Security features

Banknotes security features help you distinguish a genuine from a counterfeit banknote. Some of these security features of Albanian banknotes include:

Watermark (visible design inside the letter). Each banknote has a three-dimensional watermark, a portrait that corresponds to the main portrait of the banknote, when seen against the light.
See through register. The following denominations have a specific element called see through. It is printed on the reverse of the note and matches perfectly to the space not printed on the obverse, when seen against the light.
Raised print. Raised print is used in most visible parts of the note and has a raised surface, which is more tactile in the main texts and image.
Optically variable ink . This security feature is found in 500, 2000 and 5000 Lekë denominations. The colour of ink varies depending on the viewing angle, from violet to dark green. OVI serigraphic prevents reproduction via scanner or photocopy.
Hologram. In their obverse, 2000 and 5000 Lekë notes have a hologram, which presents different images depending on the viewing angle.
Ultraviolet properties. All denominations of the new series have surfaces printed in fluorescent ink, visible under UV light. This quality applies also to the security thread and invisible fibres.
Elements for recognition by blind or visually impaired persons.
FCO® seal. This element, found in the 1000 lekë denomination, offers two levels of security. The colour of ink changes from violet to dark green when the note is tilted. Depending on the viewing angle, one may see in the background the building of the Bank of Albania, its initials "BSH“ and the value numeral “1000”, which are stamped.

New 5000 lekë Note
		On 15 May 2009, the Bank of Albania put in circulation a 5000 Lekë note, of legal tender, issue of 2007. It retains the same design and size as the 5000 Lekë note, issue of 2001. The new banknote has additional or improved security and damage-resistant features. 		The Bank of Albania put in circulation on 29 December 2008, a new legal tender note of 2000 Lekë. Security elements: Obverse and Reverse Hologram. Depending on the viewing angle, the portrait of King Gent is alternated with the value numeral 2000. Optical variable ink. The colour of ink varies depending on the viewing angle, from violet to dark green. Signatures of the Governor and Director of Issue Department. Year of issue Security thread Watermark. 		On 14 November 2008, the Bank of Albania put in circulation a 1000 Lekë note, of legal tender, issue of 2007. It retains the same design and size as the 1000 Lekë note, issue of 2001. The new banknote has additional or improved security and damage-resistant features. The 5000 Lekë note, issued in 1996, was printed by "De La Rue". The note was reprinted by "Oberthure" banknote printing company in 2001 with improved security features and put in circulation (i.e. became legal tender) on 1 September 2004.

Obverse: Portrait of Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg, (1405-1468), a national hero - the most outstanding representative of the Albanian history, who led the Albanians against the Ottoman invaders. Other elements include the double-headed eagle, and Skanderbeg's shield and sword.

Reverse: View of Kruja Castle, Skanderbeg's helmet and equestrian statue in Tirana.

On 15 May 2009, the Bank of Albania put in circulation the 5000 Lekë note of legal tender, issue of 2007. It retains the same design and dimension as the 5000 Lekë note, issue of 2001. Security related and damage-resistant elements are improved or added to this banknote. Signatures of the Governor and Director of Issue Department as well as the year are updated.

Older 5000 Lekë notes shall continue to be legal tender and shall continue to be in circulation along with the new note, issued in 2007.

Obverse: Portrait of King Gent of Illyria (181-168 BC). He is known as a statesman, a warrior, and a scientist in medicine. Also, he enriched the treasury and had bronze coins minted with his name.

Reverse: Elements of antiquity architecture found in Albania; Gentiana lutea - a medicinal herb, whose healing properties were discovered by King Gent; stylized detail of a Liburnian ship.

Obverse: Portrait of Pjetër Bogdani (1625-1689), a writer, clergyman and distinguished figure of old Albanian literature, taken from the frontispiece of his work "Çeta e profetëve" (Cuneus prophetarum), and a symbol of the sun used in this work.

Reverse: A scheme of Pjetër Bogdani's idea on the solar eclipse from "Çeta e profetënve in the centre; View of the catholic church of Vau i Dejës on the right.

Obverse: Portrait of Ismail Qemal Bej Vlora (1844-1919), a prominent leader of the Albanian national movement and first Prime Minister of independent Albania; double-headed eagle of the independence flag; a stylised image of the pen with which the Independence Act was signed.

Reverse: View of the building where the Provisional Government of Vlora worked, today the National Museum of Independence; a stylised image of the room where the decision to declare Albania’s independence was made and of the telegraph with the news.

200 lekë Note, issue of 1992

200 Lekë Note was first printed in 1992 in China. The notes are signed by the Governor of the Bank of Albania and the Director of Issue Department.
"De La Rue" Company reprinted the same denomination in 1994 with the same security features, but the year and the signatures are different. That note was put in circulation on 02.06.1994.
The same denomination was reprinted in 1996 by "Tumba Bruk" (Sweden) with improved security features, and was put in circulation on 11.07.1997

100 Lekë Note, issue of 1993, was printed in the Bank of Albania Printing House. There are two versions of this note, which differ from one another from the year, 1993 and 1994. They were respectively issued in 16.03.1993 and 25.04.1994.

Below the dove, the nominal value, 200 Lekë, is written. The upper section features two symetric olive branches, as a symbol of peace that Mother Teresa spread throughout the nations.

The reverse features in the centre the effigy of Ismail Qemali and his name below. Obverse: The face value “50 lek” is incscribed at the centre of the coin with characters taken from the Codex. The UNESCO emblem “Memorie Du Monde” is depicted above it. Two purple s divide the inscriptions “Kodiku i Purpurt i Beratit 043” from “Beratinus –1”, written along the marginal circle.

Reverse: “Shqipëri – Albania” is inscribed on the upper margin. The year of issue “2011” is inscribed on the lower margin, on a bacground of cocentric circles. Verses from the Codex appear at the center of the coin, raised into a relief on a purple background. The letters of the Codex are written in silver; two of them are written in gold

On the theme: “Codex Purpureus Beratinus 043 Φ”

Codex Purpureus Beratinus is one of the most valuable items Albania has inherited from the Middle Ages. According to the Chronicle of Skuripeq, the Codex had been in Berat since 1356. The locals had saved the codex from the hands of a number of aggressors by hiding it in the tower of the castle, along with 25 other books.

For almost five centuries, nothing had been heard of the this Codex until 1868, when the bishop of Berat Metropolis, Anthimis Alexoudes, mentioned three purple codices that were found in the castle of Berat. Thereafter, the codex recaptured the attention of the scholars and the general public. According to the tradition, the codex was concealed in times of peril (war or occupation) and the hiding place was not given in until the restoration of peace. Hence, the codex remained in Berat and survived intensive efforts by various armies to seize it, throughout the centuries. We do not know when the codex was last hidden, but in July 1968 it was discovered in an undercroft in the sanctuary of the Dormition of the Theotokos (present-day Onufri museum) in the castle of Berat. The codex was in poor conditions due to moisture. In 1971, it was restored by the Institute of Archaeology at the Chinese Academy of Science and, upon return to Albania, was sent to at the Albanian National Archive, which houses it to date.

Codex Purpureus Beratinus is part of the Codices of Albania Fund (F 488) of the Albanian National Archives, File 1. It is also referred to as Beratinus Purpureus Φ 043. The codex comprises 190 pages, 230 x 215 mm and contains the text of the Gospels according to Saint Matthew and Saint Mark. The text is written on purple parchment (significantly deteriorated). Each page has the text written in two columns with 17 verses each. The letters are written in silver instead of common ink but the nomina sacra are written in gold. The first verse of the Gospel according to Saint Mark is also written in gold. The manuscript is written in majuscules. The only decor of the Codex is found on page 112, at the end of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew. The decor depicts a drawing in the shape of a portico, heading towards the right side. The portico’s stripes are filled with zigzag and ornate motifs. The codicological traits suggest that the Codex dates in the VI century, enlisting it among the five purple codices from this century. The place of its production, according to Codex data, is believed to be Constantinople or some other centre for producing Byzantine imperial books.

Beratinus-1 is the oldest historical document conserved in Albania. As a precious item and living testimony of Christianity in Albania, this Codex has singular values that connect the country’s present to the past and contribute substantially to the cultural continuity of Albanians throughout the centuries.
Considered as an object of unique values in historic and cultural terms for Albania and the world, Codex Purpureus Beratinus 1 was inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2005.

Obverse: The presented figurative element represents the typical Albanian traditional costume with fustanella for men, which is taken from a historical engraving of the 19th century, e period in which this costume was used in all Albanian regions, from the north to the south. Only after the 30s of the 20th century, this costume was used and is still used in the south of Albania, while in the north it was replaced by the woollen costume.

The element held by the figure is also historically known: it is called the long Albanian rifle and it is similarly named in many historical documents of the 18th century, by authors such as Poucquvile, T. Ipen, etc., as "Les longes Albanaise fusile".

The theme treated in this coin presents the Albanian art as a special social activity which began with the establishment of the slave-owning system in the 7th century B.C. - 6th century A.D. The main centres of antiquity were the Illyrian cities, such as Bylis, Amatia, Foinik, Butrot, etc, and the Helen settlements: Dyrrah, Apollonia, and Orik. In the Helen settlements, art is presented related to the archaic Corinthian and Korkyra tradition, brought from the parent cities in the 7th-6th century B.C. The local sculpture began in Apollonia and Dyrrah in the 6th century B.C. In Durrës were found incomplete sculptures made of stone. Later on (1st-2nd century A.D.) features of the roman art were integrated, especially in sculpture.

The mosaic "The Beauty of Durres"

This mosaic was first discovered during the works of the Austrian army for the construction of a fortification in 1916. The Austrian officer, Camillo Prashnicher, who was also a distinguished archaeologist, took care of the mosaic layer so it could be well-preserved. He was the first to publish the picture of the mosaic in one of his archaeological books for Albania and called it a figurative masterpiece of the Hellenistic art.

Later on the mosaic was covered and lost. Fortunately in 1947 the archaeologist from Durrës Vangjel Toçi rediscovered it.

The mosaic was 3.80m deep in the foundations of a house in the centre of the city. It is surrounded by a wall line and has an elliptical shape with an area of nearly 9 m2. In the centre of the mosaic there is the figure of a young and beautiful woman among flower stalks, buds and petals. It was called "The Beauty of Durrës", a conventional and metaphorical name. It dates back to the 4th century B.C. This mosaic decorated a private and luxurious restroom during this period in Durrës. The Mosaic technique is with natural pebbles in different colours stuck with each other with a great mastery according to opus - vermiculatum technique. It presents a developed art and has stylistic connections to Pela's mosaics of the same period in Macedonia. In 1982 the mosaic was moved from Durrës and was placed in the main hall of Antiquity in the National Historical Museum. The identification of the mosaic figure was first made by the archaeologist Dr. Moikom Zeqo who pointed out that the woman presented in the mosaic is the same with the one of the archetypes of the painted amphora in Apulia and South Italy, with red figures of the Hellenistic era.

According to Dr. Zeqo, this woman represents the Goddess Eylithea who assists in the babies' healthy delivery. It is the most outstanding and ancient mosaic in Albania.

Proclamation of Independence

The struggle of the Albanian people for freedom and for the establishment of the Albanian state reached the climax during the period known as the National Renaissance, which started in the years 30-40 of the 19th century. This great democratic movement was crowned with the Proclamation of Independence.

The National Renaissance was set up and developed as both an armed war and an expanded cultural movement. The new liberation ideas were disseminated throughout the Balkan people; they found their first expression in N. Veqiharxhi, as well as in the Albanians (Arbëreshë) of Italy with the work of J. De Rada etc. They revealed the activity of the distinguished patriots and representatives of the Albanian culture, such as K. Kristoforidhi, P. Vasa, Th. Mitko, Z. Jubani, H. Tasini, J. Vreto etc., who were revolutionary followers of the Enlightment movement. The three brothers, the political leader Abdyl Frashëri, the ideologist and the patriot Sami Frashëri and the national poet Naim Frashëri, occupy a special place. The activity of the Renaissance people was based on the conviction that the Albanians are one of the most ancient people in the Balkan, with their own traditions, culture and language, with the right of making progresses in order to get the autonomy, and later on the full independence.

The Albanian National Movement reached a new phase with the Albanian League of Prizren, founded in June, 10, 1878 which was the first political and military organization throughout Albania. The League enabled the recognition of the nation by setting up an Albanian administration, the official Albanian language and its own chief town. It also represented the Albanian nation in the international arena.

The Congress of Berlin (1878) decided the fragmentation of the Albanian territories. The Albanian League of Prizren organized the defence of Plava and Gucia, Hoti and Gruda, which were given to Montenegro by the Great Powers. The Albanian movement developed its activity further. A great number of patriotic associations were established (in Romania, Bulgaria, Egypt), the Albanian press developed, the Albanian School was opened in Korça in March, 7, 1887, important literary and political works were published, other writers started their creativity (A.Z. Çajupi, Asdren etc.).

The League of Peja (1899) responded to the new impetus of the uprisings and the requests for administrative autonomy, the unification into just one vilayet and the protection of the Albanian territories. The League performed its activity in the Kosovo vilayet and later on in that of Shkodra, Manastir and Janina. The High Porte broke it up forcefully (1900).

In 1905 the "Committee for the Liberation of Albania" was founded in Manastir, having branches in many towns in Albania. In 1908 the Congress of Manastir was convened to determine the Albanian alphabet, in September 1909 the Congress of Elbasan was convened and in December, 1, 1909 the first pedagogical school was opened in Elbasan.

The Turkish cast away their promises, implemented the Ottoman policy and pressed every manifestation of the movement for autonomy. The Albanians reacted with arms, armed uprisings burst out in 1909 in Kosovo, in 1911 in Shkodra Highland which was followed by the Memorandum of Greca for autonomy. They led to the general uprising in 1912. In July the uprising extended throughout the country.

The Albanian patriots, headed by Ismail Qemali acted outright to save the country from the fragmentation. After the defeat of the Turkish armies, Ismail Qemali, together with other patriots launched the idea of proclaiming the Albanian independence. On 28 November 1912 the National Assembly was assembled in Vlora to make the historic decision of the Proclamation of Independence. The national flag was raised and the first national government headed by Ismail Qemali was established.

The Statue of David

It is made of marble; its weight is 9 tons, and its highest point is 4.34 m (or 14.24 feet). This sculpture was made by Michelangelo, a great sculptor, architect and poet of the Italian Renaissance. Michelangelo produced this sculpture during 1501 - 1504, when the Republic of Florence was proclaimed in Italy.

Michelangelo chose to represent David as an athlete, manly character, very concentrated and ready to fight. The extreme tension is evident in his worried look and in his right hand, holding a sling (a stone that is thrown powerfully at a distance).

The character of David and what he symbolizes was perfectly in tune with Michelangelo's patriotic feelings. At the time, when Florence was going through a difficult period, Michelangelo used David, the II Israel king, and at the same time a mythical Biblical figure, as a model of heroic courage, in the hope that the Florentines would understand his message. This young Biblical hero demonstrated that inner spiritual strength can prove to be more effective than arms. The sling that David holds in his hand is the only composition element which enables us to identify his mythical figure. The meaning of David becomes fully clear if we take into consideration the historical circumstances of its creation.

Michelangelo was devoted to the Republic, and wanted each citizen to become aware of his responsibilities and commit himself to accomplishing his duties.

Michelangelo wrote in his diary: "When I returned to Florence, I found myself famous. The City Council asked me to carve a colossal David from a nineteen-foot block of marble - and damaged to boot! I locked myself away in a workshop behind the cathedral; hammered and chiselled at the towering block for three long years. In spite of the opposition of a committee of fellow artists, I insisted that the figure should stand before the "Palazzo Vecchio" as a symbol of our Republic. I had my way. Archways were torn down, narrow streets widened…it took forty men five days to move it. Once in place, all Florence was astounded. A civic hero, he was a warning…whoever governed Florence should govern justly and defend it bravely. Eyes watchful…the neck of a bull…hands of a killer…the body, e reservoir of energy. He stands poised to strike".

With this statue Michelangelo proved to his contemporaries that he not only surpassed all modern artists, but also the Greeks and Romans, by infusing formal beauty with powerful expressiveness and meaning.

Since December 1990, when the democratic movement started in Albania, students were the first to formulate one of their slogans "We want Albania just like the whole Europe". With the elections of March, 22, 1992, not only the Democratic Party that came to power, but even the socialist opposition of that time, made a change to the above slogan: "Let us make Albania just like the whole Europe!".

It is essential that this target has remained unchanged ever since, thus, expressing a popular aspiration in Albania. Given that Albanians have historically seen themselves in defence of the European civilisation and inclined towards western culture, aware of the democratic values as a present day wealth of the European people, Albanians remain determined to surpass the East-West crossroad towards the economic, political and military step-by-step integration into the representative Euro-Atlantic structures.

The first banknotes issued by the State Bank of Albania

In 1945 all banknotes stamped by the State Bank of Albania and all cheques (stamped and new issues) were withdrawn from circulation.
In July 1946 the monetary reform was carried out. This reform lasted 10 days and upon the Decree No. 94, pursuant to the Decree No. 265, dated 11.07.1946, "On the exchange of banknotes and cheques issued by the National Bank of Albania and surcharged by the State Bank of Albania and cheques issued by the State Bank of Albania", the new ratio of banknotes exchange was set as follows:

Banknotes denominated "Lek-Valute", issue of 1992, were called 'banknotes of emergency', as they were printed due to the pressing demand of economy for cash. They had the corresponding countervalue: denomination 10 "Lek Valute" = 500 Lekë and 50 "Lek Valute" = 2500 Lekë.

These banknotes were in circulation for only one year and they were replaced with the new issue of 1992, while 1 Lek Valute denomination note was printed but not put in circulation.
