La cousine de mon mari remarquait que sa fille M ne supportait pas les bonnets qui s'attachent dessous le menton. Comme ils vivent en Alaska, un bonnet qui couvre les oreilles et tient bien sur la tête est quand même indispensable. Donc j'ai voulu lui offrir quelque chose qui répondait à ces critères, en même temps qu'étant comfortable et amusant pour une petite fille. Après une longue recherche sur Ravelry, j'ai trouvé le modèle Toasty Topper, une création de Alexis Riggs paru sur Knitty en 2007, qui m'a beaucoup plu.

Mais quelle couleur choisir ? La cadette de mes filles, un peu plus grande que M, me demandait un bonnet des couleurs de l'arc-en-ciel. Alors je me suis décidée de faire deux, pour que les petites cousines, séparées par tout un continent, puissent avoir des bonnets identiques en commun. Pour la laine, j'ai utilisé Malabrigo pour tout sauf le vert, qui s'agit de O-wool.

Ensuite, montage de mailles ! J'ai commencé en montant 6 mailles utilisant l’astuce “nombril” de Techknitter. J'ai augmenté jusqu’à un total de 96 mailles, changeant de couleur tous le 14 ronds. J’ai fait 43 ronds puis changé à des aiguilles plus fines pour le point de côtes. J’ai encore consulté Techknitter pour sa méthode améliorée de rabattre au milieu d’un rang, rabattant en point mousse comme décrit par fiddlerbird555 ici (pour la bordure, tricoter la maille à l’endroit, ne pas la glisser). J’aime que cette façon de rabattre crée un petit bord comme celle d’une casquette. J’ai fait les rangs raccourcis selon le modèle, mais me retournant à des points différents à cause de mon total de mailles plus important. Pour le deuxième bonnet, j'ai fait presque le même, sauf que j'ai fait un fond à 90 mailles au lieu de 96. Je n'ai pas trop entendu des Alaskans, mais FC adore son bonnet encore, un an plus tard. Et il va toujours sur ses cheveux volumineux, presque sans aplatir sa coiffure !

My husband's cousin had said that her daughter, M, refused to wear hats that attach under the chin. Since they live in Alaska, a hat that covers the ears and stays on well is very important, however. I wanted to give M something that would address these concerns, and be comfortable and fun for a little girl to wear. After a long search on Ravelry, I found a pattern I loved, Toasty Topper, a design by Alexis Riggs that was in the Winter 2007 Knitty.

What color to make it? My younger daughter, a bit older than M, had been asking for a rainbow colored hat. So I decided to make two, so that the little cousins separated by a continent could have matching hats in common. For yarn, I used Malabrigo for all except the green, which is O-wool.

Time to cast on! I used Techknitter's "belly button" method, casting on 6 stitches. I gradually increased to 96 st in total, changing color every 14 rounds to make the stripes. After 43 rounds I changed to one size smaller needles for the ribbing section. For the face opening, I used techknitter's help again for an "improved bind off in the middle of a fabric." I combined that with a 3 stitch garter stitch bind off, knitting (not slipping) the edge stitches, see fiddlerbird555's post here. I like that this bind off creates a bit of a brim. I did the short rows along the lines of the pattern directions, but turning at different points as I had a different number of stitches. The second hat was almost identical, except I only increased to 90 stitches total for the crown. Not much feedback from Alaska, but FC loves her hat still as I write, one year later. And it still fits her big hair, with virtually no hat head!

Si mes bonnets rayés étaient du coté vif et délirant, j'ai aussi tenté le beau et l'élégant pour Noël 2009. J'avais de la laine soyeuse et lumineuse de String Theory, à Blue Hill aux alentours de Penobscot Bay au Maine, non loin d'Isle au Haut, où j'ai passé quelque jours de vacances avec MA lors de notre anniversaire de marriage. Le voici, profitant de la vue de la maison où nous sommes restés. Les troncs d'arbres enlacés étaient au bout sud-est de l'ile, dans une forêt aplatie par un orage il y a quelques ans.

Besides the lively tumult of the striped hats, I also tried for some beauty and elegance at Christmas 2009. I had some silky soft, luminous yarn from String Theory, in Blue Hill in the Penobscot Bay region in Maine, close to Isle au Haut, where I spent a few days with MA for our wedding anniversary. Here he is is enjoying the view from the house where we stayed. The intertwined tree trunks were at the southeast end of the island, in a forest flattened by a storm a few years prior.

J'ai fait le Branching Out, simple mais charmant, de Susan Lawrence, en mérinos-soie d'une couleur bleu-grise apellée "Mount Hood", pour NMB. Pour ma sœur, j'ai refait Branching Out, cette fois en 100% mérinos de couleur "teal" (je ne vois pas d'équivalent français, si ce n'est pas turquoise, mais comme vous voyez c'est une couleur plus foncée que ce que nous apellerons "turquoise" en anglais), mais si doux et coulant que c'est difficile de croire qu'il n'y a pas de soie.

I made Susan Lawrence's simple, lovely Branching Out scarf, in "Mount Hood," a blueish gray merino-silk blend, for NMB. For my sister, I made another Branching Out in teal, 100% merino but so soft and flowing it's hard to believe there's not silk in it.

A very stripey Christmas - Des rayures pour Noël

Comme vous voyez peut-être, je remets mon blog à jour après un long silence. Comme c'est mon bloc-notes de réflections sur mes réalisations, j'essaye de dire quelque chose sur tout que j'ai fait, même si c'est d'un passé assez lointain. Aujourd'hui je documente le bouquet de bonnets que j'ai tricoté pour Noël 2009 : un bonnet à rayures pour chacun de mes trois neveux et cinq nièces. Pour RAB, qui avait 14 ans et s'intéresse à l'histoire militaire, c'était des couleurs rapellant le camouflage, utilisant le modèle Scrap-happy Celebration Hat de Cosette Cornelius-Bates. Pour tous les bonnets que j'ai fait sur ce modèle, j’ai caché les bouts de laine en les passant de façon de cacher les changements de couleurs, voir la photo de droite. Aussi, au début du deuxième rond de point jersey en chaque couleur, la première maille a été tricotée ensemble avec celle en-dessous d’elle.

Scrap-happy for RAB 2

As you may have noticed, I'm bringing my blog up to date after a long silence. Since it's also my notebook to reflect on my projects, I try to make an entry for each of them, even if it's from very long ago. Today's subject is the set of hats I made for Christmas 2009: a striped hat for each of my three nephews and five nieces. RAB was 14 years old and has a strong interest in military history, so I made his hat in camo-inspired colors, following Cosette Cornelius-Bates' Scrap-happy Celebration Hat pattern. To smooth the color jogs in all the scrap-happy hats: when I wove in the ends, I linked together the first/last stitch of each color with the one next to it in the row above/below, respectively, see photo on the right. And for each new color, on the first stitch of the second row of stockinette stitch, I knit together that first stitch and the one below it.

Nicholas et James, respectivement amateur de zebres de 8 ans, et amateur de tigres de 6 ans, ont recu ces bonnets scrap-happy de couleurs inspirés par ces animaux (à droite, portés par ma fille FA).

Four Ribbed Beanies

Striped Scarves

Pour mes nièces, EKG (7 ans), JAC (6 ans), SLG (5 ans), et CMC (4 ans), j'ai utilisé le modèle Men's Striped Hat and Scarf, du livre Holiday Knits de Sara Lucas et Allison Isaacs. La laine, le Cestari Fine Merino, m'a ssurpris par sa douceur, ayant une apparence un peu rude. J'ai modifié le modèle pour enfant en montant 72 mailles, sauf pour le bonnet rose/lavande où j'ai monté 76 mailles. J’ai commencé les diminutions à 12cm au lieu de 14cm. J'avais prévu les écharpes assortis, mais le temps manquait. Enfin, en l'automne de 2010, j'ai fini deux écharpes destinées à EKG et SLG. J'ai suivi le modèle, sauf que j'ai monté 26 mailles, et dans la section de couleur unie, j’ai glissé la premiere maille de chaque rang pour faire une lisière.

For my nieces, EKG (7 years old), JAC (6), SLG (5), and CMC (4), I used a surprisingly soft merino yarn, Cestari Fine Merino. I used the Men's Striped Hat and Scarf pattern, from Holiday Knits by Sara Lucas and Allison Isaacs. I modified it for child size by only casting on 72 stitches (except 76 for the pink/lavender hat). I began the crown decreases at about 4 3/4" instead of 5 1/2". I had planned to make the matching scarves, but didn't have the time. Finally, in the fall of 2010, I completed two scarves. I followed the pattern exactly, except I made them 26 stitches wide, and in the solid section I slipped the first stitch of each row to make a selvedge.

Cette laine était un coup de cœur pour moi. J'ai improvisé pour faire une écharpe en point de mousse sur le biais (modèle disponible en anglais et en français ici sur Ravelry), pour mieux le mettre en évidence ; mais j'ai été surprise à la fin de me rendre compte que ces couleurs je j'adore ne me vont pas du tout ! Heureusement ils flattaient une de mes belles-cousines, alors j'ai insisté qu'elle l'accepte. J'espère qu'elle prend autant de plaisir à le porter que j'ai pris à travailler avec cette belle laine.

I fell in love with this yarn, improvised a diagonal garter stitch scarf (pattern is downloadable in English or French here on Ravelry) to show it off to best advantage, then found to my surprise that the colors I loved so much didn't look good on me. Fortunately it looked great on a cousin, so I insisted she accept it and hope she's enjoying wearing it as much as I enjoyed working with this beautiful palette.

Chaussettes Rushing Rivulet

Rushing Rivulet, je le trouve difficile à traduire, peut-être «Ruisselet en flux» ? En tout cas, un modèle de Cat Bordhi de son New Pathways for Sock Knitters, Book One, que j'ai fait pour ma fille ainée. C'est un modèle qui commence au bout du pied, voici le début, et la paire complète :

Pour faire l'ourlet en picot, j'ai du le replier et le greffer à l'intérieru de la chaussette, voir dans ces photos l'essentiel des manœuvres à faire.

To make the picot hem, I had to fold it over and graft it to the inside of the sock, see the basic maneuvers in the photos above.

Voici la layette que j'ai fait pour la fille de ma cousine. J'ai commencé avec l'idée de faire le Moss Stitch Hat, Scarf, and Blanket de Debbie Bliss, de son The Baby Knits Book. Quand je finissais le bonnet, c'était le moment où je découvrais le travail très intéressant d'Hélène Magnússon, alors j'ai substitué pour l'écharpe, Écharpe rétro aux roses islandaises, pour la couverture, l'idée de faire une océan de point de riz en une couleur ne me plaisait pas, et en cherchant les modèles genre "log cabin" j'ai trouvé Trinity Log Cabin de Tanya Brooks (Indigo Muse), qui me donnait une couverture traditionnelle et moderne en même fois.

Here's an ensemble I made for my cousin's baby girl. I started out wanting to make the Moss Stitch Hat, Scarf, and Blanket by Debbie Bliss, from her The Baby Knits Book. At the time I was completing the hat, I had just seen Hélène Magnússon's very interesting work, so instead of the moss stitch scarf, I made her Vintage scarf with Icelandic roses. Then, for the blanket, the idea of an ocean of moss stitch in one color didn't appeal, and while looking at log cabin style patterns, I found Tanya Brooks' (Indigo Muse) Trinity Log Cabin which I love as it is a blanket both traditional and modern at the same time.

J'ai omis de bloguer sur ces deux travaux, accomplis lors de nos vacances de Pâques, l'avril dernier, à Forcalquier. Ma petite famille a rejoint mes parents et la famille de ma sœur, pour une semaine. Nous avons loué une maison, qui était jadis une synagogue a quelque pas du centre ville. Maman m'a aidé à finir ces petits lapins en alpaga (Knitted bunny de Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer), une pour chacune des petites cousines (mes deux filles, et les deux filles de ma sœur).

Somehow I neglected to blog on these two projects, made during our Easter vacation, last April, in Forcalquier. My little family joined my parents and my sister's family for a week. We rented a house, that long a go was synagogue, near the center of the city. Maman helped me finish these little alpaca rabbits (Knitted bunny by Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer), one for each of the little cousins (my two daughters and my sister's two daughters).

Puis j'ai pris mon Malabrigo bien-aimé, et j'ai passé le temps en route à Lurs, et des moments sur la plage à Sainte-Croix du Verdun, a accomplir ce boléro (Anthropologie Inspired Capelet par Julia Allen) pour ma sœur.

Then I took up my well-loved Malabrigo, and made this bolero (Anthropologie Inspired Capelet by Julia Allen) for my sister while driving to Lurs, and sitting on the beach at Sainte Croix du Verdun.

J'ai profité du voyage pour m'acheter des coquetiers à Moustiers, que ma gentille sœur a complété avec ce petit picher.

On the same trip, I bought myself a set of egg cups in Moustiers, and my sister sweetly gave me a matching pitcher.

Chaussettes fille - Girl socks

J'ai passé la dernière semaine de juin à échantilloner plusieurs laines pour chaussettes. J'ai une petite cousine de 2 ans et demi qui déménage en Alaska, j'avais déja fait des moufles pour sa maman, maintenant il était temps de protéger les petits orteils de la fille. J'ai choisi le Schachenmayr Regia en rayures bleues, comme pas trop garçon ni trop fille. J'ai commencé avec le bout de pied "moccasin" de Cat Bordhi, selon son modèle Foxglove, sur 2 aiguilles circulaires.

I spent the last week in June making swatches of various sock yarns. I have a 2 1/2 year old cousin who's moving to Alaska, I'd already made mittens for the mother, and now it was time to protect the daughter's little toes. I chose blue-striped Schachenmayr Regia as neither too boyish nor girlish. I began with Cat Bordhi's "moccasin toe," following the Foxglove master pattern, on 2 circular needles at once.

Bonnet Tourbillons - Swirls Hat

MA a longtemps admiré le Swirls Hat de Carolyn Doe. Pour jouer avec la laine Mostly Merino, et voir les couleurs, j'ai entrepris ce bonnet pour lui. Ça commence avec un traitement comme un galon que j'aime bien, le voici en cours :

MA marked Carolyn Doe's Swirls Hat as something he liked a long time ago. To play some with the Mostly Merino wool, and see how the colors are, we decided to make the hat for him. It starts with a braid-like motif that I like very much, here it is in progress.

Et maintenant, le voici fini, porté par FA. Puis qu'il va si bien, ça n'étonnerait pas d'entendre qu'il est trop petit pour MA !

And here it is finished, modeled by FA. As it fits her well, it's no surprise that it's too small for MA!

Alors j'ai défait juste dessous du deuxième galon, détricoté la bande de tourbillons, et retricoté avec six rangs de plus, grâce à des rajout en bas et en haut de la grille du dessin. Le voici en train d'être regreffé ensemble, et dessous, la version finale. Par ce que c'est en jaquard, il n'y a pas autant d'élasticité que je voudrais, on va voir si sa serre assez la tête pour ne pas s'envoler lorsque le vent commence à souffler.

So I unraveled it just below the second braid, and re-knit it 6 rows longer, by adding 3 rows before the beginning and after the end of the pattern chart. Here it is, above, as I regraft it together, and, below, the final version. Because it's stranded, it's not as elastic as I'd like, we will see if it holds to the head well enough not to fly off when the wind starts to blow.

J'ai travaillé pas mal sur mon cardigan Acer (modèle de Kirsten Kapur, de Through the Loops Designs) aux mois de juin, juillet, et août, entre autres travaux, par exemple quand ma série interminable d'échantillons du Mostly Merino séchait. Je suis arrivée aux manches, ayant tricoté le corps du haut jusqu'en bas en un morceau. Il est dans le tiroir de mon bureau au travail ( il est prudent d'avoir des «tricot de secours» un peu partout, nest-ce pas ? ), alors pas de photo récente, mais le voici quand je venais de finir l'empiècement, le 21 juin.

I worked on my Acer cardigan (design by Kirsten Kapur, of Through the Loops Designs) a fair amount in June, July, and August, between other projects, such as when my endless series of Mostly Merino swatches was drying. I've gotten as far as the sleeves, having knitted the body from top to bottom in one piece. It's in my desk drawer at work (it's wise to keep "emergency knitting projects" in a variety of places, don't you think?), so no recent photos, but here it is when I had just finished the yoke, on June 21st.

Pour résumer ce temps passé mais pas perdu, car j'ai bien travaillé même si je n'ai rien écrit :
The time may have passed but it wasn't wasted, as I got plenty of work done despite not writing about it. The summary:

1. Je voulais recommencer le pull auquel j'ai dernièrement fait référence ici. Il n'y avait pas assez de laine, alors j'ai acheté tout un tas de ceci, en solde à Webs, et j'ai fait et lavé un échantillon pour que MA puisse juger si ça gratte ou non.

Classic Elite Bazic Wool

1. I wanted to restart the sweater last mentioned here. I didn't have enough yarn for it, so I bought a huge quantity of this, on sale at Webs, and I made a swatch and washed it, so MA could decide whether it is scratchy.

2. Pendant que l'échantillon séchait, j'ai repris et fini les chaussettes commencées d'une longue tube. Après point de côtes 2 m end, 1 m env, j'ai fini avec une petite fantaisie de rabattage, le Sea Anemone Cuff de Cat Bordhi (de New Pathways for Sock Knitters). J'ai suivi les conseils de Elizabeth Zimmerman dans son Knitting without Tears pour le talon "afterthought." On COUPE (!) les fils au milieu de la chaussette, on défait un peu, puis on tricote éssentiellement comme un nouveau bout de pied, là où on voudrait le talon. Je l'ai placé trop haut au premier essai, et j'ai dû le refaire, mais tout est bien qui finit bien !

2. While my swatch dried, I picked up and finished the socks that start as one long tube. After k2p1 ribbing, I finished with the very decorative Sea Anemone Cuff from Cat Bordhi's New Pathways for Sock Knitters. I followed instructions from Elizabeth Zimmerman's Knitting without Tears for the Afterthought heel. One CUTS (!) the yarn in the middle of the sock, unravels a bit, then one knits a new "toe," just where one would like the heel to be. I placed it too high the first time, so I had to re-knit the first spot and cut a second spot, but all's well that ends well!

3. MA a décidé que le Bazic Wool gratte trop. Nous avons passé une fin d'après-midi avec la très sympa Margaret Klein Wilson et ses moutons (qui produisent sa laine Mostly Merino, qu'elle teint à merveille), et nous sommes partis avec ceux-ci pour faire des échantillons et décider s'ils grattent :

3. MA decided the Bazic is too scratchy. We spent a late afternoon with the very generous Margaret Klein Wilson and her sheep (who produce her Mostly Merino wool, which she then dyes in a ravishing array of colors), and left with these to swatch and try out for softness.

4. Encore une fois, un échantillon (plus jaune qu'il ne paraît dans la photo) devait sécher. Le Bazic Wool ne me gêne pas du tout, alors j'ai fait un échantillon pour le cardigan Acer pour moi-même.

4. Once again, a swatch (yellower than it looks in the photo) had to dry. The Bazic Wool doesn't bother me, so I swatched for the Acer cardigan for myself.

Mon dernier projet du Noël dernier (je ne compte pas le bas non fini, car il est maintenant pour le Noël prochain) est enfin fini ! J'ai du faire du retricotage du premier - il était vraiment trop grand, et les fils qui passait derrière était trop serré la première fois - mais le deuxième était assez vite fini. C'est pour une cousine, qui déménagerai cette année de la Bolivie à l'Alaska. J'ai utilisé le modèle 6-5 de Magnificent Mittens pour la main, et le 6-4 pour le poignet. J'ai fait le 6-5 une fois avant, avec un poignet simple de point de côtes. Quelle différence !

My last project from this past Christmas (not counting the unfinished stocking, since it's now for next Christmas) is finally done! I had to do some reknitting of the first one - it was too big, and the strands behind the work were too tight the first time - but the second mitten went fairly quickly. It's for a cousin, who will move this year from Bolivia to Alaska. I used the Magnificent Mittens pattern 6-5 for the hand, and 6-4 for the wrist. I did 6-5 once before, with a simple ribbed cuff. What a difference!

J'ai interrompu mes efforts de finir avec mes projets de Noël pour faire trois bonnets.
I interrupted my efforts to finish my Christmas projects to make three hats.

Du coté sérieux, une membre de ma famille doit subir une chimiothérapie, alors j'ai voulu lui faire quelques bonnets. Je n'ai pas l'habitude de tricoter avec le coton, mais point de vue confort ça me semblait le meilleur choix de laine. J'ai trouvé dans une boutique de laine près de chez moi le Dyed Cotton de Blue Sky Alpacas, une laine biologique et très douce. Pour quelque chose de joli, j'ai choisi mon vieil ami Foliage, en bleu « indigo ».
On the serious side, a family member must undergo chemotherapy, so I wanted to make her some hats. I'm not used to knitting with cotton, but comfort wise it seemed like the best choice. At my LYS, I found Blue Sky Alpacas Dyed Cotton, a wonderfully soft organic cotton yarn from Peru. Wanting to make something pretty, I chose an old favorite design, Foliage, in "indigo" blue.

Puis, je pensais que si la dentelle s'ouvre trop, on verrait son scalp, et en été, elle risquerait les coups de soleil, alors j'ai fait un deuxième bonnet, de la même laine en bleu « periwinkle » sur le modèle Bucket Hat de Bonne Marie Burns.
I was concerned that if the lace stretched too much, her scalp might be visible, and in summer, she'd risk being sunburned, so I made a second hat, in the same yarn but "periwinkle" blue, using Bonne Marie Burns' Bucket Hat design.

Du coté joie, une cousine vient de donner naissance à une petite fille. Le samedi dernier nous sommes allés faire la connaissance de la belle, qui était venu faire visite à sa grand-mère. On the joyful side, a cousin has just had a baby girl. Last Saturday we got to go meet the beauty, who had come to visit her grandmother. En route, I cast on for a Baby Hat (Leigh Radford's pattern), and 22 hours later I snipped the yarn (back at home again,so I'll have to give it to her by mail, as she lives too far away to see her soon).

Quelle surprise de trouver cette petite enveloppe, avec cette jolie petite pièce dedans, dans mon courrier ! Un grand merçi à Zaz ! Elle a trouvé une façon bien gentille de me remercier, après que je lui ai donné mon bonnet Amanda qui n'était pas bien réussi pour mes buts, qu'elle voudrait détricoter et refaire en Foliage. Ce collier est si mignon ! (maquillage chien à l'occasion d'un petit festival des arts à Brattleboro, au Vermont).

Fils en poussière - Ends of yarn

J'ai été intriguée par l'idée du «SAL» (stitch along) Fil en poussière de Séverine, du blog OrchidetTricot. Alors, j'ai commencé mon bocal de laine (choisissant une bouteille de vinaigre), un peu en retard. L'idée est de collectionner touts mes bouts de laine ici pendant un an, en compagnie aves des autres adhérentes du SAL, et de partager mes photos du bocal dans mon blog a chaque nouvelle lune.

La dernière nouvelle lune était le 25 février ; ces photos sont faits le 17 février, et je n'ais eu rien à ajouter depuis.

I was intrigued by Séverine's Fil en poussière "SAL" (stitch along), on her blog OrchidetTricot. So, I started my yarn jar (I chose a vinegar bottle), a bit late. The idea is to collect in it all my yarn clippings for a year, along with all the other members of the the SAL, and to share photos of my yarn bottle in my blog with each new moon.

The last new moon was February 25th ; these photos were taken February 17th, and I haven't added to it since.

Knitting up a storm

Le 18 décembre était la veille de la fête de Noël de mon bureau, et je n'avais rien à offrir.

Nous fesons ce qu'on apelle « Yankee Swap » : chaque personne apporte un cadeau emballé. Chaque personne est donnée un numéro. Personne #1 choisit un cadeau et enlève l'emballage. Personne #2 choisit quelque chose et enlève l'emballage, puis peut soit garder le cadeau, soit faire un échange pour celui de #1. Personne #3 et les autres font la même chose, toujours avec le choix de garder leur cadeau, ou faire un échange pour n'importe quel cadeau qui a déja été ouvert. À la fin, #1 a aussi le choix de faire un échange. Un objet donné ne peut être échangé que trois fois, puis celui qui l'a peut le garder définitivement.

Alors, que faire ? J'ai parcouru Ravelry et choisi le Hurricane Hat ( « Bonnet Ouragan » ), et ma laine de Wind-GaitFarm, car je pensais que les bleus panachés (dit-on cela?) avançaient le thème de l'ouragan, et iraient aussi bien pour homme ou pour femme. C'était fait en une nuit (sans trop dormir !) et voila.

Je l'ai tant aimé que j'ai fait un deuxième pour un cousin par alliance, pour Noël. Identique sauf un peu plus long (5cm de côtes, total de 14cm d'hauteur avant de diminuer) car je trouvais le premier trop petit pour un adulte.

Hurricane Hat

December 18th was the night before my office's annual Christmas Party, and I didn't have a gift.

We do a Yankee Swap: everyone brings a wrapped gift. Everyone is assigned a number. Person #1 chooses something and unwraps. #2 chooses something and unwraps, then decides whether to keep what he/she got, or swap for what #1 got. #3 to the end do the same (unwrap, then keep or swap for anything anyone before them got), then #1 gets a chance to swap at the end. Any given item can only be swapped 3 times, after that, whoever has it will keep it.

So, what to do? I looked all over Ravelry and chose the Hurricane Hat, and my Wind-Gait Farm yarn, because I thought the variegated blues went along with the hurricane theme, and would suit a man or woman. I managed to finish it in one night (without too much sleep!) and here it is.

I liked it so much I made a second one for my cousin-on-law for Christmas. I made it identical except a bit bigger (2 inches of ribbing, 5 inches before beginning decreases) as the first wasn't quite big enough for an adult.

Bas de Noël

Partant de Boston, j'ai eu la chance de passer par Porter Square Books et racheter une copie de Knitting on the Road de Nancy Bush (j'ai perdu ma première). Ceci après avoir fouillé trois magasins de laine en Boston et Cambridge en vaine. Je le voulais pour le patron de bas de Noël Christmas in Talinn, que j'avais fait une fois, en 2002. J'ai vite fait de monter mes mailles, en Wild West Weaver Fine Singles, acheté au Connecticut Sheep and Wool Festival, tenant 2 fils ensemble. Pas si vite à finir, mais sans avoir à me soucier du syndrome de la deuxième chaussette, j'ai pu finir juste avant Thanksgiving (fin novembre). FA a choisi les couleurs, mauve n'est pas ma première pensée comme couleur de bas de Noël, mais ça a fini par être beau et d'aller bien avec la saison, je pense.

Christmas in Talinn 2

Leaving Boston, I was lucky enough to stop in at Porter Square Books and bought another copy of Knitting on the Road byNancy Bush (I lost my first one). This was after I'd searched in 3 different yarn stores in Boston and Cambridge, in vain. I wanted it for the Christmas in Talinn stocking pattern, which I made once before, in 2002. Not long after I was casting on, with Wild West Weaver Fine Singles, purchased at the Connecticut Sheep and Wool Festival, holding 2 strands together. It took some time to finish, but with not a care for second sock syndrome, I finished just before Thanksgiving (the end of November). FA chose the colors, the mauve was a surprise but worked out to be very beautiful, and appropriate to the winter season, I thought.

Chaussettes

Aussi à la conférence de médecine générale, j'ai fait des avances avec mes Chaussettes en rond sur 2 DP. Toute la méthode se trouve dans le Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook. L'idée est de monter suffisament de mailles pour faire un tube, puis les arranger tous sur UNE aiguille à deux bouts. En tricotant et glissant les mailles en alternance, on arrive à faire un tube.

Quand c'était assez long j'ai séparé le travail en 2 tubes de longeur égale. J'ai tricoté des bouts de pieds, puis j'ai commencé sur chaque tube un point de côtes 2m end-1m env.

Puis je l'ai mis à coté pour commencer mes projets de Noël, alors la suite sera dans plusieurs mois je pense...

Also at the Primary Care Internal Medicine conference, I made some progress on my Socks in the round on 2 DPN. The technique is all in the Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook. The idea is to cast on enough stitches for a tube, then arrange them all on ONE double-pointed needle. By alternately knitting or slipping the stitches, one makes a tube.

When it was long enough, I separated the work into 2 tubes of equal length. I knit the toes, then I began k2-p1 rib on each tube, for the cuffs.

Then I put the whole project aside so I could start my Christmas projects, so the next installment will probably be in several months...

La semaine du 20 octobre j'étais à une conférence médicale, très bonne d'ailleurs. J'ai profité de toutes ces heures assises pour faire un carré pour un plaid que Sairy (du Ravelry Welcome Wagon) voudrait faire pour des amis qui ont eu un bébé mort avant la naissance. J'ai choisi ce modèle pour les cœurs, chacun lié aux autres. Ce n'est pas mal, mais je trouve que les mailles autour des cœurs y tirent un peu trop dessus. Peut-être si je participait au programme de maitrise de tricot, on me dirait quoi faire différemment. Je songe vraiment à faire le programme un jour, car je voudrais bien pouvoir produire quelque chose un peu plus professionnel en apparence.

The week of October 20th I was at a medical conference (a very good one, too). I took advantage of all those hours glued to my chair to make a square for a blanket Sairy (of the Ravelry Welcome Wagon) wants to assemble for some friends who had a stillborn baby. I chose this pattern because of the linked hearts. It came out ok, but I think the stitches around the hearts put a little too much tension on them. Maybe if I did the master knitter program, those experts would tell me how to do it differently. I am really considering doing the program at some point, I'd like to be able to make my projects a little more professional appearing.

J'avais acheté 2 petites pelotes d'alpaga bleu clair au marché qui continuaient à m'appeller, nous partions pour le weekend et je venais de finir les gants alors je n'avait plus de projet, je suivait le KAL Irène car je suis modératrice pour Mélusine's friends... alors en 10 minutes je me suis décidée de faire Irène, mais en forme de col car je n'avais que les deux pelotes, et j'ai vu un col dans One Skein qui me plaisait.

J'ai fait le modèle Écharpe Irène de Mélusine, modifiant en éliminant une torsade de coté et les bords (m env, m end, m env) et tricotant en rond. 4 rangs de côtes 1/1 au début et à la fin, montage tubulaire, rabattage tubulaire (kitchener stitch).

Voici en cours le 8 octobre, et puis fini le 11.

I had bought 2 small skeins of light blue alpaca from Sunmeadow Alpacas at the Brattleboro Farmers' Market that kept calling out to me, we were leaving for the weekend and I had just finished the gloves so had no project, I was following the Irène Scarf KAL because I'm a moderator for Mélusine's friends... so in the space of 10 minutes I decided to make Irène, but as a neck gaiter, because I only had the two skeins, and I'd seen a gaiter in One Skein that I liked.

From Mélusine's Irene Scarf pattern, I eliminated a column of cable and the edges and made it in the round. 4 rows of 1/1 rib at beginning and end. Tubular cast-on and cast-off (aka kitchener stitch for the cast off).

La fraîcheur de l'automne

À peu près la moitié des arbres ont déja changé de couleurs, et la fraîcheur de l'automne devient de plus en plus prononcée. Ce matin fait la deuxième fois que je mette des moufles sur les mains de ma FC. Pas pour elle, mais pour Papa, juste à temps, j'ai fini les Good Basic Gloves (voir mon post précédent pour les détails), et je les lui ai donnés le week-end passé. Même dans un point qui mélange mailles à l'endroit et mailles à l'envers, l'alpaga est si lisse qu'il va peut-être vouloir du cuir cousu à la paume pour mieux pouvoir tenir les choses, on va voir.

About half the trees have changed colors, and the chill of autumn increases every day. This morning, for the second time, I put mittens on FC. Not for her but for Papa, just in time, I finished the Good Basic Gloves (see previous post about them for details), and gave them to him last week-end. Even though the stitch pattern is textured with a mix of knits and purls, the alpaca is so smooth that he may want some leather sewn onto the palms to improve his grip, we'll see.

La rentrée / Back to school

Tous les deux chauffe-épaules HugMe sont finis, le 29 août! Le multicolore est pour E, la niece ainée, et le rose, pour S, la niece cadette. Ils sont modelées par FA et FC, qui sont de presque la même taille que E et S. Les tailles sont à-peu-près 6 ans (multicolore, Supersock Merino) et 4 ans (rose, Gioiello). Modification du patron pour le 6-ans: aiguilles 6mm, suivant le patron comme écrit. Modification pour le 4-ans: aiguilles 6.5mm ; 4 jetés / 4 mailles ens. à la fois au lieu de 6 ; 3 répétitions du motif à travers le dos ; 2 répétitions du motif à travers la manche.

I finished both HugMe shrugs August 29th! The variegated one is for E., the elder of my nieces, the pink one, for S., the younger. Modeled by FA and FC, who are about the same size as E and S. Made in a 6T size for E in Supersock Merino, and 4T size for S in Gioiello. Modifications: 6T: US 10 needles, following pattern as written. 4T: US 10 1/2 needles; 4 yo / 4 k2tog per motif instead of 6; 3 repeats of the motif across the back; 2 repeats across the sleeve.

Aussi le 29 août, FC a eu son premier jour à l'école. L'aventure commence! FA va à la même école et a commencé sa deuxième année là le 2 septembre. C'est une école Montessori, il y a deux classes de 3-4-5 ans ensemble, FA est dans une, FC dans l'autre. Et, le mercredi, nous avons invités chez nous pour la première fois (oui, nous sommes un peu timides de faire voir notre maison un peu désorganisée!) la copine préferée de FA, et tout est passé très bien.

Also August 29th, FC had her first day of school. The adventure begins! FA goes to the same school, and started her 2nd year there on September 2nd. It's a Montessori school, with two 3-4-5 year old mixed classrooms; FA is in one class, FC in the other. And then Wednesday, we had FA's favorite friend from school over to play for the first time (yes, we're a little shy to let people see our rather disorganized home!), and it went very well.

Début aoút, j'ais pris des vacances, alors je me suis inscrite aux Ravelympics, avec Team French, l'équipe francaise / francophone bien sur. J'ai commencé avec une paire de chauffe-épaules du même patron HugMe que j'avais utilisé pour le premier. C'est pour le concours de Gift Knits Pentathlon. Pour m'amuser, je les fais en même temps, en "tricot synchronisé."

I had vacation in early August, so I signed up for the Ravelympics, for Team French naturally. I started with a pair of shrugs using the same HugMe pattern I used for the earlier one. I entered them in the Gift Knits Pentathlon. For fun, I'm doing them both at the same time, as "synchronized knitting."

Quand j'ai fini les chauffe-épaules, je reprendrais les gants pour le "WIP Wrestling." Et au cas où je les finis avant la fin des Jeux Olympiques, je me suis inscrit finalement dans le "Sock Put," pour faire des chaussettes pour moi avec ma laine White Birch, mais je n'ai pas encore choisi un patron. Quel été!

When I've finished the shrugs, I'll pick up the gloves for the "WIP Wrestling" event. And in case I finish them before the end of the Olympics, I've signed up for the "Sock Put" also, and can make something with my White Birch wool. Now that's a summer.

Toujours en juin, j'ai commencé les gants que j'avais promis à mon père lors de son anniversaire dernier, en laine d'alpaga pour lui garder bien chaud les mains, car il souffre du phénomène de Raynaud. J'utilise un brin chacun du Hand Dyed Worsted et Hand Paint Lace de Misti International. Le patron s'appelle "Good Basic Gloves" et se trouve dans Homespun Handknit. Ce projet aussi j'ai du arrêter pour un moment, car en juillet je bossais bien trop, je ne trouvais pas de temps à tricoter.

Still in June, I began a pair of gloves that I gave my father an IOU for at his last birthday. They're alpaca, to keep his hands nice and warm, as he has Raynaud's phenomenon. I'm using one strand each of Misti International's Hand Dyed Worsted and Hand Paint Lace. The pattern is "Good Basic Gloves" from Homespun Handknit. I ended up putting this project on hold for a while also, as I was working a lot in July and couldn't find much time to knit.
