Suki Michelle is a life-long Chicagoan, happily divorced and still good friends with her Ex. She lives and writes with her soul-mate, Carlyle Clark. Why I Always Wanted to be a Writer

I’ve always wanted to be a writer because my head is crowded with characters, and they want out. No, not just want – demand! They are ever-morphing beings whose actions and adventures are constantly being imagined and re-imagined. This makes them restless and unhappy inside my head. Who would want to exist like that? Not my characters. They want to live.

They want to experience the world, travel strange new settings, and face compelling conflicts. They are not content to be idle, filled with angst, to bemoan their fate. The characters that populate my brain yearn to take their fate in hand. They will not be denied, and so I write – for them – for their freedom, so they can live.

But here is the most incredible thing about being a writer, a spinner of tales, a teller of stories. If you tell them well enough, strangers will want to read them. In fact, they will pay you for the privilege. Every writer’s dream is to spend every waking minute bringing those characters to life and share them with others who will love them as much as the writer does. A skillful writer has that rare ability to enthrall and entertain no matter what the genre. What a feeling! To touch people in this way, make them cry, laugh, bite their nails, and wipe their brows with anticipation, and to ask the question all writers hope to inspire - what happens next?

Many who have read The Apocalypse Gene have thanked us for providing that very experience, and there is no greater thrill. My co-writer, Suki Michelle, and I want nothing more than to be welcomed into your life so we can continue to do just that. To paraphrase the great and prolific master, Stephen King, “We want your hearts”.

How does a writer touch a heart? By designing the cleverest of plots? By making up fantastical settings? These things are wonderful, but they are not enough. There is only one element, if skillfully executed, that has that magic power. It lies with characters, you know - the ones that occupy that cramped and bustling space in my mind.

Think of the stories you love, be they books, or movies, or mini-series, sure there are some that you are awed by and enjoy because of some aspect or another, a Sixth Sense twist, or a fascinating DaVinci Code type mystery. But I will wager the vast majority of the tales you cherish are because you love the characters. You care what happens to them. You truly care.

That is why I’ve always wanted to be a writer. It’s about love. We bring the characters we love to the page, but that’s not enough. We inspire you to love them too. Just look at all the love we offer to the world!

My Inspiration for Writing

I’ve always been a voracious reader, but at a young age I realized I didn’t want all of my adventures to happen between the pages of books. I wanted to have real life escapades, too. I’ve done a lot of things that girls aren’t “supposed” to do. I’ve worked as a forest firefighter, and as an apprentice carpenter; I’ve walked through Costa Rican rain forests alone at night; I’ve traveled across Mexico by myself; I’ve worked as a Hollywood screenwriter.

Even though many girls are told they can be anything they want when they grow up, the reality is that there are many professions that are very male dominated, and not just the professions you’d imagine like firefighting or construction work. Only 4% of major motion pictures are directed by women. Only 3% of the artwork in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC is created by women. Only 15% of screenwriters are women. So the reality is that in many careers, it’s harder for females to break out and be successful.

Through my writing I want to INSPIRE women and girls to have adventures and push against the societal expectations of what women are “allowed” to do. I also want girls to know that they don’t have to conform to expectations for what it means to be “girly” and “feminine;” and that they really can pursue their wildest dreams. And I want readers of THE EARTHQUAKE MACHINE to have an opportunity to experience a book about a girl who isn’t afraid to take risks and live life fully.

Harwell had returned to his chair and was leaning forward, his hands folded on the desk. A receding hairline had always made his promontory brow appear large and foreboding. A deepening set of furrows made it clear he was not in the mood to debate his diagnosis. “Look, John, it’s my job to give you the best medical advice I can. So rather than waste any more time, why don’t you—”

“But there must be some other kind of treatment,” John interrupted. “Even if it takes longer, or means more money. I know I could find some way to work off the debt.”

Harwell’s eyes drew thin. “I’m afraid not.”

John knew the doctor’s reputation for unleashing a quick temper on anyone who disagreed with him. But with the leech bucket only a few feet away, he was more than ready to risk the threat of Harwell’s volatile disposition. He began slowly, pushing the words out with tense uncertainty. “I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. Stories . . . rumors of elixirs and potions used long ago. I’ve heard some of the old men in the village talk about such things, about books that contain cures used by healers,” John nodded toward the doctor as if indicating Harwell’s participation was a matter of record. “To treat their patients, especially when there was no other way.”

It was a half-truth at best. Several years ago, John had overheard a few of the older men talking in hushed tones about ancient remedies, but they abruptly changed the subject when they suspected someone else might be listening.

The doctor bristled. “We need to concentrate on getting you well, John. And we need to start now, before more damage is done. The methods from the past have no bearing on the present.”

“So there were other ways?” John was surprised the doctor would admit to their existence, always having believed they were more fable than fact.

Harwell’s features grew stern, his face turning the color of dull river stone. Finally, he spoke, his words delivered with an unmistakable growl. “Yes, John, there were other cures. But they were used long ago.”

Other cures.

It brought a flash of hope, and John waited, ready to hear more. But Doctor Harwell sat silent, finished.

“Can you tell me about them, the old ways of treating this condition?”

John swallowed hard as he saw the veins rise in the doctor’s neck, the deep blue streaks throbbing under Harwell’s ashen skin.

“Why do you persist in this?” Harwell roared, his voice penetrating all corners of the room. “Why this ridiculous interest in old, outdated remedies?”

“Because it’s my body that needs curing, just as your own need would drive you to seek out every possibility.”

Harwell was noticeably taken back at the boldness of John’s answer, and when he spoke, his tone was less sharp. “Yes, John, there were books, very old books, that contained remedies of a sort.”

“Something that would help me?”

The doctor crossed his arms. “No. Not in the way you’re thinking.”

John was silent for a moment. He remembered the village farrier refusing to water down a bottle of horse tonic for an ailing neighbor, explaining the dosage would be a dangerous guess and could just as easily kill as cure. “Is it because the treatments were for animals? Is that why they can’t be used today?”

“No, John, that has nothing to do with it.” The doctor paused as if gathering his thoughts, choosing his words carefully before speaking. “Back then, medicine was not practiced in the same manner as it is today. There have been many improvements in the way we treat sickness and disease.”

“And those leeches,” John shot back as he pointed to the bucket, “are better than the old remedies? They will heal me faster?”

“Yes. That’s correct.” Harwell waited a moment, undoubtedly wanting to make sure John understood the finality of his answer. “And if we don’t begin immediately, it will be dark before you can leave for home. Dealing with that road is hard enough in the daytime, and in a weakened condition . . .” The doctor paused, correcting himself. “What I mean to say is that I don’t want you attempting the ride home too soon after a bleeding.”

“I guess that makes sense,” John said, almost too softly for Harwell to hear. Then he added, “Perhaps if you could describe the old remedy, tell me how it works, it would be easier for me to—”

“You don’t understand, John,” the doctor interrupted. “It’s not something I can put in front of you, like a jar of ointment or a bottle of laudanum.”

“But if you explained it to me,” John insisted, “then the decision would be easier.”

The doctor thundered back. “Why do you believe you have a choice in the matter? If you want to be healed, the treatment is here.” Harwell pointed to the leech bucket. “And besides,” he added, trying to calm himself, “it would be inappropriate for me to speak of such things, particularly when it would only serve to distract you from proper medical attention.”

John could tell the doctor was out of patience, but the sight of the bloodsucking parasites squirming through the foul river mud drove him to speak. “But what if it was only to satisfy my curiosity. What would be wrong with that?”

Lucius Harwell rocked forward and back in his chair, his expression unable to conceal his struggle between anger and the discipline his profession demanded. “John, there are reasons,” he said, his voice metered with patronizing restraint. “The old cures were not based on proven medicine, not back then. Most were useless folk remedies, or worse, toxic potions that did more harm than good.” The doctor hesitated. “And many of those harmful concoctions were grounded in . . . witchcraft.”

John shook his head in defiance. “There’s no such thing. Stories of witches and goblins are for children, to keep them quiet and huddled in their beds. I have no interest in silly superstitions. I just want to know if there’s any chance I can rid myself of this illness and be spared the leeching.” He winced at his own insolence as he noticed the doctor’s hands beginning to shake.

I gave Ruby Red an overall rating of 5/5 and recommend the novel to those who enjoy Young Adult Fiction, with historical and time-travel elements.

Here is a summary of the novel for those of you who are not familiar with Ruby Red:

It’s probably safe to say that those who love to write know it from the time of birth. We grow up being the odd kids with the overactive imagination; the ones that force you to go home and ask your parents if magical flying unicorns really do exist. We start out as storytellers until we learn to write. The writing evolves over time, molding into whatever preferences we begin to develop as teenagers and adults. In my case, I think it’s always been a bit dark.

I blame the house I grew up in. It was built in the 1920’s, I believe. My parents bought it off of two older women; sisters. Unless I’m getting the story confused with one of many swirling in my head, one of the sisters died. I remember my mother telling me this and the very first thought that popped in my head was, in the house? It wouldn’t have surprised me. Between the strange sounds I’d hear at night and the cold caress of fear that brushed the back of my neck every time I had to venture down to the basement, I was convinced the house was haunted.

We lived there for about 20 years. It was the kind of layout that had the best hiding places. Those little nooks tucked away in the walls, hidden by storage and darkness. My favorite was a tiny cupboard under the staircase. Here is where my imagination broke free from the confines of my head. I would gather up my siblings and we’d cram inside the small cubby space. There was no light, so I’d bring a flashlight and shine it on my face. My siblings sat cross-legged and wide-eyed listening to me spin a creepy tale. And just like that, I’d turn their bedrooms into a portal for monsters, minutes before bedtime.

Over time my stories diverged into poetry, starting out the ‘roses are red…’ until they eventually became dark and poignant. I loved giving readers something to think about by the end of it. In high school, I took a creative writing class and learned about metaphors in writing. Oh so fun. This is when my poetry expanded into little flash stories. And so began my flash addiction.

My writing sat on the backburner for many years while I went through college, started a career in science of all things, got married and began having children. Then in 2008, I sat down to write and didn’t stop until I finished a ridiculously long YA novel. The very first novel I’d ever written – completed. The next year, I wrote another novel. And the year after, I started Somnium. The story was based on my little sister, an aspiring engineer, who’d taken a job out of state. It scared the crap out of me to think of her so far away from her family. The idea of an angel, strong and fierce, looking out for her was so comforting, I decided to make him real in my head. Halos came to life. I wanted more than the pure and celestial beings we’ve come to know. So I created a new class of angels; the gruntmen, hardened and dark, looking for redemption.

At this moment, Requiem, book two of the Halos trilogy, is in the works. It will pick up where Somnium left off and begin to unravel some of the mysteries introduced in book one. I’ve also begun writing some short stories, written from the POV’s of different Halos characters. I’ll be posting these to my website as fun little extras. A novella will also follow that introduces the Halos world.

Stay Tuned: Deadlines, Divas, and Danger

If you need an escape from the long, cold winter days, Stay Tuned should bring some warmth and cheer! Stay Tuned is a faced-paced, fun, behind-the-scenes look at the television industry. The story centers on Melissa Moore, producer for the six and ten o’clock news. Unlike many female heroines of today, Melissa’s life is not perfect—far from it.

While I loved writing Melissa’s character, and watching her grow and develop, the real fun was creating the supporting cast: Over the top, high-maintenance news anchor Alyssa Andrews and best friend-extraordinaire Candace Daughtry.

Alyssa is gorgeous and deliciously evil—think reality TV diva—blithely oblivious to the fact she’s completely self-absorbed. She’s a stereotypical news anchor, perfect on camera, mean as a snake as soon as she’s off the set. In real life, the anchors I worked with are down-to-earth, real people who care about their jobs and viewers. Still, it was great fun to make Alyssa a Paris Hilton look-alike with a serious jealous streak and a mean right hook!

Candace Daughtry is based on my best friend, Lisa. I took all of her wonderful qualities, turned her into a hair stylist, and made her (a little bit) obsessed with Dr. Phil! Like Lisa, Candace is the best friend a girl could ever have—someone you can call at midnight, the person you laugh the hardest with, the person who knows your worst faults and loves you anyway. My friend Lisa has beaten some of the toughest obstacles in life a person could face, and I wanted to draw on that same tenacity and inner fire in Candace. She’s a true friend—I hope everyone is blessed to have a Candace (or Lisa) in her life!

While I had always dreamed about authoring novels, I didn’t get really serious about it until a few years ago. The idea for Stay Tuned is actually based—in part—on a true story. Before I began work at WTVY in Watertown, New York, as a reporter, the two main anchors (who were in a romantic relationship) got into a fistfight in the parking lot of the television station. They were fired, the incident made the newspaper, and a lot of ugly editorials and threats were exchanged. I thought it would be delicious fun to have something similar happen on air and allow readers to watch what happened behind the scenes.

When I decided to retire from the news desk, stay home with my children, and dip my toe into the author world, Stay Tuned was the only novel I wasn’t terrified to show the outside world. The first two shall remain locked in a drawer forever! I’ve since written a few more, including Dancing Naked in Dixie, due out in September of 2012.

Books and reading have always been a big part of my life—I was an English Lit major, have a master’s in journalism, and for a few short, awful months, went to law school in Syracuse, New York. After I came to my senses, I found a job in public relations, and then later became a reporter and anchor (WTVY is near Kingston, ON; WTVY is in Alabama, near the Gulf Coast).

Inspiration

I knew I wanted to be a writer when I was seven years old. Without question. But wanting something and doing something about it are two different things. I can’t pinpoint one inspiration for why I finally wrote my first book. I guess it came out of years of experiences and life’s events, some amazing and wonderful, some heartbreaking and bittersweet. But they each lead me to a point, that lead me to my book.

It started with Nancy Drew. I remember riding my bicycle to the library and then locking myself in my room with that day’s book. I was a voracious reader. But at the same time, I didn’t just want to read the story, I wanted to write it, and wished like mad, that I had come up with it.

So my seven year old self, who had an overactive imagination, daydreamed a lot. Eventually characters were born and a story followed. And somewhere along the way, I started to write my own detective stories.

Sometimes, life pushes and pulls. Sometimes we stay on the track we plan for ourselves, sometimes we stumble a bit or sometimes, we’re pushed off. You know the job, the kids, the PTO meetings and I forgot the dream I once had. It was as if I forgot how to use my imagination, get lost inside of it and I forgot how to dream and create. I still read, but writing, I just couldn’t do it. And then, I discovered Harry Potter.

My kids were too young to have read Harry Potter and it was just by chance that I had heard about the books. I was deeply curious to find out why kids of all ages chose to spend hours at a time, in line, waiting to purchase a book. So, I read them and I was hooked.

I was hooked for several reasons. I could start with good writing, good story planning, fabulous characters or inventive use of Greek Mythology. It was a combination of those and JK Rowling herself. Her life story was impressive. Her rock bottom brought her to the point of writing Harry Potter. The books reminded me how much I loved the fantasy novel, her life inspired me to do what I hadn’t done yet, and that was to write my own novel.

Writing a novel had always been a dream. Actually, it had been number 7 on my bucket list. I was in between jobs, unsure of what I wanted to do and then I remembered. The funny thing is, I was 41 years old when I remembered. And the decision to write my first book was, by far, the best decision I had ever made. So after living with the characters in my head for awhile and developing their stories, I had, as it turned out, my first book, The Day of First Sun. A Young Adult, modern day fantasy in which the heroine and hero are Wizard Guards, magical police officers who protect magic and keep it secret.

I wrote for them, a murder mystery, in honor of the first books I loved. Being that they are wizard police, the opportunity for these characters is boundless. I loved the story line. I loved the chance to turn them into a series, to tell their stories in full. My next project in The Annie Loves Cham series is She Wulf, the continuation of Annie and Cham, their relationship as it changes, and their growth as Wizard Guards. My intention was to put them into a completely new situation and see how they faired at the end of their new adventure. I’m proud of them and the direction that the series is taking.

I chose not to regret the course my life took, though sometimes I wish I had written the book sooner. But sometimes we have to take advice from the strangest places and move on. As I secretly wished I started the process sooner, Katy Perry sang in Firework,

“Maybe you're reason why all the doors are closed -- So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road” Katy Perry.

I realized, I hadn’t been ready to undertake the process of writing a novel. When I was ready, I did. I thank the other writers who came before me, both novelists and songwriters too. Without them, I wouldn’t have had the childhood I had, and the dreams I had. And this path never would have come before me. They came before me, inspired me to do more than just read. They inspired me to imagine and create. And to them, I am forever grateful.

My writing career started with extreme boredom.

I was spending my breaks in between semesters selling cars at a local dealership. Of the fifty hours I worked each week, only about 20 were actually spent with customers.

Instead of discretely watching cat videos on my laptop or dozing off I decided to try and do something productive with my time.

A year and a half later, a terrible novel was born.

I was so young and naive and proud of myself that I thought I was finished.

I showed the novel to my brother (who is a great writer and attempting to break into the screenplay world) and he said it wasn't bad.

WAHOOO! I was ready to be a New York Times bestselling author. Easy as pie.

But my brother basically laughed at me and told me the book had a long way to go.

So I holstered my pride and went back to work.

After about six months and three revisions I took it back to him.

Nope.

More edits, a couple additional scenes, and a few fistfuls of my hair later, a pretty good novel emerged, called, "The Ancillary's Mark." I was lucky enough to get it picked up by a small indie press. It received some decent reviews, including one from Kirkus discoveries, which gave me enough confidence to tackle (pun intended, you'll get it later) the project I REALLY wanted to work on. A fantasy trilogy.

I noticed a lot of fantasy novels were focusing on a social outcast who thrives in another world, and I wanted to switch it up a bit. I thought to myself, "What if a popular football player was sucked into a magical world and struggled there and hated it?" I thought it would be a lot of fun to read and even more fun to write.

Yet again, I found myself young and naive and wrong.

Creating this world with its characters and customs was painstaking and incredibly time consuming and drove me up the wall. I didn't want to borrow any magical creatures or theories from my literary heroes (J.K. Rowling, Patrick Rothfuss) so I had to make my own. Don't get me wrong, it was fun to write, but fun was just one of the many things that went into this journey.

The idea was simple, but after three years, it has become something that I never thought was possible.

The first book is called "Masters of the Veil," and it will be released through Spencer Hill Press on March 1st of next year. I am so proud of it and I hope all who read it will love it as much as I do.

This appreciation of story motivated MB to earn an English degree from Virginia’s Hollins University.

After decade of working in marketing and sales, MB became convinced she could write and sell one of the many stories buzzing around her brain. Fingers crossed, MB left the marketing profession and devoted all her spare time to writing a novel. Soon after, she sold her first manuscript to Harlequin Historicals. Since that initial sale, MB had written twelve historical romances for Harlequin Historicals, four short romantic suspenses for Silhouette Romantic Suspense and a non-fiction book The Insider’s Guide to Direct Marketing. Her first single title romantic suspense for Zebra I’M WATCHING YOU was a December 2007 release.

In 2005, THE UNEXPECTED WIFE was a finalist in the Romance Writers of America’s RITA contest and WISE MOVES was 2006 nominee for Romantic Times’ Critics Choice Award. Thomas Edison once said that, “Genius is one per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration.” I’d say that quote also sums up writing a book. Inspiration or that initial spark of ideas can be very exciting. It is what gets us to that first blank page and dares us to step outside the box and begin typing. Without inspiration to motivate, not many books would get written.

What inspires a book? A song? An article? People? Memories? The answer is yes to all. Inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes. However, that initial spark of inspiration is only the very beginning of your novel. It will take hours of work to weave and thread those wonderful bits and pieces into a book. I’ve often wished the muse would deliver my next story in a neat package, but she never has. She expects me to take my ideas and nurture them. She forces me to spend sleepless nights worrying about character motivations. She drives me to read books on the writing craft. And she insists that I do not one or two drafts of a book but seven.

And so it was with BEFORE SHE DIE\S, which began a couple of years ago when the heroine Charlotte first appeared as a secondary character in my novella Christmas Past in the SILVER BELLS collection. Charlotte was a fascinating character and I was certain hers would be the book that would finally write itself. With utter confidence I sat down to write only to discover the opening scene of the book didn’t present itself until I’d written 400 pages of rough draft. During the second draft, I was forced to dig deeper into Charlotte’s character so that I could understand the villain better. And it was during the 4^th draft that I realized I had a big gaping hole in the book’s middle that needed to be filled. It turned out that BEFORE SHE DIES, which began with such strong inspiration, required just as much work as any of my other novels.

What inspires me to write? Honestly, I’m not sure. I just know it’s something I have to do. I know it’s what drives me to return to the computer each day and work when other people are enjoying a pretty day, reading a good book or relaxing. But I can’t imagine doing anything else.

My advice to aspiring writers? There will always be a good reason not to write. The kids, the job, the dishes, the dog, the significant other—you will always be needed elsewhere. But if you want those first few sparkling ideas to turn into first the first draft of a book and later a polished final, it’s going to take time and a lot of work. However, when you feel like shelving the whole project (and there will be moments like that), think back to what drove you to put pen to paper because it’s going be that one percent of inspiration that keeps you typing.

An author can get asked a lot of questions by readers. Amongst the most popular are:

where does your inspiration come from/where do your ideas come from/why werewolves (in my case, anyway)/what made you decide to start writing/did you always want to be a writer (<<this last one, if said by someone I know, is often accompanied with a slightly wide-eyed expression as though they’ve suddenly discovered something quite eerie about a woman they once considered normal) …

Today, I’m going to (kinda) concentrate on the most common question thrown at me:

Where does your inspiration come from?

People who have read my interviews/guest posts before are probably a little tired of seeing me say ‘my head’—but I simply cannot think of a truer answer.

Some authors find inspiration from people watching, or seeing an event, and their imagination suddenly spirals out of control with a simple question of ‘what if …’ Other authors—Stephen King amongst them—have admitted to finding inspiration from the tiniest of things prompting their thoughts into a whirlwind of chaotic imagery.

The closest I seem to get to a prompt is a song—but even songs aren’t my biggest form of inspiration, despite how many times they’ve pumped my creative juices.

[WARNING: CORNINESS ALERT!]

Nope, my biggest inspiration has to come from dreams.

Whether they be nightdreams or daydreams or nightmares—whichever—this is, without doubt, where most of my ideas for new storylines come from.

I’m a very lucid dreamer. I also dream totally weird and random stuff. I shan’t divulge exactly what occurs within my dreams. So far, I’ve managed to elude the straightjackets folk keep trying to slip on me. I’d quite like to keep it that way.

But more often than not, what occurs within my head stays with me.

Sean Holloway most certainly did. Not with his tale told in Instinct to begin, though—with his tale told in Darkness & Light.

I knew he was a werewolf.

I knew he had a connection with a female—Jem Stonehouse—from a previous existence and why.

I knew I had to get them together somehow.

Thankfully, from the second I began writing his story, each line and every scene appeared clearly to me—despite me writing it from Jem’s POV instead of Sean’s. Before I knew it, the entire novel had been written.

And from the telling of Darkness & Light came the revelations I now share through Instinct. All those little details of where Sean & Jem’s love began. Sean’s attraction to a human female that will lead to some life—even eternity—changing decisions.

The details for Instinct were just as strong in my mind as those for Darkness & Light. And when those whispers of ideas turn into yells impossible to ignore? I pretty much know I’ve stumbled across a story that just has to be told—because my heart leaves me no choice. ;o)

My Review:

Far away in a distant galaxy, one can find a planet known as Cassa. Human like Cassans inhabit this planet, and among them there is a man named Byron. Byron is determined to become a fighter pilot, a Cosbolt, more than anything. His wish is granted by a man named Bassa, a former fighter ship navigator and now lead instructor in the training facility on the dark moon Guaard where Cosbolts teleport from. Byron soon embarks on a mission to end the oncoming war between the Cassans and an alien race, Vindicarns. Byron is not alone on this very important mission, he travels alongside Trindel, his navigator for the voyage. Will they all be able to successfully carry out this mission?

CassaStar is Alex J. Cavanaugh’s debut novel and first installment in this awesome science fiction series. This story is written in alternating point of views between the main characters Bassa, Byron, and Trindel.

My favorite element of CassaStar is the world building Alex J. Cavanaugh created for his readers. I would have definitely loved this story to include more details about this galaxy; however, Alex delivered brilliantly with a straight forward and action-packed storyline, with the addition of realistic and likable characters.

I really enjoyed both Byron and Bassa’s friendship. Bassa plays the role of his mentor, and through patience and determination he helps Byron achieve his dream. Byron begins with a bad attitude due to the lost of his former navigator then becomes an admirable character by the end. Trindel is sort of the character that you find more on the sidelines since the novel’s main focus is on Byron and Bassa; however, Trindel also plays an important role and his character should not be underestimated. There is definitely a lot of emotion throughout the novel in addition to all the action presented to Alex’s readers.

This is a wonderful debut that I truly recommend for all Science Fiction lovers. Look out for my review of Alex J. Cavanaugh’s upcoming release and next installment of this awesome series, CassaFire!

The Only Upside of High School!

Taxes and death are not the only things you can count on. Let’s face it, high school being a real pain in the butt (unless you’re that lucky cheerleader or star quarterback) is a given. But that place did give me one thing…the desire to be a writer was ‘born’ inside those hallowed halls of bad food and smelly lockers. (We had no handsome vampires or wolves to fall in love with in CT - just a whole lot of snow and ice).

I was overweight, frustrated and - worse - a freshman. How much lower on the totem pole can you get, right? I had an English teacher who actually sat with his desk in the back of the class while we watched Macbeth on TV over and over and over again. Upside? I got an A on the final. I had a Science teacher who was actually frightening. Almost everyone failed her class because her pet boa constrictor named, B.C. (I know, very creative) was loose in the classroom the entire time during the lesson. I’m serious. This thing would rub up against you or you’d feel it wrap around your ankle…I mean, come on, there was no way to learn about the Earth’s core when you felt like you were stuck in a scene from “The Crocodile Hunter.”

But there was one teacher who definitely was her own breed; a teacher that all kids and parents long for. She taught history and she loved her job. She was also beyond adorable. About four feet in height with long dark hair that hung practically to the ground, she was a true character from Tolkien’s mind. We had an assignment around Christmastime where we all studied and watched a movie on Nicholas and Alexandra. (The amount of snow they had made me forget about the disgusting stuff piling up outside.)

We were to write a paper about one of the characters from the “Romanov” tragedy over the holiday. When we returned to the classroom all of the girls had their papers done on Alexandra and the boys - naturally - on the Tsar. I was so completely taken with the character of Rasputin that I was the only one to veer away from the ‘high school norm’ and delve into research about that ‘villainous’ human who basically destroyed an entire family. That Christmas vacation was beyond cool. For the first time - where school was concerned - I was thrilled to be doing something. And when I turned in my paper this ‘little educator’ gave me an A, and told me that no matter what I wanted to do with my life, I had to be a writer. She still teaches there, and most likely has set many kids on their career paths by opening doors they never even knew existed.

So, with her help, I began my writing journey much like Frodo did in order to secure the famous ‘ring.’ And I have been so taken with that character ever since that Rasputin actually appears in a couple of my stories - forever paying homage to the teacher I will never forget.

Rebekkah Barrow never forgot the attention her grandmother Maylene bestowed upon the dead of Claysville, the small town where Bek spent her adolescence. Seeing as my most favorite series is coming to an end, I thought it would be a great opportunity to gather all Women of the Otherworld lovers to say goodbye and show our appreciation to such a wonderful series!

The first in a romantic trilogy set during the end times.

My Review:

Lethal mists have taken over the Earth, killing millions, destroying buildings, and dissolving all living things. Humans have become prey; once coming into contact with the mists, everyone and everything dissipates into a pile of water and dust. Very few have survived, those who are left must stick together to find food and shelter themselves against the mists.

Emma, her daughter Mandy, and a few several orphaned children are survivors. Some have developed supernatural abilities. Emma can heal people with a simple touch; however, she doesn’t have full control over her abilities, learning as she goes. When Mandy gets cornered by mists, fearing the worst, Emma is prepared to pull the trigger to take her daughter’s life, when a group of men arrive save Mandy.

To protect the children, Emma offers herself to their leader, Arthur, in exchange for food and shelter. Arthur also possesses a very useful ability, being able to sense when the mists are near. What once began as a business deal later turns into romance; however, Emma and Arthur are both hiding secrets, unable to fully give themselves to one another.

When rogue groups threaten to attack their safe haven, Arthur and Emma must make tough decisions to save themselves and protect the people they love. Will the rogue group attack their village and kill them all, or will the mists get to them first?

Emma is strong, protective, and she cares for the children as though they’re her own. She is definitely my favorite character in this novel. Arthur who’s dominant and possessive characteristics blossom into care and compassion towards Emma and the children adds some romance where in the face of death, some may think there isn’t any room for. There were also many wonderful secondary characters that bring the story to life. I wouldn’t remove any character as they all played an important role in portraying the impact of how severe the threat was to all humanity.

The beautiful cover is yet another added element in addition to the novel’s description itself, which really attracted me to this story. The cover has a creepy factor that captures some elements within the plot. Having covers stay true to the story is always appreciated! Although there were more than two characters shown on the cover, the woman and the distant horse rider, it was great to see that they were incorporated into the cover.

Fallen’s well developed plot and cliffhanger ending will have readers wanting to know what will happen in the next installment of this wonderful post-apocalyptic-romance trilogy.

With engaging characters, action, detailed descriptions, fear and a little hint of romance, readers are in for a fantastic adventure! I recommend this novel to those who enjoy Contemporary Fiction with a Post-Apocalyptic twist.

My Review:

What would you do if you discovered that monsters really do exist? What if they hunted down and slaughtered your family and you had the power to take your revenge? Would you take it? As Deacon Chalk would put it... I sure as hell would…

After several animals are slaughtered at the Atlanta Zoo, Deacon Chalk is called in to take care of the job. However intimidating and indestructible Deacon seems to be he can’t do it alone. Deacon receives the help of the zookeeper and his team made up of strippers, a priest, and the club manager. Don’t be fooled, this team has one goal in mind and will ensure that they accomplish it, to search and destroy all the scary things that go bump in the night…

That Thing at the Zoo prequel novella presents badass monster hunter Deacon Chalk who swears to destroy all things paranormal. Deacon possesses some special abilities that help him carry out his mission. The full extent of his abilities are still a mystery and their origin has not yet been revealed to readers. Although Deacon is described to be this badass, the loss of his family has largely impacted Deacon’s emotions. Their memories threaten to break Deacon down and have him lose control each time he faces danger.

That Thing at the Zoo is written in Deacon Chalk’s perspective, sharing his every thought, which allows readers to better connect with this main character. James R. Tuck’s writing style is very descriptive, giving readers a vivid image of the characters, the battles between good and evil, and all the things Deacon encounters throughout his journey.

I have definitely been captivated by this world that James R. Tuck has created. There is so much to say about this short novella but I will end my review with saying this, what a terrific start to an awesome series by this debut author. Dark urban fantasy lovers will definitely love this!

This novella is a brief introduction as to what to expect in James R. Tuck’s upcoming debut release Blood and Bullets. I recommend That Thing at the Zoo too all those who enjoy gritty Urban Fantasy and Adult Fiction.
