How to Configure Drupal Adsense Module and Edit Colors

A good practice for uploading any module or plugin is to actually read the readme file thats almost always included in the download package.  Here’s what the readme tells us…

To enable this module, visit Administer -> Site building -> Modules, and enable adsense, and one of the other modules in the Adsense group.

To configure it, go to Administer -> Site configuration -> AdSense.

Here’s a look at the Home » Administer » Site building » Modules page that we use to enable the module.

Be sure to assign the 728×90 block to a region, slider to be exact.  See the image below to clear up any confusion.

I’m using the conch theme and need to make it look somewhat like the preview.  I was unhappy with link structure and finally figured how to change the node/1 from showing in the permalinks.  Here’s where you need to head to for the edit:

Home » Administer » Site building » URL aliases

Type node/1 for the existing system path. Then, type in your alternative. For example, I typed in “fansite” for the alternative.

Now my permalink show as…

http://seethesite.name/ludacris/fansite

Instead of…

http://seethesite.name/ludacris/node/1

The url path setting can be defined when you’re creating content as well.  But who really wants to alias the link structure manually for each and every post?  I ran into the PathAuto module the promises…

The Pathauto module automatically generates path aliases for various kinds of content (nodes, categories, users) without requiring the user to manually specify the path alias.

I’m off to checkout the PathAuto and to see how to actually load a module.  I see other related modules that are recommended by drupal.  Any ideas on what works best?

The Drupal: Creating Blogs, Forums, Portals, and Community Websites book by David Mercer is such a good read.  It provides very valuable information for setting up websites.  Let’s take a look at how to remove the warning errors.

The drupal installation instructions says to change the name of the default.settings.php file to settings.php.  But then there’s the “No such file or directory” that comes later in the installation process.  The solution is to simply re-upload the default.settings.php from your drupal download.

The next warning error dealt with headers that were already sent.  This can be solved opening the install.inc and making sure there is no spaces after the last character of the last line.

Just got the following error during installation…

register_globals is enabled. Drupal requires this configuration directive to be disabled. Your site may not be secure when register_globals is enabled. The PHP manual has instructions for how to change configuration settings. (Currently using PHP register globals Enabled (’1′))

I browsed the drupal support forum to find a clue.  Someone else said, “What I ended up doing was placing a php.ini file in the root folder….”.  That’s when I copied the php.ini file that I had in my public_html folder.  Then I uploaded the very same php.ini to the directory that house my drupal. This fixed the error and I had success moving on with the install after clicking the “try again” link.

LUDACRIS: THE DTP MIXTAPE

I should probably fill you in since we’re on the topic.  My new drupal will be the content management platform for my new Ludacris fan site located at http://seethesite.name/ludacris.  Therefore, I had to place a php.ini in the ludacris directory folder. Can’t wait to get it up and running.  Hope to meet some cool peeps in the drupal community along with some Luda fans.

Do Follow Blog Search Engine, BlogFollower.com

Let’s see how it works.  Someone hit the free web design tutorials site at adobe-masters.com with the sole purpose of posting a comment.  The comment poster found my site at the “do follow blog search engine”, BlogFollower.com.  She wanted to comment on blog posts that had something to do with “templates“. Every post at my site that talked about templates showed up in the search query, enabling the girl to post her template related comment.  Because my site is “do follow” it recognizes the commenter’s link and treats it as a back link.

If you’re looking to add more links to your site, blogfollower.com, is a good place to start. On the other hand, I myself, would rather generate content instead of  going on a comment posting spree. Content is king and will result in back links automatically, but I do post comments not very often, on very rare occasions.  Hmmm, maybe I’ll send Deron out for relevant comments using this new resource I’ve found :-) .

How to Transfer SiteSell Domain Name to Godaddy from SBI
Its an easy process that can take less than ten minutes. Just click this godaddy link for domains and search for “Domain Transfers” on the side menu bar.  You’ll be prompted to pay the transfer fee which is currently $6.99.

After payment, Godaddy will send two emails.  One goes to your Godaddy email, the other goes to the email you have on file with SiteSell.  Check your emails, the email associated with your SiteSell account will provide you with a transaction id and security code.

Next, you’ll need to provide authorizaton at Godaddy.  Here’s a quick instruction on how to get there.

The last step states, “Enter the Authorization Code from the current registrar, and then click Finish.”  You’ll need to manage.opensrs.net and enter your sitesell domain management login information.  (Enter the username and password found in your email with subject “Site Build It! MAIL”)

Once logged into your account, click the “Domain Extras” link near the top of the screen to find the authorization code that will look something like “Uf2Pgxf3″.

Congratulations, the you’ve done your part for the domain transfer process. Be sure to configure your name servers if need be after completion.

It was just yesterday when I expressed my opinion about wordpress themes that contain 125 ad space for banners.  I like to select the templates that layout four of them like the thesis or the magonline wordpress theme that I suggested for the Ticket Marketplace Blog.

You’ll need to do some coding to insert ad space on your wordpress theme. I’d like to provide you with some code that you may use to achieve your goal.  Similiar to the 125 banner displays at ticket-marketplace.org, the code had been tested and works well as shown here.  However, you may need to adjust the css slightly to fit the dimensions of your sidebar.

How to Add 125 X 125 Ad Space on Wordpress

Add four 125 x 125 ad spaces to your blog with the steps outlined below:

1. Insert this css code to your stylesheet file, usually style.css
2. Insert this html into your sidebar file, usually sidebar.php

Upgrade in progress…
This website will be back online soon. We are currently performing an upgrade.

It was an upgrade to pligg 10. Gazetaplatense mentioned something similiar at the pligg forum, and apparrently overcame the problem by pointing to the actual install file instead of its folder.

My problem produces a different fix tip or mini web tut.  My install was complete but there was an upgrade message showing instead of my homepage.  That’s when I remembered the cool index.html that was uploaded to the server in step 3 of the upgrade instructions.   Your site visitors will appreciate the message letting them know that there’s an upgrade going on.  When the upgrade completes, you’re ready to go live again so it will be okay to delete the index.html file.  I got rid of the index.html and there was my homepage.   That’s it.  Subscribe here for more of the same in future updates.

Upgrading a pligg or any other website script can get messy but there’s always a way out as fustrating as it can be.  When I look at it from the bright side, its just another opportunity to publish a how-to-fix-it post as a web tutorial and helper for webmasters that may eventually run into the same problem.

Luckily I’ve only come across one issue that stood in the way of the site coming up,

“Error. The table_prefixconfig table is empty or does not exist”.

Did you get a “pligg_config table is empty or does not exist” error as well?  How to fix it…

I got a clue from tiger2f at a pligg forum thread that identified two files that were overwritten.  It was the ”dbconnect.php” and “settings.php” files that caused the warning error.  He made edits to the files, but I, as an alternative re-uploaded them from my original backups.  After re-uploading them to the server the upgrade was a success.

As a last effort, I had to perform a minor template tweak for a sidebar module I had from a previous pligg customization.  That’s it.  Subscribe here for more of the same in future updates.

I’ve been crying I need a new wordpress theme site after site.  How about re-using one of the best themes ever, the Structure template?  I’m using the structure theme at MyDiffers.com and its amazing.

Besides, I’ve taken lots of time to generate a nice color scheme for it, so why not use it elsewhere?  This baby is widgetized page by page, and its a shame it isn’t offered anymore.  However, if you’re looking for something good and one of the best, then check out the Thesis Premium Wordpress Theme instead.

One Theme Template for Multiple Sites - Wordpress

Wearing the same theme on more than one page may be the way to go if you manage a number of different sites.  This is something I usually don’t do, but it can bring the site together much faster with an established looked thats already approved of.  I see webmasters do it all the time.  Have you ever wore the same theme twice?

So now for a short spicypage review…

I’ve been receiving more web hits because of  this spice.  The site is a social network hangout for bloggers.  Each posting to the site has given me at least two back links.  For instance, adding adobe-masters.com to the network gained me links at spicypage, and a socialmedian link that originated from the spicypage rss feed of all the newly added sites.  I’m curious to know if there are any other sites pulling in the spicypage feed, but I’m sure there must be quite a few subscribers.
