Welcome to the weekly Spotted Crochet Blogs post. As I go along my week I come across some awesome crochet blogs. Maybe you follow them or maybe you don't - Hope you find someone new and let them know I send you.

Crochet n Crafts - This is not really a blog but a pattern site. I came across this site because I published my first article on hubpages. Rhelena, the owner of the site also writes on hubpages. Her directory not only showcases her free patterns but other designers free patterns as well. She also includes a picture for each pattern which is cool when browsing.
Crochet Addicts Susan D. - I found this blog over the weekend as she posted that she needed pattern testers. I decided I'd give her Kitty Bib a try and I'm testing it tonight. Should have it ready by the end of the night. Susan suffers from CFS [chronic fatigue syndrome] and shares this part of her too. Crochet has helped her in dealing with this illness.
Little Things made with Love - Barbina is from Germany and only started crocheting 10 months ago. She shares all of her beautiful crafts on this blog. Take a look at her banner for lots of crochet loveliness. P.S. Be sure to check out her Flower Square pattern.
Stocki - this blog was linked via Little things made with love. She's hosting a Friendship Blanket Exchange and this one you only have to make 1 square. Fiber must be cotton though. For details please do visit her blog.

Hobby Blogging: Article Marketing for Crochet Bloggers

Do you want more traffic to your blog or etsy shop? I know I do. I want to make more connections with crochet bloggers. This is why I do the Spotted Blogs post each week as well as the Finished Objects posts and more recently the Fresh Of tha Hook vlog.

I want to know my readers - to share in the joy of crochet and also the frustrations of not being able to understand a pattern or having to frog a project for the 20th+ time.

As a Crochet Blogger, you may be wondering how article marketing can help you and your blog.

Article marketing can help you in 3 ways:

Exposure. The more places your market can find you, the more routes to your website, the higher your traffic will be. Each article you write creates a separate trail someone can follow back to you – and become your customer. It is a great way to introduce a new product or pattern.
Expert Status. When you put quality information out into the marketplace, you will establish yourself as a go-to expert that people can come to for advice and information. Example: Rhelena's articles on How to Read Crochet Patterns
Stamp of Approval. When another website or blogger publishes your article that serves as a recommendation or “stamp of approval.” This validation serves as an introduction to that person’s audience, making them more receptive to your message. If you don’t put your content out there, this can’t happen.

How to Read Crochet Patterns

Featured Pattern: Basket Weave Head Band

On Monday we learned how to make a Front Post Double Crochet Stitch. This pattern uses the front post and the back post stitch. When alternated in this fashion it is called a Basket Weave stitch.

You will need an H8/5 mm hook
Yarn: Bernat Softee Baby or yarn of your choosing. A solid color will make the stitch pattern stand out more.
Gauge: 3fpdc, 3bpdc, 3fpdc, 3bpdc = 3"
1 Button
Sewing Needle

chain 2counts as 1st hdc throughout

Chain 10
1: 1hdc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across [8 hdc]ch2 turn
2: 1 hdc in each stitch across chain 2 turn
3: 1 hdc in each stitch across chain 2 turn
4: 1 hdc in each stitch across chain 2 turn
5: 2hdc in first stitch, 1 hdc in next 6 stitches, 2 hdc in last stitch [10hdc] ch2 turn
6: 1 hdc in each stitch across chain 2 turn
7: 2hdc in first stitch, 1 hdc in next 8 stitches, 2hdc in last stitch [12hdc] ch2 turn
Work BasketWeave Stitch Pattern Until Desired Length

To Work Basket Weave stitch pattern - alternate front post double crochet and back post double crochet

On Rows that start with bpdc:
[3 front post double crochet, 3 back post double crochet, 3 front post double crochet, 3 back post double crochet]ch2 turn

On rows that start with fpdc:
[3 back post double crochet, 3 front post double crochet, 3 back post double crochet, 3 front post double crochet ] ch2 turn

Once you have the length that you desire:
1 hdc in each stitch across, [12 hdc] ch2 turn
hdc dec, 1 hdc in next 8 stitches, hdc dec, ch2 turn
1 hdc in each stitch across [10hdc] ch2 turn
hdc dec, 1 hdc in next 6 stitches, hdc dec, ch2 turn
1 hdc in each stitch across [8hdc] ch2 turn
1 hdc in each stitch across ch2 turn
1hdc in each stitch across ch2 turn
1 hdc in each stitch across ch2 turn
1 hdc in each stitch across, finish off, weave in tails

Sew a button onto the band, You don't need a button hole because the hdc allows the button to fit easily.

It Takes Just One Minute To Touch A Child's Life

Just a minute out of your day can bring joy or destruction into a child's life depending on how you choose to use that minute. Will you choose destructive words or will you choose encouraging words?

I choose words of life but sometimes words of destruction come out. I recall growing up and the words that stick out the loudest seem to be the negative stuff my family said. I'm sure there were some positive words in there too but for some reason it's these negative things that keep replaying in my mind.

Imagine a mom and her 5 year old son. They have a good relationship and although she thrashes out in anger at times for the most part she encourages him to do great things.

Enter a newborn and now the mom is sleep deprived and depressed. It's getting harder for her to control her tongue and harsh things come out more easily.

The 5 year old is hurt and feels the only way he can stop the pain is to run away - to grandma's house or to a friend's house. In his innocence he is unaware of the dangers out in the world - especially in the neighborhood he lives in.

Imagine if you will that he did this not once but twice. Once was in the afternoon so it was daylight and his grandfather found him walking to his house. The mom is relieved but not changed. The second time he runs away is a bit more dangerous as it was at night when traffic from the night clubs and casino are in their prime. Again he was found but this time by the police. Thank God.

This mom didn't stop with there with her harsh words although it did scare her into watching her words for a while.

It took many more incidents and many apologies but eventually the harsh words got to be fewer. She still has problems and if her heart is in the right place she will apologize and pour prayer and positive words over her son.

One minute is powerful especially when you're choosing the words to say to your children. Will you say 'not now son' or 'get away I'm watching the game'? or Will you look your son in the eyes, give him your full attention - letting him know he is the most important person in your life in this moment and you care about what he has to say?

The story above is my story - I am that mom. I have to choose daily to think positively because my mind naturally replays the negative stuff that was said to me as a child. I also have to surrender daily to my own selfish desires to meet the needs of my children.

Many years of being around my 'potty mouth' has had its effect on my boys. As you can see in the following example:

"I love you soooo much. I'm sorry when I yell at you or curse at you. from Jonah"

This was on my computer last night in my url bar after he got angry at me for letting him know it was bedtime.

This was a real apology - I left the room and that is what I came to. I hugged him and all was forgiven.

God has blessed me even through my struggle with my language and harsh words because all the while I was learning to control myself my sons were learning the proper way to handle themselves when they hurt another with words.

I will forever hold that little apology in my heart as a reminder of what God is doing in our lives.

Crochet With Mom: Front Post Double Crochet

How to Make a Front Post Double Crochet

With a front post stitch you'll be able to make ribbing as well as cables.

In order for you to understand how to do this stitch you need to know that one stitch is called a post so when a pattern says to FPDC around the stitch - all it's saying is you need to take your hook, insert it in between the first and second dc stitches, move your hook around the post [dc] and come out back to the front in between the second and third stitches before making your double crochet.

Here is a wee diagram I came up with to try to explain this.

1. Enter front to back
2. You're going to continue moving your hook around the stitch[post]
3. Exit by moving your hook back out to the front again
4. You are now ready to make your double crochet stitch
5. When completed you have Front Post Double Crochet

Charity: Halos of Hope

This Christmas I was given the gift of a book of crochet patterns featuring chemo caps and wraps. This book was made by Connie Ellison and Halos of Hope founder Pamela Haschke.

This is the first I've heard of Halos of Hope which is an organization she started after her own battle with cancer. She started out locally by donating to the hospital and cancer centers near her but now Halos of Hope donates caps to over 450 locations.

I used to make caps for Headhuggers which is another organization that donates hats for chemo patients. I tried starting a local collection site for hats but was unsuccessful. We do have knitters who meet up to make hats for the cancer center as well as some ladies who sew caps.

We have a cancer center here that takes hats for cancer patients. In fact when you enter the building it's the first thing you notice. They display the caps near the help desk with a large sign that says "Hat - Please Take One".

It seems the week has come to an end. I'm sure we could extend this indefinitely as we both have lots to say about crochet. I was nervous about doing this - first afraid to ask someone and then fearful of having nothing to talk about - proved that to be false huh?

Seems like 2012 will be filled with new projects and fantastic connections for both of us. Looking forward to the completion of your Swaddle project and to see how your Surmount My Stash turns out. I know we all want to organize our yarn, patterns, and projects - you happen to be doing it and we get to share the process with you.

You Asked:

How does the comfort of crochet make it easier to try tackling those things outside of your comfort zone?

I really think I was given crochet as a means to heal and express myself. It is the one thing I always feel comfortable talking about. [i.e. this conversation] I love it when newbies finally 'get it'.

It reminds of when I was teaching my oldest son to read. It was rough there for a while so we set it aside for a month or so. Once we picked it up again, his brain just got it. It was like - Oh, I get it! It's pure bliss watching someone connect with what they're learning whether it be reading or crochet.

What would you still like to learn or improve in your crochet work?

Tapestry sounds like a worthy challenge and one day I will tackle it full on. Actually this year my goal big fiber goal is knitting related [don't run away] - I want to learn to knit socks. I figure if I know how to do that than I'll be able to better translate it into crochet. I've tried crochet sock patterns in the past and they always end up being too thick or too painful to wear. [hurt the bottom of my foot]

I'd love to do more color work [tapestry] and more work with cables and unique stitches. The crocodile stitch has really peaked my interest and now that Bonita Patterns has her new Baby Booties pattern out - I really want to make them.

I also want to know more about pattern construction. I've written my own patterns but I want to write them in a way a newbie could figure them out. I also want to rewrite my old patterns with the yarn council standards. [yarn weight, hook, etc]

What is one thing that you wish people knew about crochet?

Some people tend to think of crochet as the 'poor' craft even looking down on those who purchase their yarn from craft shops instead of 'real yarn stores'. I think that crocheters and knitters are taught differently because knitters are usually taught with the LYS [local yarn store] in mind and crocheters are taught with a craft store in mind. I see no difference except for currency. I shop at craft stores because that is what my budget allows. If I was able to buy any yarn in any amount YOU bet I'd be all over it.

I think crocheters need to stand up for themselves. When someone says 'Oh, that's crochet' exclaim with great power 'You betch Ya it's crochet. Want to learn?'

This week has flown by - can't believe we are on the fourth day of this cross blog conversation. It was definitely a great experience.

Today I'm running a bit late on getting back to you - had a bit of a snag on homeschooling my son this morning - so I'll get right to your questions.

Is there a genre or style of crochet fiction that you’d like to see someone writing?

I actually like mystery books so more of this type of genre would be good in crochet. I read all the Betty Hechtman's books but only really cared for the first in the series. The plot just repeated itself in all subsequent books so it got stale for me.

I read Hooked for Life: Adventures of a Crochet Zealot by Mary Beth Temple and really enjoyed the humorous side of crochet. We need to laugh more often [especially at ourselves] and I think this book really helps us do that.

Am I right in thinking that you’ve taught some one-on-one crochet in the past? What was that like? Are you a teacher in any other capacity?

Yes, I've taught one-on-one lessons before plus I taught a group of ladies in a Bible Study to crochet a scarf for gifts. I love teaching others how to crochet. I'm always nervous because my 'negative self' always battles with my true self but all in all I find that people are kind and quite thankful for my skills in crochet.

If you call Homeschooling my son teaching than yes - I am a teacher. I do not have a degree in teaching and although I initially got into homeschooling because of religious reasons this is no longer the case.

I find homeschooling challenging - especially teaching our special needs son. On the other hand it is developing patience in me and strength that I did not know was possible. I also like learning right along with him - it's like I get to go to school again and this time pay attention!

How is FOTH going? What are the biggest challenges in moving from text to video to talk about your crochet?

I just started with FOTH [Fresh off Tha Hook] with Marcelle on Youtube. [onevirtuouswoman]. It is a group of vloggers who showcase what they've made via youtube. Instead of the Finished Object Fridays in the blogosphere this is a finished object in the video-sphrere.

The biggest challenge of moving from text to video is my shyness. I need to speak louder, be myself more, and learn the technical aspects of the webcam. My son is showing me some tips for the technical side. Another challenge is exposing myself - I enjoy hiding behind a screen but FOTH pushes me out of my comfort zone and forces me to connect in a deeper way to my audience.

My goal for 2012 is to be more social so this is one way for me to fight my shyness in a tangible way. It is also a great way to meet other crocheters online and be apart of the online community of crochet.

This week I came across a number of great crochet bloggers. I'm so excited to be sharing these with you. These blogs were found using my new Pinterest account, twitter and my blog roll.

FreeTime Goods blog - owned by Emily Marshall in Aspen, CO who runs a business by the same name. She makes all of her hats from quality high end yarns [hats sell at $80+] from local businesses or businesses within the USA. She also recycles the scraps into 'new yarn' and then crochets new one of a kind loopy hats.
Crochet at Begonvilliev - mediterranian blogger with a love for family and the art of crochet. She hosts a regular link up in which you can share your beautiful finished objects. Check out her crocheted bottle cozies she made for the holidays.
Crochet in Color - I don't recall how I came across this blog but it is in my blogroll. I saw a post on 'free pattern' and had to click. She did a beautiful job on a simple hat and shows a great finishing technique that eliminates the knot.
Little Rays of Sunshine - Kim is a mom, wife and crocheter. She'll also an etsy seller. I found her via Pinterest when she shared her slouchy beanie pattern.
Crocheting The Day Away - Mary, mom and crocheter. Love this blog because she has super tutorials with awesome pictures. If you want to learn how to Tunisian crochet - check out her tutorial.
Speckless blog - Heidi shares her love of crochet with her cat Penny and her partner Mr. Nicky. She has a growing list of tutorials for your to check out. Her blog is such a happy place to visit - you can't leave without a smile on your face.
Croshame blog - found this blog on twitter via a squidoo friend. Hat to share this because of the Spock ears. You could also tweak this to be sprite-elf ears too. Prepare yourself for some humor as you enter the world of Shovemink. She 'begrudgingly took up crocheting in October 2009' but eventually got hooked, quit her retail job and now sells her amigurumi.

Hobby Blogging: Join the Community

Last week I shared how blogging is a way that crocheters connect with their community online. This week I'd like to share a couple of more options that you can use to connect with crochet bloggers online to build a community around you and your blog.

Fresh off tha hook - is a Youtube community of crocheters who share what they have created on a weekly basis. You can see my addition to this little group with my first FOTH video here. They are currently accepting auditions so let me know if you'd like to participate and I'll let Marcelle know.
Crochet Liberation Front - just opened up a Membership site on her blog. Registration is currently free but paid memberships are coming. There's a forum called Hookey as well as crochet groups for you to socialize with other Crochet Lovers. This is just starting so it should be cool to see how it grows in the upcoming years.
CreatingtheHive - is an online Crafters community filled with all crafting - not just crochet. You can join groups, read blogs and view events happening all across the country. If you have a craft faire coming up be sure to add it to the calendar.
Hobzy.com - this is a place I found out about via a blogger who found out about it from the Crochet Encyclopedia Gal - @Crochetblogger. Add photos, videos and documents to socialize with others.

Don't forget the obvious channels for connecting with crochet bloggers - Facebook groups and Twitter. One not so obvious social site for crocheters is Google+. I've had opportunity to meet a number of crocheters [and other crafters] that I would not have normally crossed paths with.

Another great option for socializing with crochet bloggers is via audio. Take a peek at blogtalkradio or itunes and search crochet podcasts and you'll see quite a few. Add your voice to your blog and meet a whole other community.

You know, I was thinking the same thing - about making a coffee table book out of your photos - that would be a great book to own. I just started on Pinterest so I'm all excited about checking out your photos and pins over there.

Ohh, Like that title "Crochet Saved My Life". Definitely a book I would read. I find that crochet literature is lacking. I have read a few crochet fiction books but there aren't too many out there. Have you read any crochet fiction?

I definitely see the prospective success for your crochet jobs project. I will definitely spread the word for you. Maybe as word gets around then as you say, it will be a hub where people find and post crochet jobs.

Loving your hashtag #CrochetQuestionoftheDay project - didn't know you were on G+ so will have to spread the word about that as well. I just found someone via Twitter a week or so ago who has something similar on her blog called 'How the Hook?' where you ask questions and she answers. I featured her in my spotted blog post last week.

You asked:

do tell me more about that class! [Crochet Class]

After meeting with a job coach late December 2011 and going through a 2-day resume workshop that really got to the heart of what I wanted to do for a job I kept coming back to crochet. I was challenged to contact 2 people after the workshop, which I did and this led me to setting up crochet classes with a local shop. I'll be teaching beginning and intermediate classes on Saturdays in February and then see where it goes from there.

So tell me, any idea what you’re going to make for yourself before that class starts? Do you use other people’s patterns as well or just make your own?

Not sure what I'll make for myself as I been working on samples for the class. I did make a nice little scarflette that I've been wearing lately and it's received a number of compliments - I'll probably make another one or a tweaked version of it.

I use both - mine and others. It really depends on what I'm in the mood for. I'm a collector of patterns so do have quite a collection. Haven't made everything I have a pattern for so I think I should probably do that first.

I’d love to know more about your charity crocheting.

The first 'charity' crocheting I did was through a yahoo group. They served women who were pregnant or who lost their babies. It was this heart blanket pattern that really made me love crochet. I must have made 50 blankets. I also gave them away on a mothering forum to new mama's - it is a nice memory - wish I could afford to do that again. Right now I'm crocheting hats for the local hospital and squares for Warm up America.

Have you done this type of Granny Square exchange in the past? If so, what have you made with the squares?

I used to be active in Granny exchanges on yahoo and then when swap-bot came along I kind of got lost in there for a year or two - doing all sorts of mail swaps. I even did some crochet swaps over there - amigurumi, granny squares, water bottle holder, dish cloths etc.. I took all of 2011 off from swapping - it was hard in the beginning but now I think I will let myself do a swap now and again - the first one being the Granny Square Exchange.

I've made lapghans, a scarf and a purse. I had a lady send thread granny squares so what I did was sewed them together with a whipstitch, lined it with material, and added a strap. I got so many compliments on that bag. They were beautifully done squares.

Okay to wrap this up, I see that you’ve got the Compassion International Fundraiser coming up next month. What’s that all about?

About a year or so ago I started sponsoring a child named Sara. I have a fb friend who is an advocate for them. I fell in love with her sponsored children as I read about the letters they send back and forth. I also started sponsoring another child, Ravi, last year so now I'm up to two children. I am so blessed by these two children.

It's been a way for me to not focus on 'ME' and my situation [job wise] and remember what really matters. My perspective on poverty or being without has changed dramatically since getting involved with Compassion International and talking with Sara and Ravi through letters. Her family lives on $25/month so Americans [most] really can't complain.

I earn royalties on articles I write on Squidoo. I used to spend this on yarn and swaps but now I use it to sponsor these children. Compassion International lets you send birthday gifts, family gifts, as wells as gifts for holidays. This is what the fundraiser is all about. I want to send that extra bit to their families.

I'll be crocheting some hats and selling those for donations. I was originally thinking $20 a piece but I'm thinking of doing an auction type of thing so that people can donate what they can afford. My goal is to raise their entire year sponsorships which is$960/year for both Ravi and Sara. I would have to sell 48 hats for $20 each to make that goal. Lofty goal I know.

With gifts I was able to send last year Sara bought school clothes and a large bag of rice for her family. Ravi bought school clothes as well but also bought a cake on his birthday that he shared with his whole class. He also bought his mom 2 chairs. See what I mean about perspective? Sara [7] and Ravi [11] wrote me letters to thank me for these gifts. Maybe to Americans it seems so small [chairs and a bag of rice] but to them it is grand. Ravi's mom also wrote a thank you. I've been so blessed.

I could go on and on about this but I'll share more in February.

I showed you how to do the seed stitch on Monday because this pattern uses this stitch - my version which is hdc, sc.

You'll need some 3 ply worsted weight yarn and a H hook.
Start out making a chain of 51. Now slip stitch in each stitch across making 1sl st + 1sc in last stitch, ch 1 turn
2sc in each stitch [4sc] ch 1 turn
1 sc in each stitch [ 4sc] ch 1 turn
2sc in first stitch, sc in each stitch until the last, 2 sc in last stitch [ 6sc] ch1 turn
1sc in each stitch across [6sc] ch1 turn
2sc in first stitch, sc in each stitch until last stitch, 2 sc in last stitch [8sc] ch 1 turn
1sc in each stitch across [8sc] ch 1 turn

Now work the pattern stitch [sc, dc] ch 1 turn for 21 rows

row 22 - sc in each stitch across, ch 1 turn
dec sc, 1sc 4 times, dec sc, ch1 turn
1sc in each stitch across

I was wondering how you were going to wear so much crochet - now I understand. Funny thing, I don't wear crochet as often as I should. I'm one to give my creations away. This year however, I'll be teaching crochet at a local shop - Craftology - so I'll need to change that.

The 365 Project sounds like a challenge and yes, it should be interesting to see how it plays out mid-year. Looking forward to seeing the entire collection at the end of the year. Do you have a Flickr set or other album for it?

When Grandma Isn't Crocheting She's Hunting Big Game sounds like a great collection of crochet themed stories. I know I find awesome crochet news stories throughout the year that I want to remember but you've gone one step further and made a booklet out of them. It would be cool to interview each one and highlight their work - good luck on that project.

I too got started in crochet when I was young. Got started might not be the best description. I was exposed to crochet when I was young via my mom who used to crochet matching outfits for us girls. [3 sisters] She taught me how to chain. I remember making long chains and then thinking this is boring so set it aside. I think it was difficult for me to learn more stitches because she is left handed and I'm right. I didn't get interested in it again until 1999 when pregnant with my second son.

Wow, didn't know about your struggle with depression. I would never have guessed as you are such a positive influence. I try not to talk about it a lot but I too suffer from bouts of depression and on top of that mania. [Bipolar] Back in high school I was diagnosed with depression and took medication on and off until college. I wasn't a big fan of medication so of course took myself off when I moved out of my parents.

I also had postpartum depression with both pregnancies. It wasn't until my last pregnancy that I went 'insane' as my boys say. I didn't take medication because I was nursing. Once my son was weaned [about 1 year] and because I was hospitalized, I was placed on medication. I won't get into the details and the bipolar diagnosis on here but did email you about participating in your book on Healing Benefits of Crochet.

I too think my emotional connection to crochet has something to do with the fact that it was part of my healing process. It gave me something to do besides thinking negative thoughts. Plus, it gave me a way to give back - I started crocheting blankets for mom's who were pregnant and then booties for mom's who lost their baby. [I lost a baby on Christmas 1998]

Talk about a chatter box - you get this shy girl talking about crochet and she never stops.

So, now to your questions:

What is your background in blogging and online writing?

I actually started blogging on a fluke. I was participating in a number of swaps over on swap-bot.com and one of the swaps entailed visiting blogs to leave a comment. Back then most people had to sign in to comment on blogger. This is how I started. I came across a blogger who posted photos of her finished objects. I thought 'I could do that' and thus the 'Momwithahook' persona was born.

I've always been a writer. Back in school English was my best subject and my favorite subject. I started to write articles on Ezine Articles back in 2005 as a way to bring traffic to various sites I had. Writing has always been a way for me to express all that's going on inside and now I get paid for it - how cool is that?

With regards to the 365 Crochet Blog Topics and Editorial Calendar - Can you tell me a bit more about those resources and how you hope crocheters online will be able to take advantage of them?

The 365 Crochet Blog Topics actually grew from my work on Squidoo.com. I started writing over there back in September 2007 and eventually crochet saturated my articles. I wanted more crocheters and knitters to utilize this platform to bring traffic to their blogs and/or etsy shops so I created two articles - How to make a Crochet Themed Lens and 100 Crochet Topics. This year when a friend published her free Blog Editorial Calendar I thought I could do this for crochet bloggers.

As far as the editorial calendar - this was inspired by my friends Blog Editorial Calendar. I will be writing based on these themes. I love guest blogging and invite guest bloggers to take a look at the calendar to see what they can contribute. I have interviews planned, this cross blog conversation, a fundraiser and the Granny Square Exchange. I'm also working on a project called How to Monetize Your Crochet Blog which will be completed in March.

I hope crochet bloggers will utilize these resources to blog more consistently, to give them ideas on what to blog about, to be more social in their blogs by connecting to their readers, and if they so choose, become a guest blogger so that my readers can see their work and find other crochet friends.

As far as the Granny Square Exchange goes - it is based on the round robins of old. Each participant will make 10 granny squares. They will then mail one square to 10 partners. Each square will have a letter attached with the bloggers name and a bit of history on how and why they love crochet. We will then post as we receive our squares. When we connect the squares we are connecting friendship - A Friendship Afghan.

I know 10 squares isn't enough for an entire afghan but you can utilize these squares in an afghan or participate in other exchanges to gather more squares from crocheters all over the world. Imagine curling up in the blanket and recalling all your crochet friends from across the world?

I do a variation on this stitch. Instead of using a double crochet I like to use a half double crochet.

Yesterday as I visited your blog I noticed you have a book up for sale. The title alone wants me to read it. I can actually see a shot gun totting grandma picking up her hook and yarn in between hunting for dinner and protecting her land.

I learned to crochet because I was pregnant and wanted something special for the baby - my son is now 11 yo. Ever since I've had a hook and yarn in hand practically everywhere I go.

How to Organize Your Yarn (mp3)

How do you organize your yarn? Um, did I just ask that? Do organize and yarn belong in the same sentence? Does your living space get in the way of your yarn stash? Mine too!

Now, if only I had neat shelves like in the above photo to store my yarn stash - that would be awesome.

What I use to Organize Yarn:
I use blue totes and clear plastic 3-drawer dressers on wheels. These store my many craft projects. Although I've purged myself of quite a bit since 2009, I still have 4 blue totes and 2 dressers filled with supplies.

I'm currently using all my stash in the Granny-a-Day challenge over on MacsCrochet Blog and only purchase yarn through program rewards like swagbucks, socialmoms, or mypoints. However, now that I'll be teaching crochet at Craftology I might end up picking up a skein or two while there. Ugh - there is just so much yarn and too little money and time.

For projects I'm currently working on I place the balls of yarn in a basket along with the hook I'm using and my mushroom needle and stitch holder.

My unfinished objects are placed in a tote along with the pattern and the yarn. I only have a few unfinished projects now which include a hat, a head band, and my mom's blanket. Yes, I'm bad, still haven't finished it. I did bring this back in the house so I have it in my view to remind to work on 2-3 rows per day. I will get this done yet.

Finished Object Friday #4

Finished Object Fridays #4 (mp3)

It's been a busy week for me. In between homeschooling my son, taking him to karate and writing articles I crocheted a bit. I'm still working on the granny a day challenge [a bit more difficult to stay up to date than I thought] and I'm also making hats for the local hospital.

Here's what I finished up this week:

I'm starting to get down to little scraps and small balls of yarn. One square [second from the left] has 4 yarns in it. I'm joining as I go with a single crochet. I'll be working rows of 7 for now which is 1 square a day and then see how I'll work up the final piece - either in a 366 square afghan or a number of smaller lapghans.

I joined these squares differently but didn't like the ridge it left. So I set this aside and started joining them with a single crochet which I like better. Also, should have set some of the same color yarn aside as now I'm going to have the ugliest granny square blanket around - what with all the mixed matched yarn. Oh boy.

This week I finally got around to stitching the 'nori' onto my onigiri - rice ball - ami. I think I cut it way too wide.

I made a sample Valentine project - it's a heart from a Redheart pattern - It's a double stitch twins pattern called "Heartfelt Halter". I made two hearts and then used a blanket stitch to sew them together - leaving a long tail so I can hang it. I also made a number of hearts which I will use in a bunting.

Finally, I made a couple of baby hats for the local hospital. Once I get up enough hats I'll drop them off.

Purple Butterfly Crochet Collection - I found Cheryl on twitter this past week. She responded to a tweet I put out regarding a hat pattern directory I'm putting together and we've enjoyed a back and forth conversation since. She's just starting out in the blogosphere but already her site is filled with lovely things. Check out her 'How in the Hook?' section where you can ask her anything crochet related.

The Crochet Crowd - Water Waves Scarf Pattern by Michael Sellick who also has a fabulous crochet channel on youtube. Be sure to check his channel out as he has giveaways of yarn and other supplies. He is a spokesman for Bernat Yarn and has a number of sponsored episodes that teach the basics of crochet. One Crafty Mumma - Melissa shares her adventures in granny squares as she decorates her caravan. She has such lovely accessories - bunting, afghan, cushions - so much lovely crochet inside. She also shares about her family and the other crafts she enjoys.

The Shy Lion - just one of the many guy crocheters out there. I found him this week via a post by another blog I'll feature in my newsletter - Grateful Crochet. He just did a post on an owl he made as well as a little dinosaur or dragon - he can't make up his mind - can you help?

Hobby Blogging: Connecting With Others

Hobby Blogging: Connecting with Others (mp3)

Crocheters and Knitters are people who enjoy connecting. We like the craft but we also like engaging in chatter and sharing a cup of tea or coffee.

In the blogosphere we like to share as well. We do this when we make a recommendation on a pattern, a yarn, or even a blog post.

These connections help build your readership, which helps build your traffic, which eventually helps your income stream. The best part of this is that since you're blogging about your hobby - crochet - it is a connection that is rewarding because you are passionate about your craft and naturally you connect with those who share your passion.

PlanetJune is a perfect example of this connection. I remember following her blog many years ago and trying out her patterns. She published a book on amigurumi dogs and I purchased that. She started doing crochet-a-longs and I followed one or two of those as well.

June Gilbank is now at a point in her career where she can't keep up with all the orders for her amigurumi's. How does she solve this problem? She gives the purchaser of the pattern the rights to sell the finished items with a link back to her site and her name as designer.

June goes one step further as she creates a useful tool for both her customers and her readers by developing a list of crocheters who make and sell items from her designs. You can find out more about this project by visiting PlanetJune's Facebook page. While there why not help her name the list with a catchy phrase.

I'm excited to see her growth as a designer and a business owner. Connections make all the difference in the world. If I didn't connect with her via her blog I wouldn't have this same excitement for her. It is as though I'm seeing one of my children grow up - too emotional? maybe, but I don't think I'm the only one who gets all excited when a fellow crochet blogger succeeds.

I came up with this quick pattern over the weekend while brainstorming ideas for my first crochet class. [Have I mentioned I'm so excited!] I showed you a picture of it in my Finished Objects post last Friday.

Hook: H/8
Yarn: Lily Sugar n' Cream Powder; Full O' Sheep Red

Cast on 11 stitches

Work first row of stitches [forward-backward pass]

Repeat the forward and backward passes until piece is 20 rows long.

Fold piece in half, sc on side, bottom, and opposite side [closes the sides and gives decoration to the bottom]

On last single crochet, chain 50 - 80 or however long you'd like the handle, then slip stitch it to the opposite side of purse.

Finished measurements of purse: 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" [10" long with handle]

For this bag I'll be adding a small version of this crochet gnome and gifting it to a special lady.

Flower:
I chained 6, slip stitched to first chain made. In each chain I [sc, hdc, sc] slip stitched in next stitch - then repeated the [sc, hdc, sc + slip stitch in next stitch] around until I had 6 petals.

You can choose to add the flower or not - you could also make a heart. Just google crochet heart pattern and you'll find a number of them.
