I mean: yuck!

Anyway, lately I've been feeling kind of stressed out, and I started thinking about yoga. Yoga and running are very good friends, I've been told. And I suppose that makes sense. Yoga complements running. It's the ying to the yang of running. It's the salt to the running egg, it's the Big Mac you can demolish after running for an hour.

The benefits of yoga for runners

It makes your muscles more supple, thereby reducing your risk for injuries which is always a good thing.

When I tried chirunning, one of the most important lessons was about posture. Yoga is all about postures! So what you learn during yoga, you can use during your runs. Chirunning thought me to think of my pelvic area as a bowl filled with water. It was my job not to spill the water when I ran, so I had to slightly tilt my pelvic muscles to keep the 'bowl' upright. This is an important yoga lesson too.

When you're doing your yoga exercises, your breathing is a central part of the exercise. When you're running how you breathe matters too. Just think of the old beginner's advice: if you can't hold a conversation because you're out of breath, you're moving too fast!

During yoga you have to keep asking yourself: 'How does this feel? How does my body react when I contort my body in this unpleasant way?' That's mindfulness! Another thing that's important when you run: listening to your body.

Yoga is a great way to get a work out while giving your body a break from the pounding of running.

Running skirts: the importance of the right pocket placement

I like my running skirts with pockets, so I can take my cell phone, house key and some money along. But I have found that it's not just about having pockets in your running skirt. It's about where they're placed!

As I am the happy owner of five running skirts, I put them all on, and made a photo collage showing you where the pockets are. And now I'll tell you which running skirt offers the best pockets!

And the winner is: Gore Running Wear skirt

My Gore Running Wear skirt is without a doubt the winner as far as pockets are concerned. It offers two pockets and they are sown onto the tight. Because of this, they don't cause any unsightly bulges and they don't spoil the line the of the running skirt. And they offer enough room for a cell phone!

Running skirts: pockets part of the skirt itself

Whereas the people of Gore Running Wear got it exactly right, the good people of Running Skirts made the mistake of sowing the pockets into the skirt. The pockets are nice and roomy, but if you put a cell phone in them, you'll see an ugly bulge and the skirt is pulled down a bit. A pity!

Asics running skirt: too small, and causes bulge

The bright red Asics running skirt offers pocket that is not only too small, it's also at an odd place: at the front of the skirt. I can't even put a handkerchief in without causing a bulge.

Skirtsports: too small, and sown into the skirt

Het pink skirt of SkirtSports comes with just one pocket too, and like the skirt from Running Skirts it's sown into the side of the running skirt. Unfortunately it's very small, but then again, you can't put big things in it because it would cause the skirt to drop...

Nike running skirt: pocket at the back

Last but not least, the pocket on the Nike running skirt. It's different, because it's at the back of the skirt. I think the placing of the pocket is alright, but it's way too small. Can't put anything in there, except perhaps my housekey and some change.

Top 5 of running skirts with their pockets in the right place

Gore Running Wear rokje

Nike rokje

Running Skirts

Triks

Asics

Summing up!

If you're buying a running skirt, and you like your pockets, the best running skirts are the kind that have the pockets sown into the tight because then the line of the running skirt isn't compromised.

Don't miss any of my posts! And even though I could see the end coming, somehow it still took me by surprise...

In the aftermath of his death there were a lot of things to do, like organizing his funeral.

I'm not an extroverted person

I'm not an extroverted person.

I found all the busyness that came after my father dying very hard. All you gotta do is put on your running shoes and run.

During my runs I felt my mind calm down, and even though I felt grief about my dad dying I also felt close to him. It was like I could see him in the sunlight that was shining through the trees, in birds, in the murmur of a brooke.

It really helped me.

It still does.

The loss is still fresh, but I know I can always go for a run.

Don't miss any of my posts! My whole outfit screamed: 'Don't mind me, I knów I'm just a beginner!'

Real running clothes 'above my station'

At the time I felt real running clothes, the wicking kind, were 'above my station'. My station being: Beginners Central. I didn't want to be one of thóse runners. The ones who dress like the Kenyans, when really they huff and puff their way through a onemiler. I felt I had to prove myself as a runner first.

Do not apply beginner's humility to your shoes

Unfortunately I applied this humbling principle to my shoes too, which were an old pair I found at the back of my closet. Before long, my knees started acting up, so I got myself a pair of real running shoes way faster than I ran at the time! Because being humble is all very well, but as a runner you shouldn't skimp on your footwear.

Real Runner's Station

I've been a runner now for ten years, and I feel I have reached the point of Real Runner's Station. I allow myself cute running skirts, and wicked wicking tops. I no longer feel they are above my station! But I have no illusions, nor aspirations, to reach the highest running caste, that of the Kenyans.

Because I don't like their outfits!

Do you feel there's a kind of 'caste system' for running clothes?
What was your very first running outfit like?
And what do you wear now?

Buying new running shoes is no fun

It's odd: as a mom I lóve buying new shoes, but as a runner I keep postponing it. You have to take whatever the expert tells you suits your feet the best. Usually that's a pair of big clumpy shoes, with colors I wouldn't have chosen in a million years.

Looking into the sole of my running shoe

But when I look at the soles of my running shoes I fear the time has definitely come to get me a new pair. So I'll reluctantly fork over a lot of money for shoes I don't like the look off, and I'll tell myself: 'When it comes to running shoes 'no pain ís my gain'!'

My perfect running shoes!

But sometimes when I lie awake at night, I imagine my perfect running shoes: bright pink and sprinkled with little daisies!

Do you like buying running shoes?
What would your 'dream running shoes' I'm suffering from the same affliction: whenever I talk to someone who is feeling down in the dumps, I wanna tell them to take up running.

Running will make you feel better!

I want to tell them how I'm súre running will make them feel better, how it will improve their life, and how it's the best thing they can do for themselves! But I bite my tongue, because I know there's nothing worse than the (fairly) recenty converted. And I don't want to become a Running Zealot, who people see coming with dread. One who will make them do a u-turn saying to themselves:

'Oh no! There comes that Running Zealot! I hope...

So whenever I feel this almost irrestistible urge to share the joy of running, I take a deep breath, and I go all nonchalant. Saying stuff like: 'It's probably not for you, but what has helped mé tremendously, is running. And I used to be thát girl, the girl who was always chosen last because she sucked at sports. />

One day I decided to run to my parents' house. I figured it would make a nice run of about five miles.
It's a nice route which I don't run very often, because there's this terrible lack of restaurants or places where I can get coffee. But I knew my parents were home, so I'd be able to get my coffee fix there!

Running through a wooded area

I enjoyed the freshness of the path not taken often, and ran merrily along the road I used to ride to school on my bike, so many times as a child. The road to my parents leads through a small wooded area, and as I was halfway through, a little van passed me.

A little van passed me. Then it came back...

I didn't really pay any attention to it, but then suddenly it came back!
'Hm, that's a bit strange,' I thought, but it became even stranger when it slowed down to a standstill.
Silently I said my goodbyes to my dear husband, kids, family, friends and old acquaintances I had forgotten.
'This is it then,' I thought. 'This is the end of the line for me. I'm being kidnapped!'

'Where can I find this little church?'

A very well dressed, elderly gentleman leaned over the passenger seat and said something. From a safe distance I eyed him, still worrying he might leap out of the car, and pull me inside.
'I do apologize for disturbing your run,' he declared in apologetic tones, 'but could you tell me where I can find a little church around here?'
'Sure, you turn back, and then it's right on the left!' I answered relieved.
He thanked me and we both went on our ways.

Soon he passed me again, after having turned his car, and waved solemnly at me. I gave him a friendly nod, but I was still glad when he and his little van disappeared into the sunset. After all, Ted Bundy looked real friendly and neat too.

Was he a reverend instead of an axe murderer?

As I passed the little church I had directed him to, I saw his van standing there, and him at the church door.

In hindsight, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was a reverend.

How careful should you be as a female runner?
Do you run through wooded areas, or across lonesome paths?

Post workout shower

The blissful feeling of a post workout shower is often cited as a reason to go for a run.

There really is nothing like the feeling of warm water cascading over your sweaty body! So when I get out, all freshened up, I can have my coffee and drink it too.

And since I'm a Work At Home Mom no one is bothered about any unpleasant smells I might be emitting.

Itch during post workout shower

But this morning, everything was different. I was expecting a guy to fix our dishwasher. So I had to hop into the shower immediately after my run, or risk being naked when he arrived. It was cold outside, so I set the shower temperature nice and hot. But soon my legs started to itch like crazy! It was like millions of killer ants were crawling across my poor legs. That's when I remembered: 'Oh yeah… you shouldn't take a hót post workout shower when you just came in from the cold'.

Pins and needles during post workout shower: the cause

The reason I got so itchy was because my body was cold. And when your body is cold, your blood flow slows down. Then when you hop into a hot shower, your blood starts moving faster. And that's what causes the pins and needles.

The solution is simple: get your body to room temperature first, before you take a hot shower.

The after shower itch

You can also feel itchy áfter your shower. In that case your skin may be dry. Make sure you pamper your body with some moisturizer or bodylotion. I like to slather my body with some cocoa buttercream.

When a post workout shower isn't an option

I'm lucky because I work from home. But what if you have to squeeze your runs into your lunch break? And there are no showers at your workplace?

Here's a quick fix for sweaty runners who have to work.

Babywipes! Get yourself some babywipes, and put them into your deskdrawer. Use them to freshen up your armpits and your crotch. Don't be stingy with the babywipes. Use a fresh one, for each part.

Talcum powder: talcum powder will get rid of the sweaty feeling, and it will make you smell like a bed of roses.

Dry shampoo: spray some into your sweaty hair, and it will soak up the sweat.

And when you get home in the evening, thén you can have your post workout shower!

I'm going for a run, and I'm taking...

When I go out for my run, first thing I take with me is my house key. I still carry the emotional scars of having to to break into my own home!

I'm going for a run, and I take with me...

Next thing I take with me, is my Fitbit Charge 4, so I know I'm getting the most out of my work out. When it comes to registering my runs, I can't help but feel that it doesn't count if it isn't registered.

Ponder this

I don't wanna get al philosophical on you, but:

'If I go for a run, and I forget to track if with my fitbit, did I still go for a run?'

My smartphone

I also always carry my smartphone with me, because like Joey said in Friends: 'I don't have as many thoughts as you'ld think!' I need the country songs on my Spotify playlist to get me through the run. You know, for when I run out of interesting thoughts. So after about 3 minutes.

A small wallet

On Sundays I do my long runs, which I like to break up with a nice cup of coffee. So on Sundays I also take some money with me, and sometimes I take my mobile phone with me. I take it with me when I feel unsure of how well I'll do: it's like a safety net. Just in case, if I don't feel well or anything. I haven't used it yet.

So there you have it! When I'm going out for a run I'm taking with me:

my Fitbit Charge 4

my smartphone

my keys

my wallet

What do you take with you during your runs?

Running with a face mask: unexpected perk!

I take great care to dress appropriately when it's cold outside, so I can still go for my daily run. But there was one part of me that got really cold, and that was my face!

When I got home I could hardly talk because it felt frozen.

Running with a face mask

'I need something to protect my face against the cold that doesn't slip,' I mused during my run.

And leave it to the process of running to give me a great idea!

Because what protects the face and stays put?!

That's right!

Mouth masks!

So when it's terribly cold, I simply wear one of my mouth masks.

Running with a face mask: some thoughts

Wear a cotton mouth mask.

Make sure you choose one that fits your face well.

Make sure your face mask allows you to breath well.

If you wear glasses during your run, they may fog up during your run.

How do you protect your face against the cold during your runs?

Don't miss any of my posts! Do you greet them like long lost friends, or at least acknowledge them as the running colleagues they are? Or do you look stubbornly in front of you and pass them in silence?

'Good morning!'

I used to shout out a friendly 'Good morning', but too many times, all I got in return was silence. So now I'm a bit torn. Ignoring fellow runners makes me feel uncomfortable but getting no reply doesn't make me feel very warm and fuzzy either. It's a bit like getting snubbed! There you are, putting yourself out there, and then you get the cold shoulder.

The 'popular' runners

Also, it's easier to greet some runners than others. It's those very thin male runners, in 'real' runner's shorts that I hardly dare say hi to. They're like the popular group in high school, in which I will never fit in. I find it much easier to greet runners who look like they want to take a really long nap.

A very special greeting...

Anyway, even though I don't have an answer to the question: 'To greet, or not to greet' I do know one thing: if someone greets yóú, you should always respond in kind!

Otherwise I know a very special way of greeting.

It involves my middle finger.

The Swedes were right: there's no such thing as weather being to bad

Our bedroom is in the attic. So when it rains, I can réálly hear it from the warm comfort of my bed.

And as I lie there listening to the rain offering a dramatic drum performance, I can't help but think:

'Maybe I should skip my run today. It's raining very hard. I'll get soaked through and through if I go for my run.'

It's a familiar thought, that visits me quite often.

It dresses up in different forms. Sometimes it sounds like a loving granny telling me that it's alright to skip my run. Because in the end experience has taught me that I'm better off just doing my daily run. Even if it's raining cats and dogs.

It doesn't really matter.

You just have to dress for the occassion.

Like the Swedes tell you!

Don't miss any of my posts! Hence the name 'power song'!

So it only makes sense that a power song can come in quite useful during a run. If you're using the Nike+ iPod Sensor you can even program a Power Song to start playing in your hour of need. You know, that moment when all you want to do is stop running? Your power song is only one push on a little button away. And if it's a good power song, it will make you want to start moving again.

My favoriete power song

Mijn favorite power song is 'Is this the way to Amarillo?' But I also like Emmylou Harris's song 'I was born to run'. Whenever I hear it during a run, I feel I'm an embarassment to the song if I don't run. You can't be listening to 'I was born to run' and just wander about! So that always gets me running again.

My favourite part of this power song is: 'I was born to be fast, I was born to run.' I know the first few words are a big fat lie when it comes to my running prowess, but I don't care. It makes me wanna run!

Power Song: use the power of music

The power of a power songs lies in the power of music. Research has shown that music has a powerful effect on running. Here are some of the results:

Music makes you faster

Running while listening to music is easier than running without music. Because music takes your mind off of your left brain's messages: 'Why are you running! Stop! For the love of God!'

Happy music makes you feel better, and that makes running feel better. So don't you go listening to Mozarts requiem during a run!

It wouldn't be fair nót to admit running while listening to music also has some drawbacks. You're less aware of your body and surroundings, while listening to music. So the great advantage of running with music, is also the big drawback. It all depends on your perspective.

Power Song: not every runner's cup of tea

Power songs do not have a powerful effect on all runners! It depends on the kind of runner you are. Associative runners won't benefit from a power song. They focus on their body. Music would only get in the way of that. But your average runner is a disassociative runner, and uses music to distract and motivate herself.

What's your power song? What song compells you to move?!

The mother that could

Thanks to several training programmes, by John 'the penguin' Bingham and Jeff Galloway, I can now run at least 45 minutes at a time.

And on Sundays I even run for two hours to a local restaurant where I can get a cup of coffee. And then I turn back home.

It takes 45 minutes to run for 45 minutes!

But now here's the thing: it takes at least 45 minutes to run 45 minutes! And because my inner running snob feels she's too good for a thirty minute run, one day I almost didn't run at all.

I was lying on the couch, bored and busy talking to myself:

'Thirty minutes isn't worth the trouble, so I won't go. It's not my fault we had people over all day, is it? If there'd been time I wóúld have run to Westendorp, really I would have! Besides: now I'm too tired. Are there any chips left?'

It's the left side of your brain talking! Ignore it!

In his book You can do it, Jeff Galloway says these kind of thoughts come from the left side of the brain. The left side of the brain is afraid to exert itself, and prefers to lie around on the couch with a big bag of chips.

The left side of the brain reminds me of me.

I think I can, I think I can!

But while I lay there going nowhere, I felt myself getting more and more depressed. So when my left side of the brain wasn't looking I quickly jumped up and ran out the door. I huffed and I puffed and I felt like I was walking through the children's playdough, but I was doing it! It's much more interesting, and I don't get to take it very often. The first two miles, it was just fine, and I could run to my heart's desire. But then suddenly it turned into an ice rink, and I had no choice but to stop running, and make my way gingerly across the ice.

No matter how carefully I put my feet down, they kept slipping away.

'I knew it! I should have taken the bike path!' I grumbled to myself.

'The bike path is the road much traveled, and I would have been able to run, instead of shuffle!'

Then I realized something

But then I realized: the road less taken, may not be the easiest, but that doesn't mean it's not worth it! And I felt my anger and frustration melt away, as I made friends with the icy streets. I adjusted my footsteps to the slippery snow, and told myself: 'Even though this road isn't what I wanted, I'm going to let it tell me how to travel on it.'

And as I arrived at my parents house I felt this great joy about the road less traveled.

It was so worth it!

I have so many layers

With the temperatures seasonally cold I found myself faced with a whole new challenge:

How to dress for succesfully staying warm?

In previous years I addressed this issue by staying on the couch, but this year I no longer will be deterred by a bit of frostbite.

I'm a runner hear me roar!

It's all about layering

Looking around the internet the answer was obvious: layering. To keep warm during wintry temperatures you gotta layer yourself. So that's what I did.

First I put on a little vest, followed by a t-shirt, followed by a long sleeved top, followed by a sweater. And I finished the look with my windbreaker that I bought at the Aldi for only 2 dollars.

Just thinking about all the money I saved there made me feel all warm and fuzzy. And to top it off I put a hat on top of me. I looked like I'd gained several ounces.

But I wasn't cold!

I'm actually feeling kind of hot. And not in a good way

To be honest, after about half a mile I felt decidedly hot. So I hiked my sweater up around my bosom finally looking like the buxom woman I would have been if only my breasts were bigger. After a succesful, quite heated run, I came home telling my husband: 'I have soo many layers!' to which he replied: 'Yes you do honey. You're really deep.'

The best kind of Christmas has a run in it!

Don't miss any of my posts! So I decided to bundle up my nerves and take them for a run, thereby releasing them and getting a nice cup of coffee as an added bonus. I couldn't have picked a better day: the sky was a bright blue and the sun was shining. I felt like any minute the Teletubbies might pop up.
Running in bitesized bits

Lately I've been dividing my runs into neat 10 minute size bits, and then taking a 1 minute walking break. It's something to look forward to and I believe it really helps to prevent muscle soreness and all that.

Also, to be frank, I need the break.

After I finished my 10 miles, during which I told my nerves to take a hike, which they finally did around mile 8, I felt much better. Not quite so nervous. There's only so much running those nerves can take, you know. Around mile 8 they were begging: 'We give in, we give in!'

Running really calms the nerves

The rest of the Sunday afternoon I lay on the couch reading 'Got your back' about a wife and mistress taking revenge on a two-timing husband.

All the while basking in the fact that I had done good: I'd run 10 miles and I had taught my nerves a much deserved lesson.

Christmas music to run to

Christmas songs are perhaps not the first thing that pop into your mind when you think about running music! But there are some out there, that really make you want to move!

My Christmas favourite is Grandma got run over by a reindeer, because it always makes me smile!
