Do you Know Your Decorating Style?

Do you know your decorating style? Classic, Romantic, Modern, Country, Minimalist? There are too many styles to name them all. Knowing your style can definitely help you with your decorating needs. It can keep focused, help you narrow down exactly what you you like, and help you to steer clear of what you don't like. One way to determine your style is taking a look at your wardrobe. What style and colors do you wear? I tend to wear ruffles, red, black and fun jewelry.

Let me explain further... I love Country French! No question about it.

These pictures depict exactly my style.

Since I know this is what my style is I can look at all kinds of other styles and see and admire their beauty, but I know it's not for me because it won't fit into my look.

For instance... This room is beautiful and I really love it, but it is not my style and it would look terrible with Country French Decor. Notice the straight lines and absence of color. A very Calming look.

From these pics it's pretty easy to pick out what won't work work with the Country French style. So How can you Identify your style? What makes you the most comfortable, in color, in furniture, in fabrics? When you page through a magazine what is it that makes you think a photo is so delicious and wonderful, you could almost eat it. Is it casual, elegant, rustic, modern...? Think about what it is that truly would make you want to disappear in that space. Then begin by adding some of those items to your home.

Whether it be just some flowers at the grocery store, or a few new pillows, maybe a new kitchen rug, start and build from there.

With spring in the air and Easter just around the corner I thought I would share with you some ideas for creating a spring centerpiece for you Holiday Table. Obviously the easy way out is to pick up some grocery store flowers and throw them in a vase... but you can do some much moore with that! Happen to have some lemons, oranges, or limes in your frig? You can slice them and place in a clear vase, instantly you have a custom arrangement. Add water for your flowers of course, and no worries about the fruit in the water. In fact it brings out the rich color of the fruit.

Or how about letting the fruit be the star...

Here is a banquet centerpiece I arranged for my sister's gathering. She happens to have citrus growing in her front yard. What a perfect opportunity to show it off!

And smaller ones on vintage table cloths to adorn the the smaller tables.

Vegetables can be used in the same way, and the water will only enhance their beauty. Here are some Vege Centerpieces with no flowers,

During the holidays it is lots of fun to put candy in the vase. But how can you do that without ruining the candy in the water? Let me share that little

Have you ever taken some clothes out of the washer or dryer and come to find out they are covered in lint. You may have accidentally left a Kleenex or piece of paper in a pocket or something that causes a mess on you other clothes. Well it recently happened in my washer. I took my favorite Black Corduroy Jeans out of the washer and was disappointed to see that they were covered in lint. ( the picture really doesn't show how much lint they had on them, they were covered!)

I hung them up to dry and went to look for my lint roller. After not being able to find it, I remembered a new idea that I had heard about. Using rubber gloves....

So when my Jeans were dry and ready to be ironed I remembered to wet the rubber gloves...

And gently rubbed them across the legs of my pants...

And believe it or not it worked!

Awesome !

I just dipped my gloves in the sink again and pulled up more and more lint.

They ironed up beautifully and you couldn't even tell that they were minutes before temporally ruined with lint. What an easy solution.

Don't Be Afraid, it's only Color!

I often get asked the question, "How do I add color to my rooms?" For the most part people seem to be afraid to add color to their neutral rooms. Builders leave the shell of homes in a neutral pallet, so they can please the most amount of people. After you own the home that's your opportunity to make it Yours! I hope I can ease some of that Fear in adding color. Balance is the Key Word to all decorating. Think of weights and measures, when you see color in your home does it all balance?

This Room is a basic neutral tan color pallet and the designer has added 3 colors, Black Red and White.

A great way in fact, to add color is to pick a three colors that you like together. One larger print that works as the main focal print & includes at least the three colors then add two other colors, either solids or small prints.

I sometimes think people get clutter confused with adding color. Take this room for example...
It is difficult to see the basic room here, because there is to much clutter. If the dishes were edited, and the counter cleared you might be able to pick out some of the owners favorite pieces and build from that. Color won't help TO Much Clutter! It will add to No Visual Rest.
Let's say the Green and Yellow dishes. We could add a very light green or yellow paint, a printed valance or window covering and some yellow flowers in the window. Maybe a large Green and Yellow floral rug. You would then see that the room was green and yellow, not a cluttered mess.

This room is very simple but just enough color to give it personality.

Cutie Patootie Baby Quilt!

I love making baby quilts, because they are a mini version of a big one. Not near as much fabric or work is needed. Rag Quilts are so fun and cute for a baby size quilts. Here are a few...

There are so many different patterns like table runners, purses, and stockings,

basically used just like a regular quilt.

I had made a Rag Quilt before so I already knew the process. The tutorial from
U create crafts was where I got the idea for this stripe style. I will give you an abrieviated addition because I just sort of did my own thing with the size.

Found some adorable flannel fabric in fun colors. 1 yard of each print, 2 yards of the pink for the back and binding, and 2 yards of white for the batting.

Cut into random size strips sandwhiching the backing,

one piece of the batting, and a printed strip. Right sides facing out- on top and bottom.

Now, back sides together, pin and sew the stripes

with the seam facing the printed fabrics.

Trim the edges all around the quilt so it is a nice even.

I cut a 3" continous bias strip of the pink backing fabric to bind the quilt.

There is a great tutorial on the McCalls Quilting site.

Sew the bias strip all the way around and fold it over, finishing the edge with a whip stitch, by hand on the front side of the quilt.

Next snip the strip seams 1/4" all the way across.

And then when everything is binded and clipped.....

You throw it in the washer...

And when it comes out is is all soft and ruffled... So Cute!

And there you have a it...A Cutie Patootie Baby Quilt in an afternoon!

Can't wait to send it to my new great niece!

Etched Glass...or is it?

I came home one day and found a BB-Gun Hole with a shattered window in my front door. Since it was the Front door I needed to take care of it right away. My husband and I went off to the local Big Box Home store and tried to find a door. We wanted to find the exact door because even standard doors often have some varaitions, in size, many choies as far as a window or not, and having to order something special, and so on. We were lucky enough to find the exact door, except for the fact that the window was clear glassm not etched as it had been before.

While my husband was discussing the cost of just the glass and the grid I waundered off. I found some window film that was looked very much like etched glass.

And...It came in a variety of patterns.

And what do you know the exact film that was on our door!

We had actually thought our door was Etched Glass. It looks very Real.

It was so easy to put on one side of the glass and add the grid. Just by sauirting on some water the film will stick forgood on the glass.

We had our old door back in no time.

Nothing Fancy, but stylish enough, and really quite attractive. I continue to be amased at how new products are created at a fraction of the cost to give the look of high dollar items. One again we were able to create a designer look, for very little money.

I was Happy!

Color Trends for 2013

Many companies put out their predictions to what the new color trends are going to be the new year. Pantone a color expert in the industry just announced their choice for color of the year 2013. Emerald Green!

The experts at Pantone believe "Color is essential to your life. The colors you love are deep and vital affirmations of who you are. Bringing those colors into your day and your environment is the ultimate form of self-expression."

I totally agree!

Here are a sample of some products in this years color of the year.

Pantone's pallet for the 2013 Colors-

Blue is a color that is always in the palette, in varying shades. But this year we are going to be seeing a darker navy or True Blue, they are calling it Morocco Blue.

Blue is always there because it is our BBF, that best friend color. It shows up in some form in just about every home in America.

Pittsburgh Paints has their own paint palette for 2013.

Quite similar as you can see. Consumers are energized and excited to see all the new products in the new colors. We as a society go along with the new choices and before long, our homes are filled with the new colors.

Grey has been Strong in the color palette for a few years now. A color that was traditionally a man's color choice. But in recent years Women are loving all the wonderful ways grey has made an appearance, on our walls and furniture, and now even fabrics. This new neutral trend has created everything from urban to romantic and really an upscale feel.

"Mackenzie Childs's" Kitchen look alike!

When we moved last summer, the kitchen had some southwestern tiles on the wall, that really were not my style. they didn't gel with that cute country kitchen feel that I waas looking to achieve. The majority of the kitchen was tan and white checkered, except for about eight tiles of cactus designs. My first thought was that those will have to go! I was on a tight budget and knew that replacing the tiles would be more expensive then what I wanted to spend. So I started thinking about how I could cover them????? As I was putting contact paper on may pantry shelves
a lightbulb went off in my head. I thought I would try to cut squares of white contact paper & stick them on each designed tile to cover them.

As you can see, the coverage was awesome. Well I realized I would need to get a tan colored contact paper as well to cover the other tiles. I decided to live with the contact paper on the tiles for a few days to see if they would stick and look Ok.
Before I went back to the store I had another light bulb moment. Why not get Black instead, and cover all the tan tiles to create a black and white checkered tiled back splash. Now that would create some real charm for that small kitchen. A kind of "Mackinzie Child's" Kitchen look.

Don't you agree, It adds lots of charm to this small space. I love it! You really can not tell that it's contact paper. I have replaced a few tiles near the sink that get soaked now and then, but for about $15.00 it's a great alternative!

Everything needs a Home!

What is the secret to staying organized? To me it's that ever single item in your house needs a home. From your clock on the wall to the napkins on your kitchen counter, to you mail, to your dirty dishes, to your fresh flowers you just received as a gift. As we move things around in our home we must designate places for our things, otherwise they become CLUTTER.

UGH!

No Visual Rest!

the main thing the stresses us out when our houses look like this.

In these pictures the bones are there to have a nice clutter free home...

lots of storage, wall space, light, a nuetral backdrop.

Here is a clutterd kitchen, but maybe tends to look a little like a lot of kitchens. the owner probably just added things on the wall and countertop without really editing as time went on.

Now here is a similar kitchen. With no clutter and lots of visual rest. AAAh... very pleasant!

I would like to show you how easy clutter happens. As you come in my door up the steps I have a sideboard that I use a s a space to display some decorator items... but it can easily become a drop off zone.

My purse, drinks, scarf, jackets, coffee cups, pens, hats, phones, keys or whatever you are walking in or through the house with. And if those things are not put back as a few days pass clutter grows.

Here is what it should look like...

Those items that make up that clutter all have a place where they should be put away.

I always hang my purse on my panrty door.

Of course coats and scarfs and jackets go in the coat closet.

And hats in another closet.

Over the years I have learned that if every single item has a place in your home, if gives you that Visual Rest that your mind so craves when you come home for Rest.

I encourage you to schedule time each week to declutter. Once a week cleaning is always a good time. I usually take a few minutes before I go up to bed to staighten my living area and kitchen to put away anything that has been left out.I realize it can be difficult cleaning up after the other family members as well. But if you can keep up on a daily basis it's much easier. My morning is a lot smoother if I walk out the door with a clutter free home.

A vignette is a short impressionistic scene that focuses on one moment. The word was first used to describe theater moments. Fall Decorating time!

Fall is always my favorite time of year. Beautiful warm sun shiny days, cool mornings, leaves changing, colors changing around us. That reminds me it's time to start changing up our homes to match that wonderful fall feeling. The front porch or walk way is a great place to start.

Wouldn't your neighbors love to look over at a great welcome sign like this...

a nice lighted path for fall visitors is a great idea...

And inside changing your pillows, throws, or the mantle and staircases is always a wonderful place to show off the some great fall decor. Just putting out a few pumpkins and leaves can change the whole feeling of your home.

There are so many cute ideas and ways to dress up your interiors to make it feel warm and comforting like the fall brings.

Even simple ideas like wheat tied on the stairway or corn husks on your dining room hutch doors can realy bring in that fall feeling.

A gorgeous fall floral in your entryway is an awesome display of fall.

Saturdays with Sisters!

My younger Sister, Susan and I have been walking lots this summer. (I am so blessed to have her to walk with :)) We have discovered a new area to walk in this year, and it is beautiful! As the summer turns to fall we are so amazed by the new beautiful color that has emerged from all the rain. It is breath taking!

Here is our little slice of heaven...

Yellow is such an uplifting color. Doesn't it just make you smile... thats why the smiley face is always YELLOW.

My new favorite saying is "After the Rain, the Son always Shines"!

As I grow older I seem to really stop and smell the flowers alot more.

But this year we have been blessed with an extra dose of God's beauty.

I told Sue...it's amazing that we stay home and dig in the dirt and water and fertilize...and God says... Here I'll show you how it's done.

I had the opportunity to visit my daughter in Los Angeles in the spring, and be sides some awesome mother daughter time, we spent some wonderful time walking along the oceanfront area streets. Along the way we visited some great shops as well.

Candy Bar Angel Party Favor

While searching the web for a Christmas party favor I came across some adorable ideas but I decided on this Angel Candy Bar from Laurie Furnell's Blog. She has some adorable Candy Bar Wrapper patterns for free.

Basically you just fold it in thirds around a average size Hershey bar and with a glue stick, dab it closed.

I didn't have a crimper to crimp the wings so I just left them flat. I think it is just as cute.

She suggested using some gold thread for the hair but I decided to use my own creativity to embellish it.

I used a gold glittered pipe cleaner for the halo and a piece of raffia/ribbon to tie it, & also added a red jewel sticker just for a little bling.

With some quilt batting to stuff a basket, I stood them all up, so they would be easy for guests to take as they left. With the color copies, candy bars and embellishments the cost was a bargain at just over $1.00 a piece.

Not Great Before and Afters!

I have been working on a kitchen design project that I am going to share with you. I started the job helping the clients pick out a new sink and stainless appliances, thinking that's all I was going to be doing. UNFORTUNATELY :( I did not take very many "before" pictures. So you'll have to rely on my explanations. I had done their kitchen some 13 years ago and now they were ready for an update.
We purchased new stainless appliances and a sink to begin... changed the brass cabinet knobes to stainless and instant update.

Here was their wallpaper & chair rail on the main kitchen wall... BEFORE

I added beadboard wainscotting to the bottom of the wall & painted the wall two tones of a sage green, painted the chair rail cream to match the ceiling,

added a beautiful border and... WOW

AFTER

I also added a darling new mini chandelier with lamp shades and some decorative plates to the back wall.

To the side wall we replaced her shelf with a fresh coat of cream paint and added some of her favorite
antique kitchen pieces. I also added a black tin with white flowers and a bunch of dried florals tied with a bow...all to mimic what was going on in the border. this green color was such a great choice as it adds a freshness and a very new updated feeling to their tired kitchen.

To the front window wall we added a beautiful valance in shades of blue, green, and white.

You will also notice the new granite countertops, faucet, & stainless sink in this photo.

(The setting on my camera did not do a good job of capturing the colors here,

but I think you can get the idea).

I would have loved to show you the rest of the job, but just didn't get the photos to do it.

All the years I have been doing design I have not bothered to take before and after pictures...well in this job.

I learned a big lesson ...plan to take Great Before and After photos!

My Very Own Pumpkin Patch!

In the early part of August I noticed that those pumpkin seeds that I had planted in July were actually producing A pumpkin. I was so excited that I might have a pumpkin for the Fall. Well as time has gone by that one pumpkin has turned into My Very Own Pumpkin Patch. Who Hoo! As you may have seen from my earlier summer posts I am by no means a gardener. Well What do you know... the Good Lord sent Rain and Gorgeous Weather and gave me a pumkin patch of 8-10 pumpkins growning in my garden.

Here are a few of them...

What to do with all that Plastic?

I have been trying to take my own grocery bags to the grocery store these days. I must admit I often forget and have to use the plastic bags offered by the store. And thats not all that bad either as I do recycle them for other uses in my home. However I didn't really have a place for them and I ended up stuffing them under my sink. When I would open the cabinet door they would fall out. Well I am happy to say I found a nice solution, neat and orderly, the way I like it my under sink area .

the bags are folded much the same way you fold a flag.

Lay the bag flat and the fold each side in.... and then in a third time...

Then fold diagonally like you would a flag...back and forth...

then tuck the last little flap in...

they come out so nice and neat. I just threw them in a little plastic container and was amased at how little space they took.

Love, love, LOVE organization! It makes me happy!

Special Ocassion Booklet!

I have a stack of cards that I have received from people over the years from special occasions. The messages that people have written to me are so special that I want to keep the cards. I have been looking for an idea of what I could do with them rather than just let them collect dust in a drawer or throw them out. After looking at some of the scrapbooking books, this gave me a great idea.....making a special occasion booklet.

I stacked some of my cards according to size.

And then hole punched them like a book.

And I found these cute little clip rings to use to bind the cards into a book.

Slowly adding the cards to the three rings to create a book.

You can still turn to each of the cards and open them to read them.
Love it.

it could use a little embellishment, just for fun.

So cute you could even set it on a table for display. So cute!

I think the mantle would be a nice display too.

Now I can view the cards in the little special occasion booklet, & whenever I am blessed enough to receive a new special card I'll add to my book. Fun Fun!

Keep Calm!

There has been a fun new craise online with the phrase "Keep Calm and Carry On!

This poster originated by the British Government in 1939 just before the start of World War II to calm the fears of the public in the case of an invasion. The posters were distributed all over the country of England. There are only two original copies left to day. But in the yr 2000 the phrase resurfaced and has become a
catch phrase in the U.S., Keep Calm and.... add your own ending.

And even a cute rug at the front door to remind you to Keep Calm. There also are varaitions of the same idea changing the wording altogether..
