On this day, December 7 exactly 70 years ago Pearl Harbor was attacked. My Father, Paul Smith, was a Marine stationed at Pearl Harbor and served there on that fateful day. He spent his entire career serving in the military. He is now 90 years old and still a fierce patriot. In 1991, on the 50th anniversary of the bombing, I was at Pearl Harbor with my Father for the memorial services. The 8 remaining marines from his battalion, including his commanding officer, were with us. As we took a boat across the water very early to arrive at the Arizona Memorial, I was struck by the stories the survivors told me, and I had them write in my copy of the book ”Day Of Infamy” so I could remember their stories. Upon returning to Dallas, I wrote a story about my Father and that trip and presented it to [...]

He’s a good salesman, and he wants to be an entrepreneur, but his last couple of business ideas went south. I started describing what he should do to make a good decision on a business idea, and I realized that what I was describing also applies to business owners who want to add new products or services to their existing business. I thought it would be a good idea to share my thoughts, so here goes… Acid Test Your Business Idea Test # 1 – Believe in what you are selling The first test for a business idea overall is to do or sell something that you are passionate about, and that you can have fun with.
I was deeply touched by an email from a friend today, and could not help looking at the state of small businesses in America and deciding to share what was shared with me. I think the idea is important enough to be given serious consideration. The future of American jobs and American business may well depend on it during the upcoming season of giving. As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. Let’s make this year different. This year Americans should seriously consider giving the gift of genuine concern for other Americans and the small businesses they own that provide jobs for Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there [...]

I often get asked by my business and practice owner clients for good ideas for marketing to attract new patients and customers. I am a huge proponent of promoting because, done correctly, it drives up patient and customer counts, and drives up income. Here are my thoughts and ideas. Referrals Are Pure Gold I know you have heard this before, and it is absolutely true. But equally important to asking for referrals, and running a referral program, is finding an inexpensive, easy way to show appreciation to those who refer patients or customers to you. I have found this SOCProgram works great and I use it all the time to send appreciation cards and even small high quality but inexpensive gifts, right from my computer. Check it out and try it out in step 2 for free. You can mail 2 cards at no cost to you, so mail one [...]

The IRS with little official fanfare and no real advance warning began a “national research project” to study (1) payroll taxes, (2) fringe benefits, (3) independent contractor, (4) expense reimbursements and (5) other related “payroll” issues. Use of the phrase “National Research Project” seems fairly innocuous and is easily confused with the IRS’ more benign National Research Program. The goal of the latter is to design a strategy to collect data that will be used to measure filing and reporting compliance with the guiding principle “to minimize taxpayer burden as data are [sic] collected.” Confusion of the National Research Project with the National Research Program may be the IRS’ intent, because there have been few public statements that actually describe what is in reality a massive audit initiative. As the rumored audits have begun, the IRS finally published “Headliner Volume 280″ describing in only the vaguest terms the audits being [...]

I’ve noticed that, in letters, e-mails and conversation, more and more people are using the phrase “flourish and prosper” recently and I wondered just how many have actually analyzed what that actually means in terms of business money management, and just how it can be accomplished. Socrates said, “The beginning of wisdom is a definition of terms“ so, by habit, I went to the oldest set of dictionaries that I own to get the purest definition of flourish, and here is what I found: Flourish (verb intransitive) to do well and be prosperous; to be in a state of activity and production; to reach a height of development or influence; to increase in health, wealth, happiness, honor, comfort or whatever is desirable. [Webster Third International Dictionary © 1909] So if we can flourish, then we have a much better chance of being truly prosperous. How can we carry out the actions [...]

I guess I thought everybody knew this, until I was talking to a friend of mine today who said, “I finally rolled up that big jug of change last night and took it to the bank today.” Of course I asked, “Did you find any silver dimes, quarters or nickels in it?” And she said, “What?” Okay, so I assumed, and you know what that usually means. Darn! So here’s the deal. A nickel minted between 1942 – 1945 is worth over $2.50 at the price of silver right this minute. A dime minted before 1965 is worth over $3.25. A quarter minted before 1965 is worth over $8.00. And a half-dollar minted before 1965 is worth over $16.00, and between 1965 and 1970, over $6.50. The first fundamental of successful business money management is deceptively simple. What is it? It is: Make more money than you spend. The second fundamental is: Direct the use of the money you [...]

So if a practice owner is looking at how much it has cost them to make payroll and pay the bills, and that is the income target they are going after, then they are aiming for a break even target. As costs go up they tend to start losing money. Then they just pay bills as they get them. So, in essence, [...]

I really love helping business owners with their money management and internet advertising, so I spend the majority of my days sitting at my desk working on the computer and phone. It seems that the work never ends. There are hundreds of thousands of small business owners out there who need help on their finance lines. Okay, I was game for something new, so I decided I’d go along and learn to shoot hoops [...]

Business Owner: Your business money management software doesn’t work for my business. Sandra: What do you mean exactly when you say it doesn’t work for your business? Business Owner: Well, for one thing, what good is going to all the trouble to fill out the budget? I already know how much money I’m spending. Sandra: The budget module isn’t meant to tell you how much you’re spending. It’s designed to tell you how much you should be making. Business Owner: What? Sandra: And just making break even isn’t good enough, you have to budget to do better than break even. Business Owner: Huh?
Your business money management future hangs in the balance. There are few political events in our lifetime that have the potential for greater impact on the U.S. economy and your business economy than the upcoming elections. When the election dust settles on November 2nd, two scenarios are possible: Scenario A: Our leaders in Washington are emboldened by the election results and eager to raise taxes on businesses, spend even more on economic stimulus, housing market bailouts and other government mandated programs, Or … Scenario B: They are thrown out of office or further chastened by voters who are fed up with the recent explosion in government deficits and debts. In just 37 days from today, you will have the opportunity to impact which of these scenarios will actually occur,, and what the impact will be on the financial future of your business, and all the other businesses across America that [...]

On business money management success… “You might well remember that nothing can bring you success but yourself.” - Napoleon Hill My friend Perry Marshall has a term he coined – “Operation Moneysuck” – and it describes what happens to you, as a business owner, when you are in your business working on doing what will bring in the cash flow, and others keep interrupting you to handle all sorts of situations and emergencies that suck up your time when you should be doing what you do best to bring in income. You aren’t making money when you are fixing the copier, calling the plumber to get the toilet fixed, bypassing the Office Manager by talking to the scheduler about the need to keep the appointment book 95% full, calling patients to remind them of their appointment, or worrying about how you are going to pay bills at the end of [...]
