The biggest threat to anyone’s retirement is the amount of consumption happening in the daily lives of all Americans. We spend almost 90 % of discretionary income buying an immense amount of stuff we probably could live without. Is shopping Americas Biggest addiction, I believe it is and the numbers behind it easily back this up. If we look beyond the needs of the average person it goes to show that living the American dream is definitely misguided in todays society.

Overall consumption is basically hurting the planet, robbing our future, making people addicted to a so called shopping thrill, and setting up the next generation for an epic failure in the future. In contrast the government loves to report the increases in GDP which is fueled in part by our shopping and spending behaviors. The Gross Domestic Product figure in 2018 will probably be at an all time record high of 20 trillion dollars. IF I’m not mistaken that figure has doubled in the last 10 years since 2008. It is projected to reach 24 trillion by 2021. What does this say about where we are spending the good old Benjamin’s?

I have a shopping mall about 10 minutes away from me and on any given Sunday it is full by 10 am. The parking lots are overcrowded with cars by people aimlessly shopping inside the mall for unnecessary things. Its hard to fathom that everyone who is in attendance at the mall on the weekends is in search for a need. NO they are searching for wants and the list of wants gets bigger every year to coincide with the GDP growth.

Is Shopping Americas Biggest Addiction?

Gambling in the United States is a severe problem and only getting worse as in 2016 the amount of legalized gambling was 116 billion dollars as reported. Just imagine the amount of illegal gambling added to the amount above. Now contrast this with the amount people spend shopping 10 trillion dollars. Granted a vice like gambling compared to the amount spent on consumption is not a fair comparison due to the fact that not everyone gambles but everyone consumes something. Putting aside the total consumption figure and seeing the effects of hyper buying, low savings rates (5%) and the lack of recognition that an overspending problem exists is a red light on our American way of life. This is why I believe spending addiction is greater than gambling addiction. We are rolling the dice in the next few decades and things need to change for the positive.

The fact of the matter is that this spending trend cannot be sustained any longer and the first step is to admit that a majority of people have a spending addiction. If you make 50K a year, spend most of it on housing, transportation, and taxes. The last small percentages go to debt, food, and vices. The trick is that we must reverse padding the companies pockets and instead increase the personal savings rate to 15% at a minimum, once the debt is managed or eliminated.

The real cure is finding what is causing the overspending, which will help to heal the unhappiness occurring either at work or home. Once you can trace it to the root of the problem then you can come out feeling more confident with finances. When you feel the urge to shop or spend unwisely begin to do your most enjoyable hobby. For example you can read a book, walk, watch a movie, go to visit family. Join me in sharing and participating in a new challenge #Save>spend. Savings is always greater than spending.

I listen to a podcast called the million dollar plan. It is a 1 on 1 interview style show where the host discusses the finances of a featured guest. The gist of it is to reveal when the interviewee will reach a million dollars. That million dollar day could be 4 decades in the future, but the host (Pete) discusses with them how to speed up that process and reach a million dollars sooner with several action steps. Motivating People to Reach a Million Dollars is necessary to any money coach. Because when clients succeed everyone wins.

Now with this topic about finances fresh in your mind, do you have any idea when you will reach a million dollars, or if you even have a plan to reach it? Many people in the media now days always put off a million bucks like it’s not enough. But believe me a million bucks far supersedes the investment accounts of most baby boomers. The average boomer over 60 years of age has about 2ooK in retirement accounts as advertised in the same media outlets that say a million is chump change.

Motivating People to Reach a Million Dollars

As for me I will reach a million in the year 2030 with a bit of luck and consistent contributions. But do not hit me up for loans at that time as I don’t believe in indebtedness or loaning to family members as it tends to ruin relationships. That goal is just an estimate based off the calculations and current savings rate maintained, also if the markets stay on pace with 8% return on money.

I am writing this to motivate everyone reading this to do more financially. Just the other day it was 2009, and now 10 years later how much more do you have saved compared to then? So what does that tell you, time is passing fast, and we need to reach that million ASAP? For many hard working people that million will provide the investor with 40,000 thousand dollars in dividend income. Which in turn could replace income from a full time job.

Imagine what life would feel like if you could work for 3 more years after reaching a mill, maintain the full time job, a fully padded Emergency fund, effectively maxing out a 401K, reinvesting $40K from dividends, maxing out a Roth IRA, No Debt, and can still enjoy life? That is a real possibility with the choices you make today. Take the steps and proceed to do at least 1 financial action activity weekly to speed up your million dollar day. Dreams become reality, and the reality will turn into an Unfathomable life later.

Hello readers I want to share with you a tactic you can implement this year to help you make some extra money in 2018 and beyond. These tactics can be used during the holidays only, as there is a ton of ways to make extra money. The only real way you can make this work is if you save most of your vacation days throughout the year, to be used in the last two weeks in December. The reason to do this is to make extra money, while still getting paid from your regular employer. The only difference is you will not be sitting on the couch watching TV, but you will be out there hustling to make at least 2-4 thousand dollars in 2 weeks. That’s why you should find a Side Hustle During the Holidays For Extra Money.

Depending how much energy you have you can really actually make this much extra money. The purpose for the extra money is for you to get some traction with debt, emergency fund money, avoid living paycheck to paycheck, and maybe adding some vacation fund money. The point is to, Make Money, not make it rain on Amazon wish lists. The consumption during the holidays is staggering, and guess what if you’re working you will not be consuming. I have found that I spend more on days off, than on days when I’m working. So work while still young and able, and get a head of all these crazy money goals you should complete today.

Side Hustle During the Holidays For Extra Money

Extra Hustle 1:

UPS Helper / Assistant – The online shopping phenomenon will only grow every year as online merchants look to push more products next year. The emails flood your inbox faster than you can blink, because every company wants to get to your dollars first. The good thing about you doing this hustle is that you will be the one delivering all those packages and not spending money to buy them. UPS has received extra media negativity this year for not being able to handle the Christmas delivery load and many packages were delayed a day or two after the last holiday. What does this mean going forward; UPS will hire more drivers and helpers to handle the expansion within online sales. Since you will be free from the day job, you can get up early and tackle a shift with the opportunity to do a plethora of overtime.

Extra Hustle 2:

Food Delivery Driver / Uber/ Uber Eats – This can be done after your UPS shift or as your only extra hustle in the 2 week extra money stint. People do not want to cook on certain days leading up to Christmas and after as well. They want to enjoy the time with family opening gifts and spending time together. Many food places will be hiring during that time frame, especially Pizza Fast food spots.

Extra Hustle 3:

Retail Stores – These places will be open for long hours, and they typically need a lot of help. Yes you might only make 10-12 dollars an hour, but hey think of it like this; you are already getting paid from your regular job as vacation time. Any extra income will be added as gravy and you can end the year with a good bonus to the annual income. Plus if you work at a place where you can get 50% off, then that can be your Christmas gifts for your loved ones. Just be mindful not to blow your full two weeks of pay on gifts.

Extra Hustle 4:

Restaurant Waiter – After your morning shift you can take another one from 5pm till 11pm working at a another restaurant. The tips during the holidays will be bigger due to the generosity flying all over the air during the holidays. Yes you might be on your feet for over 10 hours, but hey it’s a small sacrifice to succeed with money.

Extra Hustle 5:

Random Current Skill – This 5th side job is to use any skill you currently have to find some freelance work. Do you know how to play the guitar, then find some students you can teach? Do you do graphic design during your day job; well find a few clients for those two weeks. The point is to use the skills you currently have to network and get your name out in the marketplace. Maybe you can become a full time freelancer all year round.

In conclusion I hope you can save up the days to take off during the holidays this year or next year to work an extra side hustle. The purpose for the extra side job; is for the money to be used to pay off debt, finally fund the imaginary emergency fund, save for a down payment, save for travel in 2019, or any other money goals you have that you need to accomplish.

What’s going on my friends today we will discuss charities and why I find it important to give back? So I usually give to charities every year because giving makes me happy and so far this year I’ve given the most ever. I hope that the amounts donated have made an impact on those organizations and the people they support. That truly is what charity should be meant for, to make a difference in the lives of others. Keep reading below to find out why my give back story changed this year for the better.

On a random weekday morning I get an email for J. Money over at Budgets are sexy and he goes on to say that he is looking for a group of 20 bloggers who will help spread joy and cheer by donating 100 dollars to cause important to them. I immediately jumped on it because it is the season of giving and since it rings true with my beliefs. I come from a middle class family and my parents encouraged giving back to those less fortunate, because it was the right way to live.

So the task began to find 3 organizations that we can help with their cause this holiday season. After thinking it over for a few days, something clicked and I thought why not support 3 organizations that are present in my life right now and that I have never been a contributor before. The 3 organizations I picked were the Les Turner ALS Foundation, The make a wish organization, and last but not least the Havasole organization. The reason why these 3 entities were chosen is because each one has a special meaning in my life right now.

Give Back Story

The 1st organization is The Les Turner ALS Foundation is all about finding treatment and support services to those affected by ALS. My mother passed away from a similar disease called PLS(Primary lateral sclerosis ). So the donation to this organization will help future generations of people suffering with ALS / PLS symptoms. Hopefully more information and resources will be used to spread awareness to this disease and the cause to cure it. I’ve given to ALS before just not to this specific charity all in honor of my mom’s name. If they can help families overcome suffering from ALS/PLS symptoms it will be all worth it.

The 2nd organization I choose was the Make a Wish charity, because I believe kids who are suffering deserve the happiest time while battling for their lives. I’ve witnessed online some awesome wishes being granted to sick patients and it just makes me smile to see them so happy. I usually support children charities because I love kids, and they need more support in the final stage of life. A cool feature of this charity is you can find a local chapter and your support can go to those kids in your local area or state.

The 3rd organization is Havasole which gives homeless people a pair of functional sneakers so that they can walk with less stress. The sneakers will ultimately help them avoid foot, knee and back problems as older sneakers naturally lose the support needed to walk. I feel this charity is great because sneakers are important to me and I know how happy people get when they receive a brand new or gently used pair of kicks. A box of sneakers is on the way to California.

So in true give back fashion I used the money gifted by J. Money from Rockstar Finance, I immediately matched the amount given, and my job also matched the amount. So PF bloggers love using 2 words called compound interest, well I will call this give back story, Compound Giving. The amount given X3 equals 3 times the support, and as you already may know 3 is a lucky number in my book. I think giving back is necessary but giving back during the holidays makes it that much special.

Last but not lease have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2018.

Live for today and tomorrow while you formulate your own give back story. – Rich Uncle EL

There is no trick involved in retiring comfortably. It’s often difficult to accept that you can obtain extraordinary results by ordinary means, but our desire to rely on a wing and a prayer can have devastating consequences on our retirement savings. Understanding the basics of your finances and investments can be as easy as reading a few finance and investment news articles on a regular basis.

The key factors to financial security in retirement are time and commitment. Here are 5 tips, which will help you pave the way to a comfortable retirement:

Always have a plan

The first step is to identify your goals. As a rule of thumb, you should aim at saving approximately 17 times your pre-retirement salary by the time you retire. This is, however, based on a certain set of assumptions: Therefore you may have to adjust your savings plan if your investment returns and spending habits deviate from the assumptions. It is important to note that the sum you are required to save to meet your goal will increase as you near retirement if you don’t start saving early enough. The earlier you start, the longer you have to benefit from compound interest.

You must account for inflation

Inflation erodes the buying power of your money; therefore your returns need to compensate for this effect. Risky, high-return investments can fluctuate wildly over the short term, but the key here is to remain calm. Instead focus on taking a long-term approach: Look at the returns over a 3 – 5 year period, since short-term fluctuations typically smooth out over time.

You can’t predict the future

Investments can and will undergo short-term fluctuations. Uncertainty in the market can make people uncomfortable and, as humans, we have a bias towards action. We tend to respond emotionally to a short-term downturn in the market, which can lead to switching. Switching is the act of selling one investment and buying another. The best thing to do in these situations is often nothing, as switching can often destroy the value of an investment and lock in losses. The most important thing to remember is your long-term goal.

Diversification

Diversification is only effective if done in a meaningful way. Most people view diversification as the act of investing in many different unit trusts, but this only really works if the investment consists of different assets or the unit trusts are managed in a variety of ways. It is less effective if you invest in similar unit trusts.

A balanced fund can give you exposure to a variety of asset classes, but investing in multiple balanced funds does not necessarily mean greater diversification: Finely spreading your investment could net you returns that are no better than the market average, while you pay higher fees.

Start as soon as possible

Many people view saving as a sacrifice. It can be difficult to put money aside for the distant future, especially when you first start working. That’s why many people opt to skip the first 10 years of saving, thinking it will have minimal consequences on the future. What they fail to take into account is the effect of time on financial success. Compound interest is the real magic behind turning a portion of your income into a comfortable retirement and its key ingredient is time. Delaying your savings plan by 10 years could potentially lose you almost half of your prospective returns than if you started on day one.

If you haven’t started yet, then the best time is right now. These basic tips will not be easy to implement. They require discipline and consistency. There is no magical solution. Your future is under your control.

If you feel overwhelmed then why not consult a good independent financial advisor who can help you make sense of all the information and formulate a plan?

What’s your financial purpose in life? Do you feel finances drive other areas of life? I would imagine it does because money affects life in many ways. Does the financial purpose intermingle with your life’s overall purpose? To me I believe it doesn’t, but then again it can. Purpose is defined as an outcome or idea that is the object of an action or effort. Finding financial purpose is your task by the end of reading this post because without it you will be lost in 401K Sea.

Someone’s life purpose might be to become a nurse or a lawyer, but how does that correlate to finding financial purpose. Think of it as what is the objective of your hard earned money you will earn in that profession? The activities and choices pursued today, will ultimately help you have unbelievable freedom later.

Finding Financial Purpose

My financial purpose in life is to live off my finances with assets in order to find freedom to pursue personal and professional passions. Did I just define FI in another light?

Well I think we all have a different yet similar versions of what FI means. Finding financial purpose is constantly on my mind due to several factors.

I am a risk adverse person and if I reach this goal, I would feel more at ease with my situation. Too many factors in life that can derail your progress in an instant cloud my mind on the daily.

What can you do to avoid thinking about the worst case scenarios when you’re hard wired to think like that? This is the reason I do not gamble, because I know the outcome, and losing money doesn’t sit right with me. Does this make me a negative thinking person? I tend to see it as I’m being realistic with the statistics in front of me.

Do you have more than one financial goal that will help you achieve the overall purpose? Goals and the difficulty of sticking to them are what people run away from. If you can complete goal after goal without hampering your regular life more power to you.

Goals have a way of psyching me up, which leads to trying to complete more goals. A goal is a stepping stone to reaching the ultimate financial purpose. If you find a thought that will help you financially, take action immediately as that could be a hidden stepping stone to another level in finding financial purpose. If you succeeded in finding financial purpose and didn’t take action towards accomplishing it, then you will stay in place until effort is taken to persevere.

What is 1 goal or action step you can take today to find your FFP?

-Write down or think about what do you want to do with money

-Make a 5 year plan of where you want to be financially

-What is 1 thing that makes you happy about finances or money?

Knowing answers to these 3 questions might get you 1 step closer to finding FFP.

What’s going on my friends? Today we have a great topic on the blog, and it is to renounce the side hustle mentality. Why would I, a personal finance junky tell you to forget the side hustle? Because 1- it is a bit overrated, and 2- because you really do not need it if you focus on the personal finance basics from an early age.

Let me explain a bit more before some of you go crazy in the comments below. The side hustle is only needed if you are in need of cash to cover you for a variety of financial stresses. Like paying off debt, saving for a down payment, or to finally build up an emergency fund. Obviously the side hustle is important if you are facing a scenario I just mentioned, but keep in mind it will take away from much needed free time.

Life is a balance and if you work 40 hours a week at the full time job and then clock in another 20 hours per week at the side hustle it will diminish all the fun things you can be doing to live life. Granted if you are a single person and have gobs of free time then by all means go at it and hustle your heart away. Keep reading below to fully understand the meaning of forget the side hustle.

Forget the Side Hustle

If you begin from your very first job, saving 25% of all income you will be a ahead of most people. By doing this you will naturally take a percentage to fund investing and to fund emergency funds.

Avoid Debt by all means necessary as debt is the number 1 reason people get a Side Hustle in the first place. If you do not have debt your income should be enough to fund lifestyle and saving goals.

Slowly and Gradually build passive income sources to help you in the future. Extra income is nothing to laugh at and it will have your back if and when the time comes that you need it.

Well these are the basic principles why I think many millennials can forget the side hustle. By planning prior to getting trapped in the average American’s whirlwind of financial stress. As widely publicized the average student loan debt is 25K and the average credit card debt is around 8k. To happily say you avoided these financial norms is a feat you can be proud of.

If you happen to be 1 of the lucky few who already is going above and beyond the 3 personal finance tips above. I foresee an early retiree, if the person continues on the right path for 10 plus years. Money management is meant to be executed in this manner. Do not let others steer you wrong.

If anyone reading this is 21 years old and can effectively follow the steps listed within this post, I applaud you and congratulate the hustle you will make to avoid the forced side hustle in the future. Because the point of life is to live free without restrictions and by following the steps above you will set yourself up for freedom.

If you tackle all these 3 things you will automatically be able to forget the side hustle for life.

For me I find life rewarding when I’m constantly pursuing a goal. For this blog Let’s focus on financial goals because that’s why we are here. What Life and Goals do you want to pursue? Think about this before reading the post.

My current finances are in decent shape, so I believe it’s imperative for me to tailor my goals to how Good or bad my fiscal status is. Can they be improved, of course and this is the reason why I stay pursuing goals. How can you go about improving financially?

Income is the Key!!!

If you have a big chunk of discretionary income left over every month, I assume you can knock off bigger goals faster. The opposite scenario is if you have less funds left over, then goals like debt payoff might take a bit longer.

This is the key to finances, taking action when the moment presents itself or being patient until things get better. We can’t disregard a big surplus of income to be consumed entirely. If you strike now and set yourself up for later it will pay off. The future is uncertain as you never really know when that big income might be gone forever. Also for the simple fact that investments grow more with time and get bigger and bigger the longer you hold them.

On the flip side a person who doesn’t have enough margin has to be extremely patient to what the situation is now. It takes effort and focus to dig out of a hole. Its been done in the past and anyone can do it with a good plan in place today. The proper planning and budgeting will give you hope and a better future when income is low. It will also allow you to spend without stress as you now have allocated $$$ percentages to the appropriate categories.

How you use that Key (Income) will be the deciding factor to being a rockstar with finances. -Rich Uncle EL

High Income – Save / Invest as Much as Possible – Buy Assets that Produce more Income – Don’t Expect that Income to be around forever

Low Income – Budget to pay off debt – Increase Income with Side Jobs – Cut Expenses

Is the Life you want and the Goals you pursue intertwined in a sense? Well to me that is a very clear yes. One day I want to spend some money and the next day I want save some money. As long as you end up saving more than you spend and you can still pay bills you will be fine. As I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Goals were made to be smashed. Keep breaking records like Stephen Curry and Lebron James and you will be OK with Life.

Some of My Financial Goals are:

Eventually Reach FI

Saving up to Pay for a Cash Car (No Debt)

Saving to Help Kids Pay Some of College Costs

Stacking dollars for a Passion Business In FI

Life and Goals involves a steady diet of financial Balance. Are you up to the challenge to make 2017 the best year ever for handling money?

Stop Spending 100% Income

Do you know a high number of people spend over a 100% of income. They do not have margin in life. They continue to spend on unnecessary things. They continue to spend in order to find happiness. It is the 1 number rule in the area of money management. Hey stop the crying and stop the spending in order to find surplus funds. The choice to funnel 20% of pay from the very first paycheck will allow you the margin you need to not abuse personal finance. Obviously if in Debt you might not be able to funnel 20%, and thus should be directed towards debt.

Avoid Paying Interest for Debt as it’s a black hole

Paying interest on money you don’t own is the ultimate trap. Pretending to be OK financially, while borrowing on debt to fund a lifestyle is never good. Be creative to find ways to pay it back or to avoid it at all costs. Debt is never the answer and those who tell you it is, are stuck in debt themselves. They want company and you should immediately stop listening to that advice. I’ve been in and out of debt and I’ll be honest being in debt is stressful, and those times when out of debt felt great. Avoid giving free money away and tell the banks to keep their expensive loans.

The 3 Rules of Money Management

Invest and Save so that Money Works for you, and has your Back

Hey did you know money grows on trees literally. It is called compound interest. You invest and plant the tree, and every year it surprises you with free money. No I’m not talking about a get rich quick Bit coin scheme or it’s cousin Gold funds. Invest in stable Index funds, or individual stock investments that pay you dividends and grow. If you invest 100 you can expect to earn at least 4 dollars in dividends annually. Plus you can always get your 100 dollars back if you choose. Also the savings you stack is a way to avoid adding debt during tough times. Once you’re somewhat debt free and can afford to set aside at least 8 to 15% consistently try to invest or save funds. It will only help you and allow you freedom later. Trust me no one ever said I shouldn’t have saved so much money!!!!

Hey what’s going on my great readers. Today we will analyze something people will most likely give you a cross eyed stare if you bring up this topic. It is something many are too scared to bring up due to peer pressure. But I am up for the challenge, because I feel this topic is right up my alley with owning this PF blog. Let’s contemplate the title a bit and see why certain people want to be enslaved to luxury brands. Does Buying Luxury Brand Products Enslave you to Them? I truly believe so because the mark up is so ridiculous for no apparent reason except that it has the name or logo on the product.

Even Kanye West once said it in a song called New Slaves on the Yeezus album. He is the king of contradiction with his music / message and then does the opposite when it comes to selling his own line of products. He says people buy all the same thing, but its all peachy if they buy his $200 dollar sweater with holes in them. He gets on people for buying competing luxury brands, and his clothing pieces are extremely high in price just like the luxury brands.

Does Buying Luxury Brand Products Enslave you to Them?

Always contemplate if it’s financially smart to buy a product that costs $500 dollars to $2000 grand in order to feel validated? What does that say about you, that you have to buy something meaningless to feel happy for the opinion of others? A $1,000 dollar jacket will not protect you any better from the elements compared to a $100 dollar jacket.

If you happen to save 30% of income, pay all bills on time, avoid adding debt for lifestyle, do not live with mom / dad, and still manage to afford these luxurious products. By all means you have all the right to buy as your heart desires. But if you are not investing, It is not financially smart to spend as much for those brands. Until you get finances in order you can find so many other brand alternatives and substitutes for 1/4 the cost.

Gucci, Prada, Louie V, Fendi, Burberry they have done nothing but prey on the masses wallets, so why would I support them just to show off aka floss. If you need to floss in any way just do it with your personality, with your smile, with a hug. (Which are all free by the way?) I don’t see why buying something that is worth about 1 weeks’ worth the average person’s salary shouldn’t make you happy. So you make 20 times the average person’s salary, that is great for you, but can I ask you how much money you donated this year? Or how much cash you’ve invested towards your future this year?

When you are walking down the street, how do you truly know if the well-dressed person who is wearing luxury brands purchased it for full retail or bought it in china town? The point is you can’t tell from a quick glance.

Does Buying Luxury Brand Products Enslave you to Them? @Moneywatch101

Powered By the Tweet This Plugin

Tweet This

I once saw a YouTuber buy $2500 sneaker that a crazy rapper made famous. He actually paid that amount for something that will get beat up by walking on dirty streets. The most I’ve ever paid for sneakers is $200 dollars. I guess its all relative to income, but even if I made $300K a year I would not buy $2500 sneakers or a $500 dollar sweater. Most of the people who over spend for luxury are fueled by the hype to appease the masses with a fake luxurious lifestyle.

So in conclusion, are you a slave to luxury brands if you only buy those types of products for astronomical prices? I would have to say yes because the cost is so above the norm compared to mid and lower tier brands with products just as reliable for a fraction of the price. Maybe certain people want to join an imaginary club that I don’t care to join for the sake of finding approval from eyeballs. The value of a dollar is important, and when you subject yourself to buying luxury brands, you are not getting the best trade off and value for your dollars.

I can afford to buy any product from any luxury brand, but my financial intelligence mixed with opportunity loss of a dollar will not let me make a stupid financial decision like that. Rich Uncle EL
