A search is underway for a missing North Bay man. Police say 19 year old Jarred Legace is in a wheelchair and might be in need of medical assistance. He is described as 5 foot 6, 110 pounds, with short hair and scruffy facial hair. Anyone who has information is asked to call 705-472-1234.

Man Has Run In With Mother Bear

A warning from North Bay Police after a man had a run in with a mother bear. Police say the man was standing near the front door of his home on Tupper Drive around 8:15 Friday night when he was approached by a bear. He tried to scare away the animal but she kept approaching until she was right up to him. Police say the man hit the bear in the nose area and it finally ran off with its cubs. The police are cautioning the public as people use that area for recreational activities. Tupper Drive is located near the North Bay Golf Course off Airport Road.

Powassan The Latest To Ban Fires

Powassan is just the latest community to issue a total fire ban. No open fires, no fireworks, and no fire permits will be issued. The warm, dry conditions mean the fire ban continues for the area. The Ministry of Natural Resources has declared Northeastern Ontario a restricted fire zone because the fire hazard is rated high to extreme. Most local communities are still under bans on open burning. The list includes North Bay, Callander, West Nipissing, East Ferris, Chisholm, the Township of Nipissing, Bonfield, Mattawa, Laurier Township, Strong Township and Restoule. This also includes a ban on all those who are current permit holders. South River and Machar are not issuing burn permits. And yes, fireworks are considered an open flame in North Bay and are included in the ban. The restrictions remains in effect until further notice.

Highway 63 Has Reopened After Formaldehyde Spill

Highway 63 has now reopened, three days after a fatal tanker crash spilled formaldehyde into Trout Lake. As well, the Health Unit has lifted the drinking water restrictions for those using private water systems around the lake. The Health Unit says formaldehyde biodegrades in water in 48-72 hours, and now we're past that period. Residents can resume all water usage except those on Silver Lady Lane. According to the Nugget, more evacuees of Silver Lady Lane have returned home, but a few homes closest to the crash site are still off limits. The crash on Monday morning killed the driver of the rig from Quebec.

Callander Taxes Increasing

Home owners in Callander will be paying more in taxes. Council passed an increase that will work out to be about $93 a year for the average home owner. Callander's council finalized its 2012 budget with operating and capital expenditures adding up to $5.6 million.

Forest Fires Force State of Emergency in Timmins

Winds are pushing smoke into Gogama, Timmins and the surrounding areas Friday morning from a raging forest fire. The City of Timmins is now in a State of Emergency. Meanwhile areas near Kirkland Lake continue to be evacuated, and there's still a possibility the town may have to be evacuated. Roads in those areas have been closed, and OPP are asking people not to call 911 or OPP detachments for road updates. The public can call the Ministry of Transportation toll free at 1-800-268-4686.

Justin Trudeau Coming To North Bay

Liberal MP Justin Trudeau will be in North Bay next Thursday, May 31^st. Trudeau will be meeting with Liberal members from across the Nipissing-Timiskaming and Nickel Belt ridings. Ministry of Transportation Offers Road Closure Update For Fire Ravaged Areas

OPP are asking people not to call 911 or OPP detachments for road updates. With the forest fire situation in Northeastern Ontario, some roads have been closed or have restricted access. The public can call the Ministry of Transportation toll free at 1-800-268-4686. The South Porcupine Detachment reports a surge of travel related information phone calls. Non-emergency public inquiries for travel information can tie up needed emergency lines and personnel. Police are also advised people to stay away from the restricted areas.

A Couple of Community Project Approved By Council

A new maintenance building is going up at Lee Park in North Bay. The cost is $923,000. Council is also spending about $125,000 to replace the boardwalk at the waterfront. The work on the boardwalk should wrap up by the end of June. If it's not finished, the project will be suspended and resume in the fall so it doesn't interfere with the tourist season.

Rec Use Allowed Again on Trout Lake, Water Still Not Safe to Drink

The Health Unit has lifted the ban on recreational use of Trout Lake after Monday’s formaldehyde spill, but it still says don’t consume the water. The Health Unit says the city’s water supply is still alright. Some residents were able to return to their homes on Silver Lady Lane Wednesday night. They had been evacuated Monday after a tractor trailer crashed and spilled the chemical. Highway 63 remains closed.
