It’s a typical morning at Scranton’s third largest paper company until, for no logical reason, a documentary crew begins filming the lives of the employees of Dunder Mifflin. Don’t miss this hilarious, unauthorized parody of your favorite TV show, now coming to Boston. Mashable calls the show “the world’s most elaborate inside joke, created with a whole lot of love, just for fans.”

We love seeing all of the Halloween decor and costume inspiration from Dia Los Muertos – Day of the Dead – this time of year. When we came across this $1 light up skeleton pirate mask at Dollar Tree we knew it would be perfect for a colorful Day of the Dead mask!

Here is what you need for supplies (we purchased our at Dollar Tree):

• Light up mask
• Color fabric paint & glitter glue
• Arlene’s tacky glue
• Black permanent marker
• Artificial flowers
• Other – we had these items at home: white spray paint or primer, hot glue, scissors, covered surface

Getting Started

Collect all your supplies and cover your work surface to protect it from all the glue and paint goodness that comes with crafting.

Remove the mask from the packaging and spray with a coat of primer or white paint. You can also cover it with paint and a brush but using a spray paint goes so much faster!

Once you have your dry skeleton mask its time to get creative! We started with the black, slick, fabric paint. We liked it because it is slightly raised and shiny.

Next while that dries, grab your tacky glue and the floral jewels. These can be added anywhere around the mask .

While the glue dries its time to start adding colorful dots, dashes, and more to bring your mask to life! There is no wrong way to decorate when it comes to these masks – enjoy and have fun!

We trimmed the edge of the mast where the pirates bandanna was to even the face out a bit using scissors. When your project has dried it’s time to add a floral headband to the top. We used a variety of artificial flowers and added them using a hot glue gun.

Get there early!

Take advantage of all that the big top has to offer and get there early. The tent typically opens 1 hour before the show. The BIG APPLE CIRCUS has pre-show entertainment that everyone will enjoy. While we were there we got to have photo ops with a stilt walker, a juggler, Peter Panic, and more. If your younger circus goers want to participate in a pony ride, there is a separate fee for this. The ride takes place inside the big top under the supervision of animal presenter, Jenny Vidbel,  with the miniature horses and ponies used in the performance.

When my friends hear me say the word ‘popovers’ they say “No way – I could never make those.” but you can and it’s easier than you think.

I love the idea of making soup and popovers from scratch – my grandmother taught me how, but after a full day of family commitments and being ‘on the go’ – I wanted comfort food for the family but needed something that required little prep.

Here are 2 items I keep in the pantry for just this type of occasion: King Arthur Traditional Popover Mix and Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup Mix.

Great Soup Mix – Just Add Water!

The Best Popover Mix I have Found!

This soup only requires you to add water and the popovers just need a few ingredients, eggs, butter and water – pretty simple stuff that even I usually have on hand.

The soup is easy to doctor up to make it just the way YOU like it – add some crumbled bacon, shredded cheese, sour cream or chives – add as little or as much as you like – the soup comes together in 15 minutes.

The popovers take a bit more attention and time – but the end result is delicious. Make sure you let the batter sit at room temperature for 30 minutes (that can be tricky, but without letting the batter rest the popovers will come out flat).

This year to pull one over on the kids, we’ll be serving eggs sunny side up – I mean GUMMY side up!

I’m wondering if our son will squirm when he sees these eggs on his plate!

These gummy Fried Eggs are perfect for pulling one over on the kids. We paired the gummy eggs with some small pumpernickel bread for added effect.

Did Your Parents Ever Play an April Fools Day Food Prank on You?

As a child I was so afraid to eat an egg. It didn’t matter how you planned to serve it up – there was no way I was going to eat it – scrambled, hard boiled, in an omelet – nope, not going to eat it. So if eggs were on the menu for breakfast I was allowed to make my own bowl of cereal or some toast for myself.

Then one day, which happened to be the first day of April, my father served me up a big sunny side up egg on my plate. He said there was no other options today.

I cried. Yes, I cried. Dad said, “She can’t leave the table until that egg is gone completely.” I gasped, gagged and cried some more. I sat there for almost an hour (it felt like 5 hours). Dad just chuckled away cooking up some more eggs for his breakfast. My younger sister quietly sat eating her serving of egg.

Then he finally broke down. Dad told me to stop crying – I guess it wasn’t funny anymore – and told me the ‘egg’ was made out of white chocolate! No wonder my younger sister ate hers without any complaints.

Start with a Base

Decorations and Adhesive

• Aleene’s Tacky Glue, or thick white glue that will adhere to wood and dry clear – we let the kids load up the glue, it works very well and it’s thick consistency holds even heavier objects (like rocks and shells) in place.
• Mosses, bark, twigs, small stones, dried leaves, acorns, mulch, mini pinecones and even feathers were collected in and around the yard.
• Looking for a beach cottage for your fairy – try collecting shells, sand and driftwood to add to your fairy house.

 Getting Your Fairy House Move In Ready

1. Prepare your work area, outside is great but if temperature and weather isn’t working in your favor, a plastic tablecloth or newspaper makes a great work surface and clean up easy.
2. Help the kids prepare by going on a nature collection in the yard – any little pieces that they find can be incorporated.
3. When you are ready to start decorating, apply a layer of glue to the wooden base, one surface at a time and add your treasures.
4. Let everything dry overnight and you’re fairy house will be move in ready once dry.
5. Place your fairy house outside and add a walkway, rock picnic table, or even their own mini garden.

Your Mattress, Pillows and Blankets

Encase your mattress. It sounds simple and it is. I purchased a zippered mattress cover to cover the entire mattress – it does not have to be plastic. Today’s allergy products are soft to the touch, yet have a protective barrier. You can find one at a big box or bedding store.

My husband has a favorite pillow, the thought of replacing it wasn’t even up for discussion. We did purchase a pillow cover for it, a simple solution that provides big results.

We gave away the down comforter and switched to a down alternative comforter. Down alternative comforters are easy to care for, can be washed and dried without care and today you can find them in many colors.

Window Treatments

I grew up with curtains on every window. Not anymore.

I have replaced our heavy curtains with a sheer panel on top of a washable blind in our bedroom.

Now I am able to easily wipe down the blinds and throw the panels in a hot wash.

Rugs and Carpet

My allergist recommended getting rid of our carpeting. I thought this was a daunting task, but since we were concentrating on the bedroom it was actually manageable.

We pulled up the wall to wall carpet and replaced it with an adhesive vinyl tile. I was hesitant but wasn’t ready to commit to putting down a wood floor. The solution actually was affordable and worked out great, not to mention how easy it is to clean.

The great thing about these pre-painted chalkboard eggs is that there is no prep work needed. Simply open the package and get decorating. Our kids loved the white on black contrast – they tried a few with the colored chalk markers but were happier with the results of the white on black.

We used both stick chalk and a white chalk marker. The design possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Stripes, dots, drawings, swirls and more.

Displaying Eggs

How do you display your decorated eggs? Our family purchased a tuft of artificial grass that we use a centerpiece for the eggs on our table. Hint: the grass also makes for a great place for the eggs to ‘dry’ if you use a chalk marker.

• Vase – repurpose a vase and instead of filling it with flowers try these chalkboard eggs – they will definitely be the talk of the table.
• Egg cups – yes, egg cups. Using a traditional egg cup and placing a non-tradition decorated chalkboard egg in it will create quite a contrast.
• Trays- there are some great metal trays that make perfect decorated egg displays. Add a little artificial grass or moss and create an amazing centerpiece.

Playing Under the Big Top at Assembly Row April 7-May 6

Big Apple Circus returns to the Boston area and we are so excited! It is their 40th anniversary season!

The show was amazing and  absolutely the most perfect family entertainment for ALL ages. All 3 generations of our family attended on Sunday, April 8th and made memories! It was awesome. To see my niece’s jaws drop during the trapeze  and my mom and son laugh non stop during the water scene, it was totally priceless for me. We had a wonderful time and highly recommend this performance!

Mom’s Lifesavers Tips at the Big Apple Circus

#1 First, get your tickets

Take advantage of discounts for all opening week performances.

#3 Show time – there are plenty of things to do under the big top before the show begins.

There are 2 schools of thoughts to this one.

• One, get there right before show time and head straight for your seats.
• Two, hang out under the big top, get your face painted, take a pony ride or visit Francis the miniature horse and have your picture taken. All these fun activities will cost a little extra and have lines associated with them, the earlier you are there the more time you will have to do these extras.
• Security: Screening of bags take place at entry.  Leaving your snacks and drinks at home is a good idea,  they will not be allowed into the big top.
• Note: By arriving 30 minutes before show time, we were able to pose for a picture ($25 includes a Big Apple Circus frame, 3 pictures (printed while you wait)  and a digital download) use the restrooms (portable bathrooms) and have enough time to purchase lemonade and popcorn for the show.

#4 Food & Drink – You will find all the circus staples under the big top.

You’ll find:

#5 Showtime – Sit back and enjoy the show.

There is a 15 minute intermission about an hour in. There are a few moments when the performers will be out in the audience, be ready to laugh!
