Cuts to Child Care – Breaking Hearts and Pocketbooks

The child care bills are too damn high! Last year, MomsRising member Callie in Bothell paid a shocking $60,421 for child care – and that is sadly all too common. That math isn’t math-ing in this economy.

Washington lawmakers are sitting down and considering massive budget cuts to our state’s child care and early learning programs while families are making very difficult budget decisions at our own kitchen tables.

How much per month do you pay for child care or after-school care?

CLICK HERE to quickly input the amount so we can show our lawmakers the *real* sticker shock of our child care costs!

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, the MomsRising team here in Washington State is planning to deliver your child care receipts, along with those of hundreds of other families across the state, directly to lawmakers in Olympia with a clear message: Cuts to Child Care Are Breaking our Hearts and Pocketbooks. STOP the Cuts!

Why do they need to see our child care receipts in Olympia right now? As Washington faces a budget crisis, lawmakers are considering budget cuts that would roll back decades of progress on child care, making it harder for ALL families to afford child care, whether you receive a subsidy or not.

Right now, the Governor’s budget proposal includes $322,000,000.00 (yes, $332 MILLION) in cuts to child care and early learning. Taken altogether, the Governor and state legislators are considering a budget measure that would amount to early learning shouldering 40% of the budget cuts when early learning takes up just 1% of our total state budget!

When the state cuts investments to child care, it’s parents and providers who have to foot the bill for the difference.

Enter your monthly child care costs here and we’ll deliver the receipt to your state lawmakers!

Let’s be real: Chocolate and flowers for Valentine’s Day are nice, but child care would be even sweeter.

Families like yours and mine have the receipts: the cost for child care is too damn high and we need our state to protect investments in child care, not make deep cuts into the budgets of real, hardworking families across our state.

Help us show Washington State legislators the (child care) receipts and tell them how much child care costs your family each month.
*** We’ll put all the numbers together on one giant, long receipt to show legislators in Olympia just how much families are paying and how much is at stake this budget season! And, don’t worry, your personal information will not be shared!

It’s time for legislators, who work on behalf of all of us, to understand the kitchen table budget decisions real Washingtonians are facing as we juggle housing, food, transportation, and healthcare costs ON TOP of heart-and-budget breaking child care costs.

CLICK HERE to ensure our state lawmakers know that Cuts to Child Care are Breaking our Hearts and Pocketbooks. STOP the cuts!

They can’t hide from the real numbers. Balancing the state budget on the backs of children and families is no longer an option.

There's never been a better time for a Millionaires Tax!

This week, a meaningful opportunity for Washington State to fix its inequitable tax code and stabilize our state’s overall health was introduced in the legislature.

The Millionaires Tax Proposal (HB 2725/SB 6346) is officially live! CLICK HERE to quickly and easily let your lawmakers know you support fairly taxing households with annual earnings of $1 million+.

As you've heard from us before, Washington State is in a major budget crisis and families are bearing the brunt of it. Our state budget lacks the resources to adequately fund child care, early learning, K12, health care, and other essential family programs because our tax code is upside down. This means working families pay a higher share of their income in state and local taxes than the wealthiest few.

This year alone, the Governor has proposed $322,000,000.00 (yes, $332 million) in cuts to child care and early learning. In fact, 40% of his total proposed cuts were *just* to child care. If the legislature approves these cuts, child care affordability and access for everyone will be undercut – those who pay in full and those who utilize subsidies. At the same time, our state is reeling from additional cuts to federal food assistance, health care, and other essential programs made by President Trump over the summer in his Big, Ugly Budget Bill.

There's never been a better time for Washington State lawmakers to pass a Millionaires Tax!

This Millionaires Tax (HB 2725/SB 6346) will be a major structural shift in the direction of fairness and tax justice. It asks millionaires to pay a little more while simultaneously expanding the state’s earned income tax credit, doubling tax exemption for small businesses, and removing sales tax on essential items. It’s a win-win-win. It will bring more sustainable revenues to our state resources in the future, making us less reliant on regressive taxes like the sales and property tax.

Here’s how it would work: The Legislature can enact a 10% tax on households earning above $1 million on an annual basis. By taxing just 20,000 of the wealthiest people in Washington (only 0.005% of the state’s working population), we can bring in nearly $3.5 billion a year in new revenue for good schools, affordable health care, housing, and nutrition.

Make sure your state lawmakers know that you want them to champion new, progressive revenue, like this Millionaires Tax!

Across the state, parents, educators, caregivers, and more are currently being left by inequitable systems to decide between health care and groceries, child care or rent. Hungry students are licking their plates clean, child care centers are closing, and hospitals are at risk of closure. Families are stretched thin, yes we're still the ones to foot the bill of these failing systems.

We need a bold solution that meets the scale and the urgency of the challenges we’re facing. Instead of continuing to rip away safety nets for kids and families, we can bring in fair, reliable new revenue that strengthens our collective health and stability and ensures families have the support they need for the long run. It’s time to pass a millionaires tax and ensure the wealthy few pitch in their fair share to our communities!

Are you with us? Add your name!

We came together to pass the capital gains tax in 2021, and we’re coming together again to ensure the wealthiest in our state contribute what they truly owe to our shared prosperity and social contract. We certainly have public opinion on our side, as the vast majority of Washingtonians support this tax proposal to fund essential programs, and they want the wealthy to pay more of their share.

So what do you say? Let’s get this Millionaires Tax across the finish line. The more people who speak out, the bigger our impact. Please take a moment to share our action link with your friends and family.

From our hearts to yours, thank you for raising your voice to protect our collective health and wellbeing, now and into the future.

Slash Billionaire Greed, Not Our Child Care!

The math is not math-ing! Governor Ferguson’s budget proposal balances our state’s budget deficit by disproportionately targeting child care and early learning with devastating funding slashes.

Why should our littlest learners shoulder 40% of the state’s total budget cuts?! It’s unconscionable.

CLICK HERE to tell your state legislators to protect kids and families in their budgeting!

Together, our voices can ensure our legislators in the Washington State House and Senate do NOT follow Governor Ferguson’s upside-down equation that balances the state budget by axing child care subsidies for 14,000 families.

The House and the Senate typically use the governor’s budget as a starting point, but we want them to take a very different approach. Now is the critical moment to raise our voices!

QUICK SIGNATURE: Urge your district’s lawmakers in the House and Senate to balance the state budget equitably—and not disproportionately with cuts to child care and early learning!

Right now, the Governor’s budget includes $322,000,000.00 (yes, $332 million) in cuts to child care and early learning. Whether you receive a child care subsidy or not—this would be devastating to our families and communities. When the state cuts investments to child care, it’s parents and providers who have to foot the bill for the difference. Child care providers would feel the impact directly too, with a 50 percent reduction in professional development for child care providers on the line. The continually growing child care crisis will take a $6 billion hit on the state’s economy each year if the Governor’s version of the budget were passed.

That’s why we’re not going to let these cuts happen! Navigating budget shortfalls is a hefty task—but the solution isn’t to balance the budget on the backs of children and families. We have other options available to us, and the scale of the challenges facing Washington families demands that our Governor and state legislature utilize every tool we have to protect child care and early learning investments.

Instead of ripping away safety nets for kids and families, we can equitably tax the very wealthy and create new, progressive revenue for our state that will balance our state budget for years to come. Parents and caregivers can’t work if child care isn’t working for them, so it’s essential to safeguard the programs that we know help working families and children across the state thrive.

Tell the Washington State House and Senate: Don’t follow Governor Ferguson’s bad budget! Protect child care funding by balancing the budget with new, progressive revenue!

Child care cuts will only worsen the affordability crisis in our state. These proposed cuts come at the same time as the federal government threatens additional funding cuts and cruel immigration enforcement. The child care programs that kids and families depend on are in a fight to survive, while many of our families are already scrambling to balance our own household budgets.

It’s time to equitably tax the very wealthy individuals in Washington State that aren’t currently contributing their fair share to the health of our state budget.

CLICK HERE to urge your WA State legislators to balance the budget with fair taxes, NOT by slashing our kids’ child care and early learning!

Thank you for raising your voice to protect the future of our children and our state. Together, we are a powerful voice for families.

Write a letter to the editor: Tell your U.S. Senators to extend the expiring ACA tax credits!

Take Action!

At last! For months, we have been demanding that Congress take action to protect our health care—but Republican leaders and President Trump have refused to take the health care crisis they’ve created seriously. But thankfully, at the last minute, four House Republicans joined Democrats to force a vote on extending the ACA tax credits, which created a glimmer of hope! That is a big step forward in our fight to protect health care and has been made possible by your tireless and effective work!

Our advocacy has been working! Now’s the time to turn up the heat. Take action by writing a letter to the editor to tell the U.S. Senate: Finish the job—extend the expiring ACA tax credits! *Don’t stress - We’ll make it easy! We’ll give you a draft letter and all the talking points you need!

*We know that lawmakers read their local newspapers when they are back home over the holidays to see what is on the minds of the people in their districts, that’s why it’s critical for you to take action now and submit a letter to the editor to stop the health care heist!

We’re down to the wire here in the fight to lower costs and save health care for millions of Americans. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, which make health care coverage affordable for tens of millions of moms and families, are set to expire at the end of 2025. If they do, millions of families will soon be without health coverage, with dire consequences not just for them but also for our entire health care system and all of us who depend on it.

Time is running out, but it’s not too late! The fact that four House Republicans crossed party lines and joined House Democrats to make sure there is a vote on extending the ACA tax credits shows this fight isn’t over. Republican leaders in the House plan to hold the vote on extending the ACA tax credits in January. That gives us a few weeks to put pressure on the Senate!

Listen, we know it’s the holidays. It’s a busy time of year. AND it is very important that our voices are heard at this moment! We’ll make it easy to take a high-impact action by providing a draft letter and all the talking points you need to send the message.

Write a letter to the editor to tell the Senate: Saving health care for millions is up to you! Extend the expiring ACA tax credits.

Upcoming Conversation with Leader Stacey Abrams: How will we protect our health care? Find out at our Community Meeting on Zoom!

Finally! The longest ever government shutdown in U.S. history is over and we survived it... Barely.

Well, what’s next?

‘Tis the season for open enrollment in health care! The very special (read: anxious) time of year when we’re all choosing health insurance plans and figuring out our premiums. That’s why this upcoming Zoom meeting is a must-attend. We are thrilled to announce that Leader Stacey Abrams will join the call on Thursday, November 20th to break down what the recent changes in health care mean for all of us and how we can come together to fight to protect affordable care.

RSVP now for this critical online convening to protect our health care and our communities!

Yes, the government shutdown has ended, but for many families there is still a lot of financial uncertainty, especially when it comes to their health care. The recent Congressional spending bill did not extend the enhanced health care tax credits that many people (millions!) rely on, leaving them unsure about how to navigate open enrollment. As a result, insurance premium prices are projected to rise (more than double!) for millions and become unaffordable causing people to drop coverage altogether. [1] Too many folks are at risk for losing affordable health care, especially the working-class, immigrant communities, and single-parent households.

At this virtual gathering, you will:

Experience a rare chance to hear directly from Leader Stacey Abrams, who’s been at the forefront of fighting for access to health care and standing up for our communities.

Learn what the expiration of the federal health subsidies could mean for premiums and coverage for millions of families.

Hear from experts and leading advocates about what Congress can do to take immediate action; Connect in community about how to take action and walk away knowing how to get your folks involved.

Find out ways to share your story! Every story strengthens our movement.

**This event will be conducted in English, with simultaneous translation available in Spanish. Find information about this event in Spanish here / Información sobre este evento en español, aquí.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

We have a plan through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that only costs us $168 per month and it's a godsend compared to the $1000+ we were paying. Everyone should have affordable health insurance!” - K, Colorado Mom

Quick signature: Tell Congress to keep health care affordable for millions—make ACA enhanced premium tax credits permanent!

What’s happening? Families are feeling the strain of rising costs—from everyday essentials like groceries and gas, to back-to-school supplies, childcare, and health care. Now, Republicans in Congress are about to pull the rug out from under us yet again by increasing the cost of health coverage for millions if they don’t act quickly.

As we collectively brace for $1 trillion in health care cuts made in the Republicans’ Big, Ugly Budget Bill passed this summer, 24 million people who buy health coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace are at risk of seeing their health premiums soar when the enhanced tax credits expire at the end of 2025. But there’s still time! Congress can make the enhanced premium tax credits permanent in the upcoming funding bill!

SIGN NOW: Congress must act now to make these tax credits permanent!

Here’s why this matters: Millions of people—small business owners, students, early retirees, contractors, and others without workplace coverage—purchase their insurance via the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace. The vast majority of those with health care purchased from the ACA Marketplace receive enhanced premium tax credits, created during the pandemic to expand access by making coverage more affordable. These credits drove the uninsured rate to a historic low and made ACA plans far more affordable—saving the average enrollee $705 in 2024 or 44% of their annual costs!

But if Congress doesn’t act, premiums will spike by about 75%, putting further strain on our families and economy. In fact, about 5 million people will lose health insurance altogether. Which is why it is critical that Congress make these tax credits permanent ASAP.

Add your name! Tell Congress to make the enhanced premium tax credits permanent and bring health care costs down for millions of Americans.

When you click you’ll be able to sign on to our petition that reads:

Dear member of Congress,

Families are paying more for daily essentials—in grocery stores, at gas stations, and on utility bills. On top of this, millions are bracing for the $1 trillion in health care cuts passed this summer. Congress must act NOW to protect families by making enhanced premium tax credits permanent and rolling back harmful cuts to health care in the upcoming funding bill.

The vast majority of the 24 million people who purchase their insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace receive enhanced premium tax credits to make coverage more affordable. This has played a huge role in bringing the uninsured rate to a historic low and made ACA plans more broadly available and affordable.

If Congress allows the enhanced premium tax credits to expire, Marketplace premiums will increase by about 75%, putting further strain on our families and economy. Congress must take action to make the enhanced premium tax credits permanent and roll back cuts to health care to boost our families and economy!

Trump and Republicans in Congress promised to lower costs. Instead, families are paying more for essentials and health care is under attack. Enhanced premium tax credits are critical to affordable coverage, healthy families, and a stronger economy.

Don’t forget to add your name! Congress must act now to make the enhanced premium tax credits permanent and fight back against rising costs!

Tell Robert F. Kennedy Jr. "You're fired!"

Take Action

“I’m horrified and perplexed by the many ways Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has broken with evidence-based scientific practices, putting families’ health at risk. I know all too well these policies can have life-or-death consequences.” - Jean, Maryland Mom

Quick signature: Tell Trump and your U.S. Senators that RFK Jr. should be fired!

What’s happening? Since becoming U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has taken dangerous steps to sow vaccine mistrust and also to take away people’s access to life-saving vaccines. His actions are confusing parents, breaking trust, and creating a vaccine policy mess across states, which is putting public health at risk.

For instance, under Secretary Kennedy’s leadership, HHS has taken a series of reckless actions that promote vaccine misinformation. Just one example is that Kennedy fired the entire panel of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), and replaced them with his personal picks, including some with a history of spreading vaccine misinformation. The new group then held a hearing where it ignored data and analyses presented by the CDC about the safety of the flu vaccine, and instead cited debunked studies to call into doubt flu vaccine safety. The situation is so bad that a top doctor from the American Academy of Pediatrics described the hearing as part of “an orchestrated effort to sow distrust in immunizations and the vaccine approval process.”

THIS IS SO NOT OK! Our families deserve better. Health policy should be guided by science, not personal agendas.

Add your name! Tell Trump and U.S. Senators that RFK Jr. must go!

Unfortunately, it gets worse. Under Secretary Kennedy’s leadership, the new committee also changed the recommendations for the COVID vaccine—again not based on science. For example, the CDC no longer recommends the COVID vaccine during pregnancy, even though research shows it’s safe and helps prevent adverse outcomes, including premature birth or infant deaths. They also stopped recommending the vaccine for most kids, even though it’s proven to safely protect against serious illness.

These changes make it harder for families to get the COVID vaccine, and will increase costs since insurers are no longer required to cover people outside of CDC’s now very narrow non-science-based new recommendations. It also strips families of their choice to vaccinate as these barriers become harder to overcome.

When you click, you’ll be able to sign on to our petition that reads:

Dear President Trump and U.S. Senators,

As parents and caregivers, we depend on strong, science-based health policies to protect our families and communities. Since becoming U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has spread misinformation about the scientific data related to vaccines and weakened access to life-saving immunizations—including for pregnant women and children.

These reckless actions are creating confusion, making it harder for families to get the care they need, and putting lives at risk. Health policy should be guided by science, not personal agendas.

Secretary Kennedy must be removed from his position and replaced with someone who has the necessary qualifications and scientific experience to put our families’ health first!

Sign now to protect your family and others. Tell Trump and your U.S. Senators: Fire RFK Jr. before more harm is done.

On Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Women’s Equal Pay Day: Demand Congress and the Trump administration end the attack.

Pop Quiz: How many additional months in a year do Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) women have to work to earn what white, non-Hispanic men make in one year?

If you said 8 months, you’re sadly correct. It’s unfair, yet true: NHPI women make just 65 cents on the dollar compared to white men, and when you factor in part-time and seasonal work, that number drops down to 61 cents, which is NOT okay.

Today, August 28th, marks Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) Women’s Equal Pay Day and we need you to take action!

→ Sign our letter urging Congress to support policies that help reduce these egregious pay disparities NHPI women face every single day.

Eight extra months is too long to wait to achieve pay equity. Especially since NHPI mothers, who are often pillars in their communities, are holding entire families together and lifting our economy while working more for less. They play significant roles in essential fields that our entire nation benefits from every day. Yet, they’re consistently being denied a livable wage, let alone the compensation they actually deserve. What does that mean for their families, communities, and our economy?

The bottom line: Lower earnings equal fewer resources for childcare and food budgets, less access to housing options, and smaller safety nets or none at all. It also means less economic boost because women and moms make the majority of consumer purchasing decisions in our nation.

→ Sign on and stand in solidarity with Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander women and families who have waited long enough for fair pay and urge Congress to take action.

Something that could help fix this economic dilemma? Data!

That’s because wage fairness begins with being SEEN, counted, and paid what you’re worth.

There currently isn’t any federal tracking that can help us understand the fullest picture of wage disparity in this country. In fact, the data we do have to capture what NHPI women earn is buried under aggregated sources and that alone is failing these communities.

We can no longer lump subgroups like Fijian, Tongan, Marshallese, Chuukese, and Palauan women and moms, who make even less than NHPI women, into the broader Asian American and Pacific Islander category. These tribes have their own cultures, languages, ethics and belief systems that are erased every time that happens. If Congress steps in to support federal tracking policies for NHPI, we would see a real change in data accessibility that could lead to a real change in the pay gap.

The horrific wage gap that NHPI women face is a structural and systemic problem and there are solutions if Congress makes them a priority.

→ Add your name to demand that Congress take action: Support and pass policies that will help provide NHPI women with the tools to achieve economic security.

(By the way, have you or someone you love faced workplace discrimination or unfair pay? Sharing personal stories with our lawmakers is a powerful tool in the fight against discriminatory wage gaps! Tell us about your experience!)

Celebrating National Breastfeeding Month - Forward Together

This August, we Celebrate National Breastfeeding Month: Forward Together

Breastfeeding is about more than nutrition. It is about equity, dignity, and the right to be supported. We celebrate National Breastfeeding Month by lifting up the realities families face and demanding the policies they deserve. Forward Together means building a world where every parent no matter their race, income, or geography, can feed their baby with support and without barriers.

Many moms want to breastfeed, but face challenge after challenge in trying to meet their breastfeeding goals. In fact in the United States, 4 out of 5 mothers start out breastfeeding, but less than half are still breastfeeding at 6 months postpartum.

Why are so many women falling short of meeting their personal breastfeeding goals and recommendations of public health professionals? It's the reasons MomsRising members share with us everyday - the lack of access to paid family and medical leave and lack of lactation support and education.

Right now, 1 in 4 women is back at work within just two weeks of giving birth, not because they want to be, but because they simply can’t afford unpaid time off. That’s before they’ve had a chance to heal, let alone establish breastfeeding routines. When moms encounter challenges breastfeeding, many seek help from lactation professionals. But for low-income women, those supports are often inaccessible and unaffordable, even with limited healthcare coverage.

Now, the threat is even greater!

Cuts to Medicaid and coupled with threats to HHS funding put millions of families at risk of losing critical maternal and postpartum care, including access to lactation support. Medicaid currently covers more than 40% of all births in the U.S. and is a cornerstone of care for low-income families throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond. The impact of these cuts would be especially devastating in rural communities, where Medicaid funding helps keep hospitals, especially labor and delivery units open. Over 35% of U.S. counties have no birthing hospitals, birth centers, or obstetric providers. That means millions of families will be denied basic care.

And let’s be clear: these barriers are not felt equally. Black, Indigenous, and Latinx families face the steepest challenges not because of individual choices, but because of systems rooted in racism, underinvestment, and exclusion from policy decision-making. These inequities compound already dangerous disparities in maternal and infant health.

But There Are Solutions

The good news? We know what works.

Families need paid family and medical leave, access to lactation support, education, and supplies, and fully funded breastfeeding support programs that make it possible to receive support. These aren’t luxuries, they are necessities. They are how we move Forward Together.

Breastfeeding isn’t just good for moms and babies, it’s also good for the economy. If parents were supported in meeting breastfeeding recommendations, it could save the U.S. nearly $13 billion annually in pediatric health costs and preventable deaths.

Join Us This August

Throughout National Breastfeeding Month, MomsRising will lift up the real stories behind the stats. Stories of struggle, joy, resilience, and love. Please join us in celebrating the month with observances each week:

Tell Congress: Put families first!

Save the date so you can join us on July 26th in this mass mobilization. Events are being planned as we speak—and more will be added as we get closer to the 26th!

What’s happening? The Big Bad Betrayal Bill that Republicans passed in Congress and President Trump signed into law will lead to 17 million people losing health insurance and needless suffering, hunger, and higher costs for many of our families and communities. THIS IS NOT OK!

That’s why we're gathering peacefully in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. against the cruel choice to trade our health, safety, and basic needs to make the rich richer. We're going to make sure every one of our friends and neighbors hears about the historic betrayal of everyday families in America—and how Republican leadership in Congress and the White House chose cuts to programs we all need to fund cruel attacks on immigrants and more tax breaks for the rich, undermining the health and safety of all of our families.

Sign up to attend an event near you NOW to fight for our families' health and futures.

People everywhere, in groups of all sizes—from 2 to 200 or more—are meeting up in peaceful marches, rallies, and actions to say: The families of America are watching, and will continue to stand strong for our families, our communities, our economy, and our country.

This is a peaceful, nationwide mobilization organized by a coalition of unions, advocacy groups, faith leaders, and families committed to protecting democracy, dignity, and care. All events are grounded in nonviolence, community safety, and strategic protest.

**Don't see an event in your area? You can sign up to host one, too!
