Jumpstart/Kidsport Day

Tomorrow Canadian Tire in Kapuskasing is holding their fundraiser for Jumpstart/Kidsport Kapuskasing. The Canadian Tire parking lot will be a busy place from 10:30am to3:30pm for the fundraiser. There will be basketball, bean bag toss, and lots of kiddie games. Try out the baseball cage and see how fast you can hit a ball or a puck. There will be face-painting, music for entertainment and hot dogs and drinks will be available. As well as the activities there will be a draw for a bike valued at $500. Tickets will be available until Sunday afternoon. The draw will be held on Monday with all proceeds going to the local Jumpstart/Kidsport chapter. Activities will also be taking place at the Hearst Canadian Tire tomorrow.

Reitman's Kapuskasing to Close this Fall

In another blow to the local economy, Reitman’s is set to close later this year, leaving the staff out of work and women in the area without another clothing store. The building that the store is located in is being leased to another company with plans to move in at the beginning of November. Reitman’s has no plans to relocate the store into another location in town. The Wearhouse One Store next to Reitman’s will be relocating into the town in November. A petition has been launched by a concerned resident to get Reitman’s to move the store and not close it. The petition is at the store and other locations around town.

Forest Fire Updates

The City of Timmins has declared a state of emergency as the raging forest fire in the area creeps closer to the city. Residents of the Mattagami First Nation have already been evacuated to Kapuskasing. Shifting winds have pushed the fire to within 30 kilometers of Timmins. The other fire near Kirkland Lake appears to be almost out. Residents in the town are still on high alert because of dangerous hot spots.

300 Millionth Tree Planted

A special ceremony marking the planting of the 300 millionth seedling in the Gordon Cosens Forest was held in the bush yesterday. Tembec held the celebration in memory of Dan Simis and Chad McQuade who were killed in a helicopter crash November 2^nd. Both Dan and Chad were passionate about ensuring the forest continues for future generations. The achievement wouldn’t be possible without their dedication. Tembec CEO Jim Lopez says it was great to be here. More than 100 people gathered at the planting site north of Kapuskasing.

Onions Recall

There’s been a recall issued for Gills brand Fresh Diced Red Onions and Compliments brand salads. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says there could be a possible Listeria contamination. The onions were sold 198-gram packages with at May 17^th 2012 best before date. There have been no reports of illnesses so far.

Keep the 10 Northern Ridings Campaign

Northern MPs will join others today in making an announcement calling on the conservatives for support. MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, Carol Hughes will join Timmins James Bay MP Charlie Angus and Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle to give an update on the “Keep the 10 Ridings” campaign. It’s to guarantee full representation for Northern Ontario after the electoral boundaries are re-drawn. Over 50 communities in the North are behind the initiative.

Grocery Store Closing in Moonbeam

The grocery store in Moonbeam will be closing its doors leaving the community without one. To help residents keep a grocery store in the municipality there’s a meeting being held in June to help organize a cooperative. It’s hoped that this meeting will transform the locally owned grocery store into a cooperative. Christian Howald will be the special guest speaker at the evening event at the community centre the evening of June 6^th at 7:00pm. This meeting is open to all Moonbeam residents.

Restricted Fire Zone-No Open Fires

Most of Northeastern Ontario is in a restricted fire zone. As of noon yesterday the MNR made the announcement which will continue through as long as necessary. The area bush is extremely dry and volatile. Because of the extreme fire hazard no outdoor fires are permitted.

Ontario Northland Next Steps

The next step in the campaign to stop the sale of Ontario Northland is asking citizens to be part of the process. The New Deal for Ontario Northland initiative is publishing inserts in 11 of Sun Media's newspapers across Northern Ontario. Northerners are asked to take the insert with the New Deal logo and display it at home, at work and in vehicles. An ad also contains information and a coupon that readers are encouraged to fill out and return to your local paper. North Bay Mayor Al McDonald says Premier Dalton McGuinty continues to ignore requests to meet with Northern mayors, so maybe he'll listen to the taxpayers he represents. Last week the New Deal of Ontario Northland campaign started with the launch of the website nd4on.ca, and communities affected by the sale lowered their provincial flags to half-mast.
