Team L3 is in festive Olympic spirits this month as we receive news and updates about Caribbean athletes competing at the world’s highest level of competition. We are pleased to bring our readers some of the best photos that capture the essence and the feel of the Olympics prior to the closing ceremony on Sunday August 12th, 2012.

Tricia ‘Sparks’ Spence interviews No Maddz, a band from Jamaica, who is a shining success for the world to see and hear. The group has been together for years, has played and performed in multiple cities, and is one of the few to say they are endorsed by major corporations. Heike Dempster covered Jamaica’s premiere Reggae Festival, Sumfest, 2012. This past weekend Montreal celebrated the 9th Edition of the "Montreal International Reggae Festival" with special guest Cham, Christopher Martin, Romain Virgo, Tarrus Riley, Jimmy Cliff and many more.

Reggae and Dancehall artists rocked the stage starting off Friday night with Superstar Cham and ending the festivities with Legend Jimmy Cliff.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: INDIE-ROOTZ RECORDS

Indie Rootz Records is founded and based in Montreal, Québec. Consisting of Producer Garnett “Bobby” Pottinger & co-Producer Brian Kotler in association with Miss Reeva Ann Proctor of YuhSeeYou Entertainment. Barely one year old and is already reaching out to the world.

Specializing in Roots/Reggae & Rock fused riddims (Beats), it was a real departure for us to create this Dancehall Reggae & Progressive Rock” fused riddim. In tribute to an old classic Supertramp song called “Lady”. We then decided that we would only ask “Ladies” to voice on it. Finally the riddim landed the name “LadyLike” and then we went on to create an all-female artist compilation album.

The Ladylike Compilation Album is to be released August 6th, 2012 coinciding with Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary. The album features some of the most talented gospel, dancehall, R&B and reggae artists. Both rising stars and veteran artists from Canada& around the world, truly an international project! All songs focus on spiritual, positive vibes as well as the enjoyable things of life.

We will be donating part of our proceeds made from the album sales (including from iTunes) to the Rotary Club of St. Andrew North (Jamaica) for the “City ofRefuge” children's home & basic school for homeless children, located in Content Gap, St. Andrew. Our goal: to help better provide improved rain water harvesting system, including water storage tanks and automated water treatment facility.

This whole project was a very special experience for all of us. We never dreamed that it would go so far and be so blessed. We must thank all the artists who believed in us and did such amazing and beautiful tracks. BUJU BANTON REQUEST FOR NEW TRIAL DENIED

Reggae super star Buju Banton is now facing the prospect of having his 10-year prison sentence extended to 15 after a Federal judge yesterday rejected his request for a new trial.

Federal Judge James Moody yesterday denied Buju's request for a new trial and argued that there was no need for one in light of an Atlanta Appeal Court's ruling that there was sufficient evidence to convict the reggae star on a gun charge.

Buju is now to appear in court for a new sentencing hearing when he faces the prospect of an additional five years.

But yesterday, his lawyer, David Oscar Markus, told The Gleaner the fight is not yet over.

"I plan on appealing again and will take this to the Supreme Court if I must," said Markus.

I-OCTANE HOSPITALIZED

Reggae superstar I-Octane was hospitalized following an asthma attack.

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall/Reggae superstar, I-Octane is recuperating in a Kingston-based hospital after falling ill last week.

A member of I-Octane’s team revealed on Monday that the prominent singjay suffered an asthma attack on Thursday night. According to reports, he was taken to hospital where he’s currently being treated by his physician.

Doctors expect I-Octane to make a full recovery from this attack but have advised him to rest until further reassessments are made.

Given his current health situation, I-Octane will be unable to honor some of his upcoming commitments but hopes to recover as soon as possible so that he can perform for his fans once more.

I-Octane last performed on Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest 2012 in which he gave a typically rousing set.

USAIN BOLT MOBBED BY FELLOW ATHLETES

Usain Bolt is being mobbed by excited Olympians asking for autographs and photographs.

LONDON, England — Global sprinting star Usain Bolt is now being protected by four teammates on the Jamaican track and field squad at the Olympic Games here as he is being mobbed by athletes from other countries.

Such is Bolt's popularity that ever since arriving in the Athletes' Village on Thursday, the double world record holder in the 100m and 200m events has had difficulty moving about in public.

However, according to team manager Ludlow 'Luddy' Watts, who described Bolt as "the star of the entire Games", there are no immediate plans to move Bolt to a more private area.

"No, he is safe here and he does not mind, so we have no plans to move him," Watts told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

The four teammates — discus thrower Jason Morgan, shot putter Dorian Scott, 400m hurdler Leford Green and decathlete Maurice Smith — have had to be performing bodyguard duties for Bolt, and according to Morgan, the de facto security chief, "The (team) management says they are happy to have us here."

Bolt was seen on television monitors taking photographs with fellow Olympians and signing autographs on the infield during the parade of teams at the Opening Ceremony.

The Sunday Observer later learnt that he had to be escorted by his teammates through a throng of athletes to get back to the Athletes' Village at the end of the ceremony on Friday night.

Watts said athletes from the team directly in front and behind the Jamaican delegation in the parade — Italy and Japan, respectively — started asking for photo ops and autographs almost as soon as they got off the track. He added that security personnel and volunteers were also a part of the frenzy.

Bolt was not the only big-name athlete in the ceremony as the American basketball team with superstars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James as well as several high-profile tennis players and swimmers were also there.

Watts told the Sunday Observer that when the Jamaican team was about to leave the village for the main stadium, which is in walking distance, a number of athletes descended on Bolt, "as if they were waiting for him to come out".

Bolt, who trained in seclusion in Birmingham before coming to London on Thursday with his track and field team members, appeared at a Jamaica Olympic Association/Puma press conference later that day and said he has not had the chance to see much of the Athletes' Village — "just the dining room" — but chances are he won't get to see much, given the demand on his time by other athletes.

SNOOP DOGG RENAMES HIMSELF "SNOOP LION"

Rapper Snoop Dogg has found a new calling Reggae Music.The Hip Hop Veteran has changed his name to "Snoop Lion" ".

Snoop Dogg has been around just as long as anyone can remember, but he isn't around anymore. As of July 31, 2012, he will no longer be known as Snoop Dogg and has been renamed Snoop Lion. He also states that after a recent trip to Jamaica, he has embraced reggae and is actually Bob Marley reincarnated.

During a press conference in New York on Monday, July 30, 2012, Snoop spoke on being "born again" during his February trip to Jamaica, and he now wants to make music that everyone can listen to including "kids and grandparents."

Perhaps the biggest thing though, is the change of his name.

"I didn't know that until I went to the temple, where the High Priest asked me what my name was, and I said, 'Snoop Dogg.' And he looked me in my eyes and said, 'No more. You are the light; you are the lion.' From that moment on, it's like I had started to understand why I was there," he explained at the press conference."

Snoop was born Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr., but has always been known as Snoop Dogg while in the music industry. Changing his name to Snoop Lion came with the epiphany and the whole idea and dream of changing his style of music. He says he is simply tired of rap.

"I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated," Lion said. "I feel I have always been a Rastafari. I just didn't have my third eye open, but it's wide open right now."

His first single will be titled "La La La," and Snoop Lion knows that he has come a long way in the music industry and that the reggae sound will be brand new for him. He's simply hoping that not only will new listeners like it, but that his current listeners appreciate it too.

BUSY SIGNAL PLEADS GUILTY

Dancehall star Glendale "Busy Signal" Gordon plead guilty to failure to appear in court.

Busy Signal, a popular Jamaican DJ, who admitted he left the United States 10 years ago before his scheduled trial on drug charges, pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of failure to appear in court.

Busy, whose real name is Glendale Goshia Gordon, could face between 12 to 18 months in prison and a fine of $3,000 to $30,000 under sentencing guideline recommendations.

His attorney, Bill Mauzy, told The Associated Press he'd ask for a sentence of time served. Assistant US Attorney Andrew Dunne declined to say how much time prosecutors would seek. A sentencing date has not been set.

Gordon, 33, was charged in February 2002 with two counts related to cocaine trafficking, which carried a sentence of at least 15 years in prison. He fled the US before his trial was to begin in Minnesota and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He has been a fugitive for the past decade.

"You knew you should appear, and you didn't," US District judge Donovan Frank said while asking Gordon a series of questions yesterday.

"Yes, Your Honour," Gordon replied.

Gordon was detained by authorities in London in May and accused of travelling with false documents, including a passport that listed a different name. He returned to Kingston, Jamaica, and was arrested at the airport.

Waived extradition

Gordon waived his right to an extradition hearing on the charge of failure to appear in court. Mauzy said the extradition process was limited to that count alone.

Because of that, Dunne said, while the cocaine charges still exist, they were not a part of this process. The United States doesn't have jurisdiction to prosecute Gordon on those counts at this time.

Frank said once Gordon serves his sentence, he'll be given 45 days to return to Jamaica. If he remains in the US after that, he could be arrested on the drug charges.

Busy Signal is best known for dancehall tracks Step Out and These Are the Days.

According to a recent AP review, his latest album, Reggae Music Again, is a contrast from his reputation as a hardcore dancehall DJ and pays homage to his Jamaican roots with songs of love, hope and liberation.

COMMUNITY EVENT: MONNAIE MONEY "VIDEO CONTEST"

The Carrefour jeunesse-emploi de Côte-des-Neiges and the Jamaican Canadian Community Women’s League of Montreal Inc. proudly presents the Monnaie-Money Financial Literacy Video Contest.

Participants will be invited individually or as a team to submit a video on the theme of financial literacy. The video must be at least 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes. The concept must be clear and represent a situation in regards to financial literacy and personal finance. Participants will have the freedom to choose their own style. It can be comedy, satirical or very serious. Originality will be one of the criteria that will be judged upon. The youth participating must be between 12 and 35 years old and must be residents of Quebec.

Prizes offered will include an I Pad 3 and a cash prize, Laptop computer, video camera, digital camera and gift cards. The contest will end on October 26, 2012. Winners will be announced on November 14, 2012 during Financial Literacy Month.

JUNIOR KELLY TOPS THE CHARTS WITH HIT SINGLE "BEEN THERE".

Junior Kelly scores # 1 with the hit single “Been There” After 15 weeks on the Jamaica Music Countdown Top 25 Reggae Singles Chart, singer Junior Kelly has convincingly captured the number one slot with the gripping, reality-laced single, “Been There”.

Chart-watchers had early predicted that “Been There” would have enjoyed exciting chart success, noting that there was a strong possibility of it taking over the pole position. Well, it’s ‘Mission Accomplished’. They are now eyeing the song’s progress on the long-running New York Reggae Singles Chart, where it now sits in the number 6 spot and is steadily making upward movements. Kelly has also dominated the popular Stampede Street Chart, where he has been singled out as ‘Artiste of the Week’.

On the Broadleaf riddim, produced by Big Bomb Entertainment, “Been There” adds to Junior Kelly’s list of songs which have impacted in a huge way. Among them are the “Sunshine,” “Boom Draw”, “Hungry Days,” Missing You (with Bar-bee)”, “Receive” and the blockbuster, breakout single, “Love So Nice”, which spent a record 15 weeks at number one.

The single, which was driven by the music video, is currently getting good rotation across the globe and Kelly himself has been busy on the promotional trail, ensuring that “Been There” forms part of his live set.

His performance in Brooklyn at the Rose Garden on July 8 was so powerful that he was immediately booked for a second show to be held at the Village, NY on Sunday, July 22. Kelly gave a masterful performance at the Bayfront Reggae Festival, Minnesota, last Saturday, alongside Jamaican artistes Ce’cile, Anthony B and Gramps Morgan.

Fans will be treated to another side of Junior Kelly on Sunday, July 29, at Weaver High School, Hartford Connecticut. He will be participating in the annual Celebrity Soccer Games, an event which he is quite enthusiastic about.

Junior Kelly has been in the business of making uplifting and empowering reggae music for more than 25 years. Montreal came out to Jean Drapeau Parc to celebrate Jamaica day. Presented by the Jamaican Association of Montreal, this year celebration included special invited guest Reggae artist Eric Donaldson.

The family event was filled with performances by Montreal artist Sampaloo, Mikey Dangerous, Ijah Iba and many more. The outdoor festival is part of the Les Week-Ends Du Monde presented by Loto-Québec.

On Saturday, Montreal celebrated the 37th annual Carifiesta parade presented by the Caribbean Cultural Festivities Association. Hosted by Global correspondent Zeeta Maharaj, the parade began at the corner of Guy and René-Levesque Boulevard and ended at Phillips Square.

The Sounds and smells of the Caribbean filled the air as masqueraders wine their waist along the parade route to glee of the crowd of 20000.

Among the highlights of the parade was the introduction of Miss Teen Carnival, the bands Montreal Carnival Vibrations, Banzawa, Roots Cultural Association, Guyanese Association, Carnival Freaks Mas Band and many more.

Founded in 1975,Carifiesta is North America's second greatest Caribbean carnival of importance in Canada.

Floats played the latest Soca/Reggae and some special guest came to town soak up the fun we see you Mr.Traffik Man "Eddie Charles".

Carifiesta 2012 was a wonderful celebration and a fun way to kick off the Summer, till next year.

Reggae singer Tarrus Riley has released his latest video for his record "Dream Woman".Produced by Jordan McClure and directed by Rik Cordero it was shot in New York City. Tarrus Riley will be in town from August 17-19 for 9th annual Montreal International Reggae Festival.

Reggae artiste Tarrus Riley will be among several performers scheduled for the 9th annual Montreal International Reggae Festival from August 17-19 in Montreal, Canada. It is Riley's first time on a major festival in Montreal and he says he is looking forward to thrilling the fans. "I feel good about being in the lineup.

This is my first time performing in Montreal in three years and I am looking forward to going there and represent," Riley said in a release. Jimmy Cliff, Assassin, Cham, Popcaan, Christopher Martin, Konshens, and Khago are also on the festival's roster. Riley is scheduled to perform on August 19, the festival's final day. Riley was invited to the launch of the festival on June 21 at the EB Club Lounge in Montreal.

While in Montreal, he completed a series of interviews. Publicist for the festival Janice Dayle said Riley was invited to participate in the launch because of his overwhelming popularity in Montreal. "Tarrus is one of the artistes recognised right across the board, hence the reason why we invited him to the launch and to be on the festival", said Dayle. Dayle pointed out that the festival has been embraced by Caribbean nationals and Canadians alike. "The Caribbean community has embraced the festival in a huge way. It is the biggest reggae festival in Montreal", she explained. According to Dayle, the festival attracts between 5,000 to 8,000 patrons each year.

1)What separates Carifiesta from the other parades?

The Carifiesta Parade is a way and the only way to celebrate our Caribbean Background and culture here in North America Carifiesta Celebrates unity of many Caribbean Island "Many Island one people" as I like to label it .

2) In comparison to two years ago to now, what is the feeling you’re getting specifically for Carifiesta?

Two years ago there was no Carifiesta Parade and that was a Huge downfall that leads up to now in 2012 why the organizers are suffering to push it "Back to Life". I can say this year the excitement is there more than last year, but we need the community to get involve by supporting the only Caribbean parade that we have here in Montreal,Quebec. As the old saying goes "Its takes a whole village to raise a child" well its the same for the Carifiesta event its takes the Community to put it back to life.

3) What do you think of the of the music scene in Soca/Reggae scene 2012? What’s your favorite tune this season?
I love this question reason being this year I have seen the Caribbean Music scene growing rapidly both Soca & Reggae, they have went on a world wide urban stream. But most amazingly this year Soca went to the next level of sound like Urban House Music with the Soca/Calypso flavor which is call "ISLAND POP" ... I love it! My favorite song on the reggae side for this year will be Cheaters Paradise by Christopher Martin" and in Soca its Bottle Of Rum by Machel Mantan which is my songs I listen to every morning as I wake up LOL.

4) What are you looking forward to this Carifiesta?

Oh my what a question, there are so many things I'm looking forward to, but I am more excited to see how sexy my mas band "Carnival Freaks Mas Band" will look on the road.That's the only thing that's on my mind for this year.

5) Have you been played mas or are you feting in the street?

Well both and at the same time working, as you may know I am a Band leader now this year marked the 2nd year of putting a parade truck on the road for Carifiesta by the name of "Carnival Freaks Mas Band".

6) As a Children of West Indian parents raised in North America how important is to hold unto the Carnival culture?

Another Great & Amazing question, YES! I strongly believe with an event like Carnival/Carifiesta to me its like a day that we remember of our Caribbean History. I have known people who have been born here in North America and just cant wait till Carnival day to embrace their mother land with a flag of the country. But today I have seen it getting worse & worse everyday cause kids/teenagers today with a Caribbean back ground listen more to Hip Hop than soca or Calypso even steel pan and that's a huge loss. The parents are to blame for that because I remember growing up in the Caribbean but even when I came here to Montreal in 1998 my mom and the family will still play Soca & Calypso in the house. They would take my sister and I to community events so for me I'm grateful for that cause I believe if it was not for that maybe just maybe Hip Hop would have grab my mind too. But I have been very open minded from I was a little boy and thats why music and entertainment were always my joy.

7) What are you working on next?

Well For the Carnival Season I'm focusing on "Carnival Freaks" cause after Montreal is done people can still come register with us. We've also team up with a Toronto band by the name of "Black Sage Carnival Mas Band" so we will play in Toronto for Caribana on Saturday August 4th.
