On Thursday, Wordpress.org released Wordpress 2.8.1 for bloggers who enjoy hosting their own blogs.

As for blogging platforms, you simply can’t beat Wordpress. It’s free and search engines absolutely love it.

WordPress 2.8.1 fixes several known bugs and enhances security for plugin administration pages. What else is new in Wordpress 2.8.1?

Certain themes were calling get_categories() in such a way that it would fail in 2.8. 2.8.1 works around this so these themes won’t have to change.
Dashboard memory usage is reduced. Some people were running out of memory when loading the dashboard, resulting in an incomplete page.
The automatic upgrade no longer accidentally deletes files when cleaning up from a failed upgrade.
A problem where the rich text editor wasn’t being loaded due to compression issues has been worked around.
Extra security has been put in place to better protect you from plugins that do not do explicit permission checks.
Translation of role names fixed.
wp_page_menu() defaults to sorting by the user specified menu order rather than the page title.
Upload error messages are now correctly reported.
Autosave error experienced by some IE users is fixed.
Styling glitch in the plugin editor fixed.
SSH2 filesystem requirements updated.
Switched back to curl as the default transport.
Updated the translation library to avoid a problem with mbstring.func_overload.
Stricter inline style sanitization.
Stricter menu security.
Disabled code highlighting due to browser incompatibilities.
RTL layout fixes.

The Nashville Police Department has just released the audio from the Steve McNair 911 call. McNair’s friend Robert Gaddy placed the call reporting the deaths of the former NFL quarterback and Sahel Kazemi, the woman police say shot and killed Steve McNair before committing suicide.

In the audio from the call (below), a shocked Gaddy is confused and disoriented as he tries to explain to the dispatcher that he discovered the two bodies. Police said that Gaddy actually called 911 and then hung up. The recording begins when the dispatcher called Robert Gaddy back.

“I hate to be the one to make this call,” Gaddy says. “It’s so messed up.”

McNair’s friend Wayne Neely was the first to find his and Kazemi’s bodies, and he then called Gaddy, who went to the apartment and made the Steve McNair 911 call. Gaddy was a college teammate of McNair’s at Alcorn State.

Beyonce Knowles‘ music video for “Sweet Dreams” has hit the web a day sooner than on MTV. The video was directed by Adria Petty. It begins with Beyonce having a restless night of sleep and goes on to feature a dance sequence at sunrise.

“Sweet Dreams” is the sixth single from Beyonce’s studio album “I Am…Sasha Fierce“. Some of the videos from this album were included in CD/DVD collection “Above and Beyoncé: Video Collection & Dance Mixes” but “Sweet Dreams” wasn’t finished in time to be included in the set. There is, however, a behind-the-scenes feature of the video included in the B-roll footage.

More DC Metro Fail: Operator Sleeping on the Job (Video)

The DC Metro system is having quite a bad day today. Not only did we uncover a video earlier today of an operator texting on the job, we’ve now uncovered video of an operator sleeping on the job. Yes, we said sleeping…caught on tape.

In the latest Metro fail, a 14-year-old boy captured video of an Metro operator seemingly dozing off while the train is running between College Park and Greenbelt.

The videographer, Gregory Thomas, said that the took place on June 18 and he sent the video to Metro on June 23, the day after the worst accident in Metro history.

“At first he’s dozing off then, he’s not in a full sleep,” Thomas told Fox. “I see him start to doze off and his head going limp.”

UPDATE: It gets better. There is now video circulating of a Metro operator sleeping on the job as well.

This is not the kind of P.R. the Washington DC Metro would wants right now.

A video has surfaced on YouTube showing a DC Metro train operator text messaging while operating a train. This is clearly a violation of policy. The timing is uncanny considering the terrible accident that occurred on the Metro back in June. Texting wasn’t mentioned as the cause of that accident, but a 2008 crash in L.A. involved the train operator text messaging just seconds prior to another deadly collision.

This DC train operator that was caught in the act was suspended for five days without pay.

Valley Swim Club Philadelphia Forces Out Black Children (Video)

Over 60 African-American campers from Philadelphia were turned away from the Valley Swim Club, which is a private club, because “there was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club.”

At least that’s how John Duesler, President of the club puts it. It’s hard to believe that boneheads like this still exist in America today.

It may surprise you to know that certain private clubs still forbid African-Americans, women and gay people. Not only that, but this type of discrimination is considered perfectly legal.

It is estimated that there are some 4,000-plus private golf clubs, according to Golf Digest. Of course, since these clubs are private, their exact enrollment standards are not included in the public record.

“When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool,” one parent wrote in an e-mail. “The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately.”

Campers were not told exactly why they are no longer welcome at the club.

“They just kicked us out. And we were about to go. Had our swim things and everything,” said camper Simer Burwell.

Hey, is this 2009? How can clubs still get away with this kind of nonsense?

LeBron James is spending his off-season heading up a basketball training camp called the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, OH. The camp, which is sponsored by Nike, gives promising young high school talent the chance to learn from the best…LeBron, that is.

Could there be a new challenger to that throne? It could happen. Xavier sophomore Jordan Crawford got the upper hand LeBron during a pick-up game and dunked on him. It was a mammoth, two-handed dunk on LeBron James.

Video cameras were rolling, but you won’t get to see the footage. Right after the monster dunk, LeBron James spoke with Nike Basketball Senior Director, Lynn Merritt.

Just moments later, Merritt approached all cameramen present confiscated their tapes. Looks like LeBron James didn’t want the video going viral on YouTube.

Hey, Nike, thanks for the censorship.

Cyber Attack Targets Government Websites

A botnet of about 50,000 infected computers has been attacking U.S. government websites and causing trouble for businesses in both the United States and South Korea.

The attack started this past Saturday it knocking out the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s website on Monday and Tuesday. Other government agencies have also been targeted, including the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“The DOT has been experiencing network incidents since this past weekend. We are working with the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team [US-CERT] at this time,” a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury confirmed that its website had also been hit with a denial-of-service attack.

Other targets have included U.S. Bancorp, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of State, the White House, the U.S. Department of Defense, the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ.

For now, the cyber attack is really more of a headache than an actual security threat. We’re talking about a plain old DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack that bombards sites with useless requests, which in turn makes them unavailable for legitimate users.

Security experts estimate the size of the botnet at somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 computers.

There was an Emma Watson wardrobe malfunction at the star-packed London premiere of the new Harry Potter movie. Watson and the other cast members of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince got drenched in the rain, then a gust of wind blew her way.

The actress’ full-length dress was blown open enough to expose her undergarments as she made a break for the shelter of a large umbrella. Watson plays Hermione Granger in the film series.

Some of the other actors wore white ribbons on their wrists in memory of actor Rob Knox, who played Ravenclaw student Marcus Belby. Knox who was stabbed to death outside a bar last year.

Chrome OS: Google Takes on Microsoft

Google has dropped the bomb. The company has just announced that it’s going to roll out its own operating system, called Google Chrome OS. The new OS should be lightweight and will be based on the Chrome browser. Clearly, Google is issuing a challenge to Microsoft with this announcement, taking us one step closer to Planet Google.

There have been rumors circulating about this for quite some time, but frankly, we didn’t take them too seriously. Now, it looks like it is indeed a reality.

From the official announcement:

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google is looking to solve a lot of the problems that exist within today’s Windows-based operating systems. For one, it will simply work the way it’s supposed to.

Google Chrome will operate within a windowing system based on a Linux kernel…meaning that most web apps will work immediately on this operating system.

Wow. We’re still in shock. Big news today from Google. Stay tuned.

Tony La Russa Drops Twitter Lawsuit

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has officially dropped his lawsuit against Twitter regarding a fake Twitter account created in his name.

Some sources thought back in early June that Twitter had reached a settlement with La Russa. Twitter, however, begged to differ explaining that they had no plans to settle the case.

“Mr. La Russa’s lawsuit was an unnecessary waste of judicial resources bordering on frivolous. Twitter’s Terms of Service are fair and we believe will be upheld in a court that will ultimately dismiss Mr. La Russa’s lawsuit”, the Twitter blog post stated.

Now it seems that the case has finally been wrapped up. La Russa has quietly dropped the suit, with no compensation from Twitter. Since the original dispute began, Twitter launched Verified Accounts to protect against this fake account issue.

One of the highlights of the Michael Jackson memorial service was the performance of the Jackson hit “I’ll Be There” by Mariah Carey.

From the very first note, Carey, wearing a black, glittery dress, made it apparent that this would be a more restrained rendition of the song. Singing through her emotions, Mariah Carey was quite emotional throughout the song’s opening moments.

Her partner on the 1992 cover, Trey Lorenz, then came on stage and sang with her, heightening the performance’s gospel undertones. Lorenz, one could argue, displayed even more vocal dynamics than Carey.

Microsoft Warns Of Serious Computer Security Hole

Microsoft has taken the unusual step of warning users about a serious computer security hole it hasn’t yet fixed.

The vulnerability disclosed on Monday affects Internet Explorer users whose computers are running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.

The “hole” allows hackers to remotely take control of victims’ machines. The victims can become infected by merely visiting a website that’s already been hacked.

Experts warn that criminals have been utilizing this vulnerability for almost a week. Thousands of sites have been hacked to serve up malicious software that exploits the vulnerability. People are lured to these websites by clicking a link in spam e-mail message.

The so-called “zero day” vulnerability disclosed by Microsoft affects a part of its software used to play video.

Microsoft is urging vulnerable users to disable the problematic part of the Internet Explorer software, which can be done from Microsoft’s website, while they work on a “patch” for the problem.

Former Three’s Company star Joyce Dewitt was arrested for DUI on July 4th. Police report that Joyce DeWitt was pulled over when she blew through a barricade in El Segundo.

A police officer stated that Joyce DeWitt showed signs of intoxication and was given a sobriety test on the spot. DeWitt was taken to the police department, booked and then released.

What caught many fans off guard was the Joyce DeWitt mug shot. She just doesn’t quite look like the Janet you may remember from the Three’s Company days.

According to DeWitt’s official website, she has been in many theatrical productions since that time. She appeared in the 2000 Pulitzer prize winning play Dinner with Friends when it premiered in Canada. She has also starred in Alfred Uhry’s Tony award-winning play The Last Night of Ballyhoo.

Joyce Dewitt is now 60 years old.

Facebook Revenue to Top $500 Million in 2009

Back in April, Facebook crossed the 200 million active users mark. That number has now gone well over 225 million.

Now, Facebook board member Marc Andreessen says that Facebook will have revenue of at least $500 million in 2009. Furthermore, he thinks the company will be making billions of dollars in sales within the next five years.

The current Facebook philosophy seems to be that, for now, getting more users is more important than increasing ad sales.

Remember, it’s only been about 12 weeks since Facebook hit the 200 million user milestone, so they must be registering hundreds of thousands of new users daily.

This much is certain. Facebook is unstoppable…for now.

Houston Car Chase Video

After an hour-long Houston car chase that spanned two counties, a suspect was arrested on Monday afternoon.

The chase started at about 1pm, local time, when Houston police decided to investigate suspicious activity inside of a white van. As the police officer approached the van, the suspect fled.

Several police officers followed and a high speed chase
was underway. The van weaved in and out of traffic, almost struck a motorcyclist, and put pedestrians and motorists at risk. The chase came to an end when Houston police followed the van into a parking garage at the Houston Mall.

The suspect then jumped from the top of a parking garage onto a platform. Police were able to subdue him and placed him under arrest.

The third stage of the Tour de France saw strong crosswinds that allowed a huge breakaway to split the field wide open. This benefited Lance Armstrong greatly.

Team Columbia orchestrated a huge 28-man breakaway which shook up the 2009 Tour de France, keeping Fabian Cancellara of Team Saxo Bank in the yellow jersey in the lead, Tony Martin of Columbia second at 33 seconds behind, but boosting Lance Armstrong from tenth to third place.

Jenna Bush wore an Oscar de la Renta gown for her wedding to Henry Hager. As Oscar de la Renta
isn’t known for making “simple” dresses, we were eager to see this one.

The Jenna Bush wedding dress seemed fairly simple as far as the cut goes. It’s a v-neck gown with a very short train. The cut is the only simple thing about it, however. The rest of this dress is absolutely stunning. It was perfect for her outdoor wedding and reception at the Bush family’s Prairie Chapel Ranch.

Jenna accessorized her gown well, wearing quartz earrings and a few white flowers in her hair. She decided not to wear a veil, and carried a bouquet of white flowers, which complimented the beading and embroidery of the gown.

Is the ghost of Michael Jackson now haunting his former home? Some fans say yes, according to what people have seen in a video that aired on CNN late last week as cameras were given a guided tour of Michael Jackson’s Neverland ranch in California.

The video clip shows what appears to be a ghost moving across a hallway. The reporter and the crew fail to see the figure at the time.

The Michael Jackson ghost was captured when the CNN cameras were pointed down a long hallway. Suddenly, a human-like shadowy figure appears at its far end.

This isn’t the first time that CNN cameras have picked up something unusual.

Sahel Kazemi Pics

As we reported yesterday, former Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair was shot dead, along with 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi. Initial reports stated that the incident was a double homicide, but now subsequent reports suggest a homicide-suicide (see video below)…but still don’t indicate who was the homicide victim.

McNair died from four gunshot wounds, two in the head and two in the chest. Sahel Kazemi died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Police have now revealed a critical detail…the gun was found next to Kazemi’s body, not McNair’s.

Reports state that Kazemi had a new black Cadillac Escalade that McNair bought and registered in both of their names. Two days before her death, she was arrested for DUI. McNair posted her bail, a friend says.

TMZ.com showed McNair gazing and smiling at the young Kazemi.

McNair met Kazemi while she was a waitress at Dave & Busters.
