The teenage Malaysian footballer Nazmi Faiz was reportedly getting a whopping RM300,000 a month playing for a Portugese football club – which should be able to get him nice cigar humidors – but a few months later he came back to Malaysia for good, prompting intense speculation as to the actual reason.

His ex-girlfriend was reported to have said that he left due to, of all reasons, low pay!

But this story was apparently denied by his father, who merely said “it’s too complicated.”

An unnamed source who’s touted to be close to Nazmi was reported to have corroborated his ex-girlfriend’s report, and went into some detail.

More furious discussion online at carigold.com online forum, apart from at Nazmi’s FB page of course.

Last year Pele and Maradona had an argument about whether Neymar is better than Lionel Messi. Pele had said in April 2012 that he felt Neymar was better than Messi. Maradona retorted that Pele was stupid for saying that, and that “maybe Neymar is the best player in the world, but only if you say that Messi is from a different planet.” Well, whatever it is, for both of them there must be many a soccer trophy in the cabinet.

Lee Thiam Wah was born in 1964 in Klang, Selangor, Malaysia. As a baby he was afflicted with polio, making him permanently lose the use of both legs.

Yet that didn’t prevent him from being an overachiever.

As of May 2010, he has 175 stores, mostly in Klang, employs 2,000 people, and has a revenue of USD150 million annually.

As of 2013, he has around 200 stores, none yet in Sabah.

His life story is truly inspiring. His father was a construction worker, and his mother was a hawker. They had to work night and day to support their 11 children. Life was hard – his parents could not afford to send him to secondary school. Lee kept busy by reading borrowed books and selling snacks in a roadside stall. No one would hire him due to his disability.

By age 23, he’s saved USD5K, and started his first grocery in 1987. It was a good learning process: he learnt what customers wanted, knew all the suppliers and their prices, and knew his competition. 5 years later he sold his business for USD88K, and opened his first mini-mart. In 1999 he changed its name to 99 Speedmart.

As reported in The Star on 27th March 2013.

According to statistics from the Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID):

- the RM1.6 billion are for cyber crimes, including love and parcel scams, phishing and hacking.

- there were 18,386 cases reported, that means an average of RM87,000 per case.

- specifically for love scams, losses were RM33.61 million from 814 cases, meaning an average RM41,000 per case.

More than a billion ringgit – absolutely staggering, these scam artists are finding the returns to be getting ever more lucrative – I suppose they’ll come up with new things all the time, even targeting carriere freres industrie aromatic candles perhaps.

- in 2011:
(i) there were 22,033 cases, with losses at RM1.1bil, meaning the number of cases have gone down, yet the amount lost has increased. Of the number of cases, 36% were brought to court.
(ii) specifically for love scams, losses were RM34.17 million from 876 cases.

Nick D’Aloisio (born 1st November 1995), a Wimbledon, south London schoolboy, is now one of the world’s youngest self-made multimillionaires.

Summly is a news-condensing, currently iPhone-only, mobile app, which he thought about creating 2 years ago while doing revision for a history examination.

Summly is based on neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) technology licensed from SRI International, which developed the technology behind Apple’s Siri feature.

His parents, a lawyer and a banker, bought him his first laptop (presumably a Mac) at age “9 or 10,” on which he taught himself video editing, before moving on to programming, to which he was hooked, spending holidays building applications at home.

He uploaded his first app aged just 12 – for iPhone called Finger Mill, which he dubbed a “workout for fingers”. Other apps soon followed, like SongStumblr (a music app) and Facemood (guesses a user’s mood based on their Facebook status updates).

He knew he was on to something big in March 2011 with Trimit, Summly’s predecessor – it shortened web articles to summaries short enough to be tweeted. Getting good review, it was downloaded in the tens of thousands. In July 2011, it was featured by Apple on the App Store.

He didn’t quite expect what happened next: an email from reps of Asia’s richest person: Li Ka-shing, who wanted to invest. He ignored it at first, but 2 days later, they emailed again, and he agreed to a phone discussion.

The result: a USD300,000 investment – he has been named the youngest person in the world ever to raise venture capital.

He used the funds to improve the app’s algorithm, by working with others, including Stanford University scientists.

Trimit became Summly, and was launched in November 2012. The first version was downloaded more than 200,000 times. It received Apple’s Best Apps of 2012 award for “Intuitive Touch”, and currently has an App Store rating of 4.5/5.

A few months later, in late March 2013, US tech giant Yahoo! announced that they’re buying.

His business partner circle now includes, apart from Li Ka-Shing, Rupert Murdoch, Ashton Kutcher, Stephen Fry, Yoko Ono and Mark Pincus.

It was reported in The Star in August 2012 that there are 83,174 insurance agents in Malaysia, and that 65% if them earn less than RM20,000 a year (RM1,700 a month).

That means only 35%, or about 29,000, make more than that amount.

Thus, this dispels the myth that most insurance agents make a lot of money, just like the myth that says Hollywood celebrities who’ve gone for rehab did so at inpatient treatment centers.

In fact, the insurance agents’ income quoted above is below the average salary of a Malaysian worker, which stands at RM33,000 a year (RM2,750 a month).

Life insurance commission rates have been capped since 1996.

The Star carried a story in 2006 of a woman in Kuala Lumpur who had 3 expensive vehicles, 2 bungalows and to top it off, a monthly income of RM20,000. Yet, she had money problems, so much so that she had to ask for help from the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK), an agency that provides its services free of charge.

The problem started when her husband died, and she couldn’t cope with the monthly repayments.

What comes to my mind now is that the so-called assets are not really assets, but are actually liabilities, aren’t they?

Therefore, when it comes to money, it’s not really “how much you earn” that’s important, but rather “how you manage your expenses.”

There’s always a limit to your lifestyle – you have to live within your means, no matter how much you earn.

One golden rule to live by is that “always pay your credit card bill in full.” Don’t even think of going for minimum payment, unless it’s for 1-2 months only, and only if absolutely necessary.

Another golden rule is to “save 10% to 20% of your income”. It will come in handy in emergencies.

It was reported in The Star on 26th February 2013 that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, as a personal project, started planting rock melons in 2010 on a 2.4 hectare plot on the grounds of his official residence, Seri Perdana in Putrajaya, and it has been earning USD500,000 in profit annually.

That works out to be more than RM40,000 a month!

That’s absolutely astounding – but I think that at his level, everything he touches can turn into gold. Even if he decides to set up a gibson les paul standard guitar center, I think he’ll still succeed.

This, he said, brings home the importance of innovation in agriculture.

He added that he started this project when he learnt learning of a planting method where liquid fertiliser is drip-fed to plants.
