Work is almost complete on the new medical centre in Wilberforce. The pharmacy, located in the same building, opened in November to a grateful community. The finishing touches will be complete and medical equipment will be installed by next week. Highlands East Council agreed to spend $10,000 to help pave the parking lot and provide some landscaping and fencing. The owner of the property, pharmacist Kass Eshkour, wants the community to be proud of the modern, up-to-date facility and hopes to have a grand opening next month.

Haliburton County - Discretionary Benefits Capped

The County of Haliburton has a tough decision ahead. In the recent budget, the province reduced the funding for social assistance programs...effective July 1st. This means that the county will either have to spend money not in the budget to keep things the way they are, or cut back services. These services provide a basic level of health care and the necessities for low income residents. One of the hardest hit in the county could be the year-old Volunteer Dental Outreach program. Council agreed to fund the difference until October 1st and review the benefits currently provided.

Preliminary Hearing Begins for Minden Homicide

The preliminary hearing is set to begin Monday for the 4 accused in the murder of Ryan Kennedy, and the attempted murder of an unidentified man, both of Minden. Nathanial Cain, Tin Wai Hong, Raphael Guerra and Mason Gillard-Gatza will appear before a judge at the courthouse in Oshawa to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial. All four Toronto men were arrested last fall, soon after the deadly assault took place in the South Lake area of Minden.

ROLLOVER NETS IMPAIRED DRIVER

A vehicle rollover at the intersection of Scotch Line and Bobcaygeon Road on Saturday afternoon, resulted in the driver being charged with impaired driving. OPP officers say a white SUV appeared to have rolled over onto a residential lawn, and after speaking to the driver, a 27 year old Minden man, they determined that he had been consuming alcohol. . The accused is to appear in Minden Court in July.

Haliburton County Shoreline Tree Preservation By-law

A beautiful Saturday afternoon couldn't keep waterfront owners from attending a County of Haliburton open house. Over 30 people were there to voice their concerns and offer support to the draft Shoreline Tree Preservation By-Law. The goal is to reduce the destruction of trees, protect water resources and maintain a healthy natural environment. A copy of the By-Law is available on the County website and comments are welcome until the end of June.

Algonquin Highlands - Public Dock Mooring Enforcement)

Public docks in Algonquin Highlands will have stricter controls in place this summer. Little Hawk and Kawagama(cow-a-gamma) Lakes have been having problems for years - with boats parked at the public docks for days and weeks at a time. A new bylaw is being considered to issue tickets and tow away any boats left overnight. New signs will be put up and Dock Masters will be appointed to help educate boat owners and enforce the existing laws.

Police Implement Road Safety Strategy 2015

OPP detachments across the province are making preparations to support the annual Canada Road Safety Week campaign – Road Safety Strategy 2015, the goal of which is to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world. Canada Road Safety Week focuses on increasing public compliance with safe driving through enforcement action. The goal is to save lives and reduce injuries on Canada’s highways by targeting the major causes of road deaths and injuries, specifically, aggressive driving, impaired driving, distracted driving and failing to be properly restrained. The campaign began on May 14 and will be carried out over the Victoria Day long weekend before coming to an end on May 21st.

“Since 1996, the OPP along with police agencies across the country have collaborated to raise awareness regarding issues of public safety on our roads,” stated Chief Superintendent Don Bell, Commander of the OPP Highway Safety Division. “The OPP will use this campaign to supplement our Provincial Traffic Safety Program and demonstrate our commitment to public safety and community wellness

OPP Prepared for the Long Weekend

The OPP will use all available resources this Victoria Day weekend to ensure that Ontario’s highways, trails and waterways remain among the safest in the world. This weekend traditionally kicks off the summer driving season and the OPP expects to see a significant increase in traffic. The OPP is reminding the public that they will not tolerate any unsafe driving habits and that the OPP plane will be taking to the skies to assist with patrols while keeping an eye from the sky looking for aggressive and speeding drivers. While patrols are stepped up, drivers should know that OPP officers will be diligent about targeting aggressive driving, impaired driving, seatbelt compliance and distracted driving. Drivers who do not slow down and move over when passing an emergency vehicle (ambulance/fire/police) on the shoulder of the road endanger emergency responders and where possible, will be stopped and charged.

This weekend also marks the beginning of Safe Boating Awareness Week and the OPP Marine Unit will have a presence on the waterways to help prevent drowning and other incidents on Ontario waterways this weekend. Remember to wear a certified flotation device and don’t drink and boat.

Man Drowns in Soyers lake

The Haliburton Highlands OPP are investigating an incident in which a 20 year old Haliburton man was pulled from Soyer’s Lake. Emergency crews responded to a call on Monday afternoon to the Poverty Bay area of Soyer’s Lake, where the male was pulled from the water. He was transported to Minden Hospital and later air lifted to Peterborough, where he was pronounced dead he has been identified as Kieran Wulff, 20 years old of Haliburton. Foul play is not suspected. This investigation is continuing.

OPP ADDRESS CONCERNS ABOUT NUISANCE BEARS

With the recent changes at the Ministry of Natural Resources’ Bear Wise program, the Haliburton Highlands OPP have been receiving questions regarding matters of nuisance bears. Police say incidents involving bear/human conflict are primarily the responsibility of the MNR. The MNR continues to operate at toll free Bear Reporting Hotline, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The OPP will respond to emergency calls about any wild animal, if there is an immediate threat to public safety, in support of the MNR response.
