The concerns of northeastern Ontario around the divestiture of the ONTC has now moved to Sault Ste. Marie. Next week there will be a screening of “Derailed: The National Dream” a documentary produced by film maker Dan Nystedt. The movie examines the crumbling state of the Canadian railway system. The screening will take place on the train as it leaves Cochrane on its way to North Bay. Area residents are invited to join the train on May 30th. A rally will then take place in North Bay. More details to come.

Residents of the Mattagami First Nation have already been evacuated to Kapuskasing. Shifting winds have pushed the fire to within 30 kilometers of Timmins. The other fire near Kirkland Lake appears to be almost out. Residents in the town are still on high alert because of dangerous hot spots.

Tembec is holding the celebration today in memory of Dan Simis and Chad McQuade who were killed in a helicopter crash November 2nd. Both Dan and Chad were passionate about ensuring the forest continues for future generations. Today’s achievement wouldn’t be possible without their dedication. It’s expected that many from Tembec, the town and family will be in attendance this afternoon.
