i LOVE leather. i love everything about it. the way it looks, the way it feels, the way it ages so beautifully. i also love to make things from leather and when i saw this DIY post over at Design Sponge i did a little happy dance (in my head).

i absolutely love the "tea party in the bush" at the top. looks like those girls are having a good time. when i see my grandmother again i will have to ask her about the stories behind each of these. till then i am making up my own...

big city girl

i discovered some rad old pictures this past Christmas holiday, on a visit to see my grandmother. these ones were taken while she was studying to be a nurse.

top: on the streets of Cape Town - my grandmother (right) was about seventeen years old when this picture was taken. she still has the string of pearls she wore in the photo.

middle & bottom: her first practical working experience was at Groote Schuur hospital where she met Dr.Chris Barnard, the South African cardiac specialist who performed the world's first human heart transplant. they became good friends and remained close, until his death in 2001.

...the mice will play! my husband and the team took a well deserved break from the intensive renovations on our boat. Rufus made a short video of their weekend away, on an old video camera he bought about 10yrs ago in in the UK.

it's really great for me to get a glimpse into the happenings down there in SA while i'm still working here in Zambia. not long now, though!

sandal samples

i started experimenting with making leather goods last year. first i made a bag and now i want to attempt to make a pair of sandals for my friend, Vivian. whilst browsing for inspiration i found these on Etsy.

i know i am nowhere near experienced enough to make those 'wedges' but maybe one day...

the latest addition to my blogroll is my friend Debra's new blog. it is a collection of all the photos she takes, of her family and internation travels. as the blog's name suggests all the shots are taken using film and her camera of choice is a Pentax Spotmatic.

she also took some beautiful photos of her sister Jessica's (of Nook fame) wedding last year. hopefully she will post some of those for you to see (?).

i am having a serious obsession with food lately (good cheese, fresh bread & veggies), and all things south african (darling brew beer) while i'm working in Zambia for a few months so these shots are my favourites right now.
