First of all, [...]]]> I was talking to someone the other day about the web business I’m developing, called “Money with Life”. During the conversation, they said something like “That’s great, it will make you enough money to buy a really nice hat!”. The comment may have been in jest, or earnest, but it got me thinking.

First of all, they are absolutely correct. Web businesses that use advertising as their source of revenue, are a long shot. They typically don’t make much money for many months, if at all. If Money with Life does earn some money, at one point the amount should be just enough to buy a nice hat.

However, if it earns enough to buy one hat, it could earn enough to buy two. Or four. Or four hundred. Even the strongest skeptic has to admit that financial success is physically possible. There are definitely people in the world who earn money from unusual efforts.

Actually, web publishing is not all that unusual. Compare it to this… it was not long ago when there were no companies that would rent you movies, using the Postal Service. In August of 1997, two guys in California started a business of renting movies by mail. In 2008, 11 years later, Netflix had annual revenues of 1.3 billion US dollars.

Netflix may seem perfectly normal now, but in 1997, it was an unknown and unproven business concept. Two individuals had to spend a lot of their time and money, to find out if people would like it.

Some people seem to think that the only worthwhile endeavors are the ones that are both sure bets, and provide immediate payback. Have you ever heard the phrase “get a real job”? Apparently, some efforts are not even “real”, unless they are guaranteed to win, right away.

So, why do we do it? There are those of us who seem to be attracted to “long shot” endeavors… with no immediate payback, and long term time scales. What attracts us to this?

The truth is, I have no idea… I do know that I’m attracted to a challenge. I also know that certain “sure bet” solutions don’t work equally, for everybody. A man in a wheelchair may not be the best fit for construction work. A research scientist may not make the best hospital nurse.

For whatever reason, there are those of us who take it upon ourselves to shoot for something uncertain. And I think that is a good thing! Without the spirit to reach outside of what is normal, there would be no Netflix. There would be no NASA. There would be no light bulbs, electricity, bicycles, or modern health care.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of normal work. I enjoy shoveling snow from a sidewalk, or cooking a good meal. Those things are important. They need to be done.

I just get a special thrill from exploring new territory. If you have something you would really like to accomplish in your life, but it is not a “sure bet”… I say go for it! You’ll never know what might have happened, unless you try… and try again.
