Individuality and Commitment in January - My art journal journey...& free image for your artwork and use...

So..... How did January evolve for you? For me, it went a little slow at the beginning, and too fast at the end. I talked in my last post about the theme for the year, and how I plan to focus on living the theme. I did begin the art journal for the challenge: 366 days. I have worked and worked on it- but, what I found with my efforts is that when I focus the entire month on one page (or little bits of) I do journal every day- but, I also keep adding and adding- I have literally reworked my front cover 3 times and painted over my January spread twice.

I finally completed my January spread on 1/31. I had so much written into it that it was difficult to read- and the page was very busy (I was getting headaches looking at it!). I had a lot of personal information (or secrets) I had written, which was very therapeutic throughout the month, but, not something I want just anyone to see.... So, it served a great purpose throughout the month as a journal or diary, it helped me resolve a lot of issues that crept up, and it gave me a little retreat each day. As for it resulting into a visual exploration? I don't think so. I did not experiment with a variety of mediums, there was no true focal points, the colors were all over the place, and my mark making was literally that- marks.

I was not creating "art"- at least not in a visual aspect- it was more of an artistic release through words and streams of emotions put into ink.

So, what to do with it now? Hmmmm......
As January wrapped up, I decided to lightly paint over the page spread- you can still see some of the former writing- but, not enough to make the writing cohesive. It was symbolic, actually. I spent all of the month writing out and describing the innermost feelings- and now I can put those away. It is a fresh start. Those feelings have created a foundation from which to build and move forward. For February, I now have a 2 page spread that I can experiment and play on when I am in the mood (My former January page)- and I can continue to journal my thoughts and feelings throughout the new month on my calendar page.

I really feel like I learned from this experiment, and I came up with a way to use it functionally. I started January with a theme of individuality, and I think I achieved that by using my journal in a way that is needed for me. I also chose to commit, and I feel that I did that. I diligently wrote in my journal and I did something with it every day. I am going to continue with "individuality" and "commit" throughout February, but I am also adding two new concepts: Organize and Routine. Let's just see where that takes me....

This is called "Cowgill"- I have used thisone recently and adjusted the lighting and colors to create a background paper for a project- I went with sheer colors in brighter blues and purples - I will show that piece off later.... What can you come up with? I would love to see .....

At years end... Focus for the year to come and Free Image to Use in Your Art!!!

So, here we are on the verge of another new year.... How are you feeling about that? Did you complete many of the things you had hoped? Can you reflect with pride over the past year, feeling accomplished and achieved? How would you describe this past year? If I could label my past year, 2011, it would be titled, Transition. I feel like I wore many hats, each evolving into the next.

In my professionial arena, I made choices that I thought were the best at the time, only to find out later that they were not the correct path, but that crooked path took me to another - and it was there that I found I was where I was supposed to be.
In my personal and family life I learned and grew as a mother- and in that evolution, I found how to put more into my marriage- and to find my role within my family. The one big revelation I found was that when I compare our life to the Waltons and the Brady Bunches of the world, I feel incompetent- but, when I accept that our family has it's own unique characteristics, and the obstacles we encounter aren't a result of bad parenting, but an opportunity to excel at parenting, then I can see my family in a new light- and appreciate the funky, weird dilemmas we encounter and recognize it as just who we are-
and finally, as a creative soul with significant ADHD, I have tried so many techniques and materials in the past year- spent hours to days on projects, only to find that I really didn't "feel" it- then I walked away from the project feeling disappointed, talentless, and a failure- I spent several months in the past year in a slump- doubting my abilities and wondering if I was wasting my time- As the year has passed, I have read a lot of blogs, articles, etc. and found that I am not alone in my self criticism- in fact, most creative explorers encounter these slumps - and so I started tolook at it differently. Instead of accepting defeat when I try a new technique, new method, new material, new angle to something- I am now trying to acknowledge it as time well spent exploring a process to determine if it fits with my preferences and talents- if it does, - Fantastic! If it doesn't, - well, thats a lesson learned, and now I know not to go that route again. I realize that if I had not tried it, I would have kept wondering if I could, and would have eventually tried it anyway- so, I can just chalk it up as something that is not for me, and move on....

So, I consider the past year as transition for me- learning to accept and enjoy myself, my abilities, and my life- to not get bogged down with comparing myself, my life, and my work to what is stereotypically considered the "norm"- and to acknowledge my skills, abilities, and creative preferences-

Now, what will this next year bring? I am not sure, but I decided to coin the year, Identity and set goals to make the year reflect the label, through expression. My goal is to express myself as myself- meaning, to put my personal characteristics in everything I do- not conform, but express my own thoughts, opinions, and personality in all aspects of my life! I am also adding Completion as a secondary guide word for my year- I often start a project, then I get off track with it- and when I recognize that it is not what I had intended, I just put it aside for later. I need to let go of the original vision, and modify the new creation- and Complete it. I have so many unfinished projects, and when I reflect on them, I realize that they have potential for being amazing, but not as the original version- instead as the new creation that is emerging. With completion guiding me, I intend to focus on using the collection of odds, ends, pieces, and parts that has compiled over the past few years- in fact, I have made a committment to ONLY use items I have on hand- this will help me de-clutter, and save money towards my family resolution of sticking within a budget.

So, that is how I intend to guide my year.... as a means to implement these resultions, I am going to try to create or share a tutorial, pattern, or recipe for one of the creations. So, look forward to 52 entries this coming year -

Inspired Book Arts- journaling, binding, altered books and more....

So, I am becoming infatuated with journaling and creative scrapbooks/ albums, art books, altered books, etc. I am beyond infatuated, really, and bordering on obsessed. My problem is that I always get stumped when it comes to actually Journaling in the book- I love creating the covers, the backgrounds on the pages, themes, etc. but, I just can't develop a good page- I don't know what to write about or what to express in my pages- I have spent a little time each day exploring some awesome art book artists (say that five times fast! Whew!!?*) And I have been inspired- so, I wanted to share that spark with you-

Textures with textiles in New Scarves and Accessories at Mommy Tyme Gifts!

Have you ever reached a point in which you feel that you have explored every angle of your art? That you have nothing new to add to your art? Find yourself descending into boredom with your work? I have been in that slump for the past two months. For as long as I can remember, there has not been a day that has passed in which I did not have either a hook in hand, been hypnotized by the hum of my sewing machine, or spread out a mixture of beads and baubles in front of me with a wire spool on my wrist.... at least that has been my routine until the past few months- Bam! out of nowhere came a blank board in the place my creative thoughts once were... If you have found yourself in that same place then you know how depressing it is. I felt completely listless- directionless- absent. What does one do when they find themselves in this slump?

First I scanned the web trying to find something that would throw a spark at me and maybe I could fan the flame. The spark did not come in the manner I expected, instead it came in an entirely new aspect of the creative process. I happened to stumble upon a few incredibly interesting blog that showcased art journals and altered books. I have dabbled a little with a journal or two, but can never get "into" the process- In retrospect, I think maybe I wasn't "ready". I have adhered to a very specific method of creating. I normally come across the trigger, maybe a skein of great yarn, a cool pendant, a great bead... and then I build around that ingredient. I spend a lot of my free time reading books and articles by talented artists who share their techniques. I have historically focused on the technique instead of the process of inspiration.

Well, I wasn't creating anyway, so why not open myself to a new method? I can not stress to you enough how amazingly freeing and invigorating it is to create carelessly! To let each item, scrap, piece, word, thread, etc. lead to the next- and how exciting it is to look at the completed page and wonder to yourself, "how did I end up here when I started there?" I have had so much fun with this- In fact, I am in a non stop creative state.... I can not seem to walk away from the journals once I start them. Every little trinket or scrap I come across throughout my day puts me into an anxious frenzy until I get home and can explore how it can be added- what meaning this little item can add to my page- or how this unique tidbit can take the page into an entirely new direction. This has been a journey, and each encounter gives me a new adventure. I am not "journaling" every day with my thoughts or feelings- I am not keeping within a true theme throughout the pages- instead I have been letting each page determine the idea for the next page- but, that is what is so cool about this process, there are no rules- there are not specific procedures- you can do whatever your creativity leads you to do....

And this desperately sought after spark has led to a bon fire! One of my pages focused on tree's, leaves, and my love of hiking the woods near our family rents a cabin each fall- This page opened up some gorgeous color mixtures for me and reminded me of the many different textures and layers that we encounter on our long walks in the thick woods- A blend of wines, burgundy, sage's, green's, tans, honey, browns, and more- the mixture of plants and growth made me think of blending multiple stitches and fabrics in my crochet work-

Here is what I have developed..... A mix of varied fabrics, including organza- a blend of fibers such as eyelash yarn in a sage and brown blend- these were all crocheted into a scarf utilizing 4 variations of stitches. Once I thought I was done, I realized it still needed that "pop" so I embellished the entire scarf in the scraps from the fabric strips- it is full, soft, and allows for a unique textural adventure!

Bringing Life Back to Your Old Purse- Altering a purse to make it NEW again!

So, it's been a few weeks since I have posted and I have been feeling slightly overwhelmed with all the projects I have started, but have not finished.... I recently started a new job (well, actually, returned to an old job that I had about 5 years ago... however, it is a very time consuming, all encompassing type work- I have returned as the Administrator for several small residential facilities for adults with developmental disabilities). This is very consuming because there is always something happening, someone needing my time, a project or proposal that needs completed- etc. It is very busy, but it is the work I love, so I am very grateful to be back with this company! However, with the time I have devoted to work, it cuts back in the time I have for other areas- and I have a very active six year old who is waiting at the door when I come home. I find that I am not getting to my projects until 11pm or so, and by 1am I am exhausted- I am sure you all can related in one way or another to this dilemma.... I have managed to finish a few of my smaller projects, though! And I am anxious to post a little about these- I just finished altering a purse, and I have been pretty happy with how it turned out! This was my FAVORITE purse- I bought it from By Your Side on ETsy a few years ago- it is that perfect purse for everyday. It had great color, enough room, easy to carry, and went with just everything... I have used this purse more than any other I have. Needless to say-, when a black ink pen exploded in my purse a month ago, I was devastated! I tried every home remedy for removing ink that I could find from hairspray to rubbing alcohol- NOTHING worked! I was unable to bring myself to toss it out! Then it hit me- why not try to alter it a little and see if I can cover up that ink blot?

So, here is how it turned out after some gesso, acrylic paint and textile medium, some transfer techniques, and fun embellishment! It's perfect for carrying all my day to day things, it is sealed with Matte Gel (so no worries with busted ink pens and melted lipsticks!)and if it gets dirty- just wipe and clean! What do you think?

I thought I would make a tutorial and post it on this process- maybe you can bring some of those outdated, worn bags back to life this season?

A Cream and gray, open stitch, flattering for any size summer to fall sweater from Mommy Tyme

Well, after a slow start, and a lot of delays, I finally finished this cap sleeved cardigan I have been working on. I purchased a pattern from Hectanooga at Etsy, and then did a little modifying here and there to create this piece.... It's created with a basic acrylic blend fiber in this great cream color with just hints of a pale gray throughout and flecked randomly with a stray black fiber or two. It was such an eye catching yarn I wanted to create something really fashionable with it and I was pretty pleased with the outcome. And here is what I have been working on lately.... An altered book that turned into a purse... I decided to focus myself on creating for the purpose of creating with this piece instead of attempting to direct my work towards a visualized end result, and the outcome was fantastic (I think). I had so much fun with this project and the processes involved actually engulfed me. I had a difficult time waiting for stages to dry, as I was so involved with the techniques and methods while working on this. I did not set out with an expectation of what I would create, instead I just let myself create without pressure or stress. What I started with was a Readers Digest hardback condensed book, and I new I wanted to take a stab at trying to alter it- but, I did not intend on creating a purse. Mishaps became blessings in the process and when one avenue did not work, I just allowed the work to head down a different path. I did photograph each of the steps and plan to make a tutorial in the upcoming week. I hope you like this as much as I do. I used the butterflies on the front to symbolize the flight and freedom of the project, and the bicycle represented moving forward on the path. The purse has a fabric lining and the entire exterior has been lacquered to preserve the design elements. A mixed medly of techniques and applications were used including collage, image transfers, sewing, painting, stamping and embossing (to name a few).

A new, open stitched, olive, wine and cream cardigan from Mommy Tyme!

Mixed media jewelry- Fabric and fiber cuff embellished with wire and glass

Well, long time no write... For those of you who check in often, I apologize for my absence- it has been a hectic time in my life but I think we are finally beginning to reach smoother ground- and although I have not been writing, I have been creating (my escape)! Lately I have been imagining some really elaborate jewelry designs, but the technical composition needed to make them work is eluding me! Frustrating! So, I have been scouring the blogs and trying to earn some new skills that may help me pull some of these designs together- I know that I want to add my crochet passion into the design, but pulling it all together without a mix mash mess look is still the hurdle to jump! But, in my attempts, I have come up with a few new designs and pieces that I am pretty happy with! Below is my new cuff- and I have made a few more, each with individual embellishments, so the end result is unique! What is fun with these is the mix of fibers and textiles- I have had so much fun rummaging through my stash of material, fiber scraps and odds n ends- I think I am actually learning to spin these into a unique fiber that will become the foundation for some future projects (if I had a wheel or spindle, it sure would make it easier since I am currently using a knitting needle for the process!!)- anyway, here is a fun example of one of the cuff's. This one is made with a felt backing, a mix of wire, rayon blend fabric, ribbon, an amber glass focal that I created a wire crochet bezel for- and it is pulled together with a silver colored chunky chain and hook clasp to make it completely adjustable.

PS - we just got back from an awesome trip to the Southern Missouri woods, where we rented a cabin with a private pond and just spent some time enjoying our family, quiet, and nature... I wanted to share some of these with you, also!

Creating New pieces from old Supplies- collage, jewelry, crochet and more this week.....

Well.. I am sure everyone is anxious to hear how my sabbatical from shopping for supplies has been going. It has been a struggle- I did not realize how much time I spend just walking the aisles of Joann fabrics or Hobby Lobby. I think it is a way for me to calm, relax, and at other times it is a way for me to get inspired. I have really missed spending my Saturday mornings doing this. But, I have snuck over to my favorite vendor's shops a few times over the past few weeks, but I did not take anything to the cashier. I will admit, there was one day that I grabbed a basket to carry and had it close to full when I realized, "what am I doing?". I spent another thirty minutes returning all the items back to their places on the shelves. And, of course, the past few weeks, some of my favorite shops have finally stocked some art stamps (which I have desperately been seeking); resin (another item I have not been able to find in the shops); and some cool new molds for polymer clay! I have held strong and not purchased any of these items (even though I have been waiting months for these items to be stocked! Bummer,right?)

the reason I decided to take this sabbatical from making purchases is multi purpose- First, I really have been trying to get my family on a set budget, which allows us to put some money into savings for those inevitable "rainy days". I also would like to eventually have some cushion in our bank accounts to invest, and hopefully ensure a stable future for our family (if you watch the economic outlook on CNN or MSNBC, you know how scary the future is looking!) The second reason is because I have collected and hoarded a MASS of items/supplies. I have promised my husband, nothing more comes in until some things go out- I have a 12' X 9' room to work in, and I also have to share this space with my husband's computer and desk. Unfortunately, he does not find my "clutter" or "artsy mess" to be a sign of genius. He finds it to be a MESS. I know where everything is, but how do you possibly explain that to your spouse? Finally, I wanted to spark some new creativity. My shop's staple products are bath and body items, and I love to create unique products with organic ingredients and essential oils. This led to a path of discovery as I attempted to find new and fanciful ways to package my items. I have always been addicted to crochet and have spent endless hours with hook in hand. But, until I began my exploration and marketing of my shop I had never really exploited my other creative arms. Once I started branching out to other areas, I became obsessed with every technique, material, etc. I could find. I have tried a little of everything but have stuck with fiber arts including my new passion of art quilting, mixed media jewelry, and needlework. Well, I had hoped that by using only the supplies on hand, it would force me to think of new methods, obscure means, and original ideas for these outlets.

So, the past few weeks, I have learned a few things- and I learn more everyday... here are just a few concepts to hang on to....

One thing I have realized is that when you are trying to "create ways to create" you have to carry a journal! I have so many ideas popping in my head to use up this scrap or another hank of yarn, that if I do not keep a journal handy to write it down it will be replaced by the next idea that pops in! So, a journal is an ABSOLUTE must! I have also amassed a TON of scrapbook papers and cardstock. I do love making cards and I previously enjoyed scrapbooking. I have found that you can incorporate paper into just about everything you do- also, there are tons of FREE resources out there if you are unsure on how to do a specific technique. Recently, I pulled out my sewing machine and was desperate to make a fabric landscape background- but, I just struggled with how to put the small slivers with the larger pieces of fabric to create the look I wanted. Quilting ARTS TV was the answer! It is an awesome resource, jam packed with tutorials on each episode- and it is free! In my area, the show is literally on every single day, so I just set the DVR and found the episode which introduced me to fusible webbing! there are also tons of resources on the web. Oh, and don't forget your local library. I have actually replaced some of my former "browsing at the stores time" with browsing the aisles of the library! So, if you have a unique idea but the technicalities are hanging you up, don't struggle and waste time, just look to the experts out there.

And, now on to a few items I have created the past two weeks- it is an eclectic mix of items. As you can see, I am totally ADHD and I move from one project to a completely different project- The trick is to always make sure you go back to the first project and finish it up! If you get stuck on an idea or how to finish something off, move to a new idea- don't waste time with "block". A day or two later, the answer will come to you and get you back on track with that first project, or it may take you in a new direction with the project you have started! So, here they are......

This is another "crochet wire beaded bead", but I used a standard crochet stitch in a round to create the focal bead. The other new twist is that the bead is more of a bell and starts narrow at the top, flaring out as it elongates. I then tied a variety of ribbons and beaded crochet chains to the inside of the bell to hang from the focal. This has ribbons and chain to create the cord. I wire wrapped different aspects of this necklace. I am not thrilled with the photo as my mannequin was not dressed in an outfit to really show this off- so, look for a better shot of this one in the future.

Finally, here is a canvas I just finished. I did some fun background techniques with this. I painted with acrylics, followed by collaging on some book pages, scrapbook papers, and vintage advertisements. I then did a thin wash of acrylic, followed by a few layers of acrylic that I painted on and wiped off "here and there". I applied crackle paint around the edges and about 2" of the border. Then I decoupaged a variety of floral napkins around three of the edges, embellished an edge with lace, and added my focal collage piece.

Update from the Strike Zone:

As you all may have read, I am taking a shopping break (for supplies, anyway)! Wow, this is a lot harder than I thought... I really did not realize how often I run over to Joanne Fabrics for a spool of thread, or just a small box of seed beads because I don't have the color I want for a project- I am definitely learning about my budget this week! Anyway, I have got to find space in my crafting area or I am going to be engulfed, so the only reasonable way to do this, is to bring nothing new in UNTIL a Lot has gone out! So, I have started some really fun new projects....Here is a taste of what I will be showing you in the next few weeks:
1. Paper fabric purses and bags- these are so much fun to make! I have only gotten one done, but it is cool-
2. a cool new "cage" look crochet stitch with wire. I started with a new stitch I learned from a YouTube video, but increased it a little and used wire- I have some big ideas for this! I can't wait to show you
3 some new fiber, bead and wire jewelry- necklaces with ribbons, lace and more!
Altered suitcase purse! This one is still in planning- but moving right along...

I am also going to give away a few new magazines! I actually found magazines in my stash that I had bought duplicates of- So, I have a brand new Stringing mag and brand new Quilt Art I will be giving away next weekend! Make sure to stop by....

Going on Strike to Save my Sanity!

Well, it looks like Spring has sprung, and with these past few sunny days and warm temperatures, I took the initiative to do some spring cleaning in my work room... Wow- how does one person collect so much in the few short months of winter? A three hour job turned into an entire weekend as I sorted through each drawer, box, cubby, etc. When I finally finished Sunday afternoon, I decided to kick back on the couch and watch a little tv while I worked on a new crochet pattern I have been anxious to start on. Obviously Karma, fate, or whatever you want to call it, had other ideas for me.. As I flipped through the channels' I found myself watching Hoarders-

Now, if you dabble in art of any form, ( especially those of you who, like me, are multi modal and work in as many mediums you can think of) - then you probably collect scraps, patterns, textiles, worn and torn everything's. Watching Hoarders can be pretty scary to someone like me, who has a mason jar full of bottle caps, 8 bottles of glue (in my defense they are all different "kinds" of glue), 2 totes of yarn and 1 tote of yarn scraps, etc. etc.etc. I saw my future as I watched the latest episode- imagining climbing through my living room packed with spools of wire, an Economy size Coffee can of crochet hooks, tupperware bowls and jars packed with beads, scraps of newspapers, old magazines, crayons, watercolors, thread spools, canvas (well, you get the idea....).

So, how does one avoid falling down that slippery slide from 'Well Stocked Creative Being' to the 'Packrat sleeping on a bed made of yarn skeins and craft books'? Hmmm..... In my first step to recovery, I am going cold turkey (well, for the next 60 days anyway)- I am literally going on strike from making any supply purchases (sorry Joann Fabrics! I will miss you...) Instead of purchasing I am going to use something I have on hand- and if I don't have what I need, I am simply going to have to find another way to create it! So, not only am I saving space- saving money- I am also forcing myself to create differently. I am really looking forward to this adventure.... I am also looking forward to solving new creative dilemmas in a different direction! To get this started, I even pulled my sewing machine out of the closet. I had actually forgot about my machine because I haven't used it in so long, but as I did my spring cleaning I found several yard of this really cool denim fabric I bought a few years back. It sparked a memory of an old Singer and the fun we used to have...

So, I look forward to sharing with you the downsizing of my work area - and if you come along on this journey with me, you might find a great giveaway or two (I know at least two because I found that I have a few items I had not even opened, and I certainly can't remember what I needed these items for in the first place! So I am going to share these items with my visitors! Besides my wallet going on strike from the art and craft supply shops, I am also going to commit to posting at least one new item each week. Setting this deadline forces me to push through those periods of creative block or frustration from struggling to find solutions when something doesn't quite come out the way I imagined. A commitment to production ensure I have to work through it instead of giving up!

For today, though, i am showing off some earrings I made a few days ago. I created these by crocheting some simple wire rectangles, then I crocheted around the outside of the rectangle and did a simple 2 bead single crochet stitch in each stitch. What do you think?

Upcycle your curling ribbon to create these Fun, Flirty, Crochet Curling Ribbon Earrings

It's another Super Saturday and I am ready to Share some Stuff! (Say that 5 times fast!)

I recently found several rolls of curling ribbon that I had stashed in a drawer in my craft room. It seems that I am always buying curling ribbon to match the wrapping paper for gifts - so, I have several half and quarter rolls of these ribbons. I hate to throw them out, and I kept thinking... there has to be something different I could do with these... Well, it turns out curling ribbon is really easy to work with, especially crochet. So, that's what I did- and this is what I came up with:

And so, for those of you who would like to make a pair for yourself, here is the pattern....

You will need:

curling ribbon ( I usually purchase the rolls from Dollar General that are wound like a mini skein of yarn. For this size, it will take 3/4 of the skein to create both earrings - but, if you have the type that is wound on the cardboard spool it will take about 1/2 of a spool for both earrings)

Crochet hook (I use size H for a smaller, tighter stitch. You can play with it, though- use a larger hook for a loose, open stitch)

Pattern:

Make a slip knot with a loop just large enough for your hook to fit into. This is your starting point. Slip your hook into the loop.

Chain 6. Slip stitch into your first ch to form a circle.

Chain 1. Single crochet into the circle (Not into the ch stitch of the previous row but into the circle so your stitch is around the chains of the circle).

Single crochet into the circle 9 more times. Slip stitch into the first single crochet of this row.

Chain 3. Double crochet into the first single crochet of the previous row. **Double crochet twice into the next single crochet. Double crochet into the next single crochet.** Repeat all the way around the circle. Slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the first chain 3 of this row.

Pull ribbon through loop on hook and cut ribbon from spool. Pull the end until a tight knot is formed from going through the last loop that was on your hook. Hide your end by pulling it through random stitches. Cut close.

Open the loop on the earring hook finding. Attach to the ribbon circle just created. Close loop tightly and use your pliers to ensure the metal is pinched to keep the ribbon enclosed in the loop.

That's it! Enjoy!

Creative block! Pretty Packages! Finishing Ribbon, Wire, and Beaded Crochet Necklace! Mommy Tyme's week ....

Well, the weekend has approached already... I can't believe it! I have barely had time to accomplish any new items, but I have sketched out a couple of new ideas that I am anxious to get busy on! I also went through a period of self doubt,again, this past week. If you are even slightly like me, you are fascinated with the awesome works of others and always seeking inspiration or tips on how to improve your own work. Some days, though, it makes me feel very self conscious to check out other's works- I begin to doubt myself and then wonder "Am I out of my league trying to sell my items?". Have you been there before? So then I'll tuck my stuff away for a day, rarely two, and the bug bites me again. I start itching to work on something, to make something, to feel the fibers in my fingers or the metal in my hand. That is when I realize that it is not a choice, creativity is biological- I honestly believe that. It's not the creativity portion that is out of "league", but the skill with the technique I may currently be working on. Which leads to another problem with me- I can not accept defeat, ever. I can never say to myself, "ok- you just are not getting this- let's move on". That, unfortunately, has been want held up progress this week. I have been trying and trying to put together this collage I started almost a month ago. I have actually redone the background at least 3 times. The picture in my mind has evolved into a completely new theme, with new colors, and new texture- and I am still not happy with it. Have you been in this state of mind before? What do you do? Put it away for a week or two and wait for inspiration? Seek out some technical advice? Well, I have it sitting on my work table and every time I walk by, I stop, stare, and become frustrated that I can not find the magic "something" that will make it all come together! So, that is my week-

Oh, but one really great thing did happen- and I am so very, very, excited! I had one of my tutorials/pattern/how to's published at FaveCrafts (which is absolutely one of my favorite sites to visit!) And now onto what I have been working on (besides my collage piece)...

This is a wire crochet necklace with pink glass chips and a mix of white pearl like beads and silver accent beads. I have used two accent rings to attach the ribbon with a knot, then added a clasp later (not shown). I first made a wire beaded crochet length that was fairly narrow. Once I had it the length I wanted and the width I wanted, I threaded another piece of wire with beads in the pearl and silver. I went down the strip about 1.5" and would "squish" the piece together between my fingers so that it narrowed, then I wrapped the new length of beaded wire around that section 4-5 times,making sure the beads were on the section wrapped. I continued to do this down the entire piece so I had a length of beaded wire that wrapped at intervals the entire length of the original piece. This necklace is not done yet, I still want to add something to the "chain" (i.e. ribbon) and some charms to the silver rings that the ribbon is attached to. I am also debating on embellishing the actual center of the necklace.

Another activity I worked on this week is packaging- I really wanted to "revamp" the way my clothing and accessory items are packaged. My soap is easy to package in fun papers and ribbons, but shipping a big bulky shrug or caplet has been difficult for me to "pretty up". Below is a package I sent out this week- it had a cowl/scarf and with lots of "fluff and embellishment" along with a cowl with fringe - 2 very bulky items. So, this is what I did:

I wanted it to be fun to open, but it is almost impossible to find pretty boxes and shipping materials. I used a large box that a new pair of boots had come in at the beginning of winter. I stamped some pretty coordinating paper and glued it to the inside of the box lid (where a big black logo had been stamped from the boot company)- I lined the entire box with pink and white tissue paper. Then I wrapped each item individually in stamped tissue paper. I stamped the tissue paper with "thank you" and various birds, flowers, etc. in different colors. I wrapped each package with some fun fibers and then embellished them with some chipboard accents that coordinated with the pinks and whites. I also took an acrylic star ornament and applied gesso, let that dry, then using a paper towel applied some pink ink and paint, rubbed the paint and ink back, and then glazed it. Let it dry and tied it to one of the packages. Once I had it all arranged in the box, I added some of my cards, my coupons, a FREE bar of soap (most of the time I will give out sample size soaps, but this was a more costly order so I went with a free bar), and a handmade card from me telling the customer how much I appreciated their business.

Trying New Techniques in Crochet- Pink beaded ribbon and crochet wire earrings at MTG! Free pattern/tutorial for you to use!

Well,here is what I have accomplished thus far this week...

Pink beaded ribbon and wire crochet earrings- They are truly not too difficult to make, just a little awkward in managing the tension and holding the ribbon as you work. I actually became addicted to this new technique and have made several other pairs of earrings this week using a few types of ribbon, some with beads and some without, and differing shapes. I thought I would share the pattern I created with my visitors today- Bear with me as I am not that great at writing patterns...

Materials:
ribbon-these are created with a satin ribbon about 1/2" wide. To start with, though, I would use the thinnest ribbon you can (about a 1/8" width) so that it does not get so twisted and difficult to manage
thin wire for jewelry making
beads (use a bead you are comfortable with for your first project- and keep in mind if you are creating earrings- too big will be too heavy on the ears!) I used approximately 14 small white acrylic beads because they are so lightweight.
crochet hook - I used a size F

Let's get started!

1. String your small beads onto the wire, keeping the wire attached to the spool. Wrap the wire back onto the spool once you have the beads loaded.
2. Keeping the ribbon attached to the spool, grab your ribbon and the end of your wire and make a slip knot. Slide your hook in to make the first chain.
3. Holding both the wire and the ribbon together make a chain stitch. Next make a beaded chain stitch (to make a beaded chain stitch, slide the bead up to your work so that it is laying next to the hook, crochet the chain by grasping your ribbon/wire just past the bead and pulling through your loop. It is literally the same as making a regular chain but just utilizing the ribbon/wire from past the bead for the next stitch.
4. Make another chain stitch without the bead. Make another beaded chain stitch. You should have a chain of 4 stitches- 2 with beads and 2 without.
5. Slip stitch into your first chain to make a loop
6. Chain 1, then bead single crochet into the loop. To make the bead single crochet you are making a single crochet but pushing the bead up close to your hook first, then completely the single crochet so that the bead lies on the opposite side of your work when you complete the stitch. (a little more technical for those who may be feeling uncomfortable with the bead stitches: push the bead up close to your hook and keeping the bead in that position, take your hook and go into the center of the loop- NOT INTO A STITCH OF THE LOOP BUT IN THE CENTER OF THE LOOP, Yo, draw loop up and now you have your one loop with a bead and one without on your hook, yo and pull through both loops. Your bead should be sitting on the back of your work.)
7. Bead single crochet into your loop 4 more times. You now have 5 BSC around the loop.
8. Slip stich into the top of the first bsc to complete the round
9. chain 2 (counts as first dbc). This round we are doing the same thing as last round but making double crochet stitches and increasing. To make the bead double crochet stitch, push bead close to hook, yo, insert into stitch indicated, yo, pull through stitch, yo and pull through first two loops, yo, pull through last two loops (the last one has the bead) and your bead should be on the opposite side of your work. So, bead double crochet into the same stitch you did your chain 2 with to start this round. Bead double crochet into next stitch of the previous round. Double crochet into same stitch you just completed then bead double crochet chain into. Bead double crochet into next stitch, then double crochet into same chain. Continue until you go all the way around. You are basically stitching 2 double crochet into each stitch of the previous round- one with a bead and one without. Slip stitch to top of first dbc of this round. You should now have 10 stitches.
10. chain 1, then slip stitch around the entire piece.
11. Cut your ribbon and wire from your work leaving about a 4" tail. Tie off. Hide your wires and ribbon ends, cut close. You may want to put a dab of glue on the back side to hide the ribbon end.
12. Turn your work over so the beads are showing. Insert earring hooks through any of the last round of slip stitches. Make sure the hooks, when inserted, have the end of the hook facing to the wrong side (side without beads showing) so when worn the beaded side will be facing outward.

That's it! Questions? Piece of cake once you started, right?

As the weekend begins I thought I should get busy and post some of my finished items in my shop! So, I have started adding them to Etsy and Artfire, but I really wanted to show them off here, too! Plus, with all the linky party's going on this week (and wow! I saw a lot when I was browsing my favorite blogs this morning!) it might be fun to post a few on the blog so I can participate in the parties, too! I am leaving the links for all the parties I am participating in this week so you can join in the fun, too!

So, here is my new necklace which I decided to call Serenity- why? Because the hues of blue just calm. When I ran across this bead mix at Joann's fabric a few weeks ago something compelled me to buy them. Normally I go for the pearl shapes or strings- rarely a mix of beads in several bags. I just really loved the colors, and they seemed to emit tranquil moments to me. So.... here she is- beaded wire crochet with some silver charms and a macrame organza ribbon, wire, chain,etc. A mixed up mash of jewelry findings in one piece- what'ya think?

And, I finally took the time to add my "Green with Envy Earrings" to the shop! I had shown these when I was still finishing them up, but I had to change the fishhooks out so they would hang right and then I put a slip stitch around the entire circle to give a more "finished" look-

Getting to know your Followers...

Well, have you tried the LInky Love on Facebook? You post your links on someone's discussions tab, they then do the same to yours? Along the way, others who join the discussions follow others in the discussion? You get to see lots of others facebook fan pages and grow your Friends list? Cool idea, right? I have done it a few times, and found some pretty interesting facebook pages... But, I really enjoy reading blogs! I love reading what others are up to and keeping up with what they are working on, their inspirations, the drama of everyday life- not to mention, learning from tutorials and patterns. So, what if we tried linky love in the form of a blog? I thought it would be more of a "Get to know your followers" feature! Sometimes people start to follow one of my blogs, and I don't realize that someone new is here until weeks later. I thought that I would just randomly browse through the followers list each month and choose one of my followers, then explore their blog, explore any other links, and come back here to share it all with you... Sound good? I have found more interesting blogs by being led to one, checking their followers thumbnails or brief intro's, and then just clicking- forwarding to a new and unknown blog- it is like playing the lottery! You never know what you are going to get- something interesting (a jackpot!) or something that I am completely unfamiliar with (another jackpot!)- so, really it is a win! win! situation. Thus, I think the Getting to know your Followers feature will be a lot of fun! Anyone else doing something like this on their blogs? Participating in linky love? Doing any kind of exploration of new people who may be able to teach you something new? If so, share your ideas/ links and what you are doing here!

So, look for the new feature starting next week! It will be completely random- and of course, I will notify you (or ask permission) before posting any information here! The only real qualification is you have to be a follower! I might throw a giveaway or prizes in once in a while, too! Just for giggles and grins!

Now.... On to what I have been working on...

I just finished my mixed fiber poncho which also acts as a shawl, cowl, scarf, etc... Created from some fibers/yarns/mixes and one size fits all. There are strategically placed buttons, so you can wear it a ton of ways... It measures 70" X 19" so you have plenty of room to wrap it different ways!

Use Art to improve mental health and wellness....

A few months back I began to participate in Seed Buzz, which is a program that allows you to promote others' blogs by discussing similar topics and linking to the blogs that you want to promote on Seed Buzz. Well, unfortunately I had not had the opportunity to promote too many, as I struggled to connect to the posts that I browsed through. That was, until today... Today I read an amazing blog post on how crafting and creative time can help one cope with depression. It inspired me to write about this concept. The blog is awesome and so insightful. Sometimes hearing someone else's story, helps you better understand your own. You can read it at http://torontocloseknit.blogspot.com /2010/10/lisas-story.html Now, we have all seen the old black and white movie with Jack Nicholson, "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" and watched as the patients in the film did "arts and crafts" with Popsicle sticks. According to this 70's flick, arts and crafts, in any form, could be soothing to the soul. I think that hypothesis can be considered fact today. Art can help you find the inner peace that you may need at any given moment, it also gives you an opportunity to express yourself - your real self- without threat of repercussion. How often do you mull over the "things you should have said" in your last argument with your husband? How many times have you thought, "I wish he could know how that makes me feel?" We all have words or thoughts that are lost at the moment, but later we regret not having that final say. Art offers you that final say. You can put your feelings, your fear, your anger, whatever... out there for everyone to see. Art is subjective, so how someone else may interpert your work may be completely different than your intent.

As a student of psychology, and finally wrapping up my Masters in Child and Adolescent Development, I have had the priviledge to examine a multiple of theories on mental states, emotion, motivation, and behavior. One theme that is often the common thread in the area of psychology is the ability of one to perceive themselves as worthwhile and having purpose, being appreciated or needed, and finding a sense of content with who they are. Art can help you find your way down that long and winding road. Depression is one of the most misunderstood disorders, because again, the symptoms present in a subjective, very personalized manner to each individual who suffers from it. Journaling has long been recommended as a therapeutic activity for individuals suffering from depression. Art is similar to journaling in that what you create at any given moment reflects how you feel at that moment. Have you ever started a project on Monday, then resumed work on Thursday and the piece evolve into something completely different? That happens to me all the time.... But, the way I felt on Monday has also evolved into something completely different by Thursday-

Art can be extremely beneficial to someone experiencing situational depression due to a death of a loved one, a traumatic experience, et. It allows a personal reflection on the situation and an opportunity to express how you feel about that situation without the constraints you may normally feel bound to. When I first learned of my son's uniqueness, Asperger's syndrome, it was an internal grieving for me. I had to face the realization that he was not going to be the child that sits on my lap and hugs me (like most mommy's want), he was not going to be the outgoing, social, class president that I had envisioned. But, as a mother and as his advocate, I could never let that sadness show. Instead I had to positively spin it and always focus on the strengths such as his very advanced intelligence, his sense of order, his ability to see more in every literal interaction than I could even imagine. I also had no one to share the daily stress and apprehension I felt with every change that occurred.

Over Christmas when most families are having parties and spending time with family, I had to plan out every minute of the day. I had to ensure that we limited the time we had in small areas with large amounts of people, I had to foresee situations where there would be a lot of noise, I had to ensure that the routine we do every day could still be done, along with all the extras and additions the holidays bring. I became so overwhelmed that I would have to go into the bathroom and lock the door so I could take five minutes to cry- and then put the patient, big smile back on, and attempt to control the environment to avoid him becoming overwhelmed and stressed. Daily, I have to let words and frustrations roll off my back when I am confronted with someone unfamiliar with the syndrome. I have to let go of the anger I feel when someone says, "He is spoiled!", or when someone says, "I don't think any child should take medications. The doctors just push that on parents these days." I have to take a deep breath and just acknowledge that these people could not possibly understand my life, or his, and let it go. Some times it feels like a constant juggling act of balance between my full time job, my classes, my son, and my husband- with little or no time for me in there. That is how art saves me. Every single day.

I encourage- No, let me CHALLENGE, those who feel emotionally dominated to pick up a tool- any tool- and attempt expression of what they are experiencing. You can use a paintbrush, a needle and thread, a pair of scissors and bottle of glue- even a stick to draw in the sand.... but let yourself have your say. You do not need a degree in design, you don't need an arsenal of equipment- you merely need a few minutes of time to interact with your tool and substrate. Begin with the idea that your work is to document this moment in time, so you can later reflect- don't burden yourself with the idea that someone may see your work. Let the moment be an experience of liberation for those emotions you have tucked inside. You will be surprised how refreshed and renewed you feel.... Who knows? You may find that you love to work with your hands and be driven by a passion to pursue it further-

Here are a few of my recent works- As you can tell, I am all over the place... I love creating jewelry, I adore crochet and fun fibers, even crocheting wire and beads... And when I have a real story to tell... I work in mixed media on canvas or small re purposed items.
