With banking careers no longer what they were, moving into academia is increasingly appealing. Greg Fleming's done it, and lots of other bankers apparently want to do it. Trouble is, becoming an academic isn't very easy. Greg isn't the only banker to have the idea. There's also Scott Moeller, a former Deutsche and Morgan Stanley banker turned CEO and director of executive education at Cass Business School; Simon Taylor, an ex-equity analyst at JPMorgan, turned director of the Master in Finance Programme at Judge Business School; or Duncan Angwin, a former corporate financier at Hambros Bank who's now associate professor of strategic management at Warwick Business School. Leon Sit writes over at Advanced Trading: There are many reasons to blame quants, correctly or otherwise, for the subprime and credit crisis. I graduated at a time when the crisis had just started. Job-hunting in a traditional quant area was nearly impossible for a new graduate like me. Almost every investment bank had a hiring freeze and the market was flooded with talented and experienced quants. Although employers on the buy side are still recruiting, quants with investment bank experience were more attractive hires than I was. Based on this experience, I think it will be very difficult for fresh graduates to enter the financial engineering industry in the near future. However, one should not be discouraged by current market conditions. I expect that the financial industry will become more quantitative after the recovery. I advise new graduates to look at what kind of opportunities the firm can offer you in the future when you consider possible employment. In the end, an education in mathematical finance will still enhance your career even in the difficult current market environment... With words like "meltdown" and "turmoil" being widely used to describe the current state of the financial system, it may seem like an odd time for scientists to consider careers in finance. But in the spirit of good investment advice - buy low, sell high - this may be a good time for the finance-curious to give the industry a look. Financial services companies - banks, investment houses, hedge funds, insurance companies, and so on - have long recruited financial analysts from the ranks of physical scientists and mathematicians. Such scientists are valuable, in finance as elsewhere, thanks to their mathematical chops and analytical (and programming) skills. In January 2001, a Science's Next Wave (the predecessor of Science Careers) feature on financial analyst careers said: "[In] a financial market that is becoming more and more reliant on complex mathematics to determine opportunities, scientists are being hired in droves."
