It's the latest buzz on social platforms like Tik Tok, but the concept of 'Skin Flooding' isn't actually new. It's a practice that hails from Korea, and it is the process of layering multiple mists, toners, serums and moisturizers to FLOOD the skin with serious hydration at night before you go to bed.

It's the basis of the glass-skin technique that Korea is so well known for- essentially by flooding the skin with hydration, and plumping up the cells, the texture becomes less noticeable. So those fine lines and wrinkles may not be just from repeated muscle contractions over the years, but could actually be from loss of moisture! 

To flood our skin at night, we first need to start with clean skin- then we begin layering on our hydrators from the thinnest consistency to the thickest. And remember that you can use several layers of the same product in each step, ie; patting on your clear toner 2-3 times before moving on to the milky toner step.

Layer 1- Facial Mist

This layer gets us started by prepping the skin to receive more moisture later. Hydrated skin will accept more hydration… it’s a cycle.

Our clear layer can consist of ingredients like rice water, hyaluronic acid, peptides and/or niacinamide. This layer can be applied 2-3 times as clear water like serums tend to soak in quite quickly.

Layer 3- Milky Toner

This layer begins to be a thicker consistency because of added ingredients like humectants and emollients. These more viscous ingredients like ceramides and oils pull in moisture from the surrounding air and use them as plumping agents in the skin.

Layer 4- Cream Moisturizer

Whenever I hear about a new technique to help women personalize their own makeup, I get excited! Understanding the nuances of selecting the right colors for yourself can be tricky, but with more knowledge you'll be better able to choose, so today we are talking about understanding your face's contrast level.

Contrast level is the amount of contrast (how light/dark something is when placed next to one another) found in your features. Specifically the contrast between your skin level, hair/ brow color, and the pigment in your lips. Think about how a photo that’s black and white, is actually many variations of grey. The bigger the jump from the lightest grey to the darkest grey the more contrast you have.

There are three basic levels of contrast: Low, medium and high. And knowing yours will help you decide the shades and saturation you should be using for your makeup...

Low Contrast people don't have a major difference in color between their features, they kind of all live in the same level of saturation without a major difference between their skin and hair, as well as a very subtle difference from their skin to their lip shade. These people are the best candidates for minimal 'no-makeup' makeup without looking too washed out.

Medium Contrast live more in the middle where there is a noticeable jump in color from the skin to the hair especially, it’s not drastic, but it’s not subtle like our low-contrast friends. They can play with brighter clearer tones, but usually look best if they choose either the lips or the eyes to punch up color, but not both.

High Contrast people have the largest jump between their skin tone and their hair, brows and lips. Their faces can handle full saturation and bold color better than any other category without it feeling foreign. High Contrast doesn’t have to mean only Bright color, but also more saturation and opaqueness.

If you want to try the Tik Tok filter that uses AI to help you determine your contrast level, search ‘Contrast Filter’ in the search bar. If you don’t have Tik Tok, take a selfie with no makeup on in front of a window for the best lighting, then use your camera filter editor to change the image to black and white. This will give you a good reference point to experiment from.

Summer tends to take a toll on our hair with the added sunlight, heat and chlorine especially, so Fall is a great time for a fresh cut and a new start before the Holidays. Here are three fresh Fall haircuts that I am obsessing over… We’ve been seeing these beautiful cuts bouncing around our socials and celebrities in recent weeks, and the buzz behind them has the salon world excited.

Blown Out BOB cut; Major volume and rounded layers with a blunt perimeter. No A-line, just parallel to the floor. Definitely requires more styling with hot rollers, a hot brush or Velcro rollers.

Curly Fringe cut: Never in my career have I seen curl be embraced so widely- and the added curly bangs trend is so fun for those ladies blessed with curls.

Length + 1: Over the last 5-6 years major layering in our cuts has reigned supreme, but we are starting to pull things back to more simple cuts as of late. This style has a more blunt perimeter cut with no layering that all hits at the same length + 1 soft face framing layer up front.

Thanks to the popularity of two reality shows based in Utah, the term ‘Utah Curls’ has gained its’ own headlines in the news. Articles both locally, nationally, and even aboard have popped up- noting that the women of Utah have their own signature take on curls.

So what makes Utah Curls different? It’s actually the lack of curl at both the root and the ends of the hair, with the only real curl through the mid lengths of the hair. This style is especially prevalent in longer hair and extension wearers, but it can be adapted to all lengths as well.

While I do think we will see this trend fade in the future, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere right now, so if you wanna give it a try I have two irons I recommend.
