The Oldest Family Run Business in the World

Businesses are often able to garner attention just for having been around a long time. The words “Established in ….” are often proudly displayed directly under a company’s name on many signs. The older the business, the more trustworthy it must be. After all, how could anything not great exist for so long? A particular mystique is added when it is an old, family run business where one can imagine the pride and knowledge of a company being passed down through a single family, from generation to generation. This brings us to the Hoshi Ryokan, a Japanese Inn that, amazingly, opened its doors over 1300 years ago and claims the title as the oldest family owned business in the world.

Divine Origins

The Hoshi Ryokan is much more than merely a very old hotel. Even its beginnings are steeped in legend. The story of the Inn’s opening begins in 717 with Taicho Daishi, a great teacher ofBuddhism who had climbed Mount Hakusan for the purpose of meditation. Legend has it that after rigorous spiritual exercises, the guardian deity of Mount Hakusan appeared to the monk in a dream. Taicho Daishi was told of an unknown, underground hot spring with curative powers in the village of Awazu. Taicho was commanded by the deity to uncover the hot spring so that the people may heal themselves in its waters. Once discovered, Taicho ordered his disciple, Garyo Hoshi, to build a spa on the site and to run it for posterity thus beginning the Inn’s long history.

Modern Times

Throughout the centuries the Hoshi Ryokan has expanded to one hundred rooms, accommodating up to 450 guests, but still maintains much of its original look. It is run by the 46th generation of the Hoshi family. The hot spring is still a popular destination with many still believing in its curative powers. Comfort and healing remain important themes to the Inn as guests are clothed in traditional kimonos and treated to a Japanese tea ceremony upon arriving. Some of the other amenities to be enjoyed by the modern visitor include a theatre, traditional rooms each named to represent a season, and fine dining. As the region is renowned for its fine food products, the Inn boasts of simple and pure preparations of dishes to preserve the wonderful inherit tastes.

The New Record Holder

Surprisingly, it was only in the past decade that the Hoshi Ryokan took the crown as the world’s oldest family run business. The previous title holder was Kongo Gumi, a Japanese construction company run by consecutive generations of the Kongo family dating back to 578. However, the company fell on hard financial times and was absorbed by a larger corporation in 2006.

In an era where technology is constantly evolving and people are always looking for the next new thing, there is some comfort in knowing that change is not always constant. For nearly 1300 years the Hoshi Ryokan has greeted guests and kept its history alive into the modern days.

It was always curious to me how people write interesting articles on various topics. What a large scope of imagination should they have! Any topic may be discussed, even that boring computer components or any other social media. It is really not that difficult to make a masterpiece of your own if you have a subject, actually. Still, how should you write an article if you can’t even find a topic to discuss?

Imagine a tabula rasa in front of you that must be filled up with your ideas.

The most difficult, as for me, is to choose the subject. I can give you some tips.

First of all, listen to what people around you talk about, but not look only for information that interests you.
News is one of the main sources to get the information for your article. So, pay attention to the news.
There are also so many interesting things that happen around us. Just devote some your attention to them and you will understand how many interesting topics you can pick out from that.
Our experience is our main source of information, so look through all the “data” you have in your head. Believe me, some crazy things you will find there, for sure!

What is more, you have to capture attention of your reader, so you have to know what interests him. Yes, here you will certainly need imagination and your talent to think and analyze.

What articles to people read as a rule? Those that are not very large, concrete, with short sentences, and what is really important, big attention is given to the structure of the article. Yes, it is true. The reader likes to read that piece of information that is easily comprehended by him. The visual image of the article will tell much about it, and it is the moment when the reader decides whether he will read it or not.

What to do to make your reader read your article?

Titles and the marked lists will be of a great benefit to your reader. Imagine yourself reading such an article; it is really easier to read, and far more interesting, isn’t it? Even Small Companies Benefit From Target Setting and Performance Monitoring

When you ask a CEO or COO or even a CFO of a larger company about setting defined targets and monitoring performance with numbers, they will tell you that they would not be able to live without it. To them this is how they: control, understand, communicate and manage operations. Ask the same of a small company owner and in most cases he or she will tell you that they do not need them. They will tell you that they “already know everything there is to know about their business and setting targets will only tell them what they already know, that they need to sell more”.

It is true that most small company owners will know everything about their own business, at least from a numbers perspective. So is there any value add in having number based performance monitoring and targets for a small business? (the so called Key Performance Indicators, KPIs) I believe there is and I am looking at it from three distinct perspectives.

Psychological
The human brain is wired for competition. We always strive to be better than everyone else, to be “top dog”. This is especially true for C level executives. These guys have a drive to be better, more powerful, have higher positions than others. Their whole life is built around obtaining that goal. They use numbers to evaluate their position: how good are their sales? How much profit they have made? How effective are their initiatives compared to competition? Even though they most likely know all of this they will still look at those numbers and use them to drive their own behaviour in a certain direction. Interestingly successful business owners are not that much different. They too like competition and thrive off it. They set themselves goals and achieve them. So would it not make sense to use that competitive trait to their advantage?
Knowing the numbers is good but it does not create a sense of competition. Seeing them on paper is something completely different. The review and evaluation pushes one to face the operational reality as well as increases the will to improve on it. It is an introduction of direct competition, albeit with one self. This can motivate one far more than any other method, but in a discrete way.
Operational Insights
One of the great things about evaluating operational KPIs is seeing how numbers are connected. In a large corporation this chain of dependencies can span 10 or even 15 different indicators. Each number tells a story of some kind. However, a collection of numbers as seen in KPI reports paint a picture with text and arrows pointing to interesting aspects of the business. Seeing and understanding how these numbers affect each other and the bottom line leads often to interesting insights. It is the base for a successful Management System. Same goes for the small businesses.
Often the things that make the most difference to the revenue are something unexpected. If a small business is using 6 different channels to sell its products, understanding which one generates most sales is valuable. However, seeing how these change after an operational redesign gives some new and interesting insights. KPIs make the person viewing them think about how they were created. What made them good or bad. That is the start of a continuous improvement approach to business.
Good Habits
As a business grows, it becomes more and more difficult for one decision maker to have complete information and knowledge about the business. Decisions become more like a guessing game. Even if new staff are taken on to aid the company, they will not be able to have the complete information either. Large companies deal with this by creating KPIs, a defined way to evaluate and monitor operations. These are shared amongst the decision makers to give them a clear picture of current performance. In successful companies these numbers are discussed so that correct decision can be made. Doing the same in a small company creates a good practice of managing by numbers. It prepares the business for growth and helps to spread the decision burden as the business grows.

Using operational indicators does help. It makes the business owner and managers see things in a different light, to think and understand more. They should be used by all business owners, regardless of the size of the company. And the benefits, they will come sooner than you expect.

Thinking about blogging? Starting a new one? Or just wanting to switch platforms? Choosing the right blog platform can either have you on cloud nine or nursing a migraine. Do you choose one for ease of use, or one with more options to make your blog sing? I’ll go over the three major ones and list their pros and cons to help you decide.

WordPress

Looking for a community and lots of options for your blog? Then go with WordPress. You have two options – an online WordPress blog or a free self-hosted version. Users enjoy hundreds of different ways to present their blogs when it comes to visual design and usability, and a variety of ways to interact with others in the community to expand their knowledge (or just complain about trolls). Despite the crazy amount of ways to customize blog posts, WordPress is relatively easy to use for beginners.

On the negative side, those looking to just write and post will find that it may not be quite that easy. Having all the options tends to freeze some people up solid. If you hate ads, you might also be disappointed that WordPress – unless you install it on your own domain name – places ads on your blog that you have no control over.
