Bank of Thailand is issuing a new family (series 16) of banknotes designed to glorify Thai kings of different periods. This 50 baht note is the first one.

Issue date: January 18th, 2012

Front: The portrait of King Rama IX in the Royal House of Chakri gown

Back: The images of the statue of King Naresuan Pouring water on the ground, symbolizing the declaration of independence, King Naresuan with his sword leading his troops to beat the Burmese camp, the statue of King Naresuan at the Don Chedi Memorial compund, Phra Chedi Chai Mongkol located at Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, Phara Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province.

The denominational range of the new series, which retains the sizes and the colors of
the current series (Series 15), consists of 20 baht, 50 baht, 100 baht, 500 baht, and 1000 baht.
Each denomination of the new banknotes will be issued separately, with intervals between
releases, so it will take several years until all denominations are introduced.

Other Details: Pope Paul VI visited Australia in 1970, and this medal was issued to commemorate that occasion. He was the first Pope to visit Australia, arriving in Sydney on November 30. His duties included blessing the foundation stone of St Lucy's school in Sydney, speaking to Aboriginal communities and delivering sermons. Paul VI was the son of a prominent newspaper editor. He was ordained in Bescia on 29 May 1920, studied in Rome and entered the Vatican secretariat of state in 1922. He became of one two presecretaries to Pope Pius XII, and from 1954 to 1963 was Archbishop of Milan. He worked to improve relations between workers and employers and social relations more generally. In 1958 he became a Cardinal. Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga:

Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga was a noticeable priest, political writer and naturalist. Larrañaga began his education at the Convento de San Bernardino and later continued at the School of San Carlos of Buenos Aires from 1789 to 1792. He was finally ordained as a priest and returned to Montevideo in 1799. Due to his ideas he was pursued and expelled from Montevideo in 1811. He fled to Buenos Aires, where he continued his works in natural sciences.

In 1815 Larrañaga returned to Montevideo, where he took advantage of the opportunity to introduce trees like the White Acacia and the Mimosa. A year later, he founded the Public Library in Uruguay. The library was opened from donations for his own books.
In 1830, he was elected as a Senator for the Republic of Uruguay and served until 1835. During his term, he helped pass laws restricting the death penalty and the emancipation of slaves. Upon completing his term, he dedicated his time to write. Gradually he began to lose his vision until becoming almost completely blind. In 1837, he was named co-founder of the Museum of Natural History of Uruguay. He was also appointed Vice President of the University of the Republic, but was unable to complete this post due to his death a year before the opening of the university. Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga passed away in his home in Montevideo on February 16, 1848 from a stroke.

Roque González de Santa Cruz

Father Roque González de Santa Cruz was a Paraguayan priest known for his work with the indigenous peoples of now South America. At the age of 22 Santa Cruz was ordained priest by the bishop of Córdoba. In 1609, he became a member of the Society of Jesus, beginning his work as a missionary. He became the first outsider to enter into the region known today as the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. In 1613 he founded the reduction of San Ignacio Miní and later on founded the reduction of Concepción de la Sierra Candelaria, Candelaria, San Javier, Itapúa and Yapeyú. After establishing the first mission reduction of Saint Nicolas and other missionary centers in the region, Santa Cruz was killed by Chief Nheçu in 1628. Santa Cruz was beatified on January 28, 1934 and on May 16, 1988 Santa Cruz was canonised by Pope John Paul II in Asunción, becoming the first Paraguayan saint.

At the age of twelve Hidalgo was sent to Valladolid, Michoacan to study at the Colegio de San Francisco Javier with the Jesuits, along with his brothers. When the Jesuits were expelled from Mexico in 1767, he entered the Colegio de San Nicolas. There he chose to study for the priesthood. Like many priests in Mexico, Hidalgo learned some of the indigenous Native Mexican Indian languages. Among these languages were Nahuatl, Otomi and Tarascan. He also studied Italian and French. Hidalgo was ordained as a priest in 1778 at the age of 25. From 1779 to 1792, he dedicated himself to teaching at San Nicolas as a professor of Latin grammar and arts. Although Hidalgo was educated as a priest, he did not exemplify the lifestyle of an 18th-century Mexican priest. Instead, his studies of Enlightenment-era ideas caused him to challenge traditional political and religious views. He questioned the absolute authority of the Spanish king and challenged numerous ideas presented by the Church. These challenges included the absolute power of the Pope, the virgin birth, and clerical celibacy. He enjoyed dancing and gambling. In addition, he openly lived with a woman named Maria Manuela Herrera. He fathered two daughters out of wedlock with her. Later, Hidalgo fathered three other children with a woman named Josefa Q.

In 1810 Hidalgo led a group of peasants in a revolt against the dominant Peninsulars under the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The group disbanded. After clashes with the Creole people and other townspeople. Hidalgo was captured on March 21, 1811. He was then found guilty of treason by a military court and executed by firing squad the morning of July 30. At his execution, Hidalgo placed his right hand over his heart to show the firing squad where they should aim.

Hidalgo's rebellion was the beginning of what would become the Mexican War of Independence. Although he was unsuccessful in his original mission, Hidalgo's efforts were followed by those of José María Morelos and Agustín de Iturbide who brought down the colonial government of Spain in Mexico. Hidalgo is considered the Father of the Nation of Mexico.

Isidoro de Sevilla aka San Isidoro was born c.560 in Cartagena, Spain who went on to become a Spaniard Priest who served as archbishop for more then three decades and is sometimes referred to as "the last scholar of the ancient world." Isidoro assisted in converting the Visigoths (who at the time were in control of Spain) to Christianity as well as keeping peace amongst the Christians in Visigothic Spain. The knowledge that Isidoro had at the time was far beyond that of most people living, for this he is remembered. Isidoro de Sevilla was canonized by Pope Clement VIII in 1598 and was declard a "Doctor of the Church" by Pope Innocent XIII in 1722.
