dream come true. Motherhood: The Musical has just premiéred in Tampa, Florida to rave reviews. No surprise here. Fabisch is both a gifted comic and songwriter who has woven together a character driven play based on a plethera of her "mommy standard" and newly created tunes. Who wouldn't chuckle out loud at such lyrics as, "what really turns me on is to buy a flat screen TV, a paper shredder and a hundred and twelve tampons!..I'm a Costco Queen, yah yah, a Costco Queen!"

Check out the video.

I offer so many congratulations to Sue for her dedication, hard work and success.

Here is the first of many great reviews. Rather than resting her laurels on the usual mommy experiences to get a laugh, the Nashville-based songwriter put some muscle into this baby.

Her riotous and perceptive lyrics, some co-written with Ilene Angel, William Flowerree, Jesse Goldberg and/or Johnny Rodgers, shed a whole new light on Costco, minivans, boobs and, of course, parenting.

Four women at different stages of motherhood share their stories about the toughest job in the world.

In three weeks, Amy (Juliana Black) is due to become a mom for the first time. Barb (Angela Bond) has three kids and zero patience: been there, done that. Brooke (Becca McCoy) struggles with the time constraints of being a working parent and Tasha (Jayne Trinette) deals with the challenges of divorce.

While Amy naively fantasizes about scrapbooking, wipe warmers and cloth diapers, her three friends try to enlighten her to reality: you can do it all, just not at the same time. But as is true for every new mom, Amy doesn't get it until she brings that baby home.

The show starts off strong with Black mooning over pregnancy in "I'm Having a Baby," followed by Bond's bubble-bursting "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy." Trinette reminisced the days when she was cool in a convertible, only to end up towing 17 kids in "Minivan."

Just when the funny stuff was hitting its stride, Fabisch came in swinging with the real emotional impact of motherhood. "I'm Danny's Mom" beautifully captured a nearly indescribable love. You didn't need to be a parent to appreciate the feelings steering this song.

From tears to laughter again, "Costco Queen" was hands down the most creative number. The message here was that a "storegasm" could be achieved through the power of bulk. Michael Schweikardt's set design and Sue Hill's costumes matched the brilliant lyrics, honoring Costco's convenience with bright lights and clever headwear.

Finally, the cast rocked out to "Not Gonna Take it Anymore." This was a highly entertaining homage to classic rock 'n' roll and the multiple uses of household products.

Each all-too familiar scenario could have easily settled into trite comfortability were it not for Fabisch's uncommon wit. She's raised the bar on reality-based humor. At the same time, the serious moments — the ones that justify the torture mothers endure — weren't gratuitous or false. These were genuine, heartfelt nods to a job that's more complicated and less appreciated than brain surgery.

LA Weekly Picks MOMz Hot ROCKs

<img style="display:block; But in the case of Kate Perotti's documentary MOMz Hot ROCKs, the sonic barrage is coming from the moms themselves. Perotti introduces us to mom bands from around the country with such names as the Mydols, Housewives on Prozac, Placenta — you get the idea — and song titles like "Eat Your Damn Spaghetti!" Perotti got the idea for the film eight years ago when she was researching women who rock. "I wanted to showcase some of the talent, creativity and humor. Currently, in 2011, there is definitely a large connected international community of mom rockers," she says. How are the sacrifices rocker moms make any different from rocker dads? "Think room service versus diaper service. No need to pour whiskey on your wrist before emptying the bottle. And I would just say, outfits." MOMz Hot ROCKs screens as part of the Documental Film Series.

http://www.laweekly.com/events/search/

ZagrebDox 2011 hosts MOMz Hot ROCKs

Many thanks to the amazing town and staff of the 2011 ZagrebDox International Documentary Film Festival held last week, February 26th-March 6th in Croatia. An incredible mélange of North, South, East and West. The people are overwhelmingly gracious and nice, the food and drink simply wonderful. The conversation continues about what we can do individually and globally to address environmental concerns. It debunks much of the information in An Inconvenient Truth and poses multiple strategies that will take increased research and development as a society as a whole. I saw it this evening at the 92Y Tribeca with Ondi and Bjorn present, I hope the reception everywhere is as grand. The film is dense with information, simultaneously entertaining and engaging. A striking endeavor that piques the brain to imagine what we can accomplish on a macro level in our micro world. Congratulations to the filmmakers, another relevant act for change.

MOMz Hot ROCKs off the Charts: Mydols Open for The B-52's TONIGHT!

<img style="text-align: left;display: block; Austin, who was previously Head of Sales at Capitol Films/TH!NK Film International and Director of Distribution for Intermedia Film, has quietly been constructing the building blocks of the company and has secured financing from an undisclosed international financier.

The first film from Breakaway Media is PASSENGER SIDE, written and directed by Matthew Bissonnette (WHO LOVES THE SUN), starring Adam Scott (LEAP YEAR), and featuring a killer soundtrack with songs by Leonard Cohen, Dinosaur Jr., Evan Dando and Wilco. Following critically acclaimed screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Festival and London Film Festival, PASSENGER SIDE has been touted as “a thinking man’s Judd Apatow flick” by LA Weekly and “a poignant portrait of sibling rivalry and affection” by The Hollywood Reporter. PASSENGER SIDE has recently been named one of Canada’s Top Ten films of 2009 by the Toronto International Film Festival, and both the film’s producer Corey Marr and Bissonnette were selected this summer to participate in the Los Angeles Film Festival Fast Track program, which recognizes up and coming filmmakers on the rise. PASSENGER SIDE will screen at EFM on Feb. 13 and 15.

Also on Breakaway Media’s inaugural slate of films are Mike McCarthy’s comic book-based film noir CIGARETTE GIRL, which was singled out by The Hollywood Reporter as one of 5 Best Bets at the 2009 Comic-Con (screening Feb. 14 at EFM); Tony Elwood’s award winning horror film COLD STORAGE; and Kate Perotti’s hilarious music documentary MOMZ HOT ROCKS.

Said company founder and President Mark Austin, “I am excited to bring Breakaway Media and our slate to the EFM. It was a gorgeous summer day. My wonderful Aunt Madeline and Uncle Bill and Madeline's mother Ann were waiting in the car while I grabbed my posters from the filmmakers lounge. I couldn't see how I would win an award with 234 other great films in the festival and decided to spend my last day in Providence eating the local fare, visiting their friends house restoration projects, going to yard sales, and eating more local fare...

It was only two weeks ago that I found out MOMz Hot ROCKs got the Audience Award (tying with Rock Prophecies).

MOMz Hot ROCKs sailed through the RIIFF

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Sjeu8M6MkPc/SoNA8yJmTTI/AAAAAAAAAFM/mSpT2sF6juY/s400/images-1.jpeg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5369206593754123570" style="float: left; What a torrent of power, grace, beauty and humour, Ms. Grace Jones ruled the Hollywood Bowl last Sunday July 26, 2009. She looked beyond fabulous, looking more like an Olympic Athlete than anything else.

And what a surprise when she introduced her son! He, a grown man, was playing percussion on stage with the band. How cool is that. She and Yoko would make a great double bill in some wild space like the Tate Modern...

The show was a mix of a few classics, plus La Vie en Rose and new tracks from her soon to be released in the US album, "Hurricane." The LA crowd was fun as downloads have obviously made there way across the pond to our ears enabling several sing-a-longs. (lame wording for a great moments in music)

She makes the future look brighter for all of us.

Our friends love its bright, familiar flavours and we love how easy it is to make. You can toss steaming, wet, just cooked pasta with melting cream cheese to form an incredibly smooth luxurious sauce. The smoked salmon adds extravagance balanced by other familiar flavours: dill, lemon, onion, mustard and capers. A five star dish for sharing!

Serves four

1 lb penne or your favourite shaped pasta like bowties, long pastas like spaghetti don’t work as well
1 cup room temperature cream cheese
1 bunch of fresh dill, chopped
4 green onions, sliced
1 lemon, juiced and zested
1 heaping spoonful of Dijon mustard
1/4 cup capers
8 ounces smoked salmon, or more
sprinkled sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Season it liberally with salt until tastes like a day at the beach on Prince Edward Island. As the pasta cooks it will absorb the salted water and become properly seasoned. Cook al dente, until the pasta is cooked through but still pleasantly chewy.

Scoop out some of the starchy cooking water. Drain the pasta but not quite all the way. Leave it a bit wet. Toss the pasta back into the pot along with a splash or two of the reserved water, perhaps a half-cup or so in total then immediately add the rest of the ingredients. While the pasta is still steaming hot it will easily melt the cream cheese and form a rich creamy sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.

Simply Steamed Island Blue Mussels with Three Different Flavours

Mussels are super simple to cook and travel with their own built-in sauce base. They’re easy to steam and when you do, they release a flavourful broth that many connoisseurs swear is the best part. That broth can be flavoured any way you care too so mussels are also a great ingredient to free style with.

Serves four

Five to six pounds of mussels, rinsed well with lots of cold running water
Choose 1 of the following three flavouring groups:

• A 12 ounce bottle of your favourite local beer, a sliced onion, a tablespoon of butter

• 1 cup of orange juice, 1 tablespoon of curry powder

• 1 cup of whatever wine you’re drinking, 1 tablespoon of mustard, 1 teaspoon of dried thyme, 1 tablespoon of butter

Wash the mussels very well and discard any that are open and wont close with a bit of gentle finger pressure.

Pour the liquid and other aromatic ingredients of your choice into a large pot with a tight fitting lid. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Add the mussels and cover with the lid. Shake the pot occasionally and cook until all the mussels have opened, ten minutes or so.

Spoon out the mussels into a serving bowl. Strain the remaining liquid to remove any broken shell or lingering sand in it. Serve with the mussels and lots of bread for soaking up the flavourful juice!

Organic Prince Edward Island Field Greens with Apple Vinaigrette & Pumpkin Seeds

A simple greens salad is both healthy and tasty. When you toss it yourself with local organic greens and a homemade dressing it can also be a powerful way to support sustainable food choices.

Serves four

Four handfuls of local, organic field greens
1/2 cup of toasted pumpkin seeds
1/4 cup of canola oil
2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon of local honey
1 teaspoon of any mustard
salt and pepper to taste

In a festive salad bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, honey and mustard until they form a smooth dressing. Toss the greens in the dressing until evenly and lightly coated. Sprinkle on the pumpkin seeds and any other of your favourite locally and seasonally inspired salad garnishes!

MOMz Hot ROCKs to MAKE WAVES IN VENTURA

MOMz Hot ROCKs has a great slot in the Ventura Film Festival this weekend!

The calendar is now final. MOMz Hot ROCKs will show at the 2000 seat

Majestic Ventura Theater!

Friday July 3rd, 2009 at 4pm.

Thank you Ventura!

I am so personally thrilled. Looks like the Ventura Film Fesival will have some great films to watch, check out the whole line up.
