University Womens Club Scholarships

If you will be attending Toledo University for example, or any other university that has a University Womens Club, and you are a mom, you may be interested in the University Women’s Club Nontraditional Student Scholarship. While this scholarship is available for all female non-traditional students, as a mom, you can apply to this mom scholarship and grant opportunity if you fit the criteria. Although moms are normally older students they are considered to be non-traditional students. If this is describing you then you should be seeking not only scholarships for moms and scholarships for single moms, but also scholarships for non-traditional students from the UWC at any college you are considering attending.

The purpose of a University Womens Club is to bring forward friendships between its’ members so as to strengthen their association of common interest thus to supply service to the University in yeary funding scholarships, and to champion service to the community through the UWC service projects. Some of the many benefits of belonging to a UWC would include – participating in interest groups, programs and events held throughout the college year – chances for advocacy, community service, friendship, and personalized development through UWC activities – improving ones probability for students in learning, leading and living by providing college scholarships.

In order to be eligible for the University Womens Club Nontraditional Student Scholarship, you must be a woman, and a nontraditional student. You must also show that there is a financial need. Those who win the award are selected based on their academic achievement, and must have a GPA of at least 3.5.

The average amount awarded for this potential mom scholarship is worth about $1200, but this varies from one chapter to the next. The number of awards available will also vary, and there usually are a University Women’s Club at most major Universities.

Each chapter of the UWC will have their own eligibility requirements, in terms of age, your academic progress, and more, however typically, in order to be eligible for the award, you must be a resident in the state where the chapter of the UWC is located. For example, if you are applying for the UWC Scholarship through the University of Alabama, you must be a resident of Alabama in order to be eligible.

If you are a woman – and particularly a mom – make sure that you check with the college that you will be attending to see if there is in fact a University Womens Club, and then check either with your financial aid office, or the club chapter directly to see if UWC scholarships are available, what the eligibility requirements are, what the application requirements are, and what the deadline for applying is. Even if only one award is made annually, go ahead and apply remembering that somebody is going to win it – and that somebody could be you.

Finding scholarships for moms and for single moms isn’t easy but there are scholarships specifically for women from the Charlotte W Newcombe Foundation.

Newcombe Foundation

Finding scholarships for moms and scholarships for single moms isn’t always easy; there are scholarships specifically for women in abundance. For example, while the Newcombe Foundation Scholarships are not specifically reserved for moms, they are reserved for women, which definitely makes moms eligible.

The Charlotte W Newcombe Foundation began in 1979 upon the death of a Philadelphia philanthropist Charlotte W Newcombe who left half her estate to the creation of the Newcombe Foundation. Mrs was a devoted Presbyterian who believed in helping people towards a higher education. In fact, she left the other half of her estate to the Princeton Theological Seminary even more establishing her strong convictions about her educational beliefs.

Applying for a Newcombe Foundation Scholarship isn’t like applying for other scholarships, however. You see, these women scholarships or funds are awarded directly to colleges, but they are intended for mature women who will be attending those schools. You must be over the age of 25 in order to be eligible. You must also have junior status, or 60 credit hours, and continuing to study towards receiving your bachelor’s degree.

The foundation does not select who will win these awards. The schools that receive the funds will make that selection, and the number of winners, and the amount of the awards will be dependent on the funds that the school received. The latest donations made to selected schools totaled over $677,000. The average winner of these awards is about 36 years old, and has a GPA of about 3.5. These scholarships for women range in award amounts from a very small $125 to a whopping $10,250 per semester. The average award, however, is about $2000. Again, this depends on the funds that are available at each school, and the number of applicants who are deserving of the awards.

Check with the financial aid officer at your school to see if they have received funds from the Newcombe Foundation. If they have not, they can apply for these funds at http://www.newcombefoundation.org/scholarship_mws.html. From there, you will make your application directly to the school that you are attending.

Again, there are not a large number of scholarships for moms or single moms, and while there may be an abundance of scholarships for women in general, you can use all of the help you can get. Make sure that your school is receiving these funds, and that you apply for this women scholarship.

State Mom Scholarships

Depending on what state you live in, you may find that there are state funded scholarships for single moms. If this is the case in your state, these are funds that you need to take advantage of. It is expected that at some point in the future, all states will have these college scholarship opportunities, in an effort to further educate all citizens of the state, and to improve the economical outlook and conditions of those states.

For example, the state of Arkansas has the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund. This fund makes many scholarships available, which pay the entire tuition cost for four years of education, for as long as you remain eligible. The single parent scholarships also cover the cost of books, and funds can additionally be used for other expenses associated with your education, such as transportation and child care. In order to be eligible, you must be a single parent, and you must reside in the state of Arkansas. You can get more information about this program at http://www.aspsf.org.

The state of Florida has a similar state funded scholarship program for single moms and dads. However, those individuals who qualify must reside in certain counties, such as Palm Beach County or North Broward County. This great scholarship is the George Snow Scholarship Fund, and you can get more information at http://www.scholarship.org/.

The College of DuPage Foundation Single Parent Scholarship is offered in the state of Illinois, for single parent residents of the state. You must be a part time student, at the very least, and maintain a GPA of 2.0 in order to be eligible. You must also reside in District 502, and demonstrate financial need for the award. You can learn more about this scholarship for single moms and dads by going to http://www.cod.edu/dept/fin_aid/scholarships/cod_singleparen.htm.

In the state of Kansas, you can apply for the Single Parents with Children Scholarship if you will be attending Emporia State University full time, and if you have a financial need. Additionally, state scholarships for single moms and dads are available in Iowa, Minnesota, Utah, Wisconsin, and Washington.

In your state, you should check with the financial aid office at the school that you will be attending to find out about available scholarships for moms that are state specific. You can also check with the Board of Education or Department of Education in your state to find out what state sponsored scholarships for single mothers are available as well.

Displaced homemaker scholarships for moms from the Association on American Indian Affairs AAIA.

Displaced Homemaker Scholarships

While there are many grant opportunities for a displaced homemaker, there are very few scholarships for moms who have worked themselves out of a job – homemaking. The kids are grown, and mom is ready to finally see to her own needs, starting with her education. After the expense of raising kids, there isn’t much left to pay for that education, which is why you need scholarships for moms and grants for moms – especially those for displaced homemakers.

Aside from grant opportunities, the only real scholarship available for displaced homemakers is the one offered by the Association of American Indian Affairs, at http://www.indian-affairs.org/scholarships/displaced_homemakers.htm. This displaced homemaker scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1500, and is available to undergraduate students, and is paid twice a year, in $750 increments.

The mission of the AAIA is to call attention to the welfare of American Indians and Alaska Natives. They do this by supporting efforts of their cultures and languages, protect their sovereignty, constitutional, legal and human rights, and natural resources; and focusing on cultivating their health, education, and economic & community development. They are the oldest Indian organization in the US – 88 years. They have eight different scholarship programs at this time and amounts awarded vary from year to year based on the gifts of doners. Most of the AAIA scholarships require you to be from federally recognized tribes and who are at least 1/4 Indian blood unless otherwise indicated.

The fund available through this college scholarship for moms may be used towards tuition, transportation, child care, and living expenses. Each semester, you must submit your grades from the previous semester to receive the next disbursement, and you must maintain your grades. Additionally, you must reapply each year to continue to be eligible for the award.

While the award is usually given to women, who are the traditional homemaker’s in the family, it is also available for men who have put their educations on hold, in an effort to raise a family. Naturally, those who apply for and win this award will be adult students.

The displaced homemaker scholarships aren’t just available to those whose children have grown up. It is also available to those who have become displaced homemaker’s through other situations, such as a divorce or a death. When you apply, you must fill out the application, provide your monthly budget, and also write an essay concerning your family responsibilities.

It is interesting to note that while this college scholarship for moms is offered by the American Association of Indian Affairs, there is no evidence that only those who are American Indians may apply or win the award.

For questions on the AAIA displaced homemaker scholarships contact Lisa Wyzlic at lw.aaia@verizon.net or 240-314-7155.

ANTSHE Scholarships

Since moms are generally older students, they are considered to be non-traditional students, and if this describes you, you should be seeking not only scholarships for moms and scholarships for single moms, but also scholarships for non-traditional students. You can start applying for non-traditional student scholarships at the Association for Non Traditional Students in Higher Education, or the ANTSHE.

The ANTSHE offers two separate scholarship opportunities. These scholarships are the Marius Gabe DeGabriele Scholarship and the Kazimour Scholarship. The first scholarship is for graduate students, and the second is for undergraduate students. Either way, the students who apply for these scholarships must be considered non-traditional students. Both scholarships can be applied for using just one form, and this can be accomplished online.

Although the applications can be done online, you must also submit two recommendation letters, which will have to be mailed in, in sealed envelopes. The person who writes the letter must sign their name across the seal. The application and the personal statement can be submitted online, but you must also mail in your transcripts. Applications can also be mailed in, but the information must be typed, or done with a word processor – handwritten applications are not considered.

Additionally, to be considered for either of these mother scholarships, you must be a member of the ANTSHE. If you are applying for the scholarship for moms for graduate students, you should have a GPA of 3.5, and be accepted to a graduate program as a full time or part time student. If you are applying the undergraduate scholarship, you must be enrolled in either a degree program or certificates program as either a half time or full time student, and have already completed at least 30 credit hours of study. You must additionally have maintained at least a 3.25 GPA. If you are in a two year program, you need to have completed at least 15 credit hours of study. To apply go to ANTSHE scholarships for non traditional students. May 1st is the application deadline and for further questions you can email at scholarshipofficer@antshe.org.

Scholarships for women over 35 can be found through the Jeanette Rankin JRF scholarship for mothers.

If you are over the age of 35 and you are a woman with a low income, you may be eligible for the Jeanette Rankin JRF scholarship. These make great scholarships for mothers because of the eligibility requirements. Moms can use the JRF scholarship to help pay for their college education, enabling them to enter into the workforce, in a great paying job, in order to break the cycle of poverty.

Jeannette Pickering Rankin was born in 1880 and died in 1973. She was an exordinary women of her time in that she was the first woman to be elected to the US House of Representatives and the first women member of the Congress. She was referred to as the Lady of the House which is where that name originated from as today the US president’s wife is commonly referred. A lifelong pacifist, she voted against entering of the US into both World War I and World War II. She was the only member of Congress to vote against entering into World War II. To this date she is the only woman to be elected to Congress from Montana.

The JRF scholarship Fund was set up with the money from Jeanette Rankin’s property upon her death which she wanted used to help unemployed mature women workers who needed help in bettering themselves.

In order to win these potential mothers scholarships by JRF, you must be able to express how a higher education will benefit you, your family, and your community. While the mom scholarship opportunity here is good, it is important to note that not many JRF scholarships are awarded each year, as there have only been just a little over 600 scholarships awarded since 1978 and a total of 1.3 million awarded since its conception. November 1st is when they open applications to be accepted. The deadline is March 1st of each year for submitting your applications.

As stated, you must be aged 35 or older and a woman with a low income. You must additionally be a United States citizen, and be enrolled in college, or at the very least accepted to a college. You cannot already have a college degree, and the school that you are attending must be for the purpose of obtaining a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree, or a technical/vocational degree.

The JRF has specific guidelines as to what constitutes low income, and you must be within their low-income range to be eligible for the scholarships that are offered. The income levels are adjusted by the number of people within your household, and start at $13,578 for one person, and go up to $52,034 for a household of six.

Winners of the JRF scholarship for moms are selected based on their goals, their plan for reaching those goals, past challenges and obstacles, and of course the family’s income. You can get more information about these scholarships for mothers or apply for the JRF scholarship.

You don’t have to be into fishing or even fish at all to be eligible for the IWFA fishing scholarships for moms - just marine sciences.

IWFA Scholarships

You don’t have to be into fishing – or even fish at all – to be eligible for fishing scholarships for moms. You do, however, have to be interested in marine sciences, and you do have to be a graduate student. This particular fishing scholarship is funded, managed, and awarded by the IWFA – International Women’s Fishing Association.

1955 the IWFA was founded with the intent to advance women in fishing which has long been perceived as primarily a mans sport. Ironically the IWFA all started by the wife’s of the men who would attend and participate in these fishing tournaments. The IWFA is looked at as one of the most celebrated fishing clubs for women which regularly sponsors tournaments throughout the world. Becoming a member allows you to participate in these events and other benefits as well such as their monthly electronic newsletters keeping you informed of all upcoming activities and other events and advice from their member website. The IWFA fishing scholarship program is intended to further strengthen conservation in the world – particularly anything related to marine science. Needless to say the IWFA has become wildly popular among fishing women anglers.

In order to be eligible for this mom scholarship, you must be accepted by a graduate program of study in marine sciences. The award amount is $2000, and you must be considered a ‘proper recipient’ for this award. This means that your school must decide that you eligible for the award.

Awards are made based on your personal qualifications that include your aptitude and ability in the study of marine sciences. Your character will also be considered, as well as your academic record. You must also demonstrate financial need in order to be considered for this award. March 1st is the cut off date when all applications must be in.

It is important to note that while this fishing scholarship is awarded by a women’s organization, it is available for men and for women who are pursuing a graduate degree in marine sciences. It is not a scholarship for moms specifically either, but the number of awards that are made each year is not reported, and if you are studying toward marine sciences, this is definitely a mom scholarship that you need to apply for because the competition for the award will be minimal.

You can get more information by going to International Women’s Fishing Association fishing scholarships program. Even if you are not pursuing a graduate degree, or even a degree in marine sciences, you should look for specific organizations that relate to the program of study that you will be pursuing in order to find the moms scholarships that you need – especially scholarships for moms, or scholarships for single moms from those specific associations or organizations.

If you're a victim of spousal or partner abuse you may be eligible for the domestic abuse moms scholarships from ROSE, or Regaining One’s Self Esteem.

ROSE Scholarships

If you have been a victim of spousal abuse or partner abuse, and you are a mother, you may be eligible for the domestic abuse moms scholarships from ROSE, or Regaining One’s Self Esteem. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, this organization strives to empower women, enabling them to stay out of domestic abuse situations, and to provide for their children well – through education. The ROSE Fund all began in 1992 and in 1998 the scholarship program was created.

Aside from awarding funds for medical procedures, dental procedures, and even reconstructive surgeries that are needed as a result of abuse, the organization also provides mom scholarships for college. The moms scholarships that are offered are awarded for the purpose of helping women with career training ad professional development. These mothers scholarships are awarded in amounts of $2000 per semester, and the organization works with colleges, universities, and trade schools in the Northeastern United States.

There are no set parameters for eligibility, or for the award selection, and there is no specific application period or deadline. The winners of these mother scholarships are based solely on need, and solely at the discretion of the ROSE organization and their partners. There does not appear to be a limit on the number of awards made each year; however awards can only be made when funds are available.

It is important to note that while $2000 will be paid for each semester that you are in school, you must still reapply each semester for the award. If you fail to reapply, you will not receive the $2000 award for subsequent semesters. You can apply for the scholarship program at ROSE scholarships.

Additionally, you should be aware that there are many other college scholarships for moms and college scholarships for single moms that are available, and you should apply for all of them as well, including all of the state and Federal grants that you can get. While $2000 may seem like a lot of money, when it comes to the cost of a college education, it doesn’t go very far.

Note: 4/8/2010 – It seems like the ROSE scholarship program was suspended. If you go to their website they have the following scholarship Post:

The ROSE Scholarship Program was created in 1998 to provide survivors with the ability to increase self-esteem and self-sufficiency through the pursuit of secondary education and the achievement of college degrees. PLEASE NOTE: AS OF JAN 1, 2010, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SUSTAIN OUR SUPPORT OF ALL CURRENT ROSE SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS, WE ARE FULLY COMMITTED THROUGH 2011 AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO AWARD ANY NEW SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE

Normally when you see a suspension of a scholarship program it’s a direct result of a lack of funds. As more funding becomes available then scholarship programs can be restarted. The other programs offered by ROSE may be of great benefit to the many that are victims of domestic violence and should be looked at as a substitute for a mothers scholarship. They are unique in nature and applying guidelines are straight forward from their website.

Accounting Scholarships

If you are a single mom, and you want to obtain a degree in accounting, you will need to check into the college scholarships for single moms offered by the Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting, or the EFWA. These moms scholarships are not offered every year, but when they are, they are worth applying for. There are two types of single moms scholarships offered by the organization: The Women in Transition Scholarship and the Women in Need Scholarship.

The Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting, or the EFWA’s sole purpose is to “support the advancement of women in the accounting profession through the funding of education, research, career literature, publications and other projects. The Educational Foundation encourages and enables women to enter the accounting profession and empowers them to achieve equal opportunities and equal rewards”.

The Women in Transition Scholarship is only available to women who will be freshmen, or who currently are freshmen in college. When this mom scholarship is awarded, it pays up to $16,000, which is intended to cover four years of school costs. Only one award is made. Again, this college scholarship for single moms is not awarded each year, depending on available funds.

The Women in Need Scholarship is only available to women who are currently in college, or will be returning to college, at the junior level. This scholarship for single mothers pays up to $2000 per year, for a period of two years. More than one award may be made, depending on available funds. It appears that this single mothers scholarship is available each year.

No matter which college mom scholarship you are applying for, you must be planning to pursue a degree and career in accounting. You must also be the only source of financial support for your family or for yourself, and awards are typically made to women who show financial need as well, as opposed to those who do not show a real financial need. Women who are single parents due to divorce or death are considered first, but women who have never been married, and have dependent children are also considered. You can only apply to one or the other but not both of the above college mother scholarships. You must also be a US citizen to apply and must attend a school in the US. Online classes may qualify too.

The application deadline for the EFWA single moms scholarships is May first of each year, and selections are typically made by the end of June but you can check in January of each year to see which scholarships will be available for that year. For more information go to EFWA scholarships for single moms or to apply.

Women who want to enter the field of national security may want to consider the Homeland Security scholarship for moms known as the Horizons scholarship.

Homeland Security Scholarship

Those women who want to enter the field of national security may want to consider the Homeland Security scholarship for moms known as the Horizons scholarship. This security scholarship is for all women not just moms and should be applied to if you’re a female who plans to enter the field of defense and it makes a great mom scholarship nevertheless. This Horizon scholarship is especially designed for females who plan careers in national security or in other defense related careers. One thing is certain about the outlook for the US security industry is that it will only grow and expand in the future becoming ever more important from each coming year. New branches are being set up every day all across the US & overseas to strengthen US security. Small US cities which have lost there industrial basis are being revitalized because of the national defense industry setting up branches there.

College students & those who will be entering college in the near future must take note of the fact that this is big business all across the US and the job outlook should be consistently strong with good salaries. This type of work is not for everyone but perfect for others. If this all sounds appealing as a career then go for it even if you are not awarded a Horizon Homeland security scholarship for mom. You schouldn’t be disappointed.

The Horizons scholarship fund was created in 1988, for the purpose of encouraging more women to enter into these types of careers in the United States. The Horizons scholarship program is funded by the Women In Defense (WID) a national security organization ‘women’s club’ and a non-profit entity. The WID mostly has members whose
careers revolve around the national security defense of the US. WID membership is all about the promotion & acknowledgment of women in all aspects of national security.

This Department Homeland Security scholarship is also available for women who are already in defense careers, and who plan to further their education in this field. It is important that this is not the same as pursuing a degree or career in law enforcement or in criminal justice. Instead, an example of a defense career would be going to work for Homeland Security.

The amount of the awards offered through the Horizons program varies each year. The selection committee for the awards focuses a great deal on those applicants who plan to study things such as education, math, science, and technology, in regards to how they relate and can be used for national defense.

In order to be eligible for this Homeland Security college scholarships for moms and single parents – and women in general – you must already be enrolled in college, and you can be either a full time student or a part time student. You can be either a graduate student or an undergraduate student, but you must have at least reached junior status – or have at least 60 college credits already completed. You absolutely must show that you plan a career in defense or national security, and you must show that you have a financial need for the award.

Furthermore, you must have a GPA of at least 3.25 and be a citizen of the United States in order to be eligible. July 1st of every year is the deadline to apply by having all required documents turned in. This is a one time award, but if you’ve already won the award, you can apply again. For more information and to apply go to the Horizon
Homeland Security Scholarship for moms.
