There are search engines that don’t use spiders and crawler bots to index your site and rank your business in results according to relevance. MSN’s search engine for example uses a pay system in where it ranks a particular site. It is based on giving higher spots to the sites that pay them over the ones that just appear in the directories that list every site registered out there. Other search engines like Yahoo for example aren’t as strict when it comes to filtering out the sites that use some of the Black Hat SEO practices; therefore it dilutes the quality of results.

Now I am in no way affiliated with or receive any compensation for recommending Google as one of the more reliable search engines to use and or primarily consider when applying SEO solutions. In my opinion and after researching about this subject along with the opinions and experiences I’ve read from others in the field is that Google is one of the most advanced out there. When it comes to providing accurate and quality results they have put considerable effort into doing this. They are one of the biggest search engines out there because of this and if you use Google’s model in scripting your SEO solution you can be pretty sure that you are also appeasing the rest of the search engines out there as well and this is why I seem to mention them all the time.

This is not to say that they are infallible on the contrary there are improvements they could make to be better at what they do, but they are the best we have at the moment in my opinion. And because they are so well known and popular to the point of where people not computer literate have heard of them and that their name is referred to when describing the act of searching on the Internet is why I seem to always mention them and why I use their model in providing information about good SEO.

Another way earlier dodgy sites operated and exploited the value external links had in ranking results was to become a link farm. Link farming is where the site itself has almost nothing and in some cases literally nothing in it except lots of links to other sites and these sites also contain little except more links. These links get crisscrossed back and forth and all over the place having the effect of increasing their position nearer the top of a set of results, not all of the links just connect to more links some of them actually go to a site that is selling something this is the pay off for them. The reason I mentioned them specifically and why I haven’t mentioned them all is because you need to use the reasoning behind those techniques when applying SEO in a good way for your site. Except in the case of using irrelevant keywords to get your site seen no matter what the other Black Hat practices I mentioned can be used in a White Hat way.

I will start off with a bit of a background look into some of the practices used in the past that resulted in why we are where we are today. I’m adding this info so you can better apply good SEO practices and not inadvertently use Black Hat SEO tactics. This will help you to choose and implement effective SEO solutions to your website(s) without accidently stepping over what is already a pretty fine line to begin with.

There are a number of search engines out there that use an algorithm to evaluate how high a site will rank in a set of results due to how relevant they compare with the search terms the searching user types into the search box. This algorithm was designed to help return more accurate and relevant results to the user instead of how it used to be when the more unscrupulous web designers caught on to the fact that if they stuffed as many keywords as they could think of into a site that they would have a greater chance of being at the top of a list of results. This practice of keyword stuffing and the use of stuffing irrelevant yet popular keywords ended up making it in some cases near impossible to get accurate results from search engines.

The more detrimental of these two practices that I ever experienced was the tactic of adding as many commonly used search keywords as possible in the description of a site. Whether relevant to the site or not and especially not like having words like sex, video, and music, etcetera in a sites description when the site itself had absolutely nothing to do with those subjects at all. How many times in the past have you used the word “free” in a search only to find that there’s nothing even remotely free at all on offer?
