Setting up domain name and webhost

If you are new to domain names and dont how mapping takes place between the domain and the webhost where you are hosting your website here is some information about that and also resources where you can try your hands on setting up a domain for free!.

Basics :

DNS (Domain Name Server) allow the users to use readable domain names instead of ip address to visit any website. eg : www.cool-blogger.com instead of typing 66.249.91.121 .
It will contain all the information on where a particular domain points.

CNAME or canonical name allow the users to have many aliases for a given address.
Eg : blog.example.com as an alias of www.blogservice.com which may belong to someone else.
Blogger.com allows their users to use this feature for pointing their domain to the blog they have hosted.

Have a try :

If you have never tried using a custom domain names and dont feel comfortable in spending money on your first domain name without having any knowledge of the domain settings panel and the respective settings you can Register a free co.cc domain which will also provide u settings panel where you can add DNS server address and cname,mx,A records etc.

Once u register a domain there, register for a free webhosting service like 100webspace . In the control panel u may have the option for adding domain names to your account. Add the registered co.cc domain name there. You may find the DNS server addresses there, copy the dns addresses and add them into the co.cc settings panel under DNS option. Go to your webhost, using the filemanager enter the folder with name of the domain. create a test index.html file with some content. It may take upto 48 hours for all the changes to take place so u wont find your domain ready as soon as these settings are complete. After some period of time you will see your test page up, which means the domain is working properly. Once you are familiar with all settings you will find it easy managing your bought domains.

When buying new domains, i prefer godaddy because the domains are cheap, they provides you an email with your domain and excellent services.

Pagerank, Age and Alexa

Google Pagerank, Age of the domain and the alexa rank are 3 significant things that u need to take care of while running ur blog. The mixture of all three can make ur blog/site a super success.

Google Pagerank :
Getting a pagerank can be sometimes a long work of patience as google accumulates the details after periodic 6 months of time. So it is better u start off as early as possible after crearting ur blog and work on building links. Link exchanging is the best way to get huge amount of backlinks. You may to pour some bucks out of your pocket to get your blog listed in different directories.

I had been away from the internet for a week due to some problem. And now that i was well my hands creeped first directly to the mailbox. Ah thats a lot to be read ! So did i really win that prize money? Thats all a scam !. First thing is that, why will someone care to to distribute such a large amount for free? It sounds so absurd when you dont pay a single penny for a lotery ticket and your email wins you such a large prize, what will the organisation get by distributing such huge prizes to unknown people? Rather such orgaisations would prefer donating it to charity organizations. Second thing you would ask is if it is a scam then why will they waste their time in sending such emails. These emails are sent to millions of people, most of the people will be aware of the scam and you will find the mail soon in their trash but but what about the rest who do not belong to the "most"?. The real game starts when these innocent people come into their traps by replying to them by mails or calls.
The process proceeds this way :
1.They promise you to pay you your winning amount.
2.They request you to pay the shipping charges (a real huge amount) for it to be delivered to your place.
3.The winner is ready to pay those charges, the big shipping or handling charges seems to be small amount infront of the huge prize.
4.The scammers recieve that amount.
5.The winner waits waits waits.

Thats so sad :( isnt it ?

How are new websites indexed by search engines ?

When i was new in the world of internet, i tried my hands on free website/wapsite/webspace providers. Ofcourse i used to do it for pleasure and getting even a single visitor was a big thing for me. I used to read articles by fellow wap/webmasters where they unleashed the secrets of getting huge amount of visitors. To the top of the list was "Adding site to google/search engines" and it holds true even now. Later i heared about the "blog" trend which was going on web. I got a free webspace and hosted a wordpress blog there. I tried couple of times adding my blog to google and other search engines but couldnt find even a clue about my site in those search engines. I gave up and started adding my blog to directories and some of them accepted my site. I even added my blog to some of the social bookmarking sites and blog communities. About a week later what do i see? my blog is indexed by google and other search engines. I was surprised, when i manually tried adding my blog to search engines it was not included even after a month but when i added it to directories, social bookmarking sites and blog communities, asap they include it !.
Surely there was some mechanism after this.

2 months before i tried to experiment a little bit on this. I created two blogs at blogspot.com, both were on different niche and i wrote 5 articles each for both. One was kept dormant but the other was added to social bookmarking site and blog communities. After that i added both the blogs to google. After a week the 2nd blog was included in search engines but the 1st one showed no sign.
What does this mean?
The search engines cosider how well exposed you site is on the web.
If your site link is present on some other websites, search engine may index your website when it comes accross your link on those sites.

So if you site/blog is new follow these steps to get your blog quickly indexed in search engines :
1)Make your site ready to be published.
2)Add it to social bookmarking sites, blog communities and directories.
3)Now add you site to major search engines or use ping tools.

Account termination for invalid click activity ?

Is your account terminated for invalid click activity in an ad network?
There will be large number of people who may have gone through this and the few ones who are innocent will be the most frustrated !. Suddenly you get a mail one morning from advertising network saying your account has been terminated. You wish to contact them but there is no way you can contact them. Even if you find one there is no reply ! If you belong to the category other than those belonging to innocents group, seriously there is nothing to discuss for you. I have seen many people seeking for advice for how they can get an unban pass from the ad network and if its not possible which are the alternatives.
Ive no plans of talking about the alternatives, so what do i want to discuss in this post? If you would ask me for alternatives i would say "google dude!", you will find a big list there thats because clever people have already written on that ;).
The base question of my discussion is "Is the method employed for account termination correct?". Basically account termination occurs when many or continuous click arrive from same ip address or a same cookie user. In many cases it would be true that in the urge of increasing their account balance the account holders themselves must have made those clicks, but what if someone else have done it. Then you may fall in the innocent category. Dont you think if your rival knows about this scheme he will surely try to destroy this income source?. what then, will your appeal for unban be accepted? No for sure, unless you have a reputed site.
I think the basis on which the accounts are terminated should be changed. If multiple clicks from same ips are encountered, the clicks shouldnt be counted so the advertisers dont have to pay for those. Im writing on this issue because i dont want to see my account getting terminated this way, when there are so many predators moving around me :P .
Surely there is no loss in this scheme right?

Though there are many ways to get traffic, the traffic comes most from search engine.
Search engine should be exploited to the greatest extent possible. The techniques like LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) has changed the way search engines used to present the users with appropriate search results. LSI means search engines have become more intelligent and now think like human beings. So even you need to stop thinking like saerch engines and think like humans. Its not a joke :P, im serious!

Before the search engines were just keyword oriented but now in addition to that they are also meaning oriented! You must have observed many time you do not get appropriate results when you search for something. Now the LSI takes care of that in sense its algorithm is designed in such a way that it goes closest possible to the human mind. It figures out what a human would actually wants to search when he typed those keywords i.e. all the related content to that keyword should also be taken care of.

So while writing posts and selecting titles for them you should take neccessary care like :
1)Thinking in visitors point of view what you would type in search box to reach this page and accordingly select that keyword as a title for the post.
2)Dont stick to only to your niche but also write on topics related to your niche

Try it and you would see your site climb up the results.

I was searching for a tool that could really find the value of any blog/site. In the begining i found two-three tools but i wasnt impressed because more the tools, more are the reports and you can calculate a better average of your blog worth. But after searching for 3 weeks or so i prepared a list of wonderful tools that could find how much is a site valued just by entering Url of your site. When talking about blog, the art of binding the visitors plays a crucial role. Lets talk in terms of statistics. Consider, a blog gets 100 unique visitors per day from search engines. He may be getting these many visitors, but they will just be entering, reading what they wanted. If they like your blog they will bookmark it or subscribe to its RSS. If they do not find anything interesting they will leave your site. Suppose this continues for 5 days. The total visitors will be 100x5 = 500. But what if you could increase this? . If the visitors that left could be called back the amount of visits to your blog can be increased to large amount. Let me explain. If we consider the above stats and assume the visitors that left come back every day (considering you update your blog every day) the new stats would be 100+(100+100)+(100+100+100)+(100+100+100+100)+(100+100+100+100+100) = 1500 which is 3 times original traffic! . Although this calculation cannot be fully perfect, we can see that it can make a huge difference if you tempt your visitors to visit your blog again.

The number of visitors that interact with your blog daily is much less compared to those who leave your site just after one visit. To stop these visitor leakages you should take good care about following things.
-Update your blog/posts after minimum possible intervals.
-Descent appearance of blog.
-Promote your RSS feed using large attractive logos.
-Keep an email feed subscription form on your blog.
-Contests are good way of binding your visitors but it should be such that users hesitate to enter it at first look. Activities like forcing users to subscribe to your blog or forcing them to write about your blog on their blog to enter the contest will reduce amount of participants. Keep it simple.
-Give away freebies to users.
-Regular replies to comments on your blog.
-Avoid duplicate content. Users wont prefer reading anything again what they have read on any other site.

The sources from where they come are very important and regularly tracking them can give you basic idea of what kind of people visit you site/blog, helping you to further improvise on SEO. The sources of traffic can be divided into 3 groups :
1)Direct sources
2)Search engine sources
3)Referring sources
Direct sources are the visits by people who visit your site directly by entering URL ino their browser. It can include you, your friends and visitors who enter through bookmarks.
Search engine sources are the search engines which drive traffic to your site. Knowing the keywords for which you earn traffic is very important.
Referring sources are sites which contain link of your site in them. These are mainly social bookmarking sites, blog communities, social networking sites, etc.

Buying visitors worth?

You must have come across ads that promise you to give you visitors for cash. I have never tried that because i believe its not worth buying. These ads are the other ends of the ppc or gptr sites. This means the visitors are members of these sites who are payed to click on links. You just buy the packages of how many visitors you need and asap you get those. But such visitors are of no use in an interactive site, or even a normal site/blog. The reason im saying this is that the visitors they send you are money oriented, who have joined those ppc or gptr sites to earn money for themselves and have no interest in your site. They will just come visit the home page, the next moment surfing another homepage ;). If you are buying visitors for a forum or a social networking site, its of no use !

If you are concerned about your rank only than it may benifit you in terms of pagerank,alexa rank or so on. But if your site is running on ad revenue, such visitors wont even bother to look at you ads ! So if you are interested in just visitors i would recommend entrecard is the best way for driving traffic (that too for free!) instead of wasting money on buying visitors. Genuine traffic (coming from sources like search engines,blog communities, etc) are better, as they will be one who will bother to read your post and comment on your blog (also to click on ads :P).

A good blog design is one of the important aspects that bind your visitors to your blog. Users prefer to surf a good design blog for a longer time than one with dull appearence or too reflective design. It can automatically create interest in your visitors to read your blog post. Visitors are the one which make your blog run so its neccessary that you keep them happy when they are at your place :).
You can design your own template too, and ofcourse you will be admired for that. I tried to design my own but it went in vain lol :P. Still im working on it so that one day i may come up with one.

Ive come accross many beautiful templates while surfing, wish i could have all of them installed. There are lots of beautiful templates for wordpress blogs available at their official site Wordpress themes
For blogger, there are typical themes available at their official site, so most of the bloggers prefer using external templates. You get thousands of results when you search for blogger templates. Im using theme designed by Jacky Supit a cool theme designer !

I have heared that some themes give problem relating SEO, that they conflict search engines due to stuff like css. I dont know much about this, but will write about this if i find anything.

Firstly i would like to start with what blog and a normal website mean. A blog (weblog) actually a e-dairy, like your daily dairy, through which you can express your feelings and write your experiences. Blogs can be of 2 types : public or private. A public blog can be viewed by all the users on web but a private blog can be viewed just by its authors(just like a personal diary) . Today most of the blogs are used are public and used for information/knowledge sharing purpose. Blogs are used when the content is not static and needs to be added or modified on regular basis. The blog scripts are readily available for free and needs only to be installed on a webspace. You can download one from Wordpress. Or an alternative is getting a free preinstalled blog from Wordpress or Blogger

Talking about normal websites, it is used wherever the content is static, in other words the content is not changed regularly. I prefer blogs for the following reasons :
->various predesigned blog themes (templates) are easily available. U can choose required design for ur blog just at the click of a button(template chooser) . If ur using a website u need to edit ur files to change their appearance or use website editing software on your pc.
->There is no need for uploading an stuff (exept images). Inbuilt editor allows you to add content directly and saving it. Websites need their files to be edited and uploaded many times.
->Easy interaction with users using "comments" . Normally websites use communication through email (non server side execution scripts).

The first best thing a blog owner will wish is, to get his blog sponsored. If you have started a blog yesterday and come searching for sponsors, its very rare that some one will sponsor your blog because sponsors too want themselves to be promoted on reputed blogs. So this is a job of lil bit patience, experience and your networking capablity.

First thing you need to make sure is that your blog is fully "Ready". By the term "Ready" i mean is :
->Your blog should have enough posts.
->You should write quality posts.
->Older your blog better it is, Old is gold :).
->Good page rank, which depends mostly on your blog age, in other words i mean a blog will have better page rank if promoted for longer time. Also visitors build up as the blog is more older and is indexed efficiently by major search engines.

Where will you find the sponsors?
As i had mentioned before, your social network should be large enough (more friends on web). Be in touch with as many bloggers you find on blog communities like mybloglog.com and blogcatalog.com. Some will willingly tell you about the sponsors you need. Also you may come across sponsors directly, all you need to do is know what are their needs and are they related to your niche (topics you work or write on). Do not expect high paying sponsors in the begining, but as time prevails you can get good sponsors with your experience in this stream.

While surfing the web i came across a site that provided an interface between bloggers and sponsorers - Socialspark. Its a community where you can find not only sponsors for your blog but also find offers of writing a sponsored post on your blog.

Planning to advertise/publicise your site? Wish you could do it without letting a penny drop out of your pocket? There are some sites that have recently come up which allow you to do so, only difference that you use the credits instead of money to advertise your site. Credits can be earned by various ways depending on these sites. You earn credits based on number of times their widgets are loaded on your site or number of clicks, etc. Here are some sites and their descriptions :

First you need to create an account and submit your site for review. They have some guidelines while reviewing the blogs like some minimum no. of posts, good quality post, a quality blog, etc. so its better to read their terms and conditions before submitting your blog else you may not get a chance again after submitting 2 times. After submitting your blog you will be given a piece of code to be pasted on your site. Once you have your site accepted you will see their widget running where you had prviously pasted that code. The credits increase each time that widget is loaded or some visitors click on ads in it. Domain with www and without www pointing to same address

Im creating this new section "Help" where in i will try to solve your difficulties you have entered in the comments and also difficulties i have faced. So feel free to drop a comment. Lets start my own barrier that i faced while bringing up this site.
I had registerd a domain name (www.cool-blogger.com) with godaddy.com . After all settings i found that when i typed www.cool-blogger.com i reached my home page but when i did not use www (just cool-blogger.com) i found myself reaching the default page of godaddy.com. After thorough search i found a trick to tackle this problem. It was using domain forwarding . It was just like using url redirectors, which was absurd. After a deep search in google a finally got a solution. Im not sure how and what are the settings with other domain name providers but here i will demonstrate the settings for godaddy and a blogger blog :

After you have logged in your account and selected the neccessary domain name to edit its settings, you will come accross a window like one below.
Go to "Total dns and mx records".

If its you first time you will need to create a new cname record by clicking on "Add a new cname record" or edit the record if record with host www is already present there by clicking the pencil logo on extreme right. A new dialogue box will open where you need to enter "www" in "Enter an alias name" and "ghs.google.com" in "Points to host name" (incase of blogger) . Say ok and save the settings.

Now create a new cname record using same step as above and enter your domain name (eg.cool-blogger.com , the one you want to use without www) in "Enter an alias name" and "ghs.google.com" in "Points to domain name". Say ok and save your record. This is it and you are done!.

Note : It may take upto 24 hrs for these changes to take place so be patient.

Still if this does not help you may use domain forwarding. Click on the link under "Forwarding" on main page.

You will reach a new page where in you need to enter the url where it should redirect. Enter the desired url(eg.m0neytech.blogspot.com) in "Forward to" block and select "301 moved permanently" option. Again this may take upto 24 hrs.

I am currently using a blogger blog so i could point my domain directly by adding a CNAME record. But i think if you are hosting on some other server you will need to add their nameservers to your domain settings. Then using a addon domain option on your hosting server you can point it to whatever directory you want.
htaccess is the main file that needs to be edited inorder to resolve www and non-www issue.

CPM-Cost per thousand impressions.
The amount an advertiser pays for one thousand advertisement impressions, regardless of the consumer's subsequent actions.

Impressions - The number of times an advertisement is viewed by web surfers.

PPC-pay per click
Advertising model in which advertisers pay for click-throughs to their website. Ads are served based on keywords or themes.

PR-page rank
How well a particular web page or web site is listed in a search engine or advertising results.

CTR-click through rate
The percentage of clicks on a link. This is usually a percentage based on the total number of clicks divided by the number of impressions that an advertisement has received.

The cost or cost-equivalent paid per click-through to an advertiser's website.

CPL -> Cost Per Lead
Advertising expenditure required to obtain each new sales lead

PPI -> Pay Per Impression
Where an advertiser pays for each display (impression) of their advertisement (usually a banner)

PPCSE -> Pay Per Click Search Engine
A search engine where the results are composed of advertisers who pay a fee for each click on their listing. Using a bidding system, the advertiser willing to pay the most is ranked highest.

PPS -> Pay-Per-Sale
