Membership sites are built by providing access to specific information that consumers are in need of.   The function of membership sites offers a wide variety, I still remember the good ole “CD of the month” membership club that I was part of in High School and now I’m part of an online community focused purely on the creation and running of membership sites as well as other monthly fee based forums.

When I first started online I focused purely on “free membership areas and forums” but soon realized after joining my first “Elite” paid forum that the quality of members- that’s regular, helpful and “masterminding” members in a paid membership area, was well worth the small monthly fee because it provided so much more value. Many free forums and membership areas lack the commitment of participation and you never know who to trust or or who is just trying to scam the system.

I’ve also learned the value of providing a membership area to customers and clients, this is truly how so many people earn “passive” income  online. Just think of the math- if you can provide ongoing value to your customers or clients and charge a small (or large depending on what you are offering them) month after month that number will continue to grow.

Successful sites provide convenient, sought-after information in an accessible manner. Content is king, and finding and distributing much-needed content on your site will make it both successful and profitable.

To bring potential subscribers into your membership site, focus on their needs. Information consumers have a need for useful content on their topic of choice, a need to know the newest information, and a need for a sense of belonging. By meeting each of these needs, and demonstrating how you plan to do so in your sales letter, you are on your way to increasing your membership.

First, you’ll need to consider which topics are profitable. What content is highly in demand at the moment? What do people need information about? What do people want to know how to do? If you are answering a frequently asked question, you just may have the right topic for your membership site. Spend some time on forums, and notice what questions pop up repeatedly. Find answers to those questions. Find products that teach skills people want to know. Market to this need for useful content, and you’ve got a great start!

Next, consider that some potential subscribers may already know the information you found in your above search. Each market will have subscribers with basic, intermediate, and advanced knowledge – you want to sell your memberships to all three types. Research the newest, hottest information on your topic of choice. Did a new method of organizing widgets just hit the media? Be sure you have updates on this information for your widgets membership site. Provide your members with hot new products and information, to ensure they keep coming back for more.

Last, cater to your members need to belong to a group. Potential subscribers, like most people, want be part of successful groups of like-minded people. Market your site as just the group they want to join. Check in with your members often through forums and email newsletters, and be sure that new members know they can ask you for help if needed. Provide a sense of community, and pride in that community. This will help ensure that your new subscribers become steady subscribers.

When building your membership site, focus on profitable topics. Be sure to include new, up to date information for subscribers with an intermediate to advanced knowledge of your topic. Work hard to build a community of like-minded individuals. This will ensure your continued success in your site-building efforts.

But let’s face it.. those 140 characters can be distracting and time consuming. There are great tools, like TweetDeck, or Hootsuite to help you manage your tweets but you have to enter those 140 characters and push send.

Here is a little tool that I found to help me manage my tweets while I’ve been neck deep in work… so that my Twitter stream doesn’t dribble away without me

It’s a free wordpress plugin called Related Tweets by the Blog Traffic Exchange. I love it!

You install the plugin as you would any of your other WordPress plugins. Related Tweets plugin uses the powerful Blog Traffic Exchange search engine to find content and lets the user choose what to publish it on his Twitter account.

Once you activate your plugin, set your options in the control panel, choose what blog categories you do not want to include and add your Twitter account. You select how often you want to post related tweets then continue to tweet as you normally do while the Blog Trafic Exchange publishes content on topics related to your blog.

I confess, I am a strong believer in non-automated social networking tools, but this one is different. It’s providing quality content, related to my topic, not spammy affiliate links, AND my followers enjoy it! That’s the most important point here- I will jump on Twitter and find that five or 10 people of Re-Tweeted a post that was made by plugin.

This means, my overall exposure on Twitter has grown as well and I have personally Tweeted far less then I ever have due to my focus on work projects.

Why use a Premium WordPress Theme verses a Free WordPress Theme?

1. My first answer is bells and whistles- you want professional- go premium. You aren’t getting a free site made by Joe Shmoe that has hacked up code that is going to make a mess of your site and they have lots of extras built in that make customization easy.

2. Support- The large majority of premium WordPress themes will offer a support forum and this is crucial for those that are beginners and may run into a snaffu here or there.

There are millions of free WordPress themes that are very good and may work for your needs, but the below themes will cut down on your time tinkering with making things layout the right way or look how you want it and allow you to spend more time on your content and promoting.. you know.. the parts that MAKE you money!

Affiliate Theme by Unique Blog Designs

While this is an easy install and setup for affiliate bloggers, this premium WordPress theme can easily be used to promote and highlight your own services or products and services.

This theme comes with a wide range of page layout selections, colors and tons of options in the dashboard. I love this theme for the simplicity that anyone, even the most non-techy person, can create a very personalized blog without knowing a spec of html code.

Thesis Theme

This theme is a clean and crisp design that is well search engine optimized. This theme focuses the theme around how the search engines will see your blog.

I also love that this has an easy option panel from the dashboard that allows you add your feed details, tracking code, and even the ability to customize the fonts and styles of your blog postings with only a few clicks.

You can easily add media such as rotating images or video all from the control panel.

StudioPress Themes

The StudioPress offers a wide selection of Premium WordPress Themes is one of the first themes I bought. You may hear this style of theme referred to as a “magazine” theme because of the flexibility in the overall design layout. You can add a little YouTube video, you can modify the psd files that are included for an extra unique boost, you can leverage the auto-thumbnail management or change options from the drop down panel in the dashboard.. simple simple stuff but powerful enough to let you “grow” with your blog theme.

Last but not least is the…. Elegant Wordpress Theme

This theme does not offer as many customization options as some of the above, but for one low yearly price you have lots of themes to choose from. Their support forum is helpful and prompt in their responses.

1. SITE

Although you could definitely try to sell a product without a website, you wouldn’t get very far. Your website and domain name will give your product a home online. Working without a website is just an exercise in futility. Try to find a domain that represents your product or is your product name exactly.

2. SALESLETTER

To be successful, you need a sales letter on your webpage and a link to your payment processor…and that’s it! Don’t link to other websites or show paid advertising on your product’s website. A sales letter will catch the attention of the visitors and convince them why they need to purchase your product. Read up on creating winning sales letters or have one created by a master copywriter for maximum success. Always have in mind, that you want your visitor to complete one action- what is your page calling them to do?

3. SHOWCASE

You’ll need at least a header for your website and an e-cover for your product to look professional. You’d be surprised how far a few quality graphics can get you when it comes to selling online. People are very visually oriented. If your site looks drab and boring, your website visitors will click away pretty quickly. You can find headers and ecover graphics for anywhere from $50 to $500 depending on the experience of the designer. I love the talented, young designer at SharpPixelDesigns, he created my header and several special report ecover graphics for me.

4. SOFTWARE

Information products are delivered as PDF files, MP3’s, and video files. You want to use the PDF format for print because they are easy to read but they can’t be edited so the content of your product will stay intact. You can purchase Adobe Acrobat or use a free PDF creator to change your Word document into an easy to read file. I also use the free audio software, Audacity, to record MP3’s and of course my handy FLIP camera for video.

5. SALES

You can’t sell products without a payment processor. Most people use Paypal, but there are other options as well like Google Checkout. Before you start driving traffic to your sales letter, make sure your payment system is working right. Buy a copy of your own product to be sure that the payment processor is working correctly. This way you can be sure that your visitors are able to buy. If you are taking your selling serious, I highly recommend using a Shopping Cart system, that includes all the features of a professional business- an autoresponder, affiliate program, digital and physical product delivery systems.

6. SYSTEM

Although not every product has a high enough price point to support an affiliate program, you should certainly move toward writing and promoting products that will attract affiliates. With affiliate marketing, you can have master marketers driving traffic to your website and creating sales for you. Again, the Shopping Cart System I recommend includes all you need to manage your affiliates with a few clicks of the mouse.

7. STRATEGY

Successful product creators know that once they create the product and build the website they have to drive traffic to the sales page. If you start out with a complete strategy of marketing your website, you’ll be able to put it into place as soon as your website is ready to go. Article marketing campaigns, joint ventures and pay per click advertising can all be part of your strategy. I was very excited to see Scott’s email this a.m. even though I was surprised it didn’t have my workout videos but instead a great motivational mp3 that I could load into my walking mp3 player AND more great healthy recipes. Persuasion isn’t rocket science; it involves understanding aspects of human nature that are often automatic and work at a subconscious level. Here are 7 ethical ways to persuade people.

1. Show what others are doing

People look to others and will often do what they’re doing, especially when uncertain about something. This psychological phenomenon is called social proof. People feel reassured and often make decisions based upon what other people are up to – the assumption being that they possess more knowledge or are better informed than they are.

You can increase social proof online by showing:

• Most popular items
• ‘Customers who bought this also bought’
• Top sellers
• Testimonials

Additionally, people will do what people that they like do.

2. Show user-generated reviews

User-generated reviews can have a massive influence on peoples’ buying decisions. Fuelled by the rapid growth of web 2.0 and social media they’re becoming an essential part of website design. Allow your site users to write reviews and express overall ratings for products and services on your site – after all, it’s free content for your site. Web users are more inclined to trust what people like themselves say, compared to marketers. Reviews are especially critical in sectors like travel and electrical goods, although they’re rapidly being adopted across all areas.

People generally want user generated reviews and if they can’t find them on your site, they’ll simply look elsewhere. There’s no hiding online so you might as well keep them on your site. Sites like Figleaves⁷ and the UK Apple store⁸ website understand this and implement them really well.

Also, don’t be scared of bad reviews – people can smell sites that have been ‘edited’ a mile away, forcing them to simply not trust anything you say. Instead, be prepared to act quickly on your customers’ feedback.

3. Show scarcity of products

Scarcity generates demand and encourages people to buy sooner. People want what they think they can’t have and social psychology would indicate that loss is a more powerful emotion than gain. So, a person who loses $100 is estimated to lose around twice as much satisfaction as another person will gain from a $100 windfall.

You can show scarcity online by displaying:

• ‘For 1 week only’
• ‘2 items in stock’
• ‘Sale ends today’
• ‘Out of stock – Add to wish list’
• ‘This offer ends in 2 days 4 hrs 3 mins 17 secs’ (Count down timers)

The numbers decrease daily until all places have gone, giving visitors a sense of urgency to book their place before it sells out. Research on decision-making also indicates that people value something more so if they felt they lost out on it, rather than if they never had it in the first place.

4. Persuade with pictures & videos

Imagery is a very persuasive tool in increasing product sales especially for high value and luxury goods, so be sure to provide good quality images of products. They go a long way to reassure people about what they’ll be getting.

Images should:

• Be of professional quality
• Offer different views
• Be enlargeable
• Show scale and context of use

Oli¹⁰, which sells clothing online, has gone a step further. They have 15 second video clips of models wearing the clothing, walking down a catwalk enabling you to get a better feel for how a product looks and moves. With increased bandwidths, this may be the future for some types of sites. Watching videos requires less effort than reading and offers a richer experience – be sure to give users the choice and not to start videos automatically.

5. Cross- and up-sell

The person that suggested “Hey, why don’t we ask customers if they want fries with that?” was on to something big. Once people have committed to a purchase, persuading them to buy more becomes easier as one foot is already in the door. The same applies online too.

Don’t underestimate the potential profits to be had by up- and cross-selling. Display related items and extras near products like they do in real stores. This will make it quicker and easier for people to buy more items. If you browse for bagels on Ocado¹¹, for example, they also show you cream cheese and when you checkout they display any offers you missed out on – a clever tactic to persuade you to buy more.

6. Show authority

The principle of authority states that we’re more easily persuaded by those with authority. If Tiger Woods gave you advice on your golf swing, you’d be more inclined to follow it compared to the same advice from your mate, Bob. Likewise, websites showing authority and expertise are trusted more. This is particularly important for B2B sites.

You can show authority by:

• Showing you’re an expert
• Backing up facts with links to 3rd party sites
• Referencing governing & authoritative bodies
• Displaying symbols and imagery of authority e.g. VERITAS, padlocks for security

7. Allay people’s fears

What if I need to return items? Are there any hidden costs involved? These are the sorts of fears web visitors may have and you need to reduce them if you want to persuade people to do business with you. Answering their concerns upfront and quickly will positively influence people and lower their fears.

Conclusion

Persuasion in its simplest form means giving users the information they need to make an informed choice, helping them to trust you and allaying any concerns they have. It’s not about manipulation. Always remember, these persuasive tactics will only get you so far – your site still needs to provide a good service and be highly usable to guarantee success.

You can make the questions multiple choice and give them a few different options. Add the link to the survey in your autoresponder program and then gather the results from your previous buyers.

A great way to find a surefire product idea is to look at the product affiliate networks, like Clickbank, Ejunkie or Paydotcom. I’m not talking about ripping off ideas. I’m talking about finding existing gaps in the market and filling those needs. For example, if you’re looking through Clickbank and notice a lot of products on growing your own organic garden you know that those sellers are tapping into a profitable market. However, you also notice that not one of these books talks about how to store the abundance from your organic garden. This is an important part of making the most out of your garden. Since so many people are growing organic gardens these days, it’s going to be a profitable niche. On top of that, you can contact one of the people who have a gardening eBook and do a joint venture.

CHECK out peaking trends.

Tools like Google Trends can help you find out what topics are growing in popularity. By jumping on a rising topic, you can be the first to the market with a topic. Being the first product in a particular niche can secure your dominance in that niche, even after other people jump on the bandwagon. Keep an eye on peaking trends and see how you can create a product to meet the needs of those in on that trend.

If people are writing about topics in the magazines- you know that those are tested topics that people are paying money for.

Any one of these methods could give you enough topics for your next ten products. Don’t sit on your laurels after you’ve created your first product. Use that momentum to jump on the next product idea and you’ll be able to build a long term infomarketing business.
