Heat oven to 375°F. Grease 8-inch square baking dish.

Cook pepperoni minis over medium-high heat for 5 minutes or until lightly browned. Drain excess grease on a paper towel.

Mix cream cheese, ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese and oregano in a med bowl. Spread into then bottom of greased dish.

Spread pizza sauce evenly over cheese mixture then top with pepperoni minis and pizza cheese.

Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbling. Serve with bread sticks.

I wish I had taken photos, but it was such a hectic day and the kids were ready to eat it as soon as it came out of the oven! I love easy recipes!
