Fall Ya'll!

Yay! It’s Fall Y’all! I’m totally loving this weather… still warm- not crazy Atlanta humid warm, but good 70s warm. Nights are breezy and so fab we can keep all the doors and windows open. Think this may be my new favorite season. Sorry Summer. You may have lost me at 102 this year. With that said, it’s been so long I figured a few posts are due. Who is this moms crafty person? Does she really blog one a month? LOL.

Baby Girl 3 is now 7 weeks old and maternity leave is coming to an end way too soon. Oddly enough I had a huge big fat list of “I wanna do this” while on maternity leave and not all that has been done. I have accomplished this:

· Had a baby (Okay not really a 'to do' per say, but pretty cool)

· Burn maternity clothes

· Clean out all three closets

· Donate 4.5 million bags of clothes to others

· Clean out old toys and donate

· Make a fall centerpiece on our dining room table (lofty goals, eh?) and decorate for fall

· Organize and declutter all bathrooms and cabinets

· Spend way too much money on things I “Need” at Target

· Take a nap or two a week (this is awesome, p.s.)

· Spend an enormous amount of time with my boys and new daughter (by far the best!!)

One project I've wanted to try is to transform a few beside table lamps into this PB Mercury Glass Lamp look, but on the cheap and cheap since these babies run $259:

A little bummed because I thought I could just use any type of surface and get the Mercury Glass effect but after trying this on a few items around my house today, it only gets the look from glass.

Guess I should read more closely. I used a glass hurricane and used a squirt bottle to water it prior to spraying. I misted the hurricane between coats and probably did 5 coats. I've got some more practicing to do, fo' sho. Maybe I'll just pour water on the glass instead of spraying with a bottle. I'll try some other glass items tomorrow and do a Part Two for this project.

SO… I need to find an inexpensive glass lamp that I can turn into that Mercury Glass beauty PB sells for a whopping $259. Also, I need 2 burlap shades… any ideas to find a couple at a reasonable price? Could I buy burlap and use my handy lil’ glue gun?

Anyway this crazy mama will post YES I WILL ACTUALLY POST THIS MONTH and share some projects I’ve done while on break. Hope you're all well and thanks for checking in!

Nursery Board

The nursery saga continues!

I’m working on a nursery board to figure out how to make my youngest boy’s nursery into a girl wonderland in the next 2 months. Poor fella is getting booted out and he'll be shacking up with his 3 year old big brother. (Any advice on putting 2 toddlers together in a room?!)

I’m new to this whole board concept but I like to spread out my spending (don’t show this to my hubby) and see the whole idea on paper first! I am totally in heart with this zig zag rug from Urban Outfitters. It's been out of stock for months and months and is BACK ON THE MARKET, BABY! I ordered 2 and am hoping I can put them together as one big rug. We'll see how that pans out!

Would love your feedback on colors, accessories, if I need to start from scratch, etc! I have a white dresser and considering painting it a light pink or dark pink. The basics: Light grey walls with white and pink bedding and grey zig zag rug.

Oh Rachel, how I love her. She is a fantastic DIY'er, maker of all things, mother of 2 kids (one in particular that I hijacked a name from), incredible wife, insane runner, minivan driving woman who knows how to run a family and make everyone jealous on the outside looking in! She basically ROCKS! I peruse her site everyday and if you haven't checked it out before, go now and look at Rachel and Marlene’s blog, Accessorize and Organize. They are fantastic and you'll be inspired to think you can build beautiful diamond jewelry or make a farmhouse table all within clicks.

She's started a baby board on Pinterest for our little girl that's about a month away from making her grand apperance and I'm so thankful for all the awesome ideas. Thanks Rachel! What would I do without you and your 7 am texts?

Designing a GIRL Nursery!

Who’s the worst blogger in the land? I AM!!!

Okay so here’s my pity party: I’ve got a 2.5 year old, a 1 year old and am about to have baby #3 in the next 6-8 weeks. My job has changed at work so I’m spinning out of control most days then I’ve got my other jobs when home, so running a household, working and being prego have kept this mama in the blog free zone. Needless to say, my life has had little time for blogging. I’m missing it greatly and have done so many projects in the past few months but by 11 PM when the house is clean again, toys put away, kitchen back to normal and laundry ½ way done, I’m ready for bed! Slacker. Shame on me!

I’ll be putting some new posts in and my apologies to our great readers for having zero good stuff to see in the past few months.

Updating a Condo!

My husband and I went to Texas last weekend to update a condo we own with another family (yes, we have a condo in Texas but live in Atlanta… long story.) Our partners went out and furnished the condo several years ago with things they had in their house and they bought a bunch of new stuff as well. Thank the lord above they furnished it so we could rent it for the past two years. My husband and I have never been to the condo and thought we were well overdue to make a trip. We got there, assessed what could be updated, made a list and then went to town!

My husband is NOT a shopper. Like not at all. He’s in and out of a store in 5 if there’s an occasion that needs a gift, and that’s about the extent of it. Christmas shopping is done in one day in about an hour and I cover the rest. It’s comical. Well, last weekend we spent 2.5 hours in IKEA alone! He was a trooper and so patient! He picked out so many things we used for the condo and needless to say, I was impressed with his shopping skills and good eye!

We hit IKEA, Marshalls, Homegoods, Ross, Target and a few other local spots to try and find all the stuff we needed.

Our starting point was the living room. It has to include a dining area and also not get in the way of the sliding door to the patio. The original setup just didn’t flow well and it felt very dark and uncomfortable. And the brown wing back chair... It needed to burn in the nearest fire, and fast. Notice brown lamp shade and couch cushions. Say goodbye.

We flip floped the room and started to pile up our salvation army pile... the couch moved to the opposite wall, as did the dining room table.

I loved this wooden carved plaque that used to hang above the couch but just felt it needed to lighten up the space instead of darken it.
HELLOOOO spray paint!

After buying a new leather chair, side tables and pillows from IKEA follwed by new lamp shades and the two wooden plaques sprayed blue, we've got a new living room! SO much more inviting and comfy!!

The dining table fit nicely against the opposite wall and we just rearranged the chairs so two are on the outside. This was a good space saver.

New TV and TV stand cleaned things up a good bit too.

We relocated the TV, recovered the bar stools with IKEA fabric and simplifed the kitchen:

On to the master bedroom! Before...

We moved bed to other wall, added a flat screen and changed all the bedding:

Master Bath after photo since I forgot to take the before. It went from hunter green to navy, white and red. Love this bathroom!

Guest Bedroom is a very small, odd shaped room so putting a full or queen bed in there would prevent you from opening the door. This room was setup originally as best as possible but we found that most people renting had kids.
Before there was a pull out futon sofa, and old computer table and TV.

We donated the futon couch, computer and desk and went with bunk beds and a bean bag corner.

Alll in all, we had such a fun time with this weekend project and we really love the outcome! And IKEA, I heart you!

Wedding Sign

Okay seriously? Is there still a blog out there calling for a crafty mama? Has a mama jumped ship the last few months? Okay, okay… I know I’ve been a horrific blogger lately. This has been a crazy year… with a full time job, 2.5 year old and a 10 month old, life has kept this family very busy. In the midst of all our wonderful chaos, we found out a little surprise was on the way! Baby #3 has kept mama a little under the weather so my nights have been spent retiring to bed early instead of furiously blogging and surfing for fun ideas online!

In an attempt to get back in the saddle, I’m posting a wedding sign I did for a friend of mine last month. She got married outside and wanted a sign pointing towards the reception and wedding. She has such a fun little spark of personality and she loves bold colors. She picked a few colors from the feathers of a peacock and that’s what we used for the sign.

Started with three pieces of evenly cut MDF board... I got the board already painted white to help out with the task of painting. Smart move.

The Bride gave me a picture of a peacock that had the most beautiful colors. We picked a beautiful bold blue and an apple green color and color matched them as best I could at Home Depot. A quart was the perfect size.

Also, having a great roller is key to a smooth coat of paint.

I used my wonderful Silhouette SD machine to cut vinyl in several fonts. Reason #422 why I love my Silhouette. I used white and black vinyl and although it was time consuming, the finished product turned out great.

Here's the first round

Decided to add their wedding date and add another peacock feather on the bottom green board just to balance everything. I nailed it to a 6 foot stake with a pointed end so that they could easily put it in the ground. One mistake I did make was putting the nails in the fron of the MDF board. Should have done this on the backside, but after a little paint, it wasn't as noticeable.

Such a fun project to do and wish I'd thought of it for my wedding!

Ribbons for Everything

Hey everyone! Here is my project of the week ... I painted this lamp with oil rubbed bronze back a few months ago (see previous post "Oil Rubbed Bronze ... Amazing!) But this shade drives me crazy nuts. BORING!

Spring Painting Project

A Spring project is here!

Turn this maple bed .....

And this maple armoire.....

into something spectacular! Maybe a black antiqued finish?

This furniture is circa 1999 people. 1999! (Boy, that will make ya feel old, huh?!) Yes, in 1999, I rather liked this maple look. Now .... not so much. However, I do like the style. Just a little paint and sanding may do the trick.

I will especially have to sand these parts ....

My boys decided to unleash their artistic abilities on my bed with the point of a geometry compass .... hmmmm. No, these are not their initials. This one above is "APSW" ... also know as "Andrew Pirranah Snow Wolf." HAHAHA! I have no idea what that means?

Where was I when they were doing this? I was here ... in my second home. I really should put a TV in here.

So, here is the scoop - I talked with my ever trusting paint store genius, Todd, and got the low down on exactly what I needed to do. There are 2 options.

Option 1(This one takes longer):
Sand it a lot
prime it and wait for it to dry
paint it

Option 2:
Paint it with a premium paint that has a primer built in and NO SANDING!!! (except for the initials carved everywhere)
Uh, I am definitely doing this one. Yes, it costs just a bit more in the paint department, but is totally worth it in the time department.

My plan is as follows:

Take the bed apart
Set up shop in the garage
Clean the heck out of the wood so sanding is not required!
Paint the bed first (next week, paint the armoire)
Let it dry
Sand off some of the edges with a sandpaper block to antique the finish (If you decide to do this, Todd, aka paint genius, says you will need to get an oil based paint so you can sand the edges).

I am starting the project soon!

Spring is here in Georgia and it is time to get outside, enjoy the weather and paint this atrocity!

Cheap dresser re-Do

Talkin about a cheap dresser .... this one takes the cake! I think it belongs in an office.

It lived in my sister's attic for 5 years. Now I know why! UGLY grey speckled laminate dresser - I think the previous homeowners left it there. :) It weighs a TON.

However, times are tough in this recession and I needed a dresser for my 3 year old, Brady. His clothes are in a plastic 3 stackable drawer system from Target, in his closet. Yes, a good idea, but need more room. Really? Can I make this thing look better?! It will be a stretch.

Lets see .....

Went to Home Depot and bought 2 cans of blue gloss spray paint (had to go back and buy 2 more). Also bought 4 wooden knobs to add to the drawers.

This is after 2 cans of paint. As you can see on the right side .... it looks like camofladge pattern. Must get more paint!

I put the knobs on an egg carton and sprayed them several times at several different angles until they looked good and covered well.

I measured corner to corner, at an angle, to find the center. Then, I predrilled holes in the drawer and screwed in the knobs.

This finished product is better that the previous product. However, acrylic enamel will have to be brush painted on top of this if I really want it to be perfect. That will come along in the Spring. For now, this works great for Brady's room. We have somewhere to put his clothes that is much better than 3 drawer plastic bins.

Hey Crafties. No, I did not fall off the face of the Earth! Although, I do need to snap out of it and get back into posting for y'all.

This is where I have been ....

You would think that having 4 boys is enough chaos for one house .... but Nooooooo ..... I had to go and get a puppy. What was I thinking?! But he is soooo cuuuuttteee!

My last 2 weeks have been submerged in this. The last "crafty" thing I did was clean up a puddle on the floor!

There is one problem though ... the 6 of us can't seem to agree on a name for this little pup. In the 2 weeks we have had him, his name has been one of these:

Puppy
Wilbur
Gus
Rennie
Chewy
Ziggy

PLEASE PLEASE PAAALLLEeeeaaaaassSSSEEEE, help me name him! Post a comment with a name for our pup.

Where does the time go?

WOW! It's February and I haven't posted in quite some time! My apologies, you crafty mamas! Sometimes life just gets crazy and with a full time job, 2 small kids and everything else we fit in our lives, finding time to get a project done isn't always in the equation. We are working on some cool stuff and I promise more ideas and inspiration to come shortly.

I'm working on a sign for a friend's wedding that I'll post at the end of the week and we are working on a king size headboard and a couple of paintings.

Until then, what have you all been up to? Do you find that 32 hours in a day would be better like I do? I need more time and another me because there are so many fun projects to accomplish in our house but not enough hours in the day!

Paint Colors 101

Being a builder’s wife, I have been through some serious paint in my time! I have painted every kind of TAN you can think of on walls, ceilings, trim, etc. Some were great, some were super gross. So, sharing my favorite colors with you is a must.

One thing you must know about paint – paint looks DIFFERENT in every room. If you paint TAN in the kitchen with lots of windows, and you paint that same TAN in a room with one window, they will look different. Solution: Buy a quart of the paint you like, paint a small amount on the wall. Then you will be able to make a better decision on the color to chose.

MY FAVORITE COLORS: (insider secret ~ You can chose ANY color, from ANY brand, and have the paint store color match/mix it for you!)

BENJAMIN MOORE:

This is a great tan, goes with everything! White Dove for trim goes great with this wall tan.

Beach bedroom color … WOW! My favorite by far!!

This is a good creamy, not too gold, not too lemon, YELLOW (Yes, it is yellow!).

Wall Letters

Have I mentioned I love my Silhouette SD machine? If not, I HEART IT!

In no time at all, I was able to make letters for my son’s room and officially put his ‘stamp’ on the nursery… at 8 months old. Bless his heart. Second child gets hosed and I can’t imagine what a third would get! Regardless, my first son's name hung in the nursery for 2 years and once his letters were down, the blue painted dots needed some love.

Still a few holes to cover up from my oldest son’s wooden letters that used to be here.

I used brown vinyl and used the transfer paper to get the letters reasonably straight on the wall. Now, don't mind the bronze light switch plate. It's hideous and that will be replaced shortly. And yes, kind of odd that it's smack dab in the center of the wall, but there used to be a door there and we sealed it up to close off the nursery and just have one door instead of two. Now we need to get an electrician to move the switch. Easy, right? Not so much so it's been on the back burner!

Regardless, I'm happy with the way Luke's letters came out and now if I can just get his room decorated! Need. More. Time.

How to GLAZE painted furniture

After being trapped inside from the snow/ice storm in Georgia for the last 3 days (Yeah, Georgia is not prepared for winter weather, embarrassing), I decided to show you how to glaze a table. I previously painted this side table with Benjamin Moore #1564 Beach Glass in a flat finish.

I used a can of glaze from a cabinetry shop .... but you can buy glaze at any home improvement store.

Dip your brush, pull the brush up the side of the can to minimize amount of glaze on your brush, and paint the entire piece of furniture.

Wipe off the glaze with a cloth or paper towel. Leave extra glaze in the cracks and corners for an antiqued look. I like to wipe the glaze in one direction then I wipe it in the opposite direction for more texture. If it is not dark enough for you, let it dry a bit (10 min) and go back over using the same process.

As you can see below, the brown glaze gives a small hint of color in several directions.

Let the glaze dry overnight. Next step is laquer or poly. I used a laquer I had from the cabinetry shop ... once I started it became too sticky. I suggest using a clear poly instead of laquer. You can get poly at any home improvement store. Paint it on in a thin layer and let it dry overnight. The poly will protect your piece from drink circles and scratches and will give it a slight sheen.

Easy to do ... go paint and get crafty.

Resolution #1: Clean Closet

My first NY Resolution was to get our closet back to neutral ground. It has been out. of. control!For months and months we’ve (I’ve) piled clothes up, thrown shoes everywhere, hid things I didn’t know what to do with when company came over, laid clothes on top of hanger rods that I was too lazy to hang up, and our winter clothes storage bins have been hogging space. To get dressed or even find a matching pant to a shirt takes some acrobatics and superior navigational skills

This is embarrassing, but if it helps you get motivated to clean up the space behind the curtain in your room, then worth every shocking picture! Here she is:

Okay that was painful.

So the decluttering process began, the goodwill pile establish and several hours later a much happier closet emerged. I organized tops by length of sleeve (thanks Accessorize and Organize for the great tips!) and I even got a little cuckoo on hubby's side and organized by color. Pants got a new home - a far less crowded, less confused home and all the winter storage bins are back where they belong. In storage.

Still a few too many jeans but I find it almost impossible to find a new home for them!

Now all I need is a mirror! It's so nice to have our closet back and organized. Resolution #1 compete for a whopping $6!

New Year's at the Beach

My family was able to spend the week after Christmas at the beach. What a wonderful way to ring in the New Year!

We have deer and deer and deer and more deer on the island .... who are quite friendly. Many live in the yards of the homes and will eat out of your hand. (I know - you aren't supposed to feed the deer.) This precious baby came right up to us ... all we had was Skittles. Yes,the baby deer liked Skittles. Who doesn't?

Den converted to Toddler Room

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I figured it only appropriate for this year's first post to be something that is so near and dear to my heart. I LOVE before and afters... like mildly obsessed. My husband knows this and would agree 5 million percent. It's a little ridiculous but I ADORE seeing something come to life or get reinvented! So with that said, here is one of our own before and afters and although the new room isn't finished it's fun to see the progress in just 6 months.

Here's the story...

We live in a small bungalow and it really only has two bedrooms (not counting a loft upstairs that is unfinished). When baby #2 arrived in April of 2010, we had to come up with something, and something quick. Sure I could have my 2 year old share a room with the new baby but their schedules were so different. Couldn't imagine the baby waking up all night and our 2 year old as well. So we turned our den into our bugaboo's big boy room/ playroom. Yes, we still have a place to sit and watch Greys Anatomy, football and DIY shows and that room is off our kitchen. We call it our little nook. It's so comfy and cozy so we haven't missed our den too much.

Here's before. The walls were painted by previous owner and this room needed a makeover either way.

(Excuse the mess as I didn't clean up before taking this picture. Also my husband was reading to bugaboo and had no idea I was taking pictures)

The paint color is one of my tried and trues. And if you're in the Atlanta/N GA area and you need a good painter, email me... we've got the best ones and we love Mrs. PaintRight!

The carpet was a splurge along with the plantation shutters. But most everything else in his big boy room was done in a very bargain shoppingness way! I'll post that in a different blog so you can get some ideas on how to get great stuff at a price that you can tell someone about.

Crafty gift idea

My sister called me today to tell me that she got our 3 year old the same gift as his Aunt bought him. A huge bucket of farm animals! What should we do?

He loves farm animals ... will he know they are the same if they are in a different box? Probably not.

Solution: Get a rubbermaid box with a lid, paint pen a cow or horse and his name on top. Wrap the box. Now he will have a huge tub to put both buckets of animals in!

Christmas Ball Wreath

This is SO easy ... AND I saw it on The Today Show and thought, I can totally make that!

Supplies:
One wire coat hanger
4 packs of Christmas balls in various sizes ($2.50 each @ Wal Mart - I bought 3, but had to get 1 more)
2 rolls of ribbon ($1 each @ Wal Mart)
Glue gun (I found out the hard way that I needed this!)

Follow the pictures! So simple my kids helped!

I found this out the hard way ... BEFORE you start putting the balls on the wire hanger ... put a little hot glue on the silver ball hanger to keep it attached to the ball. Otherwise, when they start piling up on the wire, some of them may decide to fall off! Yikes!

Tie the coat hanger in a twist so it can hang on a nail.

Make a bow. If you need a Bow tutorial ... Get a bread tie ready before you start. Make a loop of ribbon on each side 4 times at various lengths and tie it in the middle with your bread tie. Once it is assembled, you can fluff your bow to make it look pretty. Use a lot of ribbon ... more is ALWAYS better on a bow. A ribbon with a little bit of wire in the edge makes it easier to fluff.

I put 3 tiny glass balls on a bread tie to tie my bow. Crafty!:)

Tie your bow and make a loop with your wire. I looped a rubber band on the wire to hang it on a nail above my window.

So cute ... honestly ... I did not hot glue my hangers to the balls. I wish I had because 6 fell off trying to hang this on the window! Then it took me forever to find where the balls go in the stack. Since it was placed here, above my kitchen sink, my son and I have made a bet: How many balls will fall off BEFORE Christmas? His bet:10 ... my bet: 6.

11 days until Christmas! Where did December go???

After having zero internet all weekend, I was unable to do a post and more importantly SHOP ONLINE! With that said, I’ve borrowed my neighbors wifi tonight and am happily doing a post ordering Christmas gifts. Ahhh… how did we operate before Internet? And thank you to my lovely neighbor Rosa for sharing her wifi. :)

In the last week and a half, we’ve done all our decorating and it’s hard to believe we’re half way through December already. Here are a few pictures of Christmas decor and ideas...

Christmas Decor

I saw this in a magazine or on a blog but cannot remember where and it's driving me nuts! I think it was Pottery barn but for the life of me I can’t find it online. Regardless, this is totally not my idea but I couldn’t wait to do this project. A few tree branches, a little spray paint and a trip to the dollar store made this project a total of $2 and it's so cute for Christmas!

I started with this pitcher which I adore. Love Jalisco

These ornaments came from Dollar Tree and have just the right bit of sparkle!
