The University of Technology Sydney Department of Mathematical Sciences is a leader in statistical and stochastic modelling and members of the department contribute to modelling in a diverse range of areas, including discrete choice modelling and quantitative risk management (including quantitative finance and stochastic numerical methods). We are looking to extend our involvement in modelling by making two appointments, one with a focus on mathematical and numerical modelling of stochastic phenomena and the other with a focus on statistical design and analysis. We expect that the appointees will also seek to engage with other groups in the Faculty of Science in the environmental and biological sciences and extend the Department’s modelling work in new directions driven by emerging applications of quantitative risk management, choice modelling, and statistical design and analysis in these areas. These positions are an excellent career progression for candidates who have a background in academic teaching and a deep knowledge in the relevant disciplines Contract Type: Fixed term, 5 years Qualification Level: PhD/Doctorate - High level academic and professional qualifications in the relevant discipline area or equivalent accreditation standing Job Ref No. R030409 For further information and apply online visit: http://www.hru.uts.edu.au/jobs/ Closing Date: 7th May 2009 Dr Tim Langtry, Department Head, Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science Telephone No: +61 2 9514 2236 Fax No: +61 2 9514 2260 Email: Tim.Langtry@uts.edu.au [Externalrss-eventsqf-titles-rssl-10-30] [Externalrss-msrecruitment-titles-rssr-10-30] [RandomProduct-126]

With banking careers no longer what they were, moving into academia is increasingly appealing. Greg Fleming's done it, and lots of other bankers apparently want to do it. Trouble is, becoming an academic isn't very easy. Greg isn't the only banker to have the idea. There's also Scott Moeller, a former Deutsche and Morgan Stanley banker turned CEO and director of executive education at Cass Business School; Simon Taylor, an ex-equity analyst at JPMorgan, turned director of the Master in Finance Programme at Judge Business School; or Duncan Angwin, a former corporate financier at Hambros Bank who's now associate professor of strategic management at Warwick Business School. Unfortunately, ex-bankers say academia is almost as difficult to get into as banking itself. "In many ways it is more competitive than banking because the achievement process is opaque, the measurements are almost exclusively subjective," says Peter Hahn, a former banker at Citigroup and academic fellow at Cass...
The employees of financial firms who have lost their jobs, and the ones who are about to lose their jobs, face a significant challenge in finding employment that will pay them nearly as well, says Kevin Kelly, chief executive of Heidrick & Struggles International, the major executive search firm. Mr. Kelly, who is based in Chicago, is also the author of the book, "Top Jobs: How They Are Different and What You Need to Succeed," which is to be published next month. In a recent interview, he said that some former financial services employees would have to move to other countries or work for non-American companies, while others would simply have to reinvent themselves.
Leon Sit writes over at Advanced Trading: There are many reasons to blame quants, correctly or otherwise, for the subprime and credit crisis. I graduated at a time when the crisis had just started. Job-hunting in a traditional quant area was nearly impossible for a new graduate like me. Almost every investment bank had a hiring freeze and the market was flooded with talented and experienced quants. Although employers on the buy side are still recruiting, quants with investment bank experience were more attractive hires than I was. Based on this experience, I think it will be very difficult for fresh graduates to enter the financial engineering industry in the near future. However, one should not be discouraged by current market conditions. I expect that the financial industry will become more quantitative after the recovery. I advise new graduates to look at what kind of opportunities the firm can offer you in the future when you consider possible employment. In the end, an education in mathematical finance will still enhance your career even in the difficult current market environment...
With words like "meltdown" and "turmoil" being widely used to describe the current state of the financial system, it may seem like an odd time for scientists to consider careers in finance. But in the spirit of good investment advice - buy low, sell high - this may be a good time for the finance-curious to give the industry a look. Financial services companies - banks, investment houses, hedge funds, insurance companies, and so on - have long recruited financial analysts from the ranks of physical scientists and mathematicians. Such scientists are valuable, in finance as elsewhere, thanks to their mathematical chops and analytical (and programming) skills. In January 2001, a Science's Next Wave (the predecessor of Science Careers) feature on financial analyst careers said: "[In] a financial market that is becoming more and more reliant on complex mathematics to determine opportunities, scientists are being hired in droves." Omit the words "in droves" from the end of that sentence, and the statement still applies... Read more in a feature by Alan Kotok for Science Careers which complements a previous article on Quants by Alaina G. Levine. You might also be interested in their feature by Amarendra Swarup on scientists who combine financial knowledge, knowledge of specific areas of science, and quantitative skills to advise investors on science and technology investments. There's also a podcast (mp3) in which Science Careers correspondant Chelsea Wald talks to Lee Maclin of the Courant Insitute at NYU about the work of quants and their career prospects.
Say you're a physicist with a strong mathematical background, eager for intellectual stimulation and pining for some challenging problems to solve. You could seek a faculty gig and spend the next couple of decades developing a theory of everything. Or you could become a "quant" (short for "quantitative analyst") and use advanced mathematics to help move mountains - of cash - through the world's financial systems. For anyone with a choice, Wall Street might not seem like an obvious employment destination at a time when the industry is crashing and burning. But quantitative analysis has a long history as an "alternative" career for scientists. In the past couple of decades, quants, in fact, have made themselves essential to the success--or failure--of financial-sector companies. It follows that despite the mortgage meltdown and the resulting credit calamity, exciting opportunities still exist for scientists with serious quantitative chops to work in finance--albeit, experts say, to a somewhat lesser extent in the near term. As scientific historian George Dyson says, in this time of crisis "we need more scientists in the banking system, not less." Alaina G. Levine writes in Science Magazine.
Dominic Connor Director P&D Quant Recruitment DOWNLOAD THE BOOK HERE Introduction to the 2nd Edition Since I wrote the first edition, things have got worse. Lehman has died, big Wall Street names are now slaves to retail banks, and apparently we are headed for a depression, followed by alien invasion and a plague of frogs. That is why this version calls these "interesting times", as in the ancient Chinese curse "may you live in interesting times". The market, Congress, plagues, the German government 'guaranteeing' then not 'guaranteeing' deposits, books by Justin London, etc, are all things outside my control, but what is clear to me that all is not lost, and that the outcome for each of us is yet to be determined, and regardless of the more hysterical headlines, we have to deal with it. So the things we describe in our main Career Guide are still true, but at this time there are some points I’d like to make that apply to the current situation. Rather than make you deal with >150 pages to find the information you might well need now, we’re sending you this supplement. The market is now more brutal, and if your motivation has been hurt by the way things are, one thing I will share having seen previous downturns is that the people who do best are those still standing when the trouble passes. This paper is aimed both at people who are looking for their first job, and those who have just lost their job.

With the banking industry in crisis, many job-seeking MBAs - especially those who once dreamed of lucrative careers in investment banking - are rushing to broaden their options by applying to consulting firms. And while it means more competition for jobs in that sector, for the firms doing the hiring, it means a more robust crop of candidates to choose from. Turnout at campus presentations this fall by consulting firms is up from last year, recruiters say. "We've seen attendance double at some campus venues, even people sitting on the floor," said Kermit King, a senior partner who heads recruiting in the Americas for Boston Consulting Group. "We think this reflects both the relative attractiveness of consulting as an industry and the relative strength of BCG within the industry in these tough times."... ...Consulting firms have historically shared talent with investment banks because the two fields demand many of the same personal attributes: analytical skills, quantitative ability, and a strong personality. However, some key differences exist between prototypical bankers and consultants... Alysa Teichman writes over at BusinessWeek.
