Apollo 13 Checklist Sells for $388,375

DALLAS -- A checklist used by Apollo 13 commander James Lovell to make calculations that helped guide the damaged spacecraft home has been sold at auction for $388,375.

Dallas-based Heritage Auctions sold the checklist Wednesday as part of a batch of U.S. space program artifacts being offered during its "Space Signature Auction."

The checklist was sold to an anonymous collector. The pre-auction estimate for the checklist was $25,000.

Michael Riley, senior historian at Heritage, says that without the checklist, the crew would not have known their position in space.

On April 13, 1970, an oxygen tank exploded as the spaceship was four-fifths of the way to the moon. The crew was forced to scrap the moon mission and focus on getting back to Earth alive.

This Cue Card flew to Lunar orbit in the Apollo 10 Lunar Module, Snoopy in May 1969. It was used by the crew as a quick reference guide for the configuration of the LM's reaction control system in preparation for docking with the Command and Service Module.

Apollo 17 Flown To The Lunar Surface Checklist Page with Lunar Dust

This page from the Apollo 17 Lunar Module Checklist deals with tasks that Cernan and Schmitt had to perform about 30mins after the first EVA, such as removing the PLSS and Space Suit. It also deals with storing lunar rock samples and because of this, the page has become smudged with Lunar Dust. The page has been stamped as ‘Landed on the Moon Aboard The Apollo 17 LM ‘Challenger’” and hand signed by Gene Cernan.

Large US Flown to the Moon Flag

Most of the flags flown to the moon were either 6x4 inch or 5.5x4 inches in size, but this flown flag from Apollo 14 is 4 times the size at 11 x 8 inches. It comes from the personal collection of Lunar Module Pilot, Edgar Mitchell who has inscribed the flag and supplied a COA. The flag has been framed along with a brass plaque.

A total of 25 Apollo Astronaut signatures! 18 of the signatures were applied on July 16th 1986 at the Apollo Reunion in Washington DC. A further 7 signatures were then added at later signings and events

Apollo 15 Cover Flown to the Lunar Surface

This is one of the infamous Apollo 15 flown covers first confiscated and later released by NASA during the Apollo 15 Covers Scandal. This particular cover is from the Apollo 15 Crew's batch of 298 covers, which travelled to the lunar surface along with 100 covers for German Stamp dealer Hermann Sieger. All 398 covers were un-authorized for flight and when Sieger started to sell his covers it caused a scandal and NASA were forced to remove the Apollo 15 Crew form flight status and confiscated the covers. Only in 1983 did Al Worden successfully sue the government to have the 298 covers returned to the crew.

This 8.5 x 11 inch glossy photo signed by all three of the Apollo 11 Crew is very special because it actually shows Neil Armstrong on the lunar surface!. There are famously no good photos of Neil on the moon, which means there are no good signed photos of Neil on the Moon, but this photo was printed from the 16mm movie camera which filmed Neil and Buzz from the Lunar Module.

This is the 2nd Apollo 16 Flown Bungee Strap we have offered, this one is over 14 inches long and was flown to lunar orbit and used on Apollo 16 to hold items still in Zero Gravity.

6x4 inch US Flag Flown on Apollo 10, the final dress rehearsal mission before the first manned moon landing, which tested all the vital Lunar Module and Command Module maneuvers in Lunar Orbit. US Flags are the most sought after Lunar Flown Flags, and this one has been hand inscribed by Apollo 10 Astronaut Gene Cernan as, "Flown To The Moon On Apollo 10 - Gene Cernan LMP". It also comes with a photograph of Cernan holding the presentation.

Apollo 17 Flown Map Plate

This 10.5" x 8" inch Lunar Map, from Apollo 17 Commander Gene Cernan's personal collection was used during the Apollo 17 Mission to help the Astronauts observe features on the Moon's Surface from Lunar Orbit. It has been printed on a glossy plastic type paper and has a Certification label attached to it which reads, "The Crew used this Apollo 17 CSM Lunar Landmark Map to study the Moon from Lunar Orbit - Gene Cernan - Eugene A. Cernan Apollo 17 Commander"

Apollo 14 Flown Plastic Beta Cloth Bag

This Plastic Bag was used to house Beta Cloth Patches and was flown to lunar orbit on the Apollo 14 mission. The bag has been signed and certified on the front by Ed Mitchell. It deals with the procedures the crew needed to do immediately after EVA 3, hence the lunar dust! It also bares handwritten notations made while on the lunar surface.

Not only is this a great Flown to the Lunar Surface item from Apollo 17, but it also contains a significant amount of Lunar Dust form the Valley of Taurus Littrow. It is illegal to buy or sell Moonrocks from Apollo, so this item is one of the only ways to legally own some Lunar material.

The page itself was used by the crew in the LM on the lunar surface, and contains annotations that were hand written whilst on the Lunar Surface.

40th Anniversary of Apollo 13

Its 40 years since the Apollo 13 mission blasted off on its ill-fated mission to the moon on April 13th 1970. During the coast to the moon an electrical fault caused an explosion in one of the oxygen tanks causing the spacecraft to lose oxygen. Only the dedication and teamwork of the crew with mission control in Houston saved the mission and the crew splashed down safely.

This is the first Moonpans newsletter of 2010, and we have a couple of great new items.

Apollo 16 Flown Bungee Strap

This has got to be one of the best items we have offered, a Bungee Strap over 1 foot long flown to lunar orbit and used on Apollo 16 to hold items still in Zero Gravitiy.

The strap consists of 2 large heavy cloth pieces with snap fasteners joined together by a long metal spring, and comes from the personal collection of Commander John Young. it is archivally framed along with a COA signed by Young, with two 4inch AB Emblem patches.

Neil Armstrong Signed WSS Portrait

This Neil Armstrong signed portrait is inscribed simply to 'Matt'. It is quite uncommon to find an Armstrong inscribed to a first name only, and perfect if your name is Matt
