Alright so you can already create posts within your site or your blog, after all WordPress comes with an acceptable post editor so why use this additional software?

If I stood next to you and demanded that you write a post now, how would you react?

I am guessing your response would be like mine, your creative juices would turn to ice and there would be no post until you had managed to thaw your creativity.

I already mentioned this effect in my review of text formatter plus which is designed for writing emails or newsletters. You see, I have found that the process of opening a browser and entering your login details is just as effective in killing your inspiration and creativity as having your boss or me lurking over your shoulder.

This is why I use Windows Live Writer and why I recommend you do also, you are free to create when the mood takes you and the only interruption is the time taken for the software to open.

Once inside you will find that it looks like any other post 2007 Microsoft Office Product with of course a few specialist tweaks for creating posts and articles. The first of these is that you can tailor your creativity to suit the theme of your site which is achieved by downloading your theme settings, this allows you to create content just as if you were  writing inside your site, without of course the disruption to your creativity.

However I must admit that downloading your blog settings does not always work, this seems to affect free themes more than paid ones but even with this glitch you can still create and upload to your site without any drama.

If you have been following my advice on this and my other blogs then you will have a library of images and videos ready to be used for your creations without any licensing issues.

Those images that are appropriate to the content of your creative juices can be placed strategically throughout the post and the layout verified prior to publishing on your site, this also applies to videos. However as I use flowplayer for my videos, I add videos after the draft version has been sent to my site.

How much should you write is a common creativity question and the answer is of course super simple.

You should continue to write until you have covered all of the points you want to make but of course if get carried away then you may need to pare the content back. Windows Live Writer has an editing section that includes spell checking, word count and content finder utilities which makes editing and proof reading super simple.

I have mentioned that you can upload the content to your site but how is this achieved?

This is where you have to open your blog to external content via a the Settings>Writing panel this is not as scary as it sounds as you will have to enter your WordPress login details to allow Windows Live Writer to communicate with your blog.

One tip on WordPress site security here, as you can see in the image, I have completely deleted the post via email settings, these are filled in by default which means that someone could use these default setting to  gain access to your site. Of course with XML-RPC enabled you have also opened a vulnerability for your site but for me the advantages far outweigh the minimal risk that this creates.

To mitigate this risk, with this software you can save your posts onto your computer so should the worst happen then at least you will have a copy of each post ready to be re-posted once your sites phoenix rises from the flames of hacking or corruption.

The free Windows Live Writer software will allow you to write content or even parts of content when the mood takes you without having to go through the hassle of venturing into the cloud to gain access to your sites content creation facilities. This ultimately means that the quality of your content will increase as you return to enjoying the process of content creation.

I am not sure why they called it Digsby but if you are able to get past the strange name you will discover a massively powerful messenger client that does exactly what it promises.

It manages the email, social media and Instant messenger accounts that you instruct it to monitor.

The beauty of this is that you can see in an instant which accounts have new messages which means no more digitally lying underneath your mailbox waiting for the virtual postman to deliver that vital message you were promised.

I will confess I have been guilty of this but this messenger removes the need for you to lurk.

Unlike many other applications of this type you are not limited to just one Twitter account, you can have as many as you desire and when it comes to email the same applies.

The most useful feature I find with this service apart from getting alerted to any issues that I need to address when my computer starts up is, you can go directly to the relevant account by simply clicking on the notification.

This one simple click saves you the hassle of having to log into each account every time you wish to respond to a notification, you can of course disable Digsby from storing your account passwords but that would seriously cripple the benefits this messenger client can bring to you.

The one thing to take away from my gushing about Digsby is that there is not a lot to say about it as it is a highly focussed messenger client that does not have any unrelated bells and whistles to distract you. This is the messenger client that is as focussed on moving forwards as you are.

I have been using this service for ages and highly recommend this to anyone who has more than one email address and a social media presence. By the way I almost forgot to mention, it is free to use.

Focus booster is an activity timer that will countdown and alert you when a work session is over, it also allows you to set a break duration after each session

This is produced by focus booster.com and can also be sourced from softpedia if you do not like downloading software from sites you have not heard of.

There is only good news about this software and the first is that it is completely free without any trial periods or licenses to worry about.

This software is based upon the Pomodoro technique?

This is a time management method created in the 1980′s by Francesco Cirillo. It acts as a valuable asset when you desire to accomplish any task in the most efficient manner and comes highly recommended by many marketers.

What Pomodoro actually encourages is for you to break down your work sessions into 25 minute sessions separated by 5 minute breaks. The premise being that going hell for leather on your tasks in short bursts is a far more efficient and healthy way to work.

Of course each session must be totally devoted to one single task otherwise you will not get the benefits.

Which leads to the 5 basic steps to using Focus Booster effectively.

• Decide on the task to be done
• Set Focus Booster to 25 minutes, leave the break length at 5 minutes
• Work on only that task until the timer rings
• Record the task status, how on track are you?
• Take the short break, a drink or domestic break.
• Every 2 hours (four sessions) take a longer break of 15 minutes.

Now although the original technique was based upon a mechanical timer, I have found a digital one to be far more effective. Primarily because almost all of my work is done on the computer and the fact that the stop button on the mechanical timer broke after several strikes thus I searched and found a more reliable alternative.

Focus booster options allow you have it always on show no matter how many windows you open. This however does not create an functional issue as the timer is very small as shown in the image.

The optional optional ticking sound is a healthy irritant because it is a timely reminder that you are working to a deadline which of course you should be.

Now setting session times is all good and well but there is a more important benefit from using the Focus Booster timer.

After you have used this for a while and have got into the rhythm of noting how long it actually takes a highly focussed you to do each task, you can then plan your weeks activity based upon real durations which of course leads to a more efficient, productive and less stressful working environment.

As the quote says, if you do not know where you are going then any destination will do.

Of course if you have a dream lifestyle that you wish to make a reality then any destination is most definitely not what you want to achieve.

However to travel in a focussed and personalised direction, you must have a clear path in mind and this is where business planning comes in, sounds really boring and perhaps you have tried before and got nowhere.

If you use your computer for anything other than gaming then you will at sometime taken notes on a scrap of paper and promptly lost them. There is a default solution to this in Notepad provided as part of the Microsoft Windows software however it is dated and seriously lacking in features, this is where Notepad++ came into my life

So why is it so much better than the default Windows option?
If you take a look at the image you will see that the main feature of this text editor is that you can have multiple text files available at the same time and switch seamlessly between them. You can also re-organise these to suit your needs

But if that is all it cannot do then why should you be impressed, well thankfully this is no  one trick pony.

I use this program to store my frequently used files or ones that I need in a hurry.

For instance the 3rd tab is called standard code and contains sample html code. In here I have code blocks that cover everything from YouTube embedding through web page code to iTunes xml feeds.

This ensures that when I need to add html I can quickly pick the right block for the job without having to re-invent the wheel every time.

As an article writer the 4th tab contains my templates for writing articles and reviews, this review was written using one of those templates. Once this review was written I check the word count using the Textfx word count and the spelling using the spell checker plugin, which is available in several languages. This ensures that I have written more than enough to meet the requirements of the article sites but have not gone too far.

If you are a marketer looking to create text ads then this is the tool for you. Starting with a vague long idea of the killer phrase, you can quickly tweak and trim the phrase until it matches the limits set by the advertising site, typically between 26 and 70 characters. Of course once you have placed your ad you may never look at this again until you decide to see if you can improve it.

With a non multi-tab text editor you will have to remember where you saved the ad, the multi-tab feature removes this problem as  it will always be there until you decide to close it, which removes it from the displayed files shown every time you open Notepad++

I run a small company in the UK and each week I have to follow a process for paying my staff and sorting out the files for my bookkeeper, as these are weekly tasks it makes sense to have them easily to hand and with Notepad++ it is so.

If you are a programmer then this text editor is the one for you as it is very tolerant some of the character coding used in certain languages. I have come experienced instances where all I could see were special character in notepad, then when I viewed the same file in notepad++ the true code was shown. Even if the code does appear, as the photo shows the code is far easier on the eye when you use this software rather than the default option.

There are many more features available but as I use this primarily as a text editor and unfortunately every now and again to rebuild corrupted blogs this is the software that I call first to help me get my tasks done with the least amount of drama and in the quickest time.

I totally recommend this software, it has survived the numerous culls I have undertaken on my software library when I realise that I am storing programs that are either redundant or unnecessary.

Core ftp LE is a program that makes transferring files between computers and servers easy and quick. I have trialled many of them and for me it is the best ftp program.

It comes in various versions but for you and me, all we need to know is that it comes in paid or free versions.

I am a free user and this fulfills all of my needs.

The software was developed by coreftp.com and is still being regularly updated, in fact the latest update was on the 6^th of April 2011.

Now as I said, I have tested many of its competitors over the 3 years that I have been using this software and it always came out on top in the long run.

I love this software because it works without you having to know really what you are doing.

In the beginning I tried to use the most recommended one on the market and it drove me crazy, I have tried to return to this recently on the recommendation of some friends and it still had the same effect on me.

Both packages were given the same information and whilst Core just got down to work, Filezilla whined, fired up spurious error messages and really was just a pain to use. I don’t have to worry about settings under the bonnet in Core and there was no way I was going to waste time making Filezilla happy.

To get a ftp client to work you will need to provide a site name which can be left to your imagination, plus the technical information that you will have been given by your hosting company.

This includes the domain address for ftp transfers, your username and password.

The great thing is that you can store all of these details and those for any other websites in the site manager window, this will allow you to quickly connect to the desired one with a single click.

Okay so the world has gone all CMS crazy and building websites for most people is no longer a required skill but whilst WordPress is fine for host hosting your sites and blogs, do you really need such a complex system for managing an optin or splash page?

You are building a list?

The key to success with optin pages is to remove all other distractions from the visitor and they need to be single pages that you can quickly create from templates.

Here is the one that I use and it converts really well.

Of course now that you have created your optin page you will need to get it online and this is where the Core ftp comes in.

An optin page will never be loved by any of the search engines, as they are static and unchanging pages, thus you will need to send traffic to it.  Internet users will never find this page in the Google results, unless of course they are specifically looking for one of your pages.

With this in mind there is no reason to have your optin page on a dedicated domain, a sub-directory of a domain you are already using would be fine.

Select the desired domain in the Site Manager and click connect, after a short period of technical handshaking you will now be able to transfer files to your hosting server.

The right hand window is the remote (server) area, in this you should browse to the directory you wish to use for your optin page. If it does not exist then you do not need to worry, it will in a moment.

The left hand window is the local area (your pc), locate the project folder that contains the optin page files and simply drag this over to the remote window and the transfer will begin.

Now this is one area where Core ftp really beats Filezilla hands down, if you are transferring a massive site, or you are on a poor connection, Filezilla will lose interest and disconnect after 15 minutes. Core on the other hand just gets on with the job and never loses interest or whines about the state of your connection.

I wanted to upload some video files and it took over 20 minutes to transfer these and this was during the period where I was seriously thinking of moving to Filezilla. I quickly gave up on that idea, as only Core managed to complete the transfer.

There are a host of other features but to be honest I never use them, so I am not going to discuss them.

The bottom line is that for most people all they want to do is move files between their computer and their hosting server, this Core FTP LE does really well and with the minimum of fuss and complication.

If you are serious about creating a presence online then you should be doing more than just social media or blogging, you really need to start building a list and alongside a great autoresponder service plus great hosting a reliable ftp client is a must.

My latest advice on this software: Do not use it, I have paid for this and actually un-installed it, the full reasons are at the end

I have considered purchasing this program for many months having even taken the free trial previously. However, at that time I could not justify the modest expense as I had a spell and grammar checker already in Microsoft Word, thus the duplication was a waste of my money.

As I have now decided to create more written content, this program’s functionality was reconsidered as a way to improve my work rate and get this content published with less time spent in the proof reading phase.

Thus with the software purchased and installed, I decided to run it through its paces. For this I wrote an article, which was checked using 2 of the most common text editors to check for writing accuracy. These programs were Microsoft Word 2007 personal edition, OpenOffice 3 Writer and of course Whitesmoke 2011 was given the final word on the quality of the article.

I use a multi-tab program called Notepadd++ to write my articles. This has the benefit of retaining my frequently used files on separate tabs, which means my writing template and latest article will both be available at the same time. However, once you have activated Whitesmoke using F2 from the text editor, then all the tabs become locked and remain so until you have finished with the Whitesmoke proof reading process.

Plus as I attempt to touch type but with 10 fingers to control whilst releasing the thoughts from my brain means that often one of these digits goes astray and this combined with my age means there are many spelling errors.

I have used Word as my first line of defence in proof reading for many years, and it does a reasonable job for locating spelling and grammar errors, although it is a little too obsessed with semi-colons for my liking. However, as one of my writing friends once said, if in doubt use a semi-colon as very few understand its use, and thus no one will question it!

Having tested the article in Word, there were five spelling mistakes and a couple of grammar advisories.

With Word having done its best, I returned to the original text and let OpenOffice Writer take the helm. Its filters managed to find 4 of the spelling errors and neither of the grammar errors. The spelling that it missed was the use of ‘every day’ instead of ‘everyday’. The other problem here was that it did not recognize ‘ISP’ and provided no sensible alternatives.

Thus out of these 2, Word was clearly the better for an initial spelling and grammar check.

Now enter Whitesmoke and its many promised dedicated proof reading filters.

You do not actually open Whitesmoke, rather you call for its help from where you are writing. This can be a text file such as the one that I created for this review, an email or in your browser, when you are adding as an example, a comment to a blog.

This is fine as long as you are not using Chrome.

I currently have IE 9, Chrome, and Firefox installed. Of these Chrome was the one that did not work with Whitesmoke, it will open when called but the text will not appear in the check area.

WhiteSmoke’s initial run through the article was good as it found all the spelling mistakes and came up with 12 grammatical advisories.

One item that may cause confusion after you click on the check button is the error message ‘Repeated Word’, what this really means is that you have poor sentence construction. If you right click on the error you are given several choices, which can be seen in the image.

These will explain the nature of the error and suggest alternative constructions to improve your text and ultimately your entire writing style, this is why it makes sense to consider these suggestions and use these as learning opportunities.

If you have like me ever tried to read a guide on grammar then you will know just how tiring this task can be, it takes learning by rote to a whole new level of pain and depression. I never did read the entire book, page 100 was the furthest into the book that I could go! Therefore, this learning as you go is for me a much better option.

If you look more carefully at the image, you are also provided with a review of your writing ranked using several categories, this is an interesting feature and one you can use to challenge yourself with.

Now a word of caution, this program will not auto correct your writing. You need to click on each error or advisory and make the alterations to satisfy these indications. Once you have run through the text click on apply, it will make the changes and return control back to the program that you were writing in, complete with the amended version of the text.

I purchased the General Writing version and thus alongside the writers’ tab, there were also four other tabs, the first of which was the translator, but as I do not speak any foreign languages, it was impossible to verify for accuracy. I converted a piece of the article into French, Chinese and German and then used both Google translate and Yahoo Babel Fish to revert the text back to English. None of the results were satisfactory. However, there is an option to have the conversion done properly by a site called onehourtranslation.com, I have not tried their services but at 0.06 euros per word it is not an expensive service.

Next to this tab, there is a dictionary which is very comprehensive and actually draws its information from several sources with the encyclopedic content coming from Wikipedia, unfortunately this tab does not contain an example of how to use the entered word.

The final tab contains a series of templates arranged into categories the first being Apologies with a template for inappropriate behavior, which may come in handy for many after the office party.

Overall this is a very useful tool to help raise the quality of your articles whilst allowing you to develop and improve your writing skills, and if you take advantage of the free trial you can see just how powerful this program really is before having to part with any money.

The above review was based upon the test as described, however the more I use this software the more problems I am discovering with it, in particular the random nature of its recommendations. If you are not a natural English speaker, this software could make your writing worse, if you trust it blindly.

For this reason I would recommend that you do not take the paid option at the moment. I have written to the company for clarification on these issues and I await their response.

I have now lost total faith in this software and as I was having a PC clear out, this was high up on the delete schedule. I never did hear back from the creators and thus even though I took the paid option this software is no longer used by me or any of my team members.

The point of PowerLink Generator is to mask, brand and track the click rate of your links. There are plenty of alternative solutions for each of these features and I have trialled many of these solutions, however none of these alternatives do all 3.

Only when I find a solution that is good enough for me will I recommend it to you.

The main reason for hyperlink masking is to ensure your affiliate code is not revealed and remains intact throughout the customers visit.

By ensuring this you can be confident that you are going to get the commission you deserve for bringing this new customer to the products sales page.

You should only be promoting sites and products that you are proud to sell, after all you want your customers to trust your judgement, thus why not stand up and declare that you are happy to recommend the product.

First off name the campaign with the product title, the advertising site name plus a site code made of up to 4 characters.

The link text name needs to be less than 20 characters, I use the product name followed by the site code. This explains the strange characters at the end of the branding example above.

The tracked URL is your affiliate or destination link address.

Drop cookie for affiliate link, if there is a sign up process but you want your customers to go direct to the sales page then this is the option for you. I have never yet found a need to use this option but it is there should the need arise.

Pop-ups, I never use these for 2 reasons. One they are irritating and this is not what you want to do to your customer, secondly due to the amount of popup blockers built into most modern browsers, you can never be certain that your pop up will work.

Hyperlink masking is the process of hiding the affiliate code on the starting page, this code will however be revealed on the destination site. I prefer to cloak my links, as this will keep your affiliate code hidden from view.

However you need to test your cloaked links as I know from experience that not every site will accepts these. Facebook, for example will not allow cloaked links to progress to their destination. Instead, you get directed to blank screen with a Facebook logo, which you have to click on to continue, strange events encourage people to abandon transactions and thus I no longer use cloaking with any Facebook links.

The masked code will be sufficient for most transactions, the cloak is just an extra layer of security to deter the commission thieves.

The affiliate program info is self explanatory and is there as a reminder of the site details so you can track and return to the site that is hosting the affiliate product.

After you have clicked add, this first site will be saved, always ensure to check that the masked or cloaked link works.

Now that you have setup your affiliate program for the first site, do a search for this campaign using the product title, then click on the clone link.

This will allow you to rapidly setup unique tracking links for each site. You want to do this so you can see exactly which sites are giving the best results.

All you need to do is use the same text name but add the new site code then for the campaign name use the same product title, the new advertising site name plus the site code. All the rest of the information of course remains the same.

This is the main reason why I have stopped using all the other tracking systems and am now happy to recommend PowerLink generator as it makes setting up and running campaigns very quick, easy and secure.

Now as I have said before TrafficWave is fine as long as you have planned your campaign meticulously before you create the email series and the link tracking. However should you have to amend the order of the messages then it can become very messy which is where I found myself and threw in the towel.
