I seriously can’t believe my last published post was in August. Actually, yes I can cause I mean, this past year in the pandemic has been a bit hectic. Amiright?! What I really can’t believe is that we have surpassed ONE entire year in a lockdown! So many people have lost loved ones, know people who have, or are just struggling mentally, physically, or financially. I’ve chatted with so many moms who have been overwhelmed with virtual schooling, or just juggling parenting in a pandemic. And if you fit into any of these categories, know you are not alone and I send prayers and virtual hugs your way. One year ago. during the first weekend in March, I met up with some Disney blogger friends in Las Vegas. Never in a million years did I think that things would spiral out of control as quickly as they did. But here we are, one year later. So much has happened in the last 12 months. Here are a few highlights: These are not necessarily in any particular order. I did several media interviews centered around homeschooling (here’s one I did with Fox 5) I turned 40 in April 2020 🎉 (check […]

This post is sponsored by Connections Academy. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. Some states have already decided how they will execute school openings this fall. Some have already executed on them and have opened (like the state of Georgia). Many parents who were forced into homeschooling due to the pandemic, are now frantically trying to figure out what to do with their child(ren) come fall. I know because several have reached out to me to help them figure out a good game plan. And while I don’t have all the answers, I am super excited to continue sharing resources that will help other parents in the same predicament. This is why I have decided to collaborate with Connections Academy. The best part? Connections Academy schools are tuition-free online public schools for students in grades K–12. Yup, you read that right: tuition-free. The other best part? Not only does Connections Academy have a first-class curriculum, but their professional teachers work with students and parents one-on-one. Whether your child is struggling or gifted, they are there to help. Why Connections Academy? As if what I already shared wasn’t enough, I wanted to give you some additional reasons to […]

So here we are…still (at least some of us) in quarantine mode for the most part. We are still trying to find ways to keep the kids busy, and find things that we can do togther at home. Watching new Netflix Family shows is one of those things. When I got wind last year that Netflix was creating a series for The Baby-Sitters Club, I immediately got excited! I am pretty sure there wasn’t one book in the series that I didn’t read as a kid. I tweeted this on March 1, 2019 in response to Netflix Family’s announcement: Just showed this to my @livybellesews who just got introduced to the series and is just as geeked about this as I am @seewhatsnext ☺️😄🎉 #readallthebooks pic.twitter.com/4avn68B9Fh — Moms ‘N Charge® (@MomsNCharge) March 1, 2019 Reliving The Baby-Sitters Club Growing up as the youngest of 5 girls and the 6th child of 7, these books allowed me to escape to fun and exciting adventures!
Well, here we are. Almost 5 years to the date, and I am writing another open letter to my young brown children, The first one was written June 10, 2015. I haven’t been writing because I haven’t been able to find the words. But I owe it to my children to share what I can so that they are able to stand in their own power. I saw this tweet from Luvvie earlier, and it gave me pause. It explained what so many of us are feeling right now. Yes, we have hope. Yes, we meditate, pray, go to therapy and other things to deal with the anxiety. But sometimes, we just feel like we are constantly gasping for air. I don’t know how we catch our breaths in a world that punches us in the chest as we’re already gasping for air. — Luvvie is writing book 2 (@Luvvie) June 15, 2020 This is why I needed to sit down and breathe. And then put these thoughts into words. It’s never easy, but my hope is that when they are feeling defeated, these words can give them power and motivate them. They’re no longer “little”, but now young amazing […]

Running MomsNCharge.com for the last 8 years has definitely helped me learn several things about how to leverage the power of social media for business. So much so, I started Purpose Driven Media Group to help other entrepreneurs navigate the ever-changing waters known as social media. This is why I’m holding a FREE Live Online Challenge called the 5-Day Boost Your Brand on Social Media Challenge. Why this social media challenge? I want to help transform your business from where it is today to the brand and business that you’ve always wanted it to be. It’s possible and the shift begins with this FREE challenge! It is designed to help you develop a purpose-driven social media strategy to clearly communicate your brand’s value. I’ve been working on this for some time now and I’m excited to see the impact that it’s going to have on the purpose-driven business owner that shows up. It’s going to be good, so you need to carve out the time on your calendar now and make sure that you show up. It’s time to be intentional Over […]

Happy Friday (and Good Friday at that) y’all! So listen, one thing I refuse to be when this quarantine situation is all over and done with, is 20-30 pounds heavier. So when I saw my girl, Krystal Taylor (Fitness is NOT a Game) taking her workouts to Facebook live, I just knew we had to do a mommy and me quarantine workout. Ok, so it sounded much better than it felt (and probably looked) 😰 Quarantine Workout One of the things I committed to doing more of during this lent season is to work out at least three times a week. Granted I fell off a couple of times but this is the most committed I’ve ever been to working out. We are all forced to stay indoors for awhile. Why not make this an opportunity to take care of our bodies in the process. The plus? We get to do it with our children watching us. Hubby works out with the kiddos almost every day. We are definitely trying to keep our little gymnast in shape as much as possible. With her siblings used to taking martial arts 3 times a week, we’ve been working on keeping them fit […]

I think everyone is going a little stir crazy right now! It’s Spring and we all have cabin fever. This is why I’m sharing these 6 old school games to play with your kids that also teach (you know, since we are ALL homeschoolers now 🤯). I’m hearing so many parents beating themselves up these days because they don’t feel like they have it “together” to give them what they need to learn at home. Listen: YOU got this! Trust me, you do! And if you need a break, these are great games to keep your kids busy too! As I mentioned in previous posts, our kids are 8, 10 and 12 and we’ve been on this homeschool journey for 7 years now. My niece who is in her third year of homeschooling has been with us for the last few weeks too. However, nothing could prepare us for the journey that we are ALL on together, right now. This “new normal” is forcing even us to find ways to be creative, make things fun and dig into our archives. I’m hoping this will help bring your family closer and put a huge smile on your faces. Time is precious. […]

And just like that, our very existence has shifted. Learning how to juggle work plus quarantine and homeschool life can be a challenge. Teleworking has become the norm instead of an occasional relief from our traffic-ridden morning commutes (for those who typically work outside of the home). And now we all understand why they say teachers (and stay-at-home moms) are so underpaid, right?! 🤣 As an entrepreneur, blogger, and mom to 3 active, homeschooled children (ages 8, 10 and 12) I know all too well how difficult it is to adjust to your new normal. But being 7 years into this, I can tell you it WILL get better and you can actually learn to enjoy the work freedom and extra time with your children. It just takes a little planning and the ability to let go of the way you think things should be and allow it to flow a bit. Here are 4 quick tips I found helpful when I made the shift from working outside of the home to being a homeschooling entrepreneur/work-from-home mom: 1. Let go of the need to be perfect. While the structure is very important, trying to map out every second of every day […]

So much is happening in the news and with the coronavirus, people are being forced indoors. And as I mentioned in my post yesterday, so many changes happening including parents being forced into homeschooling. But today I wanted to focus on the entrepreneurs who are walking on eggshells right now when it comes to their small business and coronavirus. While the work from home life may not be new to a lot of us, the fear of the unknown for our businesses may have started to seep in a bit. For us as small business owners and content creators, it is important we make a critical mind shift to begin to think about how all of this time indoors can be flipped into a positive – a ripe opportunity for us to connect with our clients in new, exciting and value-added ways. Here are a few ideas to get you started: 1. 💻 Host a webinar. Run a coaching or personal development business? Compliant with all “social distancing” guidelines, a webinar is a great way to get a bunch of people together to educate or inform them on a topic in your area of expertise. Within a matter of days, the Coronavirus pandemic has shut down schools and businesses across the country. And unfortunately, it is only just beginning here in the US. As a homeschooling mom, I know the anxiety that many parents are feeling around the country and parts of the world with being forced into homeschooling. We started homeschooling when our son (the oldest of 3) was going into kindergarten. We were clueless and just trying to navigate these new waters as we went. So trust me I understand how you’re feeling. A while back I shared 10 tips for families considering homeschooling. The long-awaited sequel of “Frozen” is out in theaters nationwide this weekend! “Frozen,” which opened in 2013, is the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The film also won an Academy Award® for the best-animated feature film of the year. These are pretty big shoes to fill. Did Disney fill them? Well, you’ll have to be the judge of that! We were gifted advance tickets to see an early screening of the film on Monday, and it was delightful! To think, Brielle was only 2, Olivia was 4 and Jr was 6 when the film first came out! It definitely put things into perspective to realize how long it’s been, yet it feels like it was just out yesterday. Let’s face it, there are probably little to no one you know who doesn’t automatically start singing “Let it go” anytime those three words are uttered. What does Frozen 2 Uncover? There were definitely some unanswered questions after Frozen. And I definitely think that Frozen 2 set out to answer them all (and I sure hope it won’t be another 6 years before the next one). Why was Elsa born with magical powers? What truths about […]

Today we get the inside scoop with Thomas Mann (“Jim Dear”) and Adrian Martinez (“Elliot the Dog Catcher”). I don’t know about you, but I am counting down to next week’s premiere of Disney Plus! That means we will finally get to watch Lady and The Tramp. All week, I’ve been sharing exclusive interviews and behind the scenes from my set visit last year. Yup, I was part of an intimate group of bloggers who were invited down to Savannah, Georgia. We spent a couple of days touring the set for Lady and the Tramp and chatting it up with the stars of the film. You can catch up on those posts here, here and here. Two more people we got to sit down with here Adrian Martinez and Thomas Mann. Below are some of the highlights from both interviews. Adrian Mann AKA “Elliott the Dog Catcher” interview highlights This was definitely a fun interview because he has a really funny person. We only had a few minutes to sit down with him, but here are a few quick highlights from our chat: He loves dogs so working with 6 main ones (3 Lady […]

I’m back! And today I’m sharing one of my favorite parts about the secret set visit last year. If you missed my first post, you can check it out here. And yesterday I shared our fun interview with “Aunt Sarah” and “Darling” from Lady and the Tramp. So be sure to catch up on those. Today is allllll about meeting and hanging out on set with Rose and Monty. These dogs were as cute and personable in person as they are on screen. We got to chat with the Head Animal Trainer, Mark Forbes on what it took to get them and train them for the film. So I’m sharing 5 fun facts about training Lady and the Tramp. Fact #1: Monty was adopted from a photo online So Mark shared that he was basically cast from a simple picture that had been posted online. The flew out to check out his temperament and he was great! They immediately adopted him. But they didn’t know much about what his life was like before the scooped him up. According to Mark, they are not sure if he was someone’s pet that ran away or if he started out on the streets. […]

A few weeks back I shared just a few lessons learned at this year’s Social Media on the Sand. There were so many takeaways, and I will continue to share more here on the blog. During the course of the conference, we had the opportunity to attend various sessions. One of the sessions I attended was “Collaboration Not Competition with Today’s Top YouTubers!” I went in really because my daughter, Olivia had been asking me for a YouTube channel for a long time. But with our hectic schedules, I just couldn’t see past the “work” of getting it up and running. And the funny thing is that I wouldn’t be the one creating any of the content for the channel. Partly because I’m too busy. But mostly because I don’t even know how to edit video. 😆 Adventures of Livy and Bri YouTube Channel And so Adventures of Livy and Bri was born. The girls will be sharing their lives through video content. We may create a separate channel for Brielle’s gymnastics adventures. But right now, you may just see everything on their channel. We kicked it off with a trip to Target because as I mention in this previous […]

We kicked off the conversation with Yvette Nicole Brown (who plays “Aunt Sarah) and Kiersey Clemons (who plays “Darling”), sharing their love of dogs. Yvette shared that this is her biggest acting job because she loves dogs so much, but of course, she has to be so hateful. They also were real about how tight and uncomfortable to corsets they had to wear really were. 😆 These two ladies were so much fun and easy to talk to. They claimed they were just “winging it” when it came to playing the characters for their respective roles. But we saw them in action on set. They are the real deal. I seriously can’t wait to watch it when it launches on Disney Plus next week. If you missed my post about this exciting secret trip, check it out here. Yvette Nicole Brown On Improvising and Sisterhood Yvette shared that it’s so much easier when you have fun actors to play off of. She shared how she appreciated how open Director Charlie was.
If anyone ever wondered about my ability to keep a secret, you can rest assured your secret is safe with me. For the last year, I’ve been holding on to this super-secret set visit for the live-action Lady and the Tramp, streaming to Disney + on November 12th. Yup, I was on set and got to hang out with the cast and crew…including Rose (“Lady”) and Monty (“Tramp”) themselves (more on that later). I now treasure my DVD and Tony’s restaurant painting I did on another trip even more! About Disney+ So let me take a step back and fill you in on what Disney+ is in case you’ve been hiding under life’s rocks. Disney+ is launching next week, November 12th. It will be the dedicated streaming home for movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and more, together, for the first time. One major perk I love is that Disney+ will offer ad-free programming with a variety of original feature-length films, documentaries, live-action and animated series and short-form content. This includes the series “The Mandalorian,” “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” “The World According to Jeff Goldblum,” and “Encore!” and films “Lady and the Tramp” and […]

I have been fortunate to meet, connect and build relationships with some extraordinary people! A while ago I shared about Gabby Bows – the patented double-snap, double-face barrette. Gabby Bows (now Confidence by Gabby) was started by a 6 year-old girl and her mom all from a simple Twitter rant about lost bows. What started off as a rant, turned into an idea, which then turned into a dope brand. We have been fans and customers ever since learning about these magical bows back in 2015.
This time last week I had just gotten to the breathtaking island of Turks and Caicos. The 5th annual Beaches Social Media on the Sand took place and this was my third time attending. And while this was my first time attending without my family, this was probably my most memorable one in terms of content. Maybe it’s because I’m at a place where I’m a lot hungrier for answers and insight. Maybe it’s because I didn’t have to focus on anyone but myself. At any rate, I got so many awesomely amazing nuggets from this year’s conference. I almost didn’t attend, but God knew what I needed. And I’m so happy that I made it! Any time I have the opportunity to learn more about the everchanging world of social media, I hop on it! And when it’s in a tropical location like Beaches? It’s a must!
It’s that time of year again! The Disney Dreamers Academy application will be closing soon (deadline to apply is October 31st). And since I covered this event for the 4th year in a row back in March, I wanted to share how Disney is Inspiring Dreamers through Technology. If you’ve ever wondered what it might look like to have a Technology career at Disney, then stay tuned. A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing two Engineering managers, one of them being Angel Price. Engineering and Disney go together highlights what types of careers are available to Engineers and how the STEAM field altogether is possible at Walt Disney World. Fast forward to this past March 2019, I got to sit in on the Technology Deep Dive lead by D’Yanna Craighead. She is a Technology Manager at Walt Disney World. I was blown away with what these high school students were learning and how they were learning. So I knew I had to interview their fearless leader, D’Yanna! I promise this interview will inspire you to dig deeper and dream bigger! What inspired you to go into the Technology field? I’ve always been inquisitive and analytical. Therefore, […]

And I also launched my very first summit the day after returning from the retreat! I then attended Plaid St Conference in Virginia (formally Type A), Shift Con in Atlanta, just got back from my Mastermind meeting in Atlanta, and leave Wednesday for Beaches Social Media on the Sand. So this is how I’ve been feeling since the Motivated Mom Retreat… But so happy to finally share some of my favorite moments! Last year, I had the honor and privilege to co-host the first annual Motivated Mom Retreat with my girl, LaToyia Dennis of the Motivated Mom. When we first spoke about her vision for this retreat, we immediately clicked. Our brand missions align and we both know the value of self-care and empowering moms. We understand that in order to be the incredible moms that God created us to be, we need to take time out to love on ourselves and to heal ourselves. We have been long lost sisters every since we met at Disney Social Media […]

Hey y’all hey!!!! This journey of motherhood and running a blog and social media agency has got me all types of busy but in a good way! As a result I have sooo much to share on what I’ve been up to. If you follow me on social media, then you may have already seen some things 😉 But if you don’t, let me catch you up right now! What is the Social Scoop Summit? A few years ago, I had the idea to put together a social media summit for small business owners. This year I finally decided to put my thoughts and ideas into action. I was hoping to get 15-20 experts to interview and ended up with 25+ 😱. And these aren’t just any experts. These entrepreneurs have grown 6 and 7-figure businesses using the power of social media and digital marketing. I wanted to get the scoop from different people across various types of businesses on what impact social media has had on their businesses. As a result of sharing this content, my hope was to transform other businesses in the process. See, I am so clear that “we can go fast alone or far together”. On Saturday Naomi Osaka and Cori “Coco” Gauff Competed in the US Open. But it was what happened after the match that gave everyone pause. It touched my heart so much that I just had to not only share on my Facebook page but also write about it here. We should all be concerned about the people we are raising. About Naomi and Coco Venus and Serena Williams paved the way for women like Naomi and Coco to do what they are doing now. They are Tennis royalty right now. Due to the incredible skills, they have shown on the courts, all eyes are on them. Coco is a former World No. 1 Junior. She was the runner-up in the girls’ singles event at the 2017 US Open, making her the youngest finalist at the event in the tournament’s history. At just 15 years old, she has been making history! Naomi Osaka is currently ranked No. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association.
It’s that time of year where we are inundated with back-to-school shopping. For many parts of the country, kids have already gone back to school. But here in Maryland, we still have until after Labor Day before school is officially in session. That is unless you’re a homeschool mom like me. We homeschool moms are here too, just on a slightly different schedule. Homeschool moms It’s been a while since I’ve written about my homeschool journey. Mainly because…life. I’m always asked, “Are you still homeschooling?” The answer is yes. The next question is usually, “How long do you plan to homeschool?” And my answer is always, “as long as we can.” Now that our oldest is officially a middle schooler, I have mixed emotions because that means that he is halfway done with school until college (if he chooses to go). There is no way we would’ve lasted this long without the continuous support from other homeschool families both on and offline. For instance, we’ve made some great friends who have become like family through homeschool co-ops. Meanwhile, I can always count on various Facebook groups for a good laugh when things get stressful. It’s groups like these that confirm […]

It’s that time of year! Summer breaks are winding down and many have already gotten their kids back to school. In addition, we are trying to get back to a “normal” schedule. As a homeschool mom, we are also currently planning curriculum and activities for the year. How are YOU feeling? Chances are, you might already be feeling like you need a break. And that’s exactly what the Motivated Mom Retreat experience is all about! This blog started off as a safe space for moms like you to feel inspired and empowered to take time out for themselves (without the mom guilt). I needed the reminders myself! This is why I was THRILLED to partner with my girl, LaToyia Dennis on the Motivated Moms Retreat last year. It was incredible and we had a blast! Consequently, we’re doing it again next month in Dallas, Texas! Motivated Mom Retreat What is the Motivated Moms Retreat?! It is the ultimate motherhood experience where you will get pampered, supported, motivated and rejuvenated. Let’s face it: motherhood is a life-long ministry. And we can’t thrive if we can’t keep up with the demands that come with the job. However, when given the right tools […]

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock or just trying keep from melting in this summer heat, you have to have heard by now about The Gift Album. What is The Gift album you ask? It is a love letter from Beyoncé, a special Afrobeats album in honor of The Lion King. Ok, it’s not particularly Afrobeats, but it might as well be. Lion King: The Gift – Music for a new generation: If you missed my review on the new live-action out in theaters this weekend, you can catch it here. Let’s be clear: The Gift Album does not replace the official Lion King soundtrack album. It simply compliments it. We basically get a second album for the price of one film. And it is magical noir pixie dust in a cool 54 minutes. But here is what this album means especially for people like me because being African was not always cool. What Luvvie shared on her Instagram page is beyond accurate: “This is a love letter to the diaspora. It wasn’t always cool to be African. Many of us changed our names, ditched our accents, so we could fit in at school. This album, they’re speaking Yoruba. […]

As far as I’m concerned, it is Lion King month. I remember sitting in D23 Expo 2017 when they announced they had begun working on the live action version of the film. They then proceeded to show us a small clip of young Simba. The entire room gasped. It was unbelievable. Fast forward to today and the countdown is officially on. With the world premiere that took place in LA on Tuesday night, it was truly a star-studded event! The timing was not on my side to be there up close and personal. But my friends, Ari at Love Peace Mommy and Tatanisha at This Worthey Life were. So be sure to check out their coverage from the premiere. The Lion King Live Action will be opening in theaters nationwide next week, July 19th. And last night, I got to take my daughter Olivia, on a date to see an advance screening of the film. It was fun to bump into our friends and see some bloggers I haven’t seen in a long time. The results of a professional selfie taker… The Lion King is a Classic First of all, who doesn’t love the original film?! There are so many […]

Y’all!!! In my 7+ years of blogging, I have never been this sporadic. I’ve had a few people to reach out to make sure I’m ok and for that I’m grateful. We’ve gone from 2-3 posts/week to being lucky if we get that in a month. So I thought now would be a good time for a little life update. Ever since I’ve been battling my issues with dyshidrotic eczema, typing has been a battle. And while I’ve found products that have helped me manage it much better, it’s still a battle. When the flare-up is bad, I have very little use of my hands. So obviously that means I’m not typing as much. There is so much content I have been wanting to share and have had in draft mode but just haven’t been able to finish editing it/posting it. I’m working on it though! And I hope to get back to regularly scheduled posts soon 😁 On top of that, there’s been other life changes and challenges I’ve been working through. What I’ve learned is that life keeps going even when life gets hard. And judging by various timelines across social media, there are a lot of people […]

Disclosure: We loved our second experience and photoshoot so much that we paid a good penny for a portion of over 200 pics taken. But they weren’t enough. So in exchange for sharing my experience, Beaches Resorts gifted us a bunch of additional shots which we greatly appreciated. Family Instagram Photos to Take at The Beach #BeachesMoms Who doesn’t love a beautiful family Instagram photo?! It’s no secret that I love taking family photos. We take them every year and it’s amazing to see how much the kids have grown from one year to the next. I’m a huge fan of the photoshoots because as I’ve shared before, I don’t have many photos of me growing up as a kid. It’s gotten to the point that I usually create a “must-have” shot list for the photoshoots. That way, I can make sure that we get as many variations as needed. With both of my daughters now having Instagram accounts (you can follow them @BrielleFlips and @LivyBelleSews), we need as many photos as possible family Instagram photos are definitely needed.
According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 59 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is almost impossible to NOT know someone (or be that someone) who has a child affected by autism. It’s why Autism awareness is so important. Supporting Autism Families at Beaches Resorts Last October, I was in Turks and Caicos for the Beaches Social Media on the Sand Conference. I got to sit in on a session where we learned more about all they are doing to create a safe environment for kids and families with autism. Check out this post by my friend LaToyia of the Motivated Mom on how Beaches is going above and beyond for autism families. I met an amazing friend and woman, Dr. Ali Griffith years ago. She’s actually written several great posts around parenting a child on the spectrum (you can read them here, here and here or search “autism” on the blog). In fact, Dr. Ali wrote a post when Julia first appeared on Sesame Street, and shared why she was excited about it. You can read it here. FYI: Sesame Place is the first theme park in the world to be designated as a Certified Autism Center! […]
