Astronauts Should Ski The Moon

2012-10-02T09:19:00.004-07:00

Astronauts heading to the Moon should learn the art of cross-country skiing, a scientist who flew on the last lunar Apollo mission claims.

Harrison Schmitt, part of the 1972 Apollo 17 crew, said it would allow them to explore faster and more easily. Addressing scientists in San Francisco, he said his knowledge of Nordic skiing had allowed him to glide effortlessly across the dusty lunar surface.

The US space agency (Nasa) will send manned missions to the moon by 2020. "When you're cross-country skiing, once you get a rhythm going, you propel yourself with a toe push as you slide along the snow," explained Dr Schmitt. "On the Moon, in the main you don't slide, you glide above the surface. But again, you use the same kind of rhythm, with a toe push."

Apollo 13 Checklist Sells for $388,375

2011-11-30T11:47:00.000-08:00

From the Sacremento Bee:

DALLAS -- A checklist used by Apollo 13 commander James Lovell to make calculations that helped guide the damaged spacecraft home has been sold at auction for $388,375.

Dallas-based Heritage Auctions sold the checklist Wednesday as part of a batch of U.S. space program artifacts being offered during its "Space Signature Auction."

The checklist was sold to an anonymous collector. The pre-auction estimate for the checklist was $25,000.

Michael Riley, senior historian at Heritage, says that without the checklist, the crew would not have known their position in space.

On April 13, 1970, an oxygen tank exploded as the spaceship was four-fifths of the way to the moon. The crew was forced to scrap the moon mission and focus on getting back to Earth alive.
