i've abandoned you LJ, i know. i moved onto blogger which seems to be where all the cool kids are at, but perhaps i'm wrong in assuming it's completely dead here. plus, you've still got those nifty communities. so i've decided to post some more here for a little bit!

lately i've been working my way to getting into calarts. so i've been focusing on life drawing

nick kroll is my new favorite.

<lj-embed id="72" />
Bobby Bottleservice Tshirt Ideas for Jersey Shore - watch more funny videos

i almost forgot another gem. kristen stewart's a hooker in her new movie. but it is all sorts of confusing. its amazing. who's the old dude? costumer? father? did they edit out her being naked? will she continue to cuss even though she has a swear jar? help me decipher this clip.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/welcome_to_the_rileys/trailers/11123780

i took a break from digital work and finished this watercolor piece.

earlier today i was instant messaged by two strangers. one messaged me because he saw me at a gallery the other night and the other found me through my art. both were really nice conversations. things that are random aren't really that random to me anymore. things that are "random" happen all the time. it's nice when you can accept it and get over the initial shock or doubt and just have fun and enjoy it.

the more i put out there in the world, whether it's uploading my work on a website, or networking with people and getting involved in projects i feel like i attract the right crowd to me. i'm very happy with the way this works. you meet amazing people simply by striving to achieve what you love. it's only hard when you just sit there and wonder why.

earlier this week i went to see evil dead: the musical. whenever it comes to your town i highly recommend it. i forget how engaging plays are. i guess the actors differ depending on the area. i loved the actors that put on the show in my city so much. just great timing and facial expressions. it reminded me how i felt when i was part of...not a play but a showcase of skits and stand up. the energy brews up and explodes backstage. everyone bonds and gives such wonderful support. then you go out and celebrate afterwards. you become a family with these people who you never would have talked to anywhere else. and i really appreciate getting to experience that moment. i felt like i got a taste of what that life is like. even if i didnt come out with a long lasting friendship with any one of them. that really wasnt the focus. i loved them all that night and always will. its the memory that matters the most.

anyway enough of the hippie talk--i tried searching for a youtube video with the same actors here in phoenix. nothing unfortunately. most of the clips i found were performed kind of cheesy like which i didnt get at all in the performance i saw. but i settled for this. it should give you a good idea:

<lj-embed id="69" />

Oh hey, here are some online collaborations with my fellow artist friend, David Bessent.

I've got some exciting projects planned for me this year. One of those projects includes an animation with my friend in comedy. It will be under his LLC name and will be the fullest animation project/challenge for me. I drew up some concept art for the main character who fights nightmares for people by literally going into their dreams.

Also, I just wrote this to a friend describing this past Saturday night:

we were going out with his friends to meet up with more friends at this bar. but it was really small and not a lot of people were there. but right next to it was this lodge filled with middle aged white people. apparently one of his friends met his girlfriend there (i have no idea why a young person would be hanging out there, but i guess you can find love anywhere) and he was stuck with a membership so it was kinda okay that we were hanging out there and eating the food (well, it was just me eating). and the moment i walk in this large pear shape of a woman with short blonde man hair and glasses is getting ready to karaoke "because i got high" and i feel like i walk into a tim and eric skit. so naturally my friend and i ended up karaoking to "long train running" by the doobie brothers. then after many hand claps from old drunk strangers and a mission accomplished, we snuck off immediately to the bar we were supposed to be at next door. and i just played the adams family pinball machine there until we left to our destination. and i had the best first club experience ever. we made a circle and when people crossed us we formed a bridge with our hands and some people high fived us and we occasionally brought strangers to dance in our circle. it was a blast to be had by all. boogied so hard my calves ached a day later.

I made some major progress in a month. And I sold 75 bucks worth. I think I am a legit art-est now, you guys.
i love this new rejuvenation for creating art now. i'm thinking of my audience as opposed to solely thinking of myself. and that has inspired so much out of me. i want to try new styles, do new subjects, draw comics, create storybook narratives. i look forward to how well they fare with the masses. i also have chosen not to capitalize anything now.

man http://hypem.com/#/popular are kicking out the jams tonight! just discovered/downloaded so many new artists.

so i'll share:
i can't get over flying lotus' new track.
http://blahblahblahscience.com/track-reviews/flying-lotus-do-the-astral-plane/

and this new cat, aloe blacc who's sound is bringing back that retro soul that i love so, so much.
http://harmondrive.com/2010/04/02/i-need-a-dollar-aloe-blacc/

apparently these guys haven't released a proper album so i grabbed all the remixes i could find. they're so great! i can't get enough of this dancey 80's disco revival.
http://wearepajamas.wordpress.com/2010/04/02/penguin-prison-starsmith-rac/

So, has anyone had a dream where you're not part of it? It's like you're just watching a movie. I had one a few mornings ago. I was watching this girl and her friend and you know those 80's movies where they switch bodies/becoming older? well she and i guess her friend were trying out their new grown-up bodies at a club and she had rented this snazzy white dress and while she was dancing something happened and she coughed blood or something. so when she returned the dress back the guy who owned the place didn't see the stain 'til later and became furious. cut to the next scene the main star is hanging out with the geeky boy character (probably was in love with her and she didn't know it sorta plot) and the man from the rental shop came in and it was implied he was gonna do some blackmailing.

i told you it was stupid.

now here's an excerpt from a conversation with my friend.

ME 11:15 PM
hah kinda in love with this band called penguin prison atm
11:15 PM
i think im gay
11:15 PM
just listened to a "dirty disco" remix
11:16 PM
i am certainly gay.

FRIEND 11:16 PM
i hope not

ME 11:16 PM
too late

FRIEND 11:16 PM
any other gay traits?

ME 11:16 PM
i wear plaid

No one got anywhere from doubting themselves.

What I wrote in my title has been my mantra recently. I thought of it about a week ago when I started to get a bit down on myself. That's when I had thoughts about how I might not be accepted to Calarts, rethinking my personal skills and wondering about how I'll ever reach the success I've created my goals around. They can tear a person down, but you'll never achieve if you sit in your doubts. So, my title is a quote that weaved its way through my discouraging thoughts and found its way into my motivation. Maybe you can use it too.

Well, here's the plus sides of my life so far this year:

I got paid for the first time doing a stand up gig. 20 bucks. Not too shabby, right?
I sold a couple of prints for 10 bucks each last First Friday, which is a local art walk here in Phoenix.
I also set up a future cartoon project for myself to work on in case I do stay here for another year. A friend of mine wrote the script and recorded all the voices already. It's up to me to animate now!

Another ongoing project is to work on my art and try to get more reactions. Among researching/backtracking to the basics and fundamentals of art, First Friday will help me receive instant feedback.

I'm all about doing something different with my style, subjects and placement now. So the above piece is nothing like what I've done before. It's the first of many more art pieces that are going to be a part of my "evolution", so to say, as an artist.

I had saved a few jpegs of my progress to get feedback from friends. Maybe you'd be interested in the early stages.

Let me know your thoughts!

Also, WHO'S EXCITED FOR TRON LEGACY. Daft Punk is apparently doing the score. Can't wait 'til it leaks. I've got my What.cd account waiting to fire it up the downloading.

EDIT: speaking of movies, I had to come back after learning about how legit the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack will be. I have to admit, after being quite skeptical at the initial wave of news about the movie, the articles, and production photos have gotten me way, way psyched.

Link: http://sheenabeaston.typepad.com/sheena-beaston/2010/03/metric-black-sheep-new-song-on-scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world-ost.html

So I drew up something to post since everything is unfinished and in progress. I typed in "drawing meme" in google and found that someone had started a "draw yourself from highschool" and decided it would be fun to point out how much of a dork i was to the internet.

On another note, I am falling in love with this French DJ, Danger. He makes some hot beats that sound like 80's soundtracks mixed with 8-bit mixed with a fist pump to the face. I love the way he markets himself.

also. he's a hunk-a-sarus even with an 80's background.

check the myspace for more amazement: http://www.myspace.com/2emedanger

finally saw Avatar. i get all CGI, motion capture stuff yadda yadda yadda, but Sam Worthington's skinny, handicapped legs takes the cake imo.

arizona had a tornado warning today and the governor declared a state of emergency. to quote my friend's status update:
"FUCK HAITI!!!!!!!!!!

I recently finished this piece! It was done on some thin cardboard from Starbucks. Can you believe they throw these things out?
<lj-embed id="60" />
She's just doing by ~eel-hips on deviantART

Here's more from my friend marathon week. We went to Gameworks (the other only existing arcade around these parts) and we played Taiko Drum, DDR, took purikura and did karaoke. I basically went to Japan.

Selecting a song.
<lj-embed id="61" />

The movies they played in the background kept throwing me off. I mention the band Trapt here because we were mentally bookmarking their song, "Headstrong" as our next target.
<lj-embed id="62" />

Couldn't help but do a little movie dub.
<lj-embed id="63" />

When you see Men in Black as an option for a song selection, you have to choose. It's a legit rule somewhere I'm sure. But I think the lyrics were wrong or it was speed up because we did not have our big Willie style flow.
<lj-embed id="64" />

hello internet friends and fiends.

i have decided that 2010 is my year for exploration and experimentation with a focus towards getting my career started.

<lj-embed id="39" />
vinyl record by ~eel-hips on deviantART

i've applied to Calarts and i've never spent so much time dedicated towards something i want. i was able to meet the rigorous portfolio requirements and i believe it's the first time i've ever felt that i gave it the best i could. my biggest weakness was that i never took a life drawing class before. so i drew a lot of nakey people to come up with some quality pieces. i feel confident about my work i submitted and i think i will stand out.
I have my portfolio up here for those who are curious:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/godjira/sets/72157622952156695/

i'll know when i get accepted by april 1st. so until then i've planned some goals to keep me occupied.

continue my art makin' machine process
sell my art. through sites, artwalks. see if my art is marketable.
continue doing stand up. go to open mics.
work with flash. make some cartoons.
clean my computer. holy 8 GBS free batman.
organize and put photos in albums.

i got really into animating in flash and this is from my huge choose your own adventure game. it was done all frame by frame and took me ages. it's not finished only because i have to solve some code issues. ugh. but at least for now i can share some scenes.

<lj-embed id="40" />
Enter the Nightmare by ~eel-hips on deviantART

so i dedicated the first week of the new year to hang out and reconnect with some friends that i've ignored during my portfolio process. i'll share my adventures in posts.

Dollar stores provide so many jokes.
<lj-embed id="57" />

<lj-embed id="42" />

at the rare and almost extinct arcade i saw many wonders.

i watched this girl shred on guitar hero.
<lj-embed id="43" />

i also watched this guy combo in ddr.
<lj-embed id="44" />

BRING BACK PUPPETS HOLLYWOOOOOOD.

speaking of, i recently went to hollywood, ca. more on that in the next post!

here's something i animated recently just in time for my trip to california for portfolio day and visiting calarts but stop making me talk about that. i'll tell you all in the next post!

bending by ~eel-hips on deviantART

i've decided that i want to go to calarts for character animation. i wanna animate trippy kid's (but really for adults) shows. the kind you remember when you're older and the way it made you feel creeped out and excited at the same time. stuff like this:
<lj-embed id="34" />

i make up drawing games that you can play with your friends too. tell everyone to draw a random subject. animals are usually a riot, but you can go as far as saying draw a squid eating a cheeseburger while being attacked by a ninja sunset. the more abstract the better. so while in class, i told my friend to draw batman if he were gay and fat. and here is my result.

<lj-embed id="35" />
Gay Fatman by ~eel-hips on deviantART

i might animate a short later in the future.

I've never done this before and I'm quite excited for it. I will be offering prints of my babies to the public at an artwalk here in Phoenix, Arizona.

PROBLEM: I don't know what pieces appeal to the masses!

SOLUTION (your part!): Please pick the pieces you like the most or whatever catches your eye.

I used to play around a lot with Jasc Animation Shop when I was like a Freshmen in high school. I don't know why I stopped but I spend so many countless hours on my computer that there's no reason why I shouldn't be an ANIMATION MASTAH.

I started drawing a crocodile but I think I subconsciously made Gojira. Iunno.

Lately I've been trying to figure out what art college to apply to. I don't think Academy of Art in San Fran is going to happen anytime soon. They offer no money to their students and I am in dire need of all the extra $$$ I can get. So after that kinda drastic change in my life (it was my dream school and all) I'm trying to find the most affordable art school with a emphasis on illustration.

Do any of my LJ friends know of some and would like to suggest? What schools are you folks looking at? I'm desperate. I'll go anywhere I can afford at this point. I just need to GO.

I talked to a rep at MCAD (Minneapolis Collge of Art and Design) and there was nothing but good vibrations. His name was Kermit so he's so cool OBV. It seems like just the school I'm looking for. A place where my ADD art can call home and grow. I previously met with him on Portfolio Day and he didn't even care that I didn't have ~*observational*~ drawlings and he gave me a fee waiver! I hate all that basic shit. I just want to punch through the fundamental walls and go for the creative jugular. And it's awesome that he saw right through my work!

I've never been to Minneapolis so I need to check out the scene there. But! Kermit digs me so much that he is going to talk to his director about paying for some of the travel costs to visit. Even if it doesn't happen--what a boost to the ego! They like me. They really like me.

I need to get the fuck outta Arizona. But to where?

So many thoughts filled my head tonight. It was nice to just mediate and listen to Radiohead soothe me while I pasteled. Man, I'm starting to love pastels. It's like painting with your fingers! Plus it's easy to erase!

I've been such an introvert lately. I haven't put on a nice outfit in dayssss. I kinda like it though. A couple of years ago, this would bother me to no end. I'd wonder why my so called "friends" never dialed my number or if they even thought about me. I'm pretty happy though. I've occupying myself with the goal to be productive like teach my puppy how to high five, plan an attack on VENTURE OUT TO SAN FRAN 09, finish art projects...annnnnnnd I've been kind of glued to my computer.

Lately I've been developing a fondness for horrific, bizarre and sometimes ultra violent art and anime. There's so many new things I've discovered from the

I've been out of the anime loop for so long. Watching what everyone raves about nowadays kept me at bay. But people on the net have opened my eyes to a whole new world of underground anime. It's beautiful and truly exciting.

I downloaded Wicked City last night and just watched the first five minutes and had to share this still with you guys.

Topless alien monster with a garder belt and a coochie with teeth. awwwwwww yeaaaaaah halloween costume '09.

WATCH THE TRAILER. omg I'm so pumped to finish it!
<lj-embed id="30" />

I'm also rewatching Akira and could go on and on about how fluid and gorgeous the animation is. Especially for 1988. Drool.

On this new craze of mine, I discovered new artists like Imiri Sakabashira.

More at
http://www.garandesign.com/day/test_imiri3.html

I need to go completely bat shit crazy on a piece and draw creatures from my imagination. Hello, new years resolution.

I also rediscovered manga artist, Shintaro Kago I had read one of his works before and was mindfucked totally.

Link to the first manga I read by him: http://pics.livejournal.com/kc_anathema/gallery/0007c99r

I watched this independent anime called Midori on crunchyroll.com It amazed me even more knowing that the creator of the film could not find a soul to fund the project so he devoted his whole life's savings on something he believed in and single handedly drew the anime by himself. I highly recommend watching it. But it's graphic and totally insane. So only if you're in that sort of odd mood like I am.

My next discovery--iscribble.net. I invite you all to draw and become insane with me.

Seriously.

This morning I had a dream that I attended a Barack Obama speech in a college like auditorium. I think I walked up to give him a high five or something and he like raised my arm in front of everyone like we just conquered something or I won a boxing fight. And everyone cheered I think, but I forgot to shave my pits so I was really hoping no one saw. WUT.

I finally uploaded some pictures from the Spraygraphics show. My art lovin' friends, you really ought to check the site out. They constantly present interviews with artists you need to see. A lot of it is very inspirational. Plus there's a whole community of artists like you and me across the globe. Make friends. Be inspired. It's pretty fun.

http://spraygraphic.com/Home.html

A ton of people showed up too!

Been experimenting with cardboard for my painting class. Here's the first of many.

I'm trying to get all my works done tonight. I seem to have a problem with the rules of time. I painted all day today. And I'm still not done. What the hell! WHERE IS THIS INVISIBLE VORTEX EATING UP ALL MY TIMEZ, MANG.

In other news,
I've watched this like 8 times now. I'm addicted.

<lj-embed id="28" />

Jorma is winning my heart. For those Lonely Island fans, they are set to drop an album I in Feb. Yes, please.

In other, other news: My Robin Williams concert tickets were in my mailbox.

Behold, my new favorite animal, THE SUN BEAR.

It's ready to hypnotize you with it's glory.

November 10th marked a day in which I got to preview my ideal future. My painting class had a small exhibition in the hallways leading to the auditorium. And I got feedback that made my soul happy with the approval. Here's a totally candid shot of me painting that day.

One of the art kids brought an acoustic guitar and bongos. He started playing the guitar and my professor walked up and jammed with him on the bongos. I completely adore my art professor. Here's a video of the magic (sorry 'bout the compressed quality, but you get the idea).

<lj-embed id="22" />

It was incredible to paint to that.

After a couple hours, the evening was nearing, which meant I had to get ready to perform. I entered myself in my college's *~talent show~*. Mostly because I wanted to prove to myself that I could do stand-up comedy. I had only performed to a small classroom with kids I had been with for a semester. I needed to know how I would do in an auditorium filled room. My brother came to see me. He recorded most of my act, only missing the opening jokes about my heritage.

Basically I shared with the crowd that I am half Chinese and half Mexican. So I was destined to own my own restaurant and do the dishes. Because really, the only time you see my people together is at a Panda Express. And let me set you up even further if you decide to watch: The joke that is caught midway in the beginning of the video is me saying that apparently I look more Asian...and click play for the zinger!

<lj-embed id="25" />

I make fun of a girl in this one.

<lj-embed id="26" />

Being on stage was such a high. I had the most intense feeling afterward. I made complete strangers laugh. And not just little giggles, but hardly laughs! Ah! Amazing.

We had to take a photo with all the performers (opening acts for me, obviously).

Along the road, I want all my days to be filled with art making and joke telling. I can't wait!

WHO ELSE NEEDS THIS IN THEIR LIFE??

Saying that outloud makes me feel so old. And while I realize it's hardly old, I can't help but feel it. I'm already finding myself asking the torturing question, "what am I doing with my life?"

I'm concerned about my future college. Will I be able to make it out there by myself? In a new area? Without my securities? How will I pay for a 20,000 tuition? Can I deal with independency? Will Academy of Art live up to my expectations?

Every success story starts out like, "...and then I moved and became a star". It can't be that hard. Everyone does it, right? I must be overthinking.

I attended Portfolio Day here in Arizona. I only got to see 4 reps in 4 hours. 2 didn't care for me and the other 2 dug me (one really liked me!) The two that didn't care seemed to have disregard for my work because I didn't bring the ~*figure*~ drawings or other black and white shadings of boxes of the sort. I can't fucking strain enough that I hate that fundamental shit. I thrive in my imagination and I don't believe true art in its purest form can stem from restrictions. This is mainly why I loathed my university's view on their art program and probably every university's art program. One of the reps I met with on Portfolio Day put it best that they expect you to learn art a certain way. I am strongly against the teaching of art in this manner. Where is the freedom? Where is the encouragement for creativity? This is what sets artists apart. If they are forced to learn the lighting of the box, sure it's going to be a fucking perfect replica of reality and sure they are going to learn how the light reflects on the four sides but how can they branch out from that? I feel that most young artists become stuck in making their given tasks an assignment, rather than an exploration. It's bullshit how some colleges are structured. And unfortunately, I don't believe this is only restricted to art colleges.

Does anyone share these same views?

Anyway, I just need to make sure I am in a college that appreciates my imagination and my rebellious views towards the typical view of modern art.

In other news, Adventure Time has been officially picked up by Cartoon Network. This is way exciting! I love this man!
<lj-embed id="20" />

Dude, Wayne Brady's album is pretty sweet. You know him, right? The incredibly witty black guy from Whose Line is it Anyway? Yeah. He does some classy covers of Sam Cooke and Stevie Wonder. Plus, "I Ain't Moving" sounding and it's one of his original songs.

Because of a silly youtube clip, I have finally seen Ricky-Oh: The Story of Ricky. You may have seen the infamous head smash as a .gif or image circulating around the web.

This movie has seriously everything you could ever want and never imagined in a gory action-packed, Asian movie. Here's a taste of the first of many scenes in which my friend and I laugh hysterically and yelled "OH!!!" at the T.V.

<lj-embed id="15" />

There is always some sort of Youtube trend I get into. From newscaster bloopers, to dubbed cartoons, or Japanese variety shows, to comedians dealing with hecklers and now it is terribly cheesy action/horror movies. My recent favorites:

<lj-embed id="16" />

<lj-embed id="17" />

First a sketch:

I really want to make a cartoon with these characters:

This is a result of one of many drawing games. My friend drew some lines on my paper and it was my challenge to make something out of it.

Last two pieces were for a themed show. My co-workers band Evan Brightly just released their debut album and they invited artists to show their umbrella or clock related pieces. They are a very talented band and I don't normally throw that around, especially to Arizona's local bands.

I can say that I smoked weed in a public area of my campus. I'm getting all to comfortable with my surroundings. Perhaps life in general. I need to shake things up more. I think my plans to move to San Francisco by myself and attend Academy of Art next school year is exactly what I need.

Oh my goodness and the new Kings of Leon song, "Sex on Fire" is my absolute favorite.
