We began the project in February of 2007 at our facilities in South Florida.

Summerwind is a 102 foot-long schooner (89 feet on deck) built in 1929 as Queen Tyi for owner Arthur Crisp.

Originally designed to cruise, she is now being outfitted to race.

To check out our progress, take a look at our photo gallery: Summerwind Photos

Want to follow along in our adventures of refurbish and rebuilding boats? Colson Boat Works.

Moores Marine understands antique and classic wooden boats inside and out, from a boat builder’s perspective. We have completed more than 100 major projects since 1986 on some of the finest American yachts ever built.

Jim learned his craft the old fashioned way, by working his way up from apprentice at some of the most revered ship yards in Maine.

Jim’s love of wood came from his father James Phelps Moores, a lumber broker in Indianapolis. As a boy, Jim would hit the train yards with his father to count the railcars of lumber that his father brought to the Midwest from all over the country.

At age 6, he fell in love with his first wooden boat, the family’s Lymon lap strake ski boat. Jim would hide inside the boat and study the varnished insides. “It just looked so hard to make and I wanted to be able to do it some day,” Jim said.

His late mother, Jacqueline, used to say Jim always wanted to know how things were made. He even took apart her kitchen stove then put it back together again.

It didn’t surprise her when Jim decided to sail off to Maine at age 19 to study wooden boat construction.

For years, Jim split his time between his boat shop in Lubec, Maine and South Florida before deciding even Maine summers were too cold and permanently moved to Florida.

In 2007, Moores Marine opened up a second location, the 18-acre Moores Marine Yacht Center in Beaufort, North Carolina off the Intracoastal Waterway.

At either location, South Florida or North Carolina, you’ll be dealing with a member of our family. Jim, his wife Stephanie and brother-in-law Nathaniel Smith. And our crew, Jon, Mike and Don might as well be family because they’ve been with us for years.

Whether you want a major refit or just touch-up and maintenance, come and see us.

We’ll keep the coffee on for you.
