To Wear White or Not to Wear White?

It's a question that's asked every year - is it okay to wear white after Labor Day!? Now that we are getting into the chilly winter months, I feel like it's even more important to tackle this tricky dilemma. We can't have Monkee's girls out of the fashion loop!

The jury has been out on this question for a long time, with some parties vehemently opposing white after Labor Day, and others tossing the rule book out the window. It's a bit of an outdated fashion rule, I'll admit, but really - white jeans when it's snowing just isn't right! Ultimately, it's your decision, but here are a few tips to keep your winter whites fashion-friendly.

1. Stay away from diamond white. Cream, off white, and other muted tones of this non-color are the best way to wear white after the summer season. Diamond white can be too harsh for fall and winter months, and without bronzed skin, can make a girl look washed out.

2. Wear white in a seasonally appropriate fabric. White or cream colored cable-knit sweaters are ideal! A cream colored cable knit sweater is my absolute go-to for fall. Paired with a vest or scarf, you look cozy and warm regardless of the white coloring. Heavy and textured fabrics are the best - cashmere, wool, twill and tweed. White linen pants are not practical, and you'd be freezing in Virginia!

3. Pair white with something extra-seasonal. Pair your white sweater with a thick scarf, or a vest and riding boots. Make sure the outfit as a whole feels like fall or winter - if you are wearing a white Lilly dress and sandals in the middle of November, you will most likely look out of place and will be uncomfortable.

Fall into Monkee's Fashion!

Hi friends! It’s been so long since we’ve blogged! The store has been busy, and we celebrated Catherine’s one-year, Monkee owner anniversary! Our Resort, Spring, and Summer was chaotic, but very fun! We helped find the perfect Easter dresses, found some new brands to carry in the store, and welcomed a few new fashion consultants to our lineup! You'll get to meet everyone in our "Meet the Monkee's post" - coming soon! We are back to blogging now, and with perfectly fashionable timing. We are excited for fall, and we can’t wait to see what y’all are doing with this crisp weather.

At the store, we are just dying over the equestrian-perfected look. It’s a mix of rugged and polished. Like you just got done riding through the wilderness, but have no trace of mud or wilderness on your outfit, of course. We love chunky sweaters, our new Barbour vests, and of course, a great riding boot. Outdoorsy and feminine is a match made in heaven, if you ask us!

Other things we love? Leopard! I can’t remember who, but somebody said “as far as I’m concerned, leopard is a neutral.” Amen, y’all! I personally love leopard mixed with other tans, browns, and blacks. But you could easily cross-print with stripes, or throw a pop of color in there. Leopard is bold, and it’s back!

There are so many other fabulous fall trends this year: leather details, faux fur vests, and the coveted spirit jersey, just to name a few! We are still fawning over glamorous jewelry and statement pieces, whether you’re rocking a bold pair of earrings or a well-stacked arm party, jewelry can really make an outfit.

In other news, some of our plans for the fall include pumpkin picking, celebrating Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg, and some pretty competitive collegiate football games! How to look hot when its cold!

Hi Monkee's Ladies! We've had some pretty chilly weather in Virginia, and we know there is lots more to come. A lot of women can feel disheartened when winter comes around; staying warm and staying cute can be a tough duo to master! With a few Monkee's tips, you'll have no problem fashionably frolicking in a winter wonderland!

Ideally, there are a few things your wardrobe needs for a winter makeover. You need a great pair of boots, a great winter coat, and lots of sweaters. Accessories are a fun and easy way to add warmth and style, also! Think mittens and gloves, scarves, thick socks for your boots, vests, there are so many ways to show your style - even when it snows!

Holy Moly! Monkee's of Fredericksburg has some fashion that won't leave you freezing in the snow!

A personal favorite in the coat department are these two beauties below- The Luii Ruffle Jacket (which comes in a myriad of fabulous colors) and Elizabeth McKay's Madison Avenue Coat. Both of these weather-friendly pieces belong in your closet! Such fun colors guarantee that you will stand out, and the great length will keep you warm!

Sweaters and scarves are two must-have items for the winter! A colorful scarf can spruce up any outfit; I personally love to go with an all-black outfit and pick a really fun scarf to stand out! Trendy sweaters are thick and cable-knit, loose-fititng, and always comfortable! Cardigans fit that same rule, too! Pair a plain cardigan with a pop of color, or a pattern!

Another fashion go-to for winter are BOOTS. The selection of boots at Monkee's is to die for- all the leather your heart could desire, suede detailing, and gorgeous shiny logos. Boots are probably the most important staple in a winter wardrobe, because they will be paired with many, many outfits!

Accessories can add another fun (and warm!) element to your wintery look. Vests are my personal favorite, but our selection of gloves (especially the Echo Touch Gloves - perfect for smart phone users!) are so colorful and fun, they give the vests a run for their money!

Re-Visiting the Arm Party

Hi y'all! In March we did our first Arm Party feature, but now that fall is upon us, it's time to update the Arm Party and bring some fabulous new items and season-appropriate additions. I'm sure everyone will just love the changes!

First up, we have a whole new batch of Michael Kors watches. Below are a few of my absolute favorites for the fall and winter seasons, and of course I am including my beloved rose gold.

I am just absolutely obsessed with the bracelet-style band. The gorgeous detailed chain links are a feminine and fun way to add something new to your pretty little wrist. The faux-snake thin band on the right one mixes edgy and feminine and is perfect for fall. My obsession is getting out of hand (pun intended!).

The sleek style of the watch on the left is absolutely perfect for my work day, and the embellished one on the right is perfect for my days off. It's only natural that I need both, right? As for the beauty in the middle: mixing metals AND adding navy?! It's a watch after my own heart. This watch is so unique, it's guaranteed to steal the show in any arm party.

Ugh, and gold. Gold has a soft spot in my heart, and these watches definitely have a place on my wrist. Once again, the bracelet-style band appears (I'm sorry, it's just so chic!), but mixing tortoise and gold gives it another dimensions of fabulous! The bracelet in the middle has a more classic feel than the bracelet-style, and the gold is more of a "champagne" gold, which I love.

With all the beautiful new watches, it's only natural to think "what's next for my arm party?!" Don't fret- this season is all about going a little bit thicker and a little bit bolder.

Swap out the old bangles for animals! Foxes, elephants and lions have all been seen on celeb's wrists. They give your wrist a little character and are a creative addition to any arm party.

Thin, stackable charm bangles have been very popular, but the trend right now is to go big, chunky, and attention-grabbing. Thick cuffs, large double knot bracelets, and anything chain-linked is a must have.

Put Some Pink in Your Wardrobe

Hi Monkee's girls! I hope October finds you cozy and happy, and filled with pumpkin spice flavored everything! This month is one of special importance for many women, because it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Approximately 1 in 8 women will develop some form of breast cancer in their lifetime, and the disease also affects men, too. It's important to get regular mammograms and self examinations to be sure you are your healthiest, happiest you!

In honor of the ever-so-important cause, Monkee's is advocating putting some pink pep in your step! I personally enjoy wearing pink for the entire month (as much as I can get away with at work, anyway!), and Monkee's has some great options to show your support for breast cancer awareness.

I personally ~~love~~ am obsessed with the color pink and think it looks great regardless of the season, especially if you pair it with a neutral. Navy and pink is a favorite color combo of mine!

Grand Re-Opening!

Monkee's girls, so much has happened over the past few months! We need to get y'all caught up and reminisce as we approach a very special event:

We hope you will join us this weekend for our Lilla P trunk show, tons of fun giveaways, a meet and greet with the owner, and see the fresh new look of Monkee's! Make sure to stop by Saturday from 4-7pm for refreshments, as well!

In July, our favorite Catherine Sullivan had the opportunity to purchase Monkee's of Fredericksburg. Excited was an understatement, to say the least! After working with Monkee's since the beginning in 2008, her hard work and dedication finally paid off and the store would be hers. Love and support poured in (along with many beautiful flowers, squeals of "congratulations!" and too many hugs to count!), and the papers were signed!

Catherine Sullivan: Monkee's Owner, just sounds so fabulous ♥

Unfortunately, the bliss was put on pause August 18th when we walked in to open the store. We were greeted by water everywhere. There had been a massive roof leak which caused major structural damage; roof panels were on the floor, water covered the computers and desks, it was a horrible sight. Thankfully the merchandise was saved. Once again, the outpouring of love and support was overwhelming, and Monkee's thanks everybody for their continued well wishes - what an adventure!

We are all so excited for her ownership-- nobody has worked harder than Catherine, and nobody deserves this opportunity more than she does. We can't wait to see what great things happen at Monkee's of Fredericksburg under her ownership!

A Fashionista's Favorite Season

It’s finally here! The season every Monkee’s girl can’t wait for- it’s Autumn! Now don’t get me wrong; we love all the seasons equally. But it seems as though we love Fall just a little more. It’s the start of a whole new wardrobe, and who doesn’t need a new wardrobe? Out with the sundresses and flip flops, in with the cozy sweaters and boots (oh, I just love boots!)

It’s time for pumpkin everything (lattes, candles, pies…) and cute game-day outfits, gorgeous warm colors, and crisp evenings to show off a stunning new coat. Oversized sweaters and fall foliage are beautiful sights, and cozying up next to a fire is the perfect way to end an evening. *sigh* There’s just nothing better than the start of Fall! Just imagine yourself playing in leaves, picking pumpkins, and sipping apple cider, eek! ♥

Monkee’s of Fredericksburg is on top of the trending Fall fashions! If you need booties, suede or cap-toe wedges or flats (have you seen the Tory Burch ones?!), riding boots, amazing overcoats, comfy sweaters, the best fitting jeans, anything - Monkee’s has it.

What's in Your Bag!?

After seeing an adorbs Kate Spade ad asking "What's in Your Bag?" Monkee's girls decided to have our own edition! I asked everybody randomly at work to grab their purses; you'll find some silly and surprising things in our bags here at the store!

I'll start with myself! I use my Tory Burch Robinson East-West tote to carry my entire life! And the color makes it perfect for every day use. On this particular day, I had my Tory sunnies (complete with Lilly Pulitzer croakies!), my iPad, my Michael Kors clutch that acts as my wallet, and lots of little trinkets like mascara, hair clips and ties, and emergency gum! On any other day you can also find extra clothes, notebooks, and enough hair products to run a mini-salon!

Griffin has the cutest Kate Spade bowling-esque structured bag, and though it is smaller, it fits a lot of things! She had her keys (with monogram keychain, of course!), matching Kate Spade wallet, and Tory sunglasses! Not pictured: Her small black umbrella that also fits! Talk about space management, Griffin has it down!

Next up is Catherine! Her huge navy Tory Burch canvas tote carries her smaller Kate Spade crossbody (a bag inside a bag!). She carries the essentials for any Monkee's manager- her business cards and Monkee's pens, notebook and iPad, and a snack when she's on the go! She also has her Tory Burch sunglasses, a hairbrush, hair ties and lip gloss! Catherine is prepared for anything and everything!

Melanie had just gotten back from a trip to San Fransisco, so we caught her at a time when her bag was packed! She's got the gorgeous Kate Spade tote in a fun pink color. Her Lilly Pulitzer on-the-go iPhone charger, her Tory Burch wallet and coin purse, a pair of comfy flip flops for traveling, her keys and a snack were all packed! Not pictured was her small Burberry umbrella and G.E.T Anorak jacket for rainy days!

Maureen's bag is filled with essentials for Monkee's girls! Her large navy Kate Spade tote (matching with Melanie!) holds her RayBan sunglasses, Tory Burch wallet, extra earrings (you never know when you'll need to change them out), a Miss Oops rescue sponge and tide pen (absolute life savers), floss, monogrammed tissues, and her phone!

Blushing Pink!

As a finale for our fabulous Color Week, I'll wrap this up with another personal favorite- PINK! I mean truly, what girl doesn't love a little pink in their lives (or if you're anything like me- a lot of pink....)?!

It's been said that you are just as hot as the pink you wear! ♥

I am a Lilly Pulitzer fiend, so anything pink I can get my hands on usually comes to my closet... It's just so fun! All the different shades of pink can portray girlishness or femininity, or boldness and fierceness! Choose your mood, then choose your pink!

Passion for Purple

Monkee's of Fredericksburg continues of COLOR CRUSH week with the fabulous pretty purple. I personally believe that purple looks gorg on everybody, and I mean everybody. After all- I went to a University whose colors were purple and gold... I'm biased, but seriously purple is an all around fave of mine.

Put a freckly girl like myself in purple and all of a sudden I'm looking more tan, my hair looks more colorful and full, and I'm brimming with confidence. Put a fair skinned beauty like Catherine in purple and she just glows! I mean truly, her skin looks flawless and her hair looks bright and she just looks like she came out of a picture book!

Monkee's is loving this color, and we have lots to choose from at the store! Purple is dazzling us all- come in and see how it can change your life (or at least your mood!) ♥

Orange Crush!

While I might not be totally sold on the idea that orange is the new pink, I am so excited about this new citrusy color crave! Oranges look amazing on tan skin- and summer is the perfect time to try it out! The different shades of orange are visible on all our celeb icons, as you can see, there are so many shades of this fab color!

Cool Blues!

Just because you are BLUE doesn't mean you need to feel sad! Cool blue tones are everywhere recently, and how could anyone complain? Blues are great for all skin tones, and remind us of the ocean; keep your blues are fresh and bright to get a cheerful, fashionable look.

Whether you are a cool or warm skin tone, you can pull off the blue hue! Aquatic and Caribbean blues look amazing on fair skin and blue/green eyes, but royal and peacock blues accent olive and darker skin tones perfectly. There are so many ways to wear this ocean-esque trend; go with jewelry, bags, tops, dresses, shoes- the possibilities are endless.

Jessica Chastain has one of my favorite blues on! And as a fair-skinned redhead, she is proof that blues can look fabulous on everyone!

Wearing White, Done Right!

White jeans simply need to be a staple in every Monkee's girl wardrobe. Particularly for Spring and Summer, white jeans are crisp, clean, and effortlessly chic. Lucky for y'all, white jeans come in nearly every size and style! Skinnies, cropped, bootcut - your fave style most likely comes in white!

Wearing a white jean, or pant (if you're in the office!) is a simple way to make a fresh appearance. The key for Spring and Summer is to go bold elsewhere in your outfit. Pair your white jeans with a colorful peplum top or a fun blazer or cardigan. Bright flats and bags add pops of color, or mix it up with some jewelery!

I personally would advise to stick with a color scheme and keep one or two pieces as neutrals - just because you are wearing white jeans does not mean you should look like Rainbow Bright!

Neutrals look great with white pants also! Navy (which I def consider a neutral!) stripes look classy and fabulous for a warm day, or a casual gray top would dress down your outfit.

Tip: Avoid fabrics that are too thin or wearing white jeans too tight, which could lead to a major fashion faux pas.

Spotlight On: Lilly Pulitzer ♥

Native New Yorker Lillian McKim decided at age 21 to elope with her love Peter Pulitzer. They escaped the hustle and bustle of the city and moved to the sun and sand of Palm Beach, Florida. The citrus groves Peter owned proved ideal for juice stands, and the rest, they say, is history!

Lilly opened her juice stand, but seeing how quickly the stains got on her clothing, she decided to make bright and colorful dresses to disguise the spills. So the clothing line was created, and soon she was selling more of her dresses than her juice! Her classic shift dress became extremely popular with socialites, but in 1962 when her long time friend Jackie Kennedy was photographed in a Lilly, "they took off like zingo!"

In 1984 Lilly had decided to close down her clothing company, but so many people were still craving the colorful palettes that it didn't last for long! In 1993 Sugartown Worldwide contacted Lilly about reopening the brand, because women and girls everywhere just loved the brand so much. Lilly agreed, and while she was not involved in day-to-day administrative tasks, she became a creative consultant for the brand.

Today, Lilly is regarded everywhere as a timeless and classic fashionable line. Lilly lovers everywhere don beautiful silhouettes with bold prints and bright colors. Though our beloved icon just recently passed away, we will continue to honor her vivcaious legacy and her motto, "Life is a party, dress like it!" ♥

Well, Monkee's girls, it's everyone's favorite time again-- Beach time! Here comes the beautiful weather, fruity drinks, and the feel of the sand between your toes. Whether you prefer Duck, Hilton Head, or somewhere more tropical (the Caribbean, perhaps?), there are some items you simply must take with you on your beach vacay ♥

Little Black Dress, No More

Spring is a time of events: Easter (Sunday, March 31st!), the National Cherry Blossom Festival, Foxfields (Saturday, April 27th!), bridal showers, baby showers, weddings, birthday parties, graduations,... I'm sure many agendas are overflowing with social invitations and soirees.

With such an amazing array of Spring dresses, it begs the question:

Why should the Little Black Dress get all the attention?

There are so many creative designers and fabulous prints out there, so many soft and smooth fabrics and styles and shapes, it would be shame to not wear them all!

I say give the LBD the boot, and bring on the bright colors!

I'm a southerner at heart, and for me, nothing says color like Lilly. These dresses below are flirty and feminine, a combination any Monkee's girl can appreciate. Here are my top 3 picks!

1. The Sandrine Dress in Shorley Blue Tossing the Line. It's all in the details: the high neckline and pearl accents on the corset-esque piping. It's slimming, and the print is to die for.

2. The Lowe Dress in Fiesta Pink Pretty Gingham: an iconic Spring dress. Pink gingham print, strapless, and a peplum detail, what's not to love?

3. The Lacina Dress in Resort White Nibbles. The crochet detail is sure to make a statement at any social event and this shift-style dress is a classic Lilly style.

Update Your Green!

I'm not sure about y'all, but green is a color that typically makes me nervous.

Do I look okay in green?

Is it too bold?

Which green is the appropriate color for not looking like a leprechaun?

How in the world am I going to style an outfit with my green (insert clothing item here)?

Thankfully there is a flattering new way to wear the luckiest color of the rainbow:

These softer hues of green are the colors of the Spring, and with good reason: they look amazing on everyone! There are a multitude of muted greens out there, and I'm convinced that anybody can rock this trend like they own it.

This "Kelsey Cape" by Tyler Boe combines a few of my favorite things: stripes, capes, and cotton! The single navy stripe creates a pop of unexpected color and gives the top a little edginess. Think gorgeous Spring days and this top fits right in.

Two of my favorite pieces in Monkee's of Fredericksburg are the the Lilla P Long Sleeved Cutout Blazer and the C. Luce Floral Lace Dress, pictured above. The preppy blazer can be dressed up (for the office) or dressed down (with the perfect pair of jeans), a single button cinches at the waist and creates a very flattering silhouette.

As for the floral lace dress- do I even have to say anything? It is completely adorable.

One of the most popular and fun trends that Monkee's girls are sporting is affectionately called an "arm party." 3. Add a pop of color, if your situation calls for it! It's always fun to go with a color scheme. Think black and white, or all silver with a pop of hot pink!

4. If you are afraid of being the noisiest girl around, separate your metals with rope or woven bracelets. For an office setting, it would be ideal to stick with just two or three pieces.
