Santa Barbara Sandstone is a beautiful locally sourced option!

Santa Barbara Sandstone, locally sourced from Southern California, is an excellent building and landscape stone. Santa Barbara sandstone is not ‘quarried’, but rather ‘harvested’ as boulders. The stone is popular with masons, because it responds well to hand or machine fabrication. The colors and textures of ‘SBS’ are predominantly a unique buff with golden variation in hues from tans to gold.

Architects specify Santa Barbara sandstone “rubble” for example, to re-create the look of Old-World, Tuscany, French Country and Spanish Colonial architecture. SBS remains popular and recognizable on many prominent public buildings and residences in Southern California.

The choice to use locally sourced stone, such as Santa Barbara Sandstone for your custom home or hardscape/ landscape design can be advantageous for several reasons:

Local Santa Barbara Sandstone is sustainable

Santa Barbara Sandstone is a natural stone that is harvested as boulders directly beneath the surface. This is done primarily on excavation sites which means it is sourced without harming the environment. Natural stone is an attractive material that will outlive most structures built today. In some cases it can be salvaged from one building to be reused or re-purposed in another. Locally sourced stone has all the attributes of a green product. It requires almost no chemicals to produce or maintain, it emits no VOCs or hazardous airborne pollutants and it is water-resistant and durable.

Local Santa Barbara Sandstone is environmentally friendly

When natural stone is used for building purposes we believe it is a better environmental choice over options made from man-made or concrete material. If having an environmentally responsible building or landscape is important to you, you may want to inquire as to whether your project meets the guidelines set by “SITES” for landscape design or “LEED” for building.

One of the qualifiers for meeting “green” building guidelines can be attained if local stone is quarried within 500 miles of the building site. Santa Barbara Sandstone is harvested from the same region it draws its name from. And, throughout the U.S., today’s natural stone quarries do their best to quarry and produce stone products in an environmentally supportive way. Conserving resources, preventing pollution, and minimizing waste are some ways the stone industry is working to be eco-friendly through green building.

Local Santa Barbara Sandstone is more economical

By using local stone, you may benefit from cost savings. Regionally manufactured and extracted materials cost less to deliver to your project. Also, locally sourced stone may reduce environmental impact by reducing emissions of greenhouse gasses during transportation of the materials.

Local stone adds a classic look to your landscape or home that you’ll appreciate for years to come. We would be pleased to provide you with stone local to your area such as the Santa Barbara Sandstone.

Monarch Stone International specializes in sourcing and supplying unique stone from around the world!

Our main specialty is reclaimed antique Historic European Cobblestone. When we were contacted by Mr and Mrs Coleman, to find an authentic European cobblestone with a specific color request, we felt certain we could locate just the right stone!

Our clients are experienced and knowledgeable European travelers. On their many trips to Europe, they fell in love with the quaint cobblestone streets. Their dream was to have an authentic reclaimed European cobblestone driveway to complement their beautiful home in Missouri. And, although we have over 20 years of experience importing a beautiful array of old-world cobbles, none of our current stock from our Historic European Cobblestone collection were just the right colors they were seeking. They desired a darker, consistent color that we knew was either in the porphyry or basalt family of stones. The search was on!

Our process involved not just reaching out to our sources all over western Europe, but then sharing with our clients all the possibilities with photos. We found several interesting options. The list was narrowed down, more images submitted in both dry and wet conditions, mock-ups created, and finally actual cobblestone samples were submitted.

Then finally, the perfect match – a reclaimed antique basalt cobblestone from Germany was located, mockups approved, and several cobbles were shipped for inspection before the order was placed. In addition to the specific color request, the project required cobbles reduced to a 2” thick height for setting on a mortar base with grouted joints. We often saw-cut antique cobbles for this type of installation. Our facility in Europe will saw the bottom portion before packaging and shipping. This also saves on shipping costs.

By the time the 10,700 sf order was placed, it was early 2020. Despite the Covid pandemic and its worldwide effect on shipping, we were able to quickly prepare the cobblestone. We then engaged one of the top shippers in the world to safely deliver the 6 containers to the Colemans residence without delays.

We love a challenge, but more than this, we love happy clients! The Colemans will be reminded of their adventures and enjoy their authentic antique European driveway for the life of their home!

Client Review

“Our German basalt cobbles are now installed and we could not be happier. Although modern manufacturing capabilities have done an incredible job of replicating the “Old World” look, there is no comparison to the basalt cobbles you provided. Faith and I have been to Europe at least a dozen times. What we now have on our driveway is that same wonderful look! Because these cobbles have been used in Germany for this same purpose for over a century, we feel confident that they will withstand our harsh winter freeze/thaw cycles. We were also impressed with your concern about our installation especially after all material was shipped and you were paid. To have someone follow our project from beginning to end has given us even an even deeper peace-of-mind. We now look forward to your next Midwest visit so you can see the results.” – Dick C.

There’s a colorless, odorless, and largely benign gas that humanity just can’t get enough of. We produce 40 trillion kg of carbon dioxide each year, and we’re on track to cross a crucial emissions threshold that will cause global temperature rise to pass the dangerous 2°C limit set by the Paris climate agreement.

On a planet where global concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide are higher than at any other time in human history, the need for game-changing solutions is escalating.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, which remove tons of carbon dioxide from industrial processes and store them away so they can’t add to the climate crisis, are gaining attention and support. Scientists have shown that mineral carbonation can permanently capture and store carbon quickly enough and safely enough to rise to the challenge of climate change.

In carbon storage experiments tied to geothermal power plants in Iceland, 90% of injected carbon dioxide (CO2) transformed into minerals in just 2 years. Standard carbon storage methods can take thousands of years to do the same.

Monarch Stone International was pleased to import and supply the antique Historic European Cobblestone, reclaimed European bricks and handsome limestone curb – which can be seen winding elegantly along the curved gravel approach. The beautiful cobbles were originally installed in village and city streets in Europe 100 to 400 years ago. The top surface reveals an impressive patina that is naturally worn after centuries of exposure to weather, foot traffic, horses and carriages.

The 100+ year old hand-molded antique brick also imported from Europe, have distinct features, some with visible aggregate deposits, which add a rustic look to their natural aged beauty.

Massive sections of full height (14″ to 16″hg) antique reclaimed limestone curb in random lengths of 24″ to 60″ long were chosen to frame the long curved driveway approach to the barn and paddock area. Notably, the original chisel marks add character and charm, making this product so incredibly unique! Reclaimed curb compliments antique cobblestone and is perfect when used as raised edging and borders for protecting soft-scape and lawn.

Natural stone is one of the oldest, and certainly the most time-tested, of building materials known to man. Its beauty, durability, long life cycle and low-maintenance qualities make it the choice of many architects for commercial and institutional applications.

With a wider consumer base than ever, there are some simple, yet important, tips to know when using natural stone when it comes to proper care and maintenance.

Sealing natural stone surfaces is a decision that depends on where and how the stone is used. Depending on the stone application, a sealer may need to be applied to preserve the aesthetic of the material. Sealants on newly fabricated natural stone surfaces can work effectively to keep moisture and food/oil/stains from penetrating.

There are several categories of sealers, including color enhancing sealers that deepen and enrich the color of the stone, but do not change the surface sheen, texture or slip resistance.

With all of the variables and sealer options available, the question of “What type of sealer is best for natural stone?” should be answered by your architect, contractor or installer.

There are three main categories to consider when it comes to aesthetics.

Impregnating Sealers

First, natural-look impregnating or penetrating sealers do not change the appearance of the stone and can be used for both interior and exterior applications. These are called silanes or modified silanes and are a type of penetrating sealer, which penetrate deeply into the material, impregnating it with molecules which bond to the capillary pores. This enables the stone to repel water and / or oils from within the stone material. Some modified silane sealers impregnate deeply enough to protect against salt attack, such as efflorescence and freeze-thaw spalling.

Penetrating Sealers

Second, color enhancing sealers are extremely popular and are also impregnating or penetrating in nature. These products deepen and enrich the color of the stone, but do not change the surface sheen, texture or slip resistance. Most are designed for interior use only, but some are suitable for exterior installations.

The most penetrating sealers use siliconates, fluoro-polymers and siloxanes, which repel liquids. These sealers penetrate the surface of the stone enough to anchor the material to the surface. They are generally longer lasting than topical sealers and often do not substantially alter the look of the stone, but still can change the slip characteristics of the surface and do wear relatively quickly.

Topical Sealers

The last category is topical or coating sealers. These products can bring out some color in the stone, while providing a low- to high-sheen finish. They are generally recommended for interior applications and will change the slip resistance to a certain degree, so testing and discussion with the manufacturer is recommended to determine suitability.

Generally made from polyurethanes or acrylics, these sealers may be effective at stopping stains but, being exposed on the surface of the material, they tend to wear out relatively quickly, especially on high-traffic areas of flooring. This type of sealer will significantly change the look and slip resistance of the surface, especially when it is wet.

When you finally want your dream landscape to happen it doesn’t start with a patio, plantings, water feature or even shrubs. It starts by working with a landscape designer to create your Site Plan.

A site plan is a comprehensive plan of action intended to guide growth and development. It documents every last detail of your space. You can create a master plan for professional success, for personal growth, for a community, and you can create a master plan for your home and landscape design.

A Landscape Design Master Plan is even recommended for homeowners with smaller projects, because a design with an overarching vision is more cohesive when looked at and conceptualized broadly instead of piecemealed together. For projects that require permits and licenses, the review board members will certainly want to know if there are any other plans for the rest of the property, even if, for example, the client only intends to install the backyard this year.

A full-property plan helps both the client and the designer manage phases, expectations and resources, all while staying within a clear design vision. While the site plan is critical for the design of a landscape, most homeowners find it puzzling and difficult to understand.

This article from Houzz explains how to read and understand a Site Plan in greater detail: https://www.houzz.com/magazine/understand-your-site-plan-for-a-better-landscape-design-stsetivw-vs~34451572

The latest trends in architecture and design go beyond energy and water efficiency to now focus on ways to improve the health and wellness in our daily lives. In architecture, aesthetic decisions can be responsibly made to impact and improve people’s health and well-being.

A year or so ago, the words health and wellness were viewed differently than it does today. With health and well-being top of mind for the world, wellness-oriented spaces in both commercial and residential settings are prioritizing much more than just relaxation and pampering.

The pandemic crystallized the need we all have for mental and physical health, and we have had time to reflect on our pace of life and the impact of technology, both good and bad. This, in turn, means that architects and designers of spaces need to articulate a response that delivers on not only an aesthetic level but creates a healthy environment to alter moods and assist rejuvenation of the people who come into contact with the space we design and construct.

By implementing innovative ideas in our designs, we can serve the diverse needs of others. Architectural design can do wonders for those in need of physical and physiological health. These holistic designs deliver hope for the creation of more eco-friendly and efficient structures that provide life-changing benefits to communities around the globe.

If you have been asking, how can architecture improve health? Here are some tips from the experts: https://gbdmagazine.com/how-can-architecture-improve-health/

During the global pandemic many people have been spending a majority of their time indoors, staring at TVs, computers and cellphones while being bombarded by endless news cycles, online meetings, email and more. This has left many of us feeling the need for an outlet to disconnect from the virtual world and find new ways to connect with the natural world around us.

In this time of fear and uncertainty, people are going back to the land — more or less. Gardening might just be overtaking sourdough baking, TV binging and playing Animal Crossing as our favorite pandemic coping mechanism.

The coronavirus set off a global gardening boom that’s been compared to the Victory Gardens of World Wars I and II, in which American and British citizens grew food to support the war effort and to feed their families.

If you have been looking for ways to improve the design of your garden and outdoor space to cultivate more meaning and connection, we recommend reading this interesting Houzz article on 10 ways to connect with nature in your garden.

https://www.houzz.com/magazine/how-to-design-your-garden-for-more-meaning-and-connection

A well-planned garden design should reflect the personal style and needs of its owner, but it should also give the garden a sense of belonging within its surroundings. Spending time in the garden can awaken the senses of touch, smell, and taste, and provide an important outlet to unplug from our increasingly digital world.

If you have any creative ideas for adding a personal touch to create more connection and meaning we would love to hear from you in the comments below.

We believe memorable homes begin with the driveway!

This South Carolina estate is stunning and even more memorable with the exterior driveway and motor court design using Historic European Cobblestone.

The homeowners selected a classic historic granite cobble, in a unique 6” x 6” size-square. (It’s available in original 6” high size for sand base installations or can be sawn to 2” for setting on a mortar base.)

In addition, the design team/homeowners incorporated a large granite 6″ x 9″ rectangle cobble used for curbing/perimeter edging. This cobblestone along with all the various size cobbles we sell, originates and is reclaimed from Western Europe.

This custom South Carolina driveway and motor court was an impressive project! Overall, there were 16 containers delivered directly from Europe, with more than 19,000 sf of granite cobblestone and 3,700 linear feet of the large granite 6″ x 9″ rectangle curbing.

Installation consultation was provided on-site by Monarch Stone International co-owner Anthony Van Liefde. The Collins Group of Pendleton, South Carolina, did an impeccable job with design and installation with this incredibly unique and beautiful material.

Monarch Stone International is the leading importer and supplier of authentic antique reclaimed European cobblestone in the U.S.

For more than 20 years, our company has been the trusted source for beautiful homes and elegant hotels nationwide.

We import an extensive selection of sizes and types; traditional European squares or rectangles in granite or a very hard, dense European sandstone appropriate for all freeze/thaw conditions as well as several rare varieties; such as, beautiful Historic Sidewalk Cobble.

All our varieties are an exceptional collection of cobble and curb, originally harvested, quarried, hand trimmed and installed in village and city streets in Europe 100 to 400 years ago. The top surface is naturally weathered and worn after centuries of exposure to climate, wear and tear from foot traffic, horses and carriages. The patina is impressive and unmistakably real.

More project photos and photos of all the antique reclaimed cobblestone and curb we import can be found on our gallery: https://www.monarchstoneinternational.com/gallery/

The colors of this exquisite, reclaimed cobblestone are incredibly vibrant! You won’t find a color range like this on any other type of antique reclaimed or salvaged cobblestone or stone paver.

Our customer, Mr. and Mrs. Moskal of Howell Michigan, designed and also installed this inviting outdoor space. They selected Historic Sidewalk Cobble® (6” x 6”x 2” to 4” high) for over 900 SF of patio area.

Santa Barbara Sandstone veneer is the highlight for the exterior of this commercial building.

We supplied two truckloads of 2″ and 4” wide veneer and corners, with chopped front and back face, sawn at 7-1/2” high, with random lengths for this commercial building in Canada. The building is a standout with the large scale use of this warm yet strikingly handsome stone veneer.

Santa Barbara Sandstone is unusual in that it ‘harvested’ as boulders of varying sizes in the Santa Barbara and Montecito areas of California, rather than being cut or extracted from a quarry. Composed mainly of sand-size mineral or rock grains, most sandstone is composed of quartz and feldspar – two of the most common minerals in the earth’s crust. Like sand, it can be any color, but most commonly comes in tan, brown, yellow, red, gray and white. The Santa Barbara area sits on a geological formation which produces the famous golden or buff colored stone predominantly in boulder form. Santa Barbara Sandstone is famous for texture and workability. For over a century, it has been popular on many prominent public buildings and residences in Southern California and points beyond, such as Canada.

Monarch Stone International offers Santa Barbara Sandstone in several products including hand fabricated ‘Rubble’ and ‘Five Point’ patterns. Saw cutting and fabrication is available for dimensional pieces such as sills, coping, treads, flooring and full or thin veneers/cladding such as seen on this beautiful building. Our ability to provide your project with this handsome native California stone, is second to none.

Antique cobblestone pavers add the crowning touch to this driveway in Southern California.

Palos Verdes, California. This driveway is anything but typical. Our clients selected a classic cobblestone size: 5” x 8” x 6” rectangle but required a thinner profile for a ‘paver’ installation on their driveway. A thin antique ‘paver’ is a popular request and an available option. We begin with original reclaimed 6” high cobble and saw-cut the bottom to provide the top antique portion with a 2” thick (not gauged) version of the old original. This height is commonly used for installation over a concrete base.

The particular type of Historic European Cobblestone selected was an antique reclaimed SANDSTONE cobble. It has an earthier, warmer color range than antique reclaimed GRANITE cobblestone. Lighter colors were desired to match the exterior color palette including the beautiful local stone seen in the photo on the walls, landing and steps.

Historic European SANDSTONE Cobblestone is an extremely tight-grained stone, as hard and durable as reclaimed granite. Cobblestone has been used for centuries as street paving in Europe. There are two unique features to reclaimed sandstone cobblestone – it provides a more foot-friendly surface and has a unique, warm color range! This type of old-world cobblestone is more comfortable for walkways or patios as well as driveways and is appropriate for all freeze/thaw conditions! The inviting color range of soft grays, greens and earth tones set this variety apart. In addition, you’ll have an assortment of sizes to choose from. There are 6 different sizes available in both sandstone and granite, as well as two height options: original FULL or SAWN @ 1.5” to 2″ for mortar set applications!

“Use Natural Stone” website is a tremendous resource for information on all topics related to the use of natural stone for commercial and residential use. This recent article focuses on its environmentally friendly attributes.

As climate change impacts communities throughout the country in the form of devastating fires, massive flooding and high winds, architects, designers, and environmentally conscious homeowners are paying even more attention to the building materials they source and use than ever before. Carbon reduction targets are part of those discussions and natural stone has a larger spot at the table. Increasingly, architects and designers are looking for products that meet sustainability standards to help them make both recommendations and decisions.

Architecture firms are specializing in designing and building with sustainability in mind. Nathan Kipnis, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C, founder and principal of Kipnis Architecture + Planning, often incorporates natural stone for a number of reasons and one of them is because he seeks to create homes that are resilient and can handle both natural and man-made events.

Ultimately, architects and designers and stone specialists such as Monarch Stone International, must understand what a buyer wants in using one material over the other to meet their needs.

Why Using Natural Stone Matters

Many quartz or engineered stone products are marketed and promoted as natural stone and it creates confusion for the buyer. However, natural stone is a naturally occurring material made out of various minerals in Mother Nature’s pallet. Manmade quartz is a mixture of crushed quartz mixed with a resin and other additives that are processed and cured into a solid form or slab.”

When making a decision whether to use manmade vs natural materials, keep in mind natural stone is a chemical free material and has very low embodied carbon. When making material selections, it is important to make sure you consider the chemicals, ingredients and carbon footprint of the material.

Where you source the stone is just as important as deciding which stone to use. Stone that is locally quarried tends to fit in better with its surroundings, for example, not to mention it’s an eco-friendly option, since a significant percentage of any material’s embodied energy is from transportation.

By using local stone, the embodied energy (and therefore carbon) involved with the transportation is greatly reduced, which is especially true for such a heavy building material. Additionally, depending on the application and type of natural stone being specified and installed, it can last for 50 to 100 years or more.

For those who want to ensure the sustainability and environmental performance of natural stone, the Natural Stone Sustainability Standard (ANSI/NSC 373) is a great resource.
