Right now, the Governor’s budget proposal includes $322,000,000.00 (yes, $332 MILLION) in cuts to child care and early learning. Taken altogether, the Governor and state legislators are considering a budget measure that would amount to early learning shouldering 40% of the budget cuts when early learning takes up just 1% of our total state budget!

This week, a meaningful opportunity for Washington State to fix its inequitable tax code and stabilize our state’s overall health was introduced in the legislature.

As you've heard from us before, Washington State is in a major budget crisis and families are bearing the brunt of it. Our state budget lacks the resources to adequately fund child care, early learning, K12, health care, and other essential family programs because our tax code is upside down. This means working families pay a higher share of their income in state and local taxes than the wealthiest few.

This year alone, the Governor has proposed $322,000,000.00 (yes, $332 million) in cuts to child care and early learning. In fact, 40% of his total proposed cuts were *just* to child care. If the legislature approves these cuts, child care affordability and access for everyone will be undercut – those who pay in full and those who utilize subsidies. At the same time, our state is reeling from additional cuts to federal food assistance, health care, and other essential programs made by President Trump over the summer in his Big, Ugly Budget Bill.

There's never been a better time for Washington State lawmakers to pass a Millionaires Tax!

This Millionaires Tax (HB 2725/SB 6346) will be a major structural shift in the direction of fairness and tax justice. It asks millionaires to pay a little more while simultaneously expanding the state’s earned income tax credit, doubling tax exemption for small businesses, and removing sales tax on essential items. It’s a win-win-win. It will bring more sustainable revenues to our state resources in the future, making us less reliant on regressive taxes like the sales and property tax.

Here’s how it would work: The Legislature can enact a 10% tax on households earning above $1 million on an annual basis. By taxing just 20,000 of the wealthiest people in Washington (only 0.005% of the state’s working population), we can bring in nearly $3.5 billion a year in new revenue for good schools, affordable health care, housing, and nutrition.

Across the state, parents, educators, caregivers, and more are currently being left by inequitable systems to decide between health care and groceries, child care or rent. For months, we have been demanding that Congress take action to protect our health care—but Republican leaders and President Trump have refused to take the health care crisis they’ve created seriously. But thankfully, at the last minute, four House Republicans joined Democrats to force a vote on extending the ACA tax credits, which created a glimmer of hope! That is a big step forward in our fight to protect health care and has been made possible by your tireless and effective work!

Our advocacy has been working! Now’s the time to turn up the heat. Take action by writing a letter to the editor to tell the U.S. Senate: Finish the job—extend the expiring ACA tax credits! *Don’t stress - We’ll make it easy! We’ll give you a draft letter and all the talking points you need!

*We know that lawmakers read their local newspapers when they are back home over the holidays to see what is on the minds of the people in their districts, that’s why it’s critical for you to take action now and submit a letter to the editor to stop the health care heist!

We’re down to the wire here in the fight to lower costs and save health care for millions of Americans. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, which make health care coverage affordable for tens of millions of moms and families, are set to expire at the end of 2025. If they do, millions of families will soon be without health coverage, with dire consequences not just for them but also for our entire health care system and all of us who depend on it.

Time is running out, but it’s not too late! What’s happening? Families are feeling the strain of rising costs—from everyday essentials like groceries and gas, to back-to-school supplies, childcare, and health care. Now, Republicans in Congress are about to pull the rug out from under us yet again by increasing the cost of health coverage for millions if they don’t act quickly.

As we collectively brace for $1 trillion in health care cuts made in the Republicans’ Big, Ugly Budget Bill passed this summer, 24 million people who buy health coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace are at risk of seeing their health premiums soar when the enhanced tax credits expire at the end of 2025. But there’s still time! Congress can make the enhanced premium tax credits permanent in the upcoming funding bill!

Here’s why this matters: Millions of people—small business owners, students, early retirees, contractors, and others without workplace coverage—purchase their insurance via the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace. The vast majority of those with health care purchased from the ACA Marketplace receive enhanced premium tax credits, created during the pandemic to expand access by making coverage more affordable. These credits drove the uninsured rate to a historic low and made ACA plans far more affordable—saving the average enrollee $705 in 2024 or 44% of their annual costs!

But if Congress doesn’t act, premiums will spike by about 75%, putting further strain on our families and economy. In fact, about 5 million people will lose health insurance altogether. Which is why it is critical that Congress make these tax credits permanent ASAP.

Tell Robert F. Kennedy Jr. "You're fired!"

What’s happening? Since becoming U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has taken dangerous steps to sow vaccine mistrust and also to take away people’s access to life-saving vaccines. His actions are confusing parents, breaking trust, and creating a vaccine policy mess across states, which is putting public health at risk.

For instance, under Secretary Kennedy’s leadership, HHS has taken a series of reckless actions that promote vaccine misinformation. Just one example is that Kennedy fired the entire panel of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), and replaced them with his personal picks, including some with a history of spreading vaccine misinformation. The new group then held a hearing where it ignored data and analyses presented by the CDC about the safety of the flu vaccine, and instead cited debunked studies to call into doubt flu vaccine safety. The situation is so bad that a top doctor from the American Academy of Pediatrics described the hearing as part of “an orchestrated effort to sow distrust in immunizations and the vaccine approval process.”

THIS IS SO NOT OK! Our families deserve better. Health policy should be guided by science, not personal agendas.

Unfortunately, it gets worse. Under Secretary Kennedy’s leadership, the new committee also changed the recommendations for the COVID vaccine—again not based on science. For example, the CDC no longer recommends the COVID vaccine during pregnancy, even though research shows it’s safe and helps prevent adverse outcomes, including premature birth or infant deaths. They also stopped recommending the vaccine for most kids, even though it’s proven to safely protect against serious illness.

These changes make it harder for families to get the COVID vaccine, and will increase costs since insurers are no longer required to cover people outside of CDC’s now very narrow non-science-based new recommendations. It also strips families of their choice to vaccinate as these barriers become harder to overcome.

On Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Women’s Equal Pay Day: Demand Congress and the Trump administration end the attack.

Pop Quiz: How many additional months in a year do Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) women have to work to earn what white, non-Hispanic men make in one year?

If you said 8 months, you’re sadly correct. It’s unfair, yet true: NHPI women make just 65 cents on the dollar compared to white men, and when you factor in part-time and seasonal work, that number drops down to 61 cents, which is NOT okay.

Today, August 28th, marks Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) Women’s Equal Pay Day and we need you to take action!

→ Sign our letter urging Congress to support policies that help reduce these egregious pay disparities NHPI women face every single day.

Eight extra months is too long to wait to achieve pay equity. Especially since NHPI mothers, who are often pillars in their communities, are holding entire families together and lifting our economy while working more for less. They play significant roles in essential fields that our entire nation benefits from every day. Yet, they’re consistently being denied a livable wage, let alone the compensation they actually deserve. What does that mean for their families, communities, and our economy?

The bottom line: Lower earnings equal fewer resources for childcare and food budgets, less access to housing options, and smaller safety nets or none at all. It also means less economic boost because women and moms make the majority of consumer purchasing decisions in our nation.

Something that could help fix this economic dilemma? Data!

That’s because wage fairness begins with being SEEN, counted, and paid what you’re worth.

There currently isn’t any federal tracking that can help us understand the fullest picture of wage disparity in this country. In fact, the data we do have to capture what NHPI women earn is buried under aggregated sources and that alone is failing these communities.

We can no longer lump subgroups like Fijian, Tongan, Marshallese, Chuukese, and Palauan women and moms, who make even less than NHPI women, into the broader Asian American and Pacific Islander category. These tribes have their own cultures, languages, ethics and belief systems that are erased every time that happens. If Congress steps in to support federal tracking policies for NHPI, we would see a real change in data accessibility that could lead to a real change in the pay gap.

The horrific wage gap that NHPI women face is a structural and systemic problem and there are solutions if Congress makes them a priority.

Celebrating National Breastfeeding Month - Forward Together

This August, we Celebrate National Breastfeeding Month: Forward Together

Breastfeeding is about more than nutrition. It is about equity, dignity, and the right to be supported. We celebrate National Breastfeeding Month by lifting up the realities families face and demanding the policies they deserve. Forward Together means building a world where every parent no matter their race, income, or geography, can feed their baby with support and without barriers.

Many moms want to breastfeed, but face challenge after challenge in trying to meet their breastfeeding goals. In fact in the United States, 4 out of 5 mothers start out breastfeeding, but less than half are still breastfeeding at 6 months postpartum.

Why are so many women falling short of meeting their personal breastfeeding goals and recommendations of public health professionals? It's the reasons MomsRising members share with us everyday - the lack of access to paid family and medical leave and lack of lactation support and education.

Right now, 1 in 4 women is back at work within just two weeks of giving birth, not because they want to be, but because they simply can’t afford unpaid time off. That’s before they’ve had a chance to heal, let alone establish breastfeeding routines. When moms encounter challenges breastfeeding, many seek help from lactation professionals. But for low-income women, those supports are often inaccessible and unaffordable, even with limited healthcare coverage.

Now, the threat is even greater!

Cuts to Medicaid and coupled with threats to HHS funding put millions of families at risk of losing critical maternal and postpartum care, including access to lactation support. Medicaid currently covers more than 40% of all births in the U.S. and is a cornerstone of care for low-income families throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond. The impact of these cuts would be especially devastating in rural communities, where Medicaid funding helps keep hospitals, especially labor and delivery units open. Over 35% of U.S. counties have no birthing hospitals, birth centers, or obstetric providers. That means millions of families will be denied basic care.

And let’s be clear: these barriers are not felt equally. Black, Indigenous, and Latinx families face the steepest challenges not because of individual choices, but because of systems rooted in racism, underinvestment, and exclusion from policy decision-making. These inequities compound already dangerous disparities in maternal and infant health.

But There Are Solutions

The good news? We know what works.

Families need paid family and medical leave, access to lactation support, education, and supplies, and fully funded breastfeeding support programs that make it possible to receive support. These aren’t luxuries, they are necessities. They are how we move Forward Together.

Breastfeeding isn’t just good for moms and babies, it’s also good for the economy. If parents were supported in meeting breastfeeding recommendations, it could save the U.S. nearly $13 billion annually in pediatric health costs and preventable deaths.

That’s why we're gathering peacefully in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. against the cruel choice to trade our health, safety, and basic needs to make the rich richer. We're going to make sure every one of our friends and neighbors hears about the historic betrayal of everyday families in America—and how Republican leadership in Congress and the White House chose cuts to programs we all need to fund cruel attacks on immigrants and more tax breaks for the rich, undermining the health and safety of all of our families.
